Amazon.com
Paris's glitzy nightspot Buddha Bar is best known for its signature ambient environments, which are available in elaborately packaged, pricey, and popular CD compilations. This offering consists of two sections: "Buddha's Dinner," which is designed to accompany a deluxe dining experience, and "Buddha's Party," which is more groove-oriented. Although the selections are inspired by and built upon traditional music, mostly from Asia and South America, fans of club-oriented world music are advised to check out edgier electronica by Cheb I Sabbah, TransGlobal Underground, and Aisha Kandisha. But those who adore the likes of Deep Forest and Enigma will contentedly chill to these tracks. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Not so bad.............2007-07-26

I dunno...I feel this to be better than VIII, which is a good thing. While I could have done without the opening track on disc 1, the rest of this disc is easy enough to listen to. Disc 2 is the clincher, much more like the BB of old. Wonder what #10 will be like? And what's up with the packaging, just about everyone of these volumes has this problem with the disc trays coming unglued from the box, with Vol IX no different.

5 out of 5 stars Chill.......2007-07-24

Buddha Bar 9 is chilled out nicely, and does justice to the atmospheres of the actual restaurants. I rarely write reviews, but the others were too negative. I'm listening right now and I think the track selection and overall feel is amazing. I don't think the soundbites did it justice. A CD like this is a bridge to my other favorite genre: progressive trance. Several of the songs could practically be on Coldharbour.

Personally I think 6 was the 1st knockout, and 7 was an impressive evolution in sound that still kept the stereo full of rich HI-FI. 8 sucked and most of the earlier ones did too (IMO), but this CD makes me want to twist one up. Ravin is the Truth.

5 out of 5 stars Same quality as always.......2007-06-27

I always find it interesting when people pan these albums, I mean seriously even if it's not your favorite it should get a minimum of 3 stars just for the quality of the music and honestly how can you know in one day if you are going to like it over all. Good music takes time to settle in and establish itself, if you want disposable pop, you are in the wrong place. 1 star would mean a terrible album and this is not that from any angle, like it or not the musicians are all top notch. That being said, this is exactly like versions 1-8 before it, so chances are if you like them you will grow to like this. You may prefer others, but they are all very similar. This one has some hauntingly beautiful music and some thumping chill burners. It's a very good selection for the buddha bar family. Highly recommended although not at $64, you can download it for much less.

2 out of 5 stars Not any where near the 1st and 2nd.......2007-05-26

I get so excited when the new Buddha Bar CD's come out and rush to get them as fast as possible. This time and the last few hasn't been as deep and strong as the ones in the past. Still a nice collection of unique music but a bit of dissapointment for me.

1 out of 5 stars A weak link in a strong chain.......2007-05-08

The Buddha-bar series is some of the greatest music we enjoy.
I never write reviews, until now.
Sorry to say, buddha bar 9 is the most dissappointing in the series.
Go back to BB8,7,6,4,2,1. Buddha Bar Nature DVD is excellent.

Album Description

Ravin and David Visan have again served up a luscious, alchemical brew in which the purity of traditional sounds blends with pulsing electro in the holiest of unions. "Sarod", the first disc, serves up a harmonious yet assorted platter of Brazilian, Vietnamese, Hungarian, Indian, and Malian sounds. "Sarangi", the second disc, is a homage to Ustad Sultan Khan, elegantly riding a joyful electro-ethnic wave, alighting here and there to be serenaded by such artists as Mabagaya Project, Tito Rodriguez, or King Britt.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Buddha Bar Album.......2007-06-12

This is the best Buddha Bar album I own, the older they get, the slower the music seems to get. There is a great mix of nationalities represented and the songs don't get too monotonous with the electronic beats. Aja Maji, Aganju, Flute Fantasy, Perfume, Mama Guela, Uzomaka, and Drum'n Boogaloo are my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as we hoped it would be!.......2007-05-15

This is a great CD. We heard it in a restaurant and were so impressed that we wrote down the name and recently bought it. One disc is more relaxing and the other is a little more on the "party" side-both are great fun.

5 out of 5 stars Buddha Bar Specilist,.......2007-04-08

Very strong
Crossection of music for all tastes
Even breattaking at times

5 out of 5 stars Not disappointed.......2007-03-19

I already had another set of 2 CDs that I love from Buddha Bar. I had a $25 gift certificate so I looked for the set that was on sale and ordered it without listening to it. It's more "smooth" and softly moody than the other one I have - more like listening music rather than dance.

5 out of 5 stars Buddha Bar.......2007-01-19

An incredible Fusion of music from India, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. Ranges from classical and jazz to disco and latin Rythms......I have Siddartha, Buddha Bar 5,6,7 and 8.....and not heard a track that I did not like......Great ! Great ! stuff.

Taking over where Claude Challe left off, Raven is now behind the wheel and brings all the themes & vibes one would expect when experiencing Buddha Bar where the focus is on mellow rhythms & styles, mixing Spanish, Indian and Asian vibes with other ethnic styles like Indian fusion, Japanese House, Modern Tango, Bandoneon and more. A pure seduction for the mind, body & soul. George V Records. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome - A Sonic Joyride.......2006-09-05

Masterfully put together, and beautiful in every sense of the word. The two discs in the set (one party and one dinner) set the perfect moods for any occasion. This isn't your typical schlocky compilation - every piece of this musical puzzle fits like a velvet glove. I intend to buy more Buddha Bar's from the series - WOW!

2 out of 5 stars Over-Hyped !!! Chill Out.......2006-08-23

I am going to preface this review with the two things I was fortunate to experience with this CD. First, I was able to purchase this CD for $20 because it was used. Secondly, the CD had a constant skip on disc 1 from tracks 11 on, therefore, I was able to return the CD to my local store and actually exchange it for something else...thank god they did not have another one in stock!!! I was able to listen to this CD for about a week and I gave it a lot of attention and I just could not get into it. I listen to a lot of chill out such as Thievery Corp, Kruder and Dorfmeister, the Del Mar Compilations, Tosca and so forth. With that said, I like a lot of different influences on my chill out whether it's Dub, Jazz, Indian, Bossa Nova, whatever...I'm always down for different sounds. I own the Buddha Bar nature CD and really enjoy it which is why I was really disappointed with this CD. When I purhased this in the store, I was already thinking about which one I would buy next..that is until I started listening to it. There are some good tracks on this CD without a doubt. But overall, it's just not that good and frankly anyone who mixes a friggin disco song like "all by myself" on a chill out CD should be ashamed. I understand that this CD was made in 1999, but Claude Challe was a disappointment. You read all these reviews telling you that it's the definative chill out CD that all others set as a benchmark and that it's legendary. I probably will not buy another Buddha Bar CD again. What's scary is that Challe only mixed the first two and if you notice the reviews on some of the newer ones with Ravin and David Visan, people say they went down hill after Challe stopped after volume 2!!!What are you guys comparing this CD up against??? A good chill out CD should make you feel great and enjoy the whole thing from start to finish. Chances are, you are going to be hitting the remote to change tracks on both of these discs frequently. Maybe, some of the other one's are good, as I have seen some good artists listed on some of the others, but for the price they charge, you may be taking a big gamble if you are not happy with it. Take a look at a CD called Cantoma, mixed by Phil Mison...this is an unbelievable CD. Also, World Dub Pastry is excellent as well as Elemental Chill vols. 1-4. Give the Buddha Bar Nature disc a go..it's at least worth the money, yet not overpriced. If you are going to buy the Buddha Bar vols., I would try to find them used if possible. Good Luck!!!

5 out of 5 stars Trancelike beauty!.......2006-07-11

Buddha-Bar is incredible...this was bought as a replacement of a copy I completely wore out...the cd is a winner for anyone who loves to dance, relax to trance beats or just plain enjoy some unique music!!

Album Description

This fourth installment of the now highly acclaimed Buddha Bar series is presented to you by resident #1 DJ David Visan. After studying music at the Los Angeles Music Institute, Parisian born Visan returned home to France where he was educated in the ways of deejaying by Claude Challe himself (Buddha Bar & Buddha Bar II) His mentor went on to train him in the spirit of the Buddha Bar. Buddha Bar 4 is a new sound adventure and the perfect follow up to its previous volumes. The series grows stronger with each release and IV is no exception. Visan injects new life into this double CD set and unlike the many that have tried to emulate the style of the Buddha Bar he carries you away with as much power, if not more, than those who have previously created the perfect sound in a perfect Bar. Housed in a slipcase. 2002.

Well i think it's a great CD.
But buyers beware!!! Check you CD's!

But other than that, "it's alllllll good."

This double cd collection was very good. I like all of the music. Later on, I do plan on buying more Budda Bar cds. If u are in music that has to do with meditating, relaxing, and just having a good time, BB might just be the one to look up on.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-08

An avid fan of New Age music, I must say that this compilation of music is an excellent choice whether you're out on a long drive or relaxing at home. There is not one track that I didn't like.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent always! with some suggestions .........2006-06-25

Big fan of the Buddha Bar series .. always the best music for all kinds of late night chillout sessions. Love the asian vibe to them .. And if you like that sound, I've recently discovered some more authentic tunes you'll love: Hong Kong's "Celestial". Check them out, they are titled:

Hong Kong Dub Station
Happy Valley
Spirit House

And these album probably take a deeper step into Asia, possibly because they originate from there.

