Ted Nugent, please phone home.......2007-06-25
The CD track set kicks off with "The Theme From Route 66" performed by Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra. The sound is cool, savvy and the melody goes along at just the right pace. The strings and percussion enhance this classic number, too. Great! The next track has The John Buzon Trio performing "Caravan" using the organ as they so often did to embellish the beauty of the number. The percussion hits it all just right and "Caravan" boasts a romantic and relentlessly upbeat melody.
"Cool" by Lou Busch & His Orchestra gives us an awesome rendition of this song from West Side Story; and "The Beast" by Milt Buckner oozes class and a certain type of panache you rarely hear these days. Like John Buzon and his buddies; the arrangement for "The Beast" makes good use of the organ. The piano shines on this number, too.
Alvino Rey's rendition of "Night Train" slinks along with a steamy, naturally romantic style that will prove beyond doubt that this music still retains its high quality control to this very day. Martin Denny was doing a lot of exotica by the late 1950s, but his version of "Harlem Nocturne" is sublime! The chimes work well; and the piano together with the bass make this number an instant classic. Hooray!
Sam Butera and his buddies perform a medley of "The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams/Fever" that leaves you sweating from its hot, hot, hot delivery; and "Street Scene '58" makes great use of the sax to romanticize this tune.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The last two tracks on this CD are Julie London's "Black Coffee" and "Melancholy Serenade" by King Curtis. Julie sings "Black Coffee" without a single superfluous note; but you should know that although "Melancholy Serenade" gets the royal treatment from King Curtis, this is not the interpretation of this song that I have heard before. Instead of the dramatic and somewhat boisterous use of the horns; King Curtis's rendition places the organ squarely into the spotlight of the arrangement and the single horn tones down this angle drastically. Nevertheless, the arrangement works well.
The liner notes include an informative essay by R. J. Smith; and the song credits and recording dates are there for you, too. The artwork reflects good taste and there are even two drink recipes!
I highly recommend this CD for fans of "lounge music" and for people who want to remember a time when cool music for lovers actually was cool music for lovers.
Enjoy!

Album Description
This latest Tone Center release is a collaboration by the longtime fusion guitar team of Brett Garsed and T.J. Helmerich. The players combine for a fusion super session with Tribal Tech's Gary Willis and Scott Kinsey and legendary drummer, Dennis Chambers.Guitarist and studio engineer Helmerich had this to say about the recording: "The idea behind this CD was to get the energy out of the players while tracking. We knew what was possible this time around and wanted to make an exciting "up tempo" free for all! We knew that no mater how raw we made the tunes as it started...each guy would not only respond to the energy, but bring an element of class and musicality to the table that makes "Uncle Moes" the band that it is."

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

10 Stars (The Best Hip-Hop Album I Own).......2007-01-21
I love the follow up, "Blowout Comb" (the album that actually turned me on to DP; I heard Blowout Comb first) but I would have to say that "Reachin" is slightly better. The two albums are different to me. "Reachin" is just "feel good", jazzy hip hop, and "Blowout Comb" is "chill", jazzy hip hop. I prefer "Reachin" cause, even though I'm a laid back cat, I rather "feel good" than to "chill". "Reachin" is #1 for me as far as hip hop goes, and "Blowout Comb" is 1A.
1) It's Good To Be Here--9.5/10- What a way to get things jumpin off
2) Pacifics--9.5/10- This track is "red hot"
3) Where I'm From--10/10- My favorite joint on the album. It just feels so good.
4) What Cool Breezes Do--10/10- So chill, i love the instruments
5) Time and Space--8/10- didnt feel it initially, now i love it!
6) Rebirth of Slick--10/10- this joint is just classic like that
7) Last of the Spiddyocks--9/10
8) Jimmi Diggin Cats--8.5/10
9) La Femme Fetal--9/10-This isnt a song, it's just like a poem to a cool beat. Butterfly gets deep on this one.
10) Escapism--10/10- i love it. so funky, yet so chill
11) Appointment at the Fat Clinic--7/10
12) Nickel Bags--10/10- you'll be high off DP after this joint
13) Swoon Units--10/10- "Run and tell yo mama bout this"
14) Examination of What--9/10

