This is the debut album by Ministry leader Al Jourgensen's most infamous side-project band. A sort of underground supergroup, its early contributors included core members of electronic music innovators Front 242 and Ministry, plus solo artists Chris Connelly and Luc Van Acker. Most of the tracks are hard, bare-bone sonic assaults built predominantly around brutally programmed drums. Jourgensen's inventive skill with sound-creation and rhythm programming is abundant on tracks such as "We Shall Cleanse the World" and "Attack Ships on Fire." Bass riffs are coldly propelling, particularly on "38" and the gloomily blasphemous "No Devotion." The variety of vocalists adds to the overall color of the album.

One of the best - REVCO.......2007-04-13
Ministry side project that plays some unbelievably good industrial music. The album opens up with the fast-paced "38" which has Luc VanAcker on vocals. As far as I know, "38" is about a soccer riot that happened at Heysel stadium in Belgium in May 1985 that killed 38 people. One of my favorite songs on the CD. "We Shall Cleanse the World" is another dancey-yet-abrasive song with complex drum beat and a great bass line. Great for driving. "Attack Ships On Fire", which features some excellent Bill Rieflin drumming, is another great song. The remaining songs on this album also noteworthy are "No Devotion" which has a sinister and dark aspect to it, "TV mind" - very strange, "Union Carbide" - harsh abrasive industrial. The other songs and mixes are OK.
Also look into the REVCO album's "Linger Ficken Good" and "Beers, Steers, and Queers". Both are 5 stars.
crazy.......2005-05-20
This cd just has so little going for it. The music is highly repititious, offering nothing in the way of traditional song structure. The lyrics ( what little there are, most are vocal samples, or are terse, shouted refrains ) are laughable. The performances and programming are incredibly stiff ( I just can't see anyone dancing to this stuff). Despite all of this, I find myself inexplicably drawn to this cd again and again. How crazy.
If nothing else, it's all in good humour, something that all other industrial acts have either never learned or never knew to begin with.
The first and the best.......2004-12-14
Contrary to another review, this contains the same mix of You Often Forget that was on the original Wax Trax CD. Now, why they didn't include the Benign Version of that song here (or why it wasn't on the original CD edition), I'll never know. Guess I'll just have to be happy I have the 12"--still.
But, this is industrial the way I like to remember it.... back when it was something new and fresh and you never heard it unless you knew someone who was into it. The kids today might consider this tame, but at least it's not another lame rap/metal hybrid. The kids claim Evanescense is breaking new ground when KMFDM did the same thing a decade beforehand, and better (female vocals over heavy music).
Guess I'm just old. :) Regardless, if you don't have this disc, g'ahead and get it.
Way Ahead of Its of Time.......2004-11-16
Big Sexy Land could be the best industrial album ever. From the first song to the last song the album's beats never stop. This addition also adds the 12" single You Often Forget which was never previously available on compact disc. It's hard to believe that this album is almost 20 years old because almost every once of these tracks could still be played at any club and bring down this house and make people wonder, what is this!

A Wax Trax! classic.......2006-07-03
I like every song on this release. If you've heard Ministry, Twitch and like it, I'd recommend you check this one out as well. It also even features Richard 23 of Front 242. It's classic industrial and classic Wax Trax! in my book. I don't know how anyone who likes industrial music could not like this release.
A product of its time, it did not age well! RUN AWAY!.......2003-10-14
Yeah, "I was there" too. Wax Trax, Smax Tracks. Yadda, yadda, the Chicago industrial scene sure was fun until people started dying or simply lying, strung out on crack and drano speedballs, in the alley outside Smart Bar! The band's name sure was shocking at the time! Yikes! But it's the music that counts: slow, deliberate and dimwitted drum programs combined with samples from "The Omega Man" (almost ruining my memories of that great Chuck Heston film) ..Frankly, you're wasting your money on this CD--there are plenty of other, more interesting bands from the era. I won't name them because if you've made it this far, you probably already know them. Another thing: there's a socially responsable reason to not purchase this disc...unless you want to contribute to "Alain" Jourgensen's notorious heroin habit! A VH1 "Behind the Music" segment should be entirely devoted to enumerating his various shades of jaundiced skin!
Run, run, now! If you must, listen to the samples provided and move on to something actually worth buying by typing the words "Pixies" or "Superchunk" in the search engine box. But _do_ see "The Omega Man"!
Nothing around today comes close to this album!.......2002-12-05
The first time I heard this album was indeed at Wax Trax Records in Chicago in 1986! I quickly scooped up the album and a few 12" singles, not to mention some Ministry singles as well! As far as some of us are concerned, Ministry was THE industrial band! Along with others such as Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, etc. The places to dance in Chicago at the time were Neos, Medusas, and the Smart Bar. However, all good things must come to an end! I grew weary of Ministry once they delved into metal and of course they quickly lost many fans especially once they moved down to Austin! Seems like the Texas heat somewhat may have affected their writing and musical style. Who knows? However, I do know that I did not buy their last album nor their last DVD release of a live concert which totally [not good] according to a friend of mine. I will however, advise you to buy their DVD release, Tapes of Wrath. This dvd will, bring back good memories!
ps. I know I was supposed to review REVCO but I got carried away!
Like a P------ Off Industrial Devo.......2001-05-18
If you walked through the now long gone Wax Track records shop in Chicago any time in that late 80's, there was a very good chance that this record was playing.
The industrial-club sound got so hot in Chicago at that time that Ministry's "Halloween" was used by Heilimen in an Old Style commercial.
This is an odd sound in that doesn't feel much like music until you hand yourself over to it. The hook here is rythem...and it sneaks up on you.
Later Cocks' work, like later Ministry, started to blur into a more savage metal sound, losing the clear, savage percussive bleatings that makes this album so addictive.
As far as this album is concerned, I have always felt that there aren't nearly enough pieces of cover art that feature naked busty women kissing dogs.
Fun.
The album that took industrial music out of the dark ages........2000-03-02
This album first heard in 1986. Al Jourgensen interviewed KUSF San Francisco. Einsturzende Neubauten bye bye. Big throbbing beat come. BOOM-KAWAKAA-BOOM-KAWAKAA! 150, 160 BPM -- go higher? You bet! Speed new drug. You buy!
