The Finnish boys' sophomore effort is christened with samples about "cutting" and wicky-wicky, Blaxploitation-style guitars. Another downtempo hip-hop production to throw into the pile? Nope. Beatitude goes all over the map: surf guitar, wah-wah guitar, acoustic guitar, all coming together to make it, well, pretty guitar-heavy compared to their debut, Super Sound. Pepe Deluxe collaborates with nearly 40 other musicians here, flipping soul samples over a nice Bollywood-esqe creation, tinged with some acidy synth ("Girl"). Later they reach into commercial territory on "Ask for a Kiss," which sounds readymade for a Gap commercial. Styles pile alongside each other, and Beatitude kind of comes off as a hodgepodge. But despite the absence of a conceptual framework, the unfocused sprawl is part of the appeal. It's not Endtroducing or Deadringer, but some kind of martini-swilling, music-buff relative of those - one that wants to make you dance and then have sex with you. No problem then.

Cool Quirky Album.......2005-05-06

I, like many Cars fans, was a little disappointed when I first heard "Beatitude" because I was hoping for a return to "the old Cars sound." "Something To Grab For" gave me that hope before I bought "Beat...," so of course I was initially let down. But I later appreciated this album for what it is: a quirky Ocasek classic (the evil-twin of "Panorama?"). "A Quick One," in and of itself, is reason enough to own this gem.

Very good solo effort.......2004-11-22

Besides what other reviewers in this section will tell you this is a good album, especially the first half. I haven't owned it for awhile but i remember enjoying many of it's songs. Besides "Something to grab for" "Jimmy Jimmy" is excellent, "I can't wait" and "Connect up to me" are also very good. If you like Ric Ocasek with the Cars you will like him on this album without them. And the video for "Something To Grab for" was great!

Something of a disappointment.......2004-04-26

In my opinion, the lead single from this album, Something To Grab For, is one of the great forgotten tunes of the early MTV years, and I bought the album fully expecting it to be as enjoyable as that song and the Car's songs that came before it. Unfortunately it didn't happen that way. I've listened to it time and again over the years and never find myself able to make a connection with anything but Something To Grab For, no matter how many serious listenings I subject it to. After this Ric's solo stuff got progressively more odd, so I guess it's to be expected that he started losing me right off the bat.

I grew up listening to the Cars. I love every Cars album ever made. I also like all of Ric Ocasek's solo albums... except for this one. I actually picked this one up in a bargin section of a record store that I can't remember the name of in Plainfield NJ. My friend and I listened it on the 1 1/2 hour ride home. It is the single worst thing I have ever heard...period. I tossed it out onto Route 287 it was so bad. Now, I know what you are thinking, i didn't give it a chance, well, to that I say, why would I want to take another bite of a turd that made me vomit up everything I've eaten in the last 12 years? I can sum up this album with one word...Woof.

Different genres explored in one remarkable CD.......2006-07-09

This is an exceptionally good electronica CD. Though many styles are covered here (downtempo, trip-hop, nu-jazz, funk, etc.), the transition between cuts is smooth and seemless, and the overall mood is mellow without being lazy. I can guarantee that you'll listen to it over and over again in order to enjoy the nuances and appreciate the many layers throughout. Excellent.

Spanning the globe in one CD.......2005-02-04

I first bought this CD a full year before I really understood what a collection it is. It starts with a funky, Greyboy-meets-Crystal Method track, then expands into Motown soul ("Girl!"), Blaxploitation funk ("Daddy's Blazin BBQ") and eventually into Turkish/Arabian/Indian pop ("Numa"). There are sexy downtempo grooves with silky female voices ("Lying Peacefully" and "Cruel Youth"), but for me, the crowning moment is "Vamos Muchachos," a rousing Mexican art rock tune that is absolutely irresistible. If you like the variety expressed by acts like Tutto Matto, Groove Armada, and Rae & Christian, this could well make your "Best" list.

Some good stuff here.......2003-12-03

This disc is, as the other reviewers have noted, funky. These two have created a fresh and dynamic bunch of tunes that will put a smile on your face. The songs are all over the place, but the transitions are smooth and surprising, just the way you want them to be. The disc has a few standouts, "Girl" amongst them. There are, however, also a few filler tracks. Oh well.

Five letters says it all..."FUNKY"!!!.......2003-10-08

"Hey babe, Whats your Sign?" is your introduction to Pepe Deluxes topper SuperSound. After a few listens you wont stop groovin to the material on their new disk. Add together all their signature ingredients of funky lounge & a groovy beat and this will have any nondancer shaking their rumps. Just as the funk of "Just Let Go" sucks you in Track 2 continues with more of the Pepe energy "Just Let Go" delivering that funk that takes you to that higher state of mind. There really isn't much filler on this 14 track disk and even shows you their talent on the rare groove number "Girl." Dig a little deeper into this disk and you'll hear their Morricone influence on "Black Caddilac" then back on up for some serious rockin funk with "Indifference." Though you will hear a mix bag of sounds on this disk you'll never get bored. Just as I thought I heard all their suprises comes the funky Bollywood number on "Cruel Youth." This has got to be my favorite CD of the month perhaps year so go out and run to buy this gem of gems!

Hold onto your hats--this one's a real showstopper. Libby Larsen is one of a handful of American composers working entirely outside the mainstream (i.e., the Minimalist vein), and she is doing so quite successfully. Her works are characterized by their intelligence and their accessibility. Larsen tends to work on smaller canvases, and her String Symphony (1998) here is a good example. It's a robust, somewhat acerbic work that is reminiscent of (but not derivative from) Ned Rorem's 1985 String Symphony. The two collections of songs on the disc have the same bitter sweetness as the String Symphony, but they are more melodically enhanced by Larsen's distinct lyricism. Songs of Light and Love are based on the poems of May Sarton. Songs from Letters (1999) are from the letters of Calamity Jane to her daughter, Janey. Soprano Benita Valente simply dazzles here. This is an excellent introduction to a fine composer. --Paul Cook

Elegance and Beauty.......2000-08-24

I've always been a fan of Libby Larsen's writing, but she has surpassed everything else I've ever heard with the pieces selected for this recording. The string symphony took me through many different emotions, from the first sun of the morning, to the setting sun. Songs of Light and Love is just a masterpiece; the writing complements the poetry perfectly, and the performances are first rate. My favorite thing on this recording, though, is the last movement of the Songs from Letters. Benita Valente sounds as if she understands exactly what it means to have love and lost.