Despite what some other reviewers are telling you, there is NOTHING wrong with this album. It's flawless from top to bottom. Actually, now that I think about it, forget about standout tracks, the whole album is tight.
Reachin' is one of those albums that are so great that they're practically impossible to duplicate. The vibe captured on this album still holds up great 13 years after it's release. This is a hip hop must have. If you dig the marriage of hip hop and jazz, then do yourself a favor and grab this album. You should also check out their 2nd LP (Blowout Comb). Though it sounds nothing like this album, it's just as tight. They would disband after their sophomore release, but they certainly made magic while they were together. I recommend making this a collection piece.

The club is cookin'; the band is hot and you just walked in--CRAZY !!!.......2007-07-12
The CD track set begins with Dean Martin's classic interpretation of "Ain't That A Kick In The Head." The Nelson Riddle arrangement relies on the horns and the piano is awesome! Dean's voice is in perfect form--energetic and full of masculine warmth as he sings of his new love. A previously unreleased track of "Dig That Crazy Chick" by Sam Butera & The Witnesses follows; Sam & The Witnesses swing hard. Sam's voice is clear and full of excitement as he describes his new girlfriend. The musicians never miss a beat, either!
Bobby Darin performs "More" with sensitivity and panache; I love that piano arrangement by Richard Wess! Peggy Lee's classic rendition of "Fever" absolutely oozes the feminine desire for a man; the people snapping their fingers along with the beat really add to the number! Peggy's voice is rich and vibrant for "Fever." Excellent!
"Danke Schöen" by Wayne Newton will surpass your expectations if you've never heard this ballad before; Wayne sings this with all his heart. Wayne's interpretation of "Danke Schoen" makes his rendition THE definitive interpretation of "Danke Schöen." Jimmie Haskell's orchestra performs beautifully with a firm emphasis on the horns, percussion and strings.
If you want a more playful number, however, check out "French Poodle" by Sam Butera & The Witnesses. Sam sings this to perfection and the horns sound great on "French Poodle!" "Closer To The Bone" by Louis Prima continues in this vein; I believe that you will enjoy "Closer To The Bone" by Louis Prima.
The CD provides us with still more traditional love ballads. Nat King Cole performs "L-O-V-E" without a superfluous note; love that horn solo in the middle of this number! Moreover, Dean Martin croons "Volare (Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu)" with a great musical arrangement; I really like how Dean Martin sings this number in both English and Italian. Great effect!
Julie London delivers "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" with all the style of a consummate performer; and the CD track set ends well with Bobby Darin crooning a great "Hello, Dolly!" Darin sings "Hello, Dolly!" with great care and sensitivity. "Hello, Dolly" provides a strong ending to the CD track set.
The liner notes include great artwork; and R. J. Smith contributes an essay about lounge singers and the nightlife of the late 1950s and early 1960s especially on the Vegas strip. The song credits and recording dates are there for you; and there are even two drink recipes! Bob Norberg at Capitol Recording Studios did a great job of remastering these tunes.
The very special, golden age of The Vegas Strip with its superstars of the 1950s and 1960s may be behind us but this album does a great job of recreating those special times. I highly recommend this CD for fans of lounge music; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will cherish this CD for years to come.
Enjoy!

