Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15

I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.

My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

5 out of 5 stars MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13

This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!

5 out of 5 stars A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18

I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-06-12

The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17

If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)

1 out of 5 stars NEGATIVE FIVE stars would be a better rating.......2004-02-20

Sadly, Brad Roberts has laid another rotten egg with this boring , uninspired drivel.
The first two Dummies albums were works of genus (Ghosts that Haunt Me and God Shuffled his feet)
Brad has either run out of ideas or motivation as every work since has been a collection of monotonous droning.
He needs to get back to his roots or give it up.

5 out of 5 stars No, this is a FIVE star CD.......2003-10-18

this is a welcome refreshing outing by CTD. I really enjoy the freshness to it. many folks have noted that it sounds like they didn't spend too much time editing these songs.. and I agree. They really sound garage bar like but wonderful none the less.

I think that the fans of CTD will enjoy this recording due to the fact that the bass rattling baratone of Brad Roberts is back, after a hiatus on GYAH.

The songs do have a Chris Issack meets the Eagles type of sound, but not really. All CTD's here.

Have ye fun.

Update...

I had originally bought this CD a couple weeks ago. I listened to it and reviewed it. I oringally gave it four stars. but after two good solid weeks of listening to this CD, I really think it is outstanding and deserving of a 5 star rating. I have not taken this CD out of my stereo in quite some time... and if I do, it is to play the new Elvis Costello 'North' CD. They rotate. both are great.

4 out of 5 stars Dummies' best album, a real mood piece........2003-08-05

With this album, the latest work from the Crash Test Dummies (barring the rehashed Christmas album Jingle All The Way), megalomaniac (read: Brad owns the band name, but Brad's band is NOT the actual Crash Test Dummies on this album... however, since a few of them appeared on the tour, it was renamed as a CTD album during production) singer Brad Roberts may have constructed the ultimate concept album for one of two situations, the first being hanging out, or driving in, the rain (as contemplated in "On And On"). The second is proposed in "Buzzing Flies": the days when you're sitting on your arse in 100+ degree heat and lamenting your life. Therefore, the whole album has become a soundtrack to my life, as I find myself in both situations frequently. Here are some highlights.

The title track opens, featuring a "we're rolling now" intro. It appears they didn't spend a lot of time on some of these tracks in the mixing and editing process. However, these sort of little studio insights give us a real, dare I say, insight to the album itself, and Brad Roberts' mind as well, if you're bold enough to go there. This title track is traditional Dummies with a new country sound, a very minimalist and low-key sound. Ellen Reid delivers an excellent backup vocal performance, as always.

Track 2 and second single "On And On" is a simple little number with a catchy melody and one of Roberts' more vibrant lyrical/sonic performances on the album. This is about as loud as it's going to get. Third single and only video "The Day We Never Met" has very clever lyrics about actually falling in love with someone who really doesn't exist. It features an extended piece of music from Brad's Band at the end, which balances the lyrics nicely. One of the nicer pieces of music on the album.

"Let It Feel Like Something Else" and "Little Secret" are two countrified tracks that could have come off of Give Yourself A Hand, with their keyboard leads and bassier sound. However, they're still rooted in twang, so don't get your hopes up if you want more GYAH.

"Buzzin' Flies", my personal favorite, features Brad singing over a minimalist guitar line, some drums, and a squeaky old transistor radio. These are some of the best lyrics in the band's catalog IMO. However, it sounds a lot like "On And On" and the next track "Yer Devil Ways", which is again slow and has a rainy-driving feel.

First single "Every Morning" is nearly as catchy as "On And On", but from hearing this song on the radio a lot when the album came out, I don't listen to it very often. Has a verse about masturbation, which is the ultimate topic to prove Brad Roberts' megalomania.

If you like the sixth album, Jingle All The Way, you'll like "Never Comin' Back". Featuring Ellen Reid and a big bright organ front and center, Brad Roberts jumps in with an excellent vocal and content that juxtaposes nicely against the far-too-upbeat organ line. The band has always been famous for pulling such tricks.

"Shoot 'Em Up..." is the climax of the record, and one of my favorites. I recommend that readers go and download this song to get at the essence of the album before you buy it. A typical Brad Roberts number. Nothing like it: "I shot an ol' bottle with my favorite gun just last night/
It shattered and the sound made me feel like the king I am". It doesn't get much better than this. Crack open a beer with Brad, sit back, and watch the stars shine. Get them devil women out of yer town. Drive your car faster than you should through a late afternoon rainshower. Get a hangover the next day and try to take your mind off it by sitting out in the sun.

But you won't be able to exploit any of these moments till you buy the Crash Test Dummies' best album.

5 out of 5 stars What are you talking about?!.......2003-04-03

This is an incredible album - great lyrics, excellent guitar breaks, another new Dummies sound - a melancholy 'Southern feel that works great, and is a sharp contrast to the funky hard rock of Give Yourself A Hand. Ellen Reid's harmonies are as beautiful as ever, and hear me now you - BRAD ROBERTS IS STILL AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CRASH TEST DUMMIES LEAD SINGER. A reviewer 'helpfully pointed out' that CTD had a new lead singer who tried to sound like the old one. Yep, looks like him too. And has the same name! Hey! Wait a second....could it be..? Why not check your cd sleeves before you make absurd claims like that.

2 out of 5 stars Popylupyshoopy.......2002-06-24

This new CTD album, or should I say Brad Roberts album, is decent. Not as bad as the messy and shallow (yet strangely intriguing) Give Yourself a Hand, but nowhere near as rich and emotionally charged as the first 3 CTD albums (all classics, especially A Worm's Life). My problem with the new Dummies image is. . .WHERE ARE ALL THE STORIES??? The earlier albums always contained Brad's quirky tales about household appliances, Biblical figures, garbage, scabs, ducks, pulling teeth, etc. I'm all for groups reinventing themselves, but these songs are just too cynical and commonplace to warrant multiple listenings.

This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars a beat junkie's delight..........2005-01-29

I had the opportuniy to buy this album and I kicked myself for not doing so when it was first released. It was pretty hard to come by here in the states. After hearing there debut and remix work for the likes of Courtney Pine, Beanfield and others I knew I would not be disappointed. I spotted this on Amazon for a really good price and even though it's more than three years after it's initial release... it is classic. Roba's vocals have more range, while Dark and Nwachukwuback's
layered beats and arrangements never cease to amaze. Standouts include the synth looping 'Deeper' , the pounding hip-hop ballad "It's Not Enough", the raw beats and standup bass of "Mangled", the rock infused "Just an Avenue". 'The Man' has an eerie looped soundtrack bit that's reminiscent of the happy munchkin scene from the Wizard of OZ. In the song's misogynist context though it sounds pretty menacing. My favorite, the broken beat poetry of 'The Quest' seeks advances in Hip Hop and questions its existence in contemporary times. More than Trip hop, more than Hip- Hop. This time out Attica play with genres as much as they play with the beats they flipped on their debut.

5 out of 5 stars Different and Tasteful.......2001-06-14

Well, I'm not gonna lie, but I've heard of these guys over the internet and by chance the local independent record store had it and I've bought it without even giving it a listen and man, it's the best CD that I've ever heard. It's James Bond meets Maxwell Smart 3000 type of style. The intro leads you to a more sophisticated style of acid jazz begining with the first track "Deeper". Now that is a jam with a 60's type of vibe. The synthesizer just overwhelms the mind with the

realism of how music should be vs. what normal people listen to today. This is a new form of music and a new form of acid jazz. For fans of Incognito, Groove Collective, Jamiroquai, and Omar, I urge you to go and pick up this CD, and when you do, check out track 3 "What Do You Want".

now on a new record label and a evolved sound and style the three band trio consist of r. el-essawy gracing the vocals with a soulful organic rawness and charlie dark and nwachukwuback engraving there talents in the form of beats to extend the rail road tracks of trip hop. in this new alblum they explore out lyric and sounds blending hip hop, jazz, r&b, reggae, rock, and put the ingredents into this melting pot to form a unique sound thats different from there debut alblum. each song stands out with it's own individual flavor. from begaining to end your on a train ride up and down, fast and slow through the urban minds and soul of these three. i'm really feeling this alblum and it hasn't left my c.d. player since i bought it this is one the years top trip hop ablums to check out.

This satisfies the soul in every way - its contemplative manner is cinematic.....it picks you up like a giant magic carpet and lets your mind drift through a gentle explosion of urban blues, dance and soul.

Utterley masterful......why it has not enjoyed more acclaim is mysterious. Maybe its one of those beautiful albums destined only to be enjoyed by the discernable few.

      Not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars this is by far the best album of 2000. shame it is unheard!.......2001-02-10

how can music this good and vocals as stunning as this pass by un-noticed and un-recognised! Hear it and believe it!
