Much anticipated, long overdue, and well worth the wait, the full-length debut from Sam Zaman (a.k.a. State of Bengal) propels him straight to the head of the class of progressive drum & bass and global groove. Along with Talvin Singh, State of Bengal is one of the pillars of London's Asian Underground scene documented on the classic Anokha collection of DJs and drum & bass renegades. Liberally and ingenuously mixing Bengali folk music with Western dance music, State of Bengal cooks up an exquisite blend that effortlessly marries the traditional to the up-to-the-moment. In fact, the blend is what Zaman really excels at, bringing jazzy sax and funky guitar together with jittery drum loops in "Chittagong Chill" while putting a harmonium and cut-up vocals against tablas and violins in "Taki Naki." Zaman clearly takes delight in fusing the musical language of his Pakistani roots with whatever strikes his fancy--listen to the slightly goofy "Elephant Ride" or the insistent down-shifting groove of "Hunters" to hear the sound of a man truly enjoying his work. Zaman is much more than just another clever mixologist: he's a true craftsman and visionary with perfect instincts for getting the most out of every moment. He's also gifted with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of good ideas. The years of DJ'ing, mixing, producing, and playing (he plays bass and percussion), including remixes for such heavyweights as Massive Attack and the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, have paid off in experience and a broad perspective. State of Bengal? State of the art--and then some. --Carl Hanni

Regine: Asia's Songbird greatest hits shines.......2005-09-07
1. Sa Aking Pag-Iisa (My Loneliness) (Remix Version) - *** 3/5 - I personally don't like the remix version, it sounds weird. In the beginning it sounded nice and slow, and soon later, the beat became more techno and upbeat which sounds horrible. The music video look better then the rest.
2. Ikaw (You) - ** 2/5 - I like the song...but I don't like the way she sang it. The original version of Sharon Cuneta is much better. Music video looks so choppy.
3. Fallin - **** 4/5 - At first I didn't like it, but after hearing it over and over again, I began to like it more. The music video is a different as it doesn't make sense.
4. Pangako (Promise) - *** 3/5 - A popular song, but I grew tired of hearing it. The music video is nice though.
5. Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw (I Need You)- ***** 5/5 - Another popular song, but alike the other one, this one is better. She isn't yelling throughout the song. The music video is really nice, and touching.
6. One Love - **** 4/5 - A Nice song for me sleep to; very soothing to the ears. Music video is very nice, and the guy is cute too. To bad he's with a girl.
7. To Reach You - ***** 5/5 - One of my favorite top songs of hers! Absolutely a nice love song, I just can't stop playing it over and over again. Though, the music video is very weird (The angel that looks like the grudge), it ain't bad either.
8. Hanggang Ngayon (Even Now) - *** 3/5 - Nice song but not really fond of it. Music video has a scenic scenes in it, it doesn't look choppy.
9. Your Are My Song - **** 4/5 - This is such a old song, but such a classic. The guy playing the piano in the video is cute.
10. In Your Eyes - **** 4/5 - At first I thought she was singing in a group, but it was all her singing. Very creative, but there are some parts of the songs where she is over doing it. The video ain't bad either.
11. Lost Without YOur Love - ** 2/5 - Don't really like the song sorry. Video is ok.
12. Dadalhin (Take You) - *** 3/5 - The song is ok, the music video is where she is singing the song live at her concert.
13. For The Love Of You - 0/5 - Perhaps the only song i hate in this album. Although the one guy in the video is cute, the video is so corny.
14. On The Wings Love - ***** 5/5 - Love, Love, Love this song. The video is quite corny.
Overall - **** 4/5 The songs are nice but some songs a not loud enough. The vcd is not that all great, they could make it better, but other then that, its a o k!

State of Unfulfilled Expectations.......2003-01-31
State of Bengal is the stage name of fusion DJ extraordinaire Sam Zaman, member of the hot Asian Underground scene in London. Zaman blends jazz, funk, techno, and Indian power pop together in surprising and often eminently pleasing ways. He has remixed some of the greats, including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and appeared on several popular world fusion compilation CDs. His singles and remixes created a pent-up demand and high expectations for his full-length release, which seemed to take forever to come out. Visual Audio is that first release. However, it fails to reach expectations with some bad tracks mixed amongst the good ones and alas, two of the good ones were previously released as singles.
When it is at its best, Visual Audio is chill out music on the order of Thievery Corporation. It's ambient with a healthy dose of funk rhythms. All-in-all though, the album is uneven and at times uninspired. The album starts slow. While the opening track, "Flight IC408" is a favorite of many (was previously released on the Anokha compilation) and is fun and interesting, but no song should have as long and slow a beginning as this one does. It begins with one of the longest samples in recording history and it is well over a minute before anything really interesting happens in the song. Once it finally does, the Indian-styled keyboards, syncopated drums, and funky vocals are fun in a casual way. Some great musical ideas here, but could use a good remix.
The second track, "Elephant Ride," is, sorry to say, just too repetitive and uninteresting. It has a good central rift, in true Asian Underground style. Yet, no rift, no matter how good, should be repeated for four minutes. Zaman never explores the theme he sets up. Again, a great candidate for a remix.
Finally, the third track, "Burn Your Toes" gives us what we are looking for: a cool mix of female south Asian vocals, new wave jazz and scat vocals.
Mournful saxophone opens "Chittagong Chill" and, joined by a light syncopated drum line, carries the song for several minutes. Then it suddenly gives way to the frenzy of Indian vocal percussion. As you might guess, Indian vocal percussion is mimicking drums with the voice and some practitioners produce amazing rhythms this way (de dak ka dee doe ta tee doo doo) A massive track.
"Taki Naki" is a strange little number, an homage to cheesy Indian pop music. Common to many south and southeast Asian music is a woman singing falsetto creating this incredibly high pitched voice. "Taki Naki" samples a female falsetto and blends it with harmonium and tablas. It's a catchy and fun tune.
"Red Earth" and "Hunters" follow with spacey downtempo grooves. They are built on syncopated percussion loops clearly Indian in origin. Good but not great tracks, suffering again from over repetitiveness.
The album descends into a creative desert starting with "Ek Bullet." The track throws down some drum-and-bass, which is probably above average but still suffers from the repetitive mind-numbing boredom endemic to the genre.
"Rama Communication" goes psychedelic with drones, flutes, and spacey vocals and though Zaman almost ruins it with a clichéd stutter vocal effect the song survives.
"Hectic City" actually is ruined, first by stutters and poor wailing vocals giving way to unoriginal American drum-and-bass. I don't know what Zaman was thinking on this track.
Just when you've given up hope, Zaman rediscovers his Pakistani roots with "Music Is." Ahhhhhh, here is the song that fulfills all of Zaman's promise. With the vocal line "Music is the only language I really know," intermingled with sitar-sounding strings, drones, and tabla, it closes out the album in high style.
While there are periods of tedium in this album, you can tell that this happens only when Zaman leaves his heritage behind and falls into run-of-the-mill Western rhythms. Zaman really excels when he fully embraces fusion blending jazzy sax, funky guitar, drones, and tablas. He is gifted with some great ideas, but he has yet to show that he is capable of more than remixing other artists and creating a few decent songs.
Hearing this makes me dance!.......2002-08-16
NOT DIRTY ENOUGH.......2002-08-11
Adding another dimension to English music.......2002-03-09
Let me explain.
The music scene is alive and well and constantly being replenished in good old Blighty! Never standing still the UK scene is a broad church with constant exposure to new influences. In the pop music genre this has always been true. From the moment Cliff Richard came to prominence, actually before but he is a good a place as any to start, Britain has taken the music from elsewhere and turned it into something else with a tendency to re-export to the originator country. Of course the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were the pre-eminent examples of this.
It failed with the Beach Boys however as the surfing scene in Britain leaves a lot to be desired.
Over the recent decades or so, British popular culture has continued to evolve in it's generally free wheelin' anarchic way. You can see it everywhere! A member of the British government made it official. The most popular culinary dish in Britain is not fish and chips anymore it is Chicken Tikka Masahla. And so it is with the popular music. What is Bhangra was the title of one CD in the early 1990s. This music is not Bhangra. It is interesting and novel. It uses traditional influences and combines them with various aspects of dance music.
What results is a marvellous collectionwhich is a feast for the ears, the mind and the body. I don't like to categorize music like this because I am not knowledgeable on the subject. This music deserves exposure to a wider audience. It sound good and hopefully is an indicator of more to come.
Open your mind prepare your senses say the sleeve notes. I totally condone that view. Lets have more like it.

This breathtaking performance displays why Bad Brains became one of the most important bands in the history of American Hardcore. On Christmas Eve 1982, Bad Brains began their three-day stint at a Hardcore Festival hosted by legendary CBGB. This CD represents the very best of these shows, culled from over 4 hours of footage. Their live performances were legendary. Now, for the first time on CD, that powerful performance is revisited in extraordinary fashion.

Bleach Brings Back the Baseline!!!.......2005-10-25
For those already familiar with Bleach, I need not review the audio disc. It's a humble collection of some of their best, with a few new surprises thrown in for fun. The track order seems to roughly follow them chronologically from the early days to the end. One could certainly debate the track selection (where are "Once Again Here We Are" and "Sufficient"!?), but I won't do that here. Instead I'll recommend you pick up any of their six studio albums you might be missing!
I'll also briefly mention that I was at the farewell show in Nashville on August 29, 2004, when the video DVD was recorded. An amazing show. Bittersweet. Loud. Long. A perfect farewell. Just amazing.
Now for those who have never heard Bleach, I will compare their sound to that of Weezer or Jimmy Eat World. Guitar-driven modern rock that makes you smile (and - once in a while - melancholy, but always with a hint of hope just over the horizon). Mostly bouncy, hook-filled rock that makes you want to jump around. And then the occasional sweet, barebones ballad so simply yet skillfully constructed you can't escape the deep emotion behind every word.
The things that set Bleach apart for me were their awesome live show (thus making the DVD an exciting part of this offering) and their superb songwriting. These guys know how to assemble catchy tunes that you can't get out of your head! After one listen you'll be humming some of these tunes for days.
Additionally, Bleach lyrics run far deeper than most. You will find themes such as true joy in the midst of pain, friendship, and redemption handled with a directness, maturity, and authenticity that will draw you in. Their more worshipful tunes exalt the name of Jesus and the goodness of God without ever being cliché or trite. There isn't a hint of the plastic, too-happy, good-time Sunday School "cheese" that sadly pervades a lot of modern Christian music, especially in this genre. These guys were real; they wore their Midwestern down-home humility on their sleeves. Their genuine, fun-loving warmth and simple humanity come across in every song.
These boys went through some hard times individually and as a band. Notably, the death of Cpt. Josh Byers (brother of drummer Jared and guitarist Milam, and close Bleach supporter) in Iraq, 2003, was a hugely painful event for the entire band. Through their pain they held fast to their hope in Christ, and then went into the studio to pour it all out with a passion and true determination that comes across loud and clear, especially in the tracks recorded towards the end of their career.
"There is hope for the hopeless / There are mansions for the meek / There is life after this life / The pure in heart will receive..."
I highly recommend this disc to anyone who likes quality, melodic, American, guitar-driven rock 'n' roll with few frills. As vocalist Davy sings in their career-closing track "Farewell Old Friends":
"This has been the best it could have been..."