At the time of this album, Jamiroquai's second, Britain's soul-funk-acid jazz scene had been firmly established by numerous club DJs and bands like Soul II Soul, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, and Young Disciples. Jamiroquai formed their own voice with strong songwriting, tight ensemble playing, and--most of all--Jay Kay's fluid vocals, which are impressively reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's. As the band's main songwriter, Kay addresses social ills ("Just Another Story," "Manifest Destiny"), advocates enlightenment ("Stillness in Time," "Light Years"), and leads his multiculti band through love songs both bubble-gum funky ("Mr. Moon") and jazzy sweet ("Half the Man"). Unabashedly mixing disco into their funky soul, Jamiroquai even make cheesy synths sound good. --Suzanne McElfreshCustomer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-05-23
4real I love this album soo much - it's ma favourite in the world, and it's absolutely timeless - u can never get bored of this, u'll always take it out now and again and go omg i cant believ hw good tht is lol. The best song on it is definitly Space Cowboy (an i got mad wen they neva put it on the film 'the return of the space cowboys lol). However, the beginning of 'Scam' is truly magical. The worst licks off this album are 'The Kids' and maybe 'Journey To Arnhemland, which is an instrumental. At 1st I h8ed 'Half the man', but then I loved it cos i find it easy ta sing to lol. 'Manifest Destiny' is amazing too, and I can really relate to it. 'Just another Story' is FANTASTIC!!! I'm a real Jamiroquai fan and out of all their albums this is the best (EOPearth comes 2nd!)!!
If u havent already got it - i strongly reccomend u buy it - u wont regret it it's amazing - even beats ma fav redhotchilipeppers album (BSSM - 4 those fellow fans ;) )
THE RETURN OF THE SPACE COWBOY IS AMAZING!
Unique.......2006-03-04
Long story short, this is a unique album made with a perfect taste and impressive technical performance. The album's only drawback is weak production, but still the music is the best they've ever done. If you think that Jamiroquai are just a disco-funk band, try this and you'll find out they are (or were) much more interesting and innovative.

Jamiroquai Won Me Over With This Album!!.......2005-11-18
It's a shame it was virtually slept upon here in the states!
But back in 1994, while over in the U.K., I went to see
the Brand New Heavies featuring N'dea Davenport
(another fave of mine from that era!)and a freind
told me that if I loved them, I was sure to love this almost new group at the time..Jamiroquai.
Well, we went to catch them in concert as well and WOW!
I was hooked by their sound, style and Jay-Kay's vocalizations.
Now I don't agree or understand about the comparisons that
some make between Jay and Stevie Wonder, because they
sound nothing alike, but I guess because the Jamiroquai
sound was so retro with the heavy fender rhodes, clavinet,
arp, moog & oberheim synths, etc. (circa 1970's)
that some had to make the comparison
to categorize what they were hearing!---
This album is the first Jamiroquai album that
I bought and it's great from start to finish!
"Space Cowboy", "Stillness In Time", "Half The Man",
"Manifest Destiny" "Journey To Arnhemland" & "Morning Glory"
all still stand the test of time!
Stuart Zender is an absolutely incredible bassist!
It's like the late Bernard Edwards of CHIC, Verdine White of E,W&F
and Larry Graham of Sly & The Family Stone / Graham Central Station
morphed and merged into the body of a young white kid!
Then, I went back and bought their debut
"Emergency On Planet Earth", which I also love, and then
of course, there is "Traveling Without Moving" which gave
them their crossover hit "Virtual Insanity" and finally got
them love here in the states outside the small but
loyal ultra-hip fan base they have here!
If you buy either 3 of the aforementioned albums,
you can't go wrong!

LOVE IT!.......2007-05-13
Now THIS'LL take the chill off your chili !!!.......2007-03-16
The CD opens with Dean Martin crooning the words to "Sway" which gets the Latin treatment by Dick Stabile & His Orchestra. The mixing of traditional instruments with a Latin beat makes this number shine. "Recado Bossa Nova" by Laurindo Almeida & The Bossa Nova All-Stars follows; "Recado Bossa Nova" has a much purer Latin beat and the musical arrangement uses the guitar very effectively. Once you hear "Recado Bossa Nova" you're going to have incredible difficulty sitting still for the rest of the CD, so clear some room on the floor and prepare for what comes next!
"You're My Thrill" mixes a Latin beat with great use of the horn and drums as Jud Conlon's Rhythmaires infuse it with just a touch of a more traditional American flavor. How's about that piano, too? SMILES
The John Buzon Trio turns in an excellent performance with a solid cha-cha beat for "It Must Be True." As soon as I heard this I wanted a whole CD of John's trio but I didn't find one; and I have no clue why! They give a high octane performance on "It Must Be True" with even an organ thrown into the musical arrangement at just the right moments. This is a high point for this CD.
This CD also contains the classic track "Whatever Lola Wants;" and there is a medley of "Dark Eyes/It Happened in Monterey" by The Mallet Men and 80 Drums Around The World, respectively. Awesome! "A Nêga Se Vingou" shines also with a high energy, fast paced seductive beat and melody that reflects a relentlessly happy outlook on life; and "The Magnificent Seven" shows us how the then-current Latin cha-cha dance craze could be fitted to the score from a major American motion picture, too.
"Desafinado," the second song on this album to be performed by Laurindo Almeida & The Bossa Nova All-Stars, really makes you want to grab your partner and dance, dance, dance for joy! The flute adds a little extra something special to this instrumental track.
"So Nice (Samba De Verão)" will probably be the most easily recognized track on this CD. The organ and percussion carry the melody well; Billy May does a great job with this number.
Some reviewers write that this CD has some filler material. In my opinion, if there is any filler material it is most likely the track entitled "Rock-Cha-Rhumba." This track contains three shorter numbers to illustrate how the advent of rock and roll affected cha-cha music. You may like this; or you may not enjoy this at all. It's a judgment call!
The CD ends with Julie London singing "Sway" with her rather seductive rendition of the very same ballad sung by Dean Martin at the beginning of this CD. I think Dean's version would have sufficed for this CD; they could have added a brand new, fresh track in place of Julie London's "Sway" but the rest of the CD is so good I can forgive this.
The two bonus "hidden tracks" add some color to the CD but they are not the main attraction; some people may even consider them to be pure filler. There is one short track of a man professing his love for his woman as he simply talks about her. If there were only one track I could replace in the track set this number would be it; I would replace it with another musical ballad or an instrumental. The final track gives a brief aural lesson in how to play the bongos; give it a whirl before you dismiss the bongo drum lesson!
The liner notes give the song credits; a wonderful essay by R. J. Smith; and you even get recipes for making margaritas and cuban apricots! Cool! The sound is terrific; Bob Norberg at Capitol Records did a flawless job of digitally remastering these tracks.
The Latin cha-cha craze was just one of several Latin dance crazes sweeping the country in the late 1950s and 1960s. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys such music; and people who enjoy lounge music or Latin music from the 1950s and 1960s will treasure this CD as well.

LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE!.......2007-05-13
Music To Watch Girls By is in orbit around my earlobes..........2007-04-01
The CD starts off beautifully with Martin Denny's version of "Fandango." The percussion, horns and tambourines combine to create a terrific musical arrangement. The melody is infectiously catchy and upbeat; you'll want to jump up and dance just after this first track alone! The background chorus adds a heavenly touch to this number; you will be in the mood for love! "Mah-Ná Man-Ná" is a tune you may well recognize as being great lounge music; but even if this is new to you, you are sure to enjoy this number. Again, the drums, percussion and horns carry the bulk of the musical arrangement; Leroy Holmes did a great job with this number. Love that xylophone accent! The strings work well on "Mah-Ná Man-Ná," too.
Billy May then gives us the track entitled "Music To Watch Girls By/Slick." The sassy yet elegant musical arrangement for the horns resembles the sound of the Tijuana Brass; indeed, Herb Alpert helped to write "Slick." The saxophone works beautifully and this track boasts a certain high level of elegance that I rarely hear even in lounge music. Great!
"Guys And Dolls" gives us an example of a lounge music rendition of a classic Broadway show tune; this number has a big band flavor and the piano works wonders, too. Terry Snyder makes his rendition of "Guys And Dolls" a very special one. The horns, guitar, xylophone and drums weave a magic spell that leaves you wanting more. "No Matter What Shape (You're Stomach's In)" shares a track with the famous tune entitled "Tijuana Taxi" as both numbers are performed by the New Classic Singers. No words are sung; but the chorus does an excellent job of working their way into your heart. "Tijuana Taxi" gets the royal treatment as the New Classic Singers and the musicians infuse this with relentless happiness. They bat "Tijuana Taxi" right out of the ballpark.
Martin Denny's lounge music take on "The Donkey Serenade" features the xylophone, and the piano, even the chimes come in to make this arrangement sounding fresh even today. "Baby Elephant Walk" sports a distinct late 1950s/early 1960s beat to it that reflects good judgment; and when it blends into Bill May's rendition of "Java" I was thrilled with the upbeat, catchy melody that remains timeless to this day. Look out for "Baby Elephant Walk/Java!"
Another treat is the two numbers of never before released music by the artist Dr. Samuel Hoffman. "Deep Purple," written by Derose and Parish, gets a heavenly zither treatment; and "S'Wonderful" by the Gershwin brothers follows nicely on this same track.
Although Martin Denny's "Quiet Village (Moog Version)" doesn't quite work for me, the bonus track of "Lisbon Antigua" gets the ultimate Nelson Riddle treatment to end the album very fittingly.
The liner notes include an essay by R. J. Smith, all the song credits, and you even get drink recipes for a rum swizzle and a singapore sling! The art work is nicely done; and Bob Norberg at Capitol Records did a great job of digitally remastering the tracks for this CD.
I highly recommend this CD for lounge music fans and people who enjoy the "mood music" of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Fans of easy listening and exotica music will cherish this CD, too.

"Big Noise From Winnetka/Midnight Swim" - horn-laden big band segues into loungy film score from "Sex and The Single Girl",
"Hot Toddy" - swingin' Julie London vocals, "doo-doo-doo",
"Mah-Na, Mah-Na" - harmonica and kazoo,
"Guys and Dolls" - if Tubular Bells were lounge,
"Cute" - organ fits the title,
"Donkey Serenade" - vibraphone over a bass guitar that sounds like hoof beats,
"Baby Elephant Walk/Java" - classic 60s pop,
"Potluck" - scat singing,
"Squatty Roo" - angular "squatty" sound,
"Deep Purple/S' Wonderful" - strange theremin sounds (could have been included on Space Capades),
"Quiet Village" - a classic tiki lounge song revisited on Moog (another song that could have been on Space Capades).

Bill Douglas--composer, pianist, and bassoonist--excels at sentimental, romantic music. Deep Peace, a collection of modern classical compositions both instrumental and choral, fits in snugly with the musician's rather prolific output of slightly cloying melody. Drawing on his jazz background, love of folk music, and lyrical language, Douglas finds inspiration in the poetry of William Butler Yeats, Robert Burns, William Blake, and Alfred Graves. The Ars Nova Singers, a Boulder, Colorado, choral group, function here as on Douglas's Earth Prayer as another instrument used to relate the largesse of sound as worship, celebration, and tender feeling. Traditional, skilled, and dynamic, the Singers are well suited to the composer's majestic orchestral canvas. This baker's dozen--lively, reverent, and overall sweetly harmonious--is sandwiched between two versions of the title cut, a traditional Gaelic blessing, effectively setting the blissful tone for these Celtic-tinged pieces of the whole. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Has music ever overtaken you so that it became more than music? It was like your spirit entered its essence? Like it spoke to your soul on a level you cannot fully express with human words, yet your heart burns to share it? DEEP PEACE does that for me. I truly believe DEEP PEACE is inspired and approved by a Higher Power. I hope you will buy this and experience it for yourself. Until then, I leave you with some lyrics from the first song, my favorite, DEEP PEACE:
"Deep peace of the running wave to you / Deep Peace of the flowing air to you / Deep Peace of the quiet earth to you / Deep Peace of the shining stars to you / Deep Peace of the gentle night to you / Moon and stars pour their healing light on you / Deep Peace to you."