If you are new to the Buddha Bar collection, this might be a good first test to see if you'd like to buy other Buddha Bar disc's. This project are their choices of the best of the Buddha Bar music previously released. There might be one or two original songs on it, maybe. If you have most or all of the other disc's like I do, this might not be for you. I've remixed my own version of the Best of the Buddha Bar music. I paired down the eight volumes the Buddha Bar, three volumes of Siddhartha and one Chill Out in Paris disc's. Remixing those volumes took me six very full CD's not only two. My guess, they will release other volumes like this one. Seems only logical they would since they still likely have the rights to the music.

4 out of 5 stars not the best buddha bar, but far from bad.......2007-01-04

i disagree with the reviewers who have branded this compilation as unoriginal and not memorable. they have perhaps not listened to the first five songs on CD1, which in my opinion make the purchase of this album well worth it on their own. and there are some other good tracks sprinkled here and there throughout both discs; in fact i would argue disc one is very strong throughout.

disc two is perhaps found wanting in comparison to buddha bar IV, but it's hard to blame David Visan for running out of some ideas after putting out 2 disc sets in successive years. but let me get back to the first five tracks on the first disc.

starting with David Visan's own Nie Kantshaietsa, the listener is transported into what i picture as a natural reserve, hearing a woman telling a story about.. something :) enter a flamenco guitar, a piano softly in the background, and the voice of the woman talking about something that i can only describe as fascinatingly unintelligeble :P
it is really all quite captivating, cheesy as it may sound. this really is one of the best opening tracks on any buddha bar in my opinion, and fans of the series will know there have been many many a great one.

the second track by Mikis Theodorakis is sort of grandiose, shorter track, that reminds me a bit of his fellow countryman, Vangelis. it too has oriental flavor however and makes a great lead in to the best song i have ever heard on any buddha bar cd (!!!!!) and that is no small honor..

entitled 'Road,' track 3 is a collaboration among a few different artists, and the result is just stunning. the singer's voice is quiet, enchanting, seductive, and the music is there to match it; deep, resonant bass, catchy beat, unobtrusive background synths and sitar, and occasional, well placed trumpet. she sings both in english and some foreign, presumably eastern tongue that sounds delicious to my ears. not since Oliver Shanti's 'sacral nirvana' has a buddha bar track gripped me as this one has.. it is magnificent.

track 4 by trumpet thing does not quite hold the same standard as 'road,' but it is a worthy follow up. slightly over-cheesy on the vocals, the production is nevertheless good, and the bassline is well appreciable on a good sound system.

this review is getting long so i will wrap it up with a few additional comments about the rest of the album. this does not live up to the overall high standards of volumes I and III, but considering how soon it followed the release of IV, much worse could have been expected. and in 'road' it contains on of the all time greats of buddha bar. CD2 is not all bad either. the emma shapplin track is quite nice, as well as the Despina Vandi track, and David's reconstruction of Liszt in 'Czardas' is quite pleasing.

4 stars for moments of brilliance and a job well enough done despite precious little time to do it.

3 out of 5 stars Good but..........2006-06-30

I enjoy this double disk set but few of the songs have any memorable beats or melodies. Try "Little Buddha Bar" for higher quality music.

3 out of 5 stars There are better options..........2006-06-05

The Buddha Bar sound can be defined as the sound of Asia, put through a Chill Filter, and tuned for Zen relaxation. And if you like that sound, then you'll love the albums from Hong Kong's Celestial. Check them out, they are titled:

Hong Kong Dub Station
Happy Valley
Spirit House

And these album probably take a deeper step into Asia, possibly because they originate from there.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-22

The overall experience was great
The package arrived earlier than forecasted; the CD conditions were perfect and the tracking information accurate
The music is just what I was looking for, friends we've had over for dinner parties are buying it as well

Big fan of the Buddha Bar series .. always the best music for all kinds of late night chillout sessions. Love the asian vibe to them .. And if you like that sound, I've recently discovered some more authentic tunes you'll love: Hong Kong's "Celestial". Check them out, they are titled:

And these album probably take a deeper step into Asia, possibly because they originate from there.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Bliss.......2006-02-25

This is an amazing CD that will capture your soul. I have all of the Buddah Bar CD's and this is by far my favorite. If you like really good trance or want to just hear a good mix of music, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Off the chart.......2005-09-22

I would give this 10 stars, if I were able. This book is a classic, and after reading it, you can undestand why Hesse refused the Nobel Prize for Literature. I have loaned and purchased copies of this book since the early 1960s. This latest copy I bought for my oldest grandson. It's a book like The Little Prince, The Rubiyat, This is My Beloved, and some others that I still buy for new friends and family members who do not have a copy. I think it should be in everyone's library. What? You haven't read Siddhartha yet? What's taking you so long?

It is a nice cd. I keep on listening it whenever I have time.

5 out of 5 stars A new musical genre...Buddha-Bar.......2006-08-22

Buddha-Bar music has become a genre, not just a restaurant-bar. DJ Popat took this genre to its next level; a total chill-out experience. It goes well with dinner, wine, good company, the loving, or just when you want to be alone with yourself enjoying life for what it is, an experience. I thought the Little Buddha Cafe CD was at the top, but this Volume VIII raised the bar for all those chill seekers outhere. Lets see what V IX brings. Can't wait...

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-09

I love this volume VIII. The mix and music choices are just perfect for my taste. I have alle the other Buddha Bar CD's but this is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars A return to fine form.......2006-07-09

I have been a long time admirer of the Buddha Bar series for the last few years. Unfortunately I was mildly disappointed in the last two volumes. The last two volumes had taken a more Indian influence courtesy of DJ Ravin. I had preferred the work of Dave Visan (the son of Raymond Visan, founder of the club/bar Buddha Bar) and Claude Challe who mixed the first three Buddha Bar cds. I was a bit hesitant to buy volume eight because of my mild disappointment but when I found a used but in excellent condition copy, I decided to give the series another shot. I'm glad I did. Sam Popat, the dj at NYC's Buddha Bar, did not fail me. The music re-captures the magic that made me fall in love with the series. Sam Popat breathes in new life into the series with his mix of Asian and modern dance music. I absolutely loved both discs and usually I prefer the more laid back disc over the more dance orientated disc.

4 out of 5 stars awesome!!.......2006-07-01

This actually came as a surprise to me regarding how good this is. I was enjoying a 3 and 1/2 hour layover at IAH (GB Intercontinental Airport, Houston) and perused through a music store. I came across Buddha Bar 8 at a listening station, put on the headphones and before I knew it I was swaying to the music. I think I was putting on quite a show bobbing my head and tapping my fingers and foot. The music will put you in a good mood. My favorite is probably the first track, which begins gently but crescendos into a soaring and upbeat melody. The vocalist is also very expressive, although no distinct words are sung, almost like a vocalise.

I advise you to try this, your heart will soar and your feet will dance!

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2006-05-21

This is just what I expected to be the next volume of this series, excelent, dont miss it!

Album Description

This eighth installment of the now highly acclaimed Buddha Bar series is presented to you by Sam Popat. The series grows stronger with each release and VIII is no exception. Popat injects new life into this double CD set and unlike the many that have tried to emulate the style of the Buddha Bar he carries you away with as much power, if not more, than those who have previously created the perfect sound in a perfect Bar. Wagram. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix.......2007-03-07

I usually listen to this album while I do my homework. Great great stuff. Ever since I bought this I have been trying to desperately find an album by Vasilisa (He does oblak/cloud the second song on disc 2). But seriously a very good mix I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Buddha Bar Lover and collector.......2007-01-24

Must say, the cd dubbed 'Paris' would have fitted a title 'Calcutta'
As for the 'New York' cd, well, that's more like a disco run.
Seems as if BUDDHA BAR series has lost it's sophistication.
What ever happened to the different cultural feels world wide?
Non-the-less, I can't say I dislike the two cds, it's just not BUDDHA BAR anymore. GEORGE V RECORDS GET BACK ON TRACK!!

5 out of 5 stars First time I love both CD's equally.......2006-11-28

The Tiger Popat is unvelievably creative. Les operatic and vocal than Visan; less of Oriental battucada than Ravin (one of my favorite DJ's) and less loungy than Challe. Which means Popat is different and great in his own style. The Tiger controlls the beat masterfully and bulids the diversity of music through instrumentation around the beat.

Good job Sam. I'll definitively go and visit you in NY!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Rebound .......2006-10-14

Buddha Bar VIII is definitely a righting of the ship. After the indifferent BB VI and the abysmal BB VII, this release is a welcome recovery. It returns the franchise to a more varied selection and really keeps the listener engaged. It's clear that BB needed an injection of new blood and Sam Popat has taken that to heart. Not the best BB release, but certainly a positive change in direction. To put this review in a little perspective, here's my ranking of the BB releases from favorite to "not so much"; VI, III, V, II, VIII, I, VI, VII (because I had to rank it somewhere... it is truly is aweful).
