This Havana-born, Miami-based singer-songwriter has already made quite a splash. Two-time Grammy nominee Albita Rodriguez is a former protégé of Emilio Estefan and numbers both Bill Clinton (she sang at his second inaugural ball) and Madonna (who has said, "In my next life, I'm coming back as Albita") among her most ardent fans. Her songs are a crafty amalgam of a Cuban country style called punto guajiro, nueva trova ballads, blistering salsa horn charts, Afro-Cuban chants, Buena Vista-style son, and American jazz. On this 2002 release, the title of which translates as "handmade," she avoids the fatuous pop hooks that nearly sideswiped her a couple of albums back and concentrates on what she does best: the music of passion. She is unconquerably female whether she is pleading, lashing out, or exulting in requited love. Accompanied by a happening quintet of fellow expats, her rough-edged, smoky voice growls, purrs, and soars. --Christina Roden

One of the best and consistently most interesting pianists since Bill Evans and Lennie Tristano. Playing in his own idiom, great extended improvisation lines, and wonderful percussion/handclaps/etc. Cannot recommend too highly.

Hand made... Soul made!.......2003-09-23

if you like jazz or you like flamenco, you will love this cd because Chano fuses both influences and the result is these great compositions he brings here. All the songs are great but I specially love track #7 because he mixes many rithyms from the flamenco in jus one song, wich is very difficult to do.

These is real flamenco, not as Chick Coreas`s "My Spanish Heart" which is great too but it is not real flamenco.

If you love music you will enjoy this cd very much!

Grrrreat Gipsi Jazz Flamenco Piano !!!.......2003-06-10

Chano Dominguez is a grrreat Pianist with many of the same influences as Michel Camilo or Chick Corea or Chucho Valdez or Eliane Elias BUT much more Flamenco-oriented... this CD is my favorite one of what he has released so far that is still available !!! very Flamenco with none of the Sax or Trumpet solos that spoil, for me, most "modern" Flamenco CDs these days- just piano, guitar, bass & lotsa percussion y palmas... if you enjoy Chick Coreas' "My Spanish Heart" CD; you'll enjoy this one !!!

probably one of the best pianist in the business. This is a flamenco album (with some spanish guitar on three tracks)... A must have. If you already know it and you're looking for something similar, get "Spain" from Camillo and Tomatito.

Bien Hecho.......2002-08-15

My theory is that if you own more than ten CDs,
then one or two of them should be by Albita.

On Hecho a Mano her unusual, entrancing voice is
as good as ever. This is a more intimate, jazzy
sound than most of her previous work. The mix of
voice and instruments allows her voice to come
through clearly.

All of the songs were written by Albita. This is
a problem. The songs are good, but not great.
Most of the songs, in one way or another, are
saying the same thing over and over again:
"I want to love you. Let me love you." This is
fine, I guess, if you can pretend that Albita is
singing to you. However, on this album she calls
her lover a "little woodland flower," which will
probably make it difficult for many men to
pretend that she is singing to them. Also, this
continual begging and pleading makes Albita
herself sound lonely and desperate.

Fifty minutes of fun. The lyrics are included in
the album notes.

Albita does not disappoint.......2002-06-16

Saw Albita at the Birchmere in VA last night. Her new songs do not disappoint. Her voice has great range and incredible power.

THIS CD IS THE BEST OF WHAT ALBITA IS ALL ABOUT. I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE HER MAKING THE MUSIC SHE LOVES. IT IS APPARENT THAT HER GIFT TO CREATE IS IN HER BLOOD.

i love this album.......2001-07-05

i love this album , specially the last track with the flamenco singer, we need chano dominguez to do more albums like this to show people flamenco can be done on piano as well as guitar, and even though chano claims there is jazz elements in there, i dont think of what they do as "jazz" i think chano and jorge pardo's styles are very original and i never thought of paco de lucia as jazz either, these people are just pioneers of flamenco, thats all and that is how i have accepted them. my e-mail is:
