3 out of 5 stars A handful of memorable songs help elevate this otherwise forgettable album.......2007-07-17

My first exposure to Breaking Benjamin was with their mainstream breakthrough hit, "So Cold". I liked the song quite a bit, but since I never heard anything else from the album I liked, I passed on buying "We Are Not Alone", so I'll say up front I have next to no knowledge of the band's previous albums. Upon first hearing the catchy, fast paced "Diary of Jane", it immediately replaced "So Cold" as my favorite song by the band, and I was somewhat interested in their new album, "Phobia". Then "Breath" came out, and though it wasn't as instantly memorable as "Diary of Jane", eventually it grew on me big time, and I again had a new favorite song by the band. So after becoming hooked on the first two singles off of "Phobia", I decided it was time to make my first Breaking Benjamin album purchase. However, after multiple listens of the album, "Breath" and "Diary of Jane" are easily the best songs, and there are only a few others that are worth noting.

The album begins and ends with the pointless "Phobia (Intro)" and "Phobia (Outro)" tracks, and after the "Intro" we are given the two best songs right off the bat, those being the aforementioned first two singles. "The Diary of Jane" is a hook filled heavy rocker, seemingly about a guy desperately trying to get the attention of a girl(Jane), yet "somethings getting in the way". "Breath" is a uniquely arranged song that steadily builds up to its climactic chorus, and is possibly about an unhealthy relationship where both seem to hate the other, yet they can't live without each other.

Moving on, back to back filler tracks "You" and "Evil Angel" quickly bring the album down from the high of its first two songs, with "You" possibly being my least favorite song of the album, and though "Evil Angel" has some intriguing lyrics about just wanting to be put out of one's misery, the song just doesn't stick. Thankfully "Until The End" brings the album a little out of its rut, as a song about perseverance no matter what, its uplifting message definitely stands out against the dark and depressing tone of most of the album. It's one of the lighter songs on here, and it has a memorable chorus. Following this is "Dance With the Devil", my favorite song after "Breath" and "Diary of Jane". This is a very dark and atmospheric song, and I hope this is released as a single.

"Topless" is a heavy rocker with some rather explicit lyrics, this is another song on the album that I do like, and is a good aggressive rock song. Next comes "Here We Are" arguably the only "ballad" on the album. This is a decent song about someone wanting his significant other to put more effort into keeping their relationship alive, but it's fairly generic among all the other rock ballads, and kind of seems like its there just for the sake of having a power ballad. The remaining three songs ("Unknown Soldier", "Had Enough", and "You Fight Me") are all mediocre at best, with "Unknown Soldier" probably being the most memorable of the three.

All in all, if you like current heavy rock, "Phobia" is probably a worthy purchase , due to the fact that there are a few really good tracks to be found, but in the end too much of the album is forgettable for me to really praise it. I'd recommend Three Days Grace "One-X" over "Phobia" for fans of mainstream rock looking for a fairly recent album to buy. As it stands my biggest thing to fear about "Phobia" is that it simply won't have a lot of longevity. 3/5 stars

My Top 5:
1. Breath
2. The Diary of Jane
3. Dance With the Devil
4. Until the End
5. Topless

5 out of 5 stars Took Me By Suprise.......2007-07-13

I ran across a link to stream this album before it's release, and I wasn't a big fan of BB before, but I figured why not? Make my friend jealous I heard it and he didn't, but after listening to it, I fell in love with the cd and I haven't stopped listening.
Intro-
Diary Of Jane- Starts out the album dramatically strong 5/5
Breath- Helps progress the cd into a better sound 5/5
You- A song that's harder to adjust to, but still amazing 4.5/5
Evil Angel- A lyrically brilliant song that shows the brains of Ben 5/5
Until The End- The best song of the cd, and arguabbly of the year 5/5
Dance With The Devil- Another lyrical genius is showing here 5/5
Topless- The worst song on the cd, worth skipping 1/5
Here We Are-A softer song and still brilliant 5/5
Unknown Soldier- Still fighting side by side with a slower song and brilliance 5/5
Had Enough- A song about their former drummer for them, and a song about anyone to us, amazing! 5/5
You Fight Me- One amazing way to end a cd, it makes you beg for more, but there is unfortanetly none 5/5

Diary of Jane (Acoustic)

The best album of the year...Period!!! This cd is the beginning of this band that will make them evolve into something amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Breaking Benjamin Has Created a Masterpiece.......2007-06-30

Aside from two bad songs(Until the End and Here We Are), this is Breaking Benjamin at their best. Every song on this album other than the 2 previously mentioned could be a hit single. Once you hear this album you won't be able to stop replaying over and over again, it is almost inhuman how great this band is. Includes some of the best songs ever made from THE BEST rock band currently around: Diary of Jane, Breath, You, Dance with the Devil, Topless, Unknown Soldier, You Fight Me. Your life simply is not complete without this album. GO BUY IT NOW!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars good music.......2007-06-12

can listen to this one over and over again

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-06-08

Minus one star right off the bat for having a lame intro and outro. Diary of Jane is the only great song on this album. 2 or 3 good songs, and the rest just sounds so generic and uninspired. We Are Not Alone was a great album and so was Saturate. It sounds like the energy was lost in this album. I'm not counting the band out yet, but if you want your BB fix stick with the first two albums.

5 out of 5 stars great band,great cd-dvd.......2007-07-22

breaking benjamin is a metal/rock band on the rise to stardom. the dvd captures their energy and talents live in concert. i was at that performance in feb. 2007. i still enjoy watching it over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT CD bonus DVD.......2007-07-11

Love their album phobia, breaking benjamin definantly records great music onto their albums. Most of the songs they have on their disc sounds incredible so I decide to check out the DVD that comes with the album. Perhaps it was that particular show I dont know.. but I must say that I expected more in their live performance on the DVD, but the DVD is good none the less.

5 out of 5 stars Get this edition for first time Phobia buyers, and a great addition for existing BB fans........2007-05-15

I ran accross this at the store the other day and forgot that it had come out. If you don't already own the CD, then this is the edition to buy. If you own it, then you should replace it with this one. It has all the songs of the origninal Phobia and the enhanced protion of the CD. Also included it the bonus Diary of Jane Acoustic track on the CD portion, similar to what they did with "We are not Alone" adding rain 2005 on re-release. But, the kicker is a full 60 minute concert DVD of the tour only available with this set. It was the live recording of the concert in their hometown of Bethleham, Pennsylvania. They play a great show, decent camera work and great audio. I was suprised they did not play the song "rain" as an encoure or even during the set, but that's ok, still a great DVD. I hope this is a prelude to a seperate DVD. Anyway, well worth the 2-3 dollars more this may run than the single CD copy.

5 out of 5 stars Phobia (Collecters Edition) .......2007-04-23

I do have Phobia the standard edition. I got the Collecters edition for the DVD and it is very awesome! I can't wait to see them at Edge Fest! It's going to be very awesome!!!

One night though while I was listening the standard edition I wanted to stop playing it, because I had a tight feeling on my chest I felt like I couldn't breathe. It freaked me out!

This CD/DVD is great! Listen to it and see them live!

4 out of 5 stars 5+ for the album...3 for the DVD.......2007-04-19

This is one of my favorite albums of all time...seriously. I listen to classic rock, hard rock, alternative, progressive, and some country. If you like anything around the genres of melodic hard rock or progressive rock, you'll probably love it too. It has a bit of a dark flavor to it (similar to Staind or Three Days Grace), but it moves along very smoothly without excessive gravel (there's a little here and there for effect...nicely done).

Now the DVD. First, it's very well done audiowise and visually. The camera work is nice with good editing. The audio is good. The musicianship is excellent. But, the singing is somewhat of a dissapointment. Sadly, much of it is a little flat. I would also complain just a bit about the lighting on the singer's (Ben's) face. In addition to hiding his eyes, it almost makes him seem unenthusiastic. But, for the encore songs, they made it better (as if they realized they messed up for the first 40 minutes). I'm a little suprised the group, specifically the main guy (I've heard he is very particular) was OK with releasing this with the flaws I mentioned. I still enjoyed the performance, but it could have been oh so good.

This tape is wonderful, if you are anxious or stressed out. I ordered this tape for my high school son, who was needing a boost in social situations and school work, and it has helped a lot. He feels more confident and less self-conscious. I would recommend this tape. It has relaxing music and Dr. Schaub's voice is soothing!

4 out of 5 stars a fine effort in what may be the last kinks album.......2007-01-05

certainly not up to the level of their late 60's output up to the lola album which many consider the end of their classic period. this album rocks out with hard hitting riff based songs highlighting dave davie's underappreiated guitar skills. there are at least a couple of classic songs on this disc including scattered, and hatred (a duet). i remember this album being in my heavy rotation for several months after i bought it when it was released. i also remember hatred getting quite a bit of radio play. i know ray and dave have had some tough times recently with dave's stroke and ray getting stabbed in new orleans. i hope they get back together for at least one last hurrah. do they have another arthur or village green in them? i'm hoping they do.

4 out of 5 stars Still Cranky Still Cranking.......2005-12-21

And maybe this is where the Kinks finally ended. Ray has gone on to his solo work. Dave has plodded on with his. In hindsight, the Kinks albums have been mixed bags for so long that it is hard to say when the last "great" one was and a very subjective statement to make at that. But that misses the point. They persevered in a way that few (if any?) mid-60's British bands did. And this album is true to Ray and Dave's respective visions, sounds and stances. Not that necessarily what the people want, but who the two Davies brothers are as grown up rock and rollers. Maybe Dave's sound has gone louder and heavier with time. Maybe Ray is grumpier and more unhappy with time. True enough and true to themselves. Don't get this looking for Waterloo Sunset or even Come Dancing. This is where the Kinks ended up and it's not always pretty, but then they never were very pretty. Well, maybe Dave was when he was a young man with a loud guitar.

    1 out of 5 stars The end.......2005-12-13

And a terrible one at that. There are scant few half decent songs on this album, but even those are ruined by the godawful production. The Kinks really sunk into mediocrity during the 80's, with each reverb drenched cheese rock opus leaving you completely baffled. This album however, was the nail in the coffin. From the piss poor lyrics, to the cheap looking album art right down to the songs themselves, this is sad on every level. It makes you wonder what happened to the incredible band that used to exist some 30 odd years ago, but even more so, "WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING?"

2 out of 5 stars The Kinks' unfortunate ending.......2005-06-30

"Phobia," the final Kinks album, showcases a Ray Davies full of bitterness, anger, confusion, and resentment. His lyrical eruption of hostility is well matched by the most oppressive and claustrophobic music of the Kinks' career.

While it certainly wasn't their greatest strength, the Kinks had done tough, angry music well before ("Cliches of the World," "Give the People What They Want"). On "Phobia," though, the playing is lifeless, few of the melodies connect, most of the lyrics are petulant and juvenile-- and the long running time does not help matters. Sitting through 70+ bleak minutes of this nonsense to find the few highlights is a task I wouldn't recommend to anyone except the most devoted Kinks fan.

The highlights are there: "Still Searching," "Close to the Wire," "It's Alright," and "Surviving" are good, "Wall of Fire" is a passable opener, and "Don't" semi-successfully recycles the melody of the far-superior "Lost and Found." "Scattered" meets practically any other song Ray Davies has written-- a true Kink klassic amid the dross. On the other hand, you have many unlistenable distasters like "Phobia," "Hatred," "Drift Away," "Only a Dream," "Babies"... etc. The title track in particular is truly vile and probably the worst thing Ray Davies has ever put his name on.

All in all, "Phobia" is a pathetic ending to an amazing legacy. Kinks fanatics will want to track this down, of course, and for them "Scattered" will provide a rich reward. No one else should go near it.

4 out of 5 stars Prophetic and Bleak Vision of 21st Century Paranoia and Fear.......2005-02-03

Slandered by critics, dismissed as clangorous hard rock by others, this album actually finds the Kinks, 30 years into their career, at the top of their lyrical and musical craft. It's alternately haunting, angry and sad throughout, with tight playing and beautiful harmonies weaving it all together.

On "Phobia", Ray Davies' frail voice cries out like a beacon of humanity in a dark, pre-apocalyptic landscape. The weakest track is the first song proper, "Wall of Fire", but after that, it's pretty much one triumph after another. Highlights include "Still Searching", "Only a Dream" "Phobia" and, probably the BEST track here,(the last track on the CD)"Scattered".

If you're a fan of the "whimsical" or "quaint" Kinks, you may want to look elsewhere because this is a VERY dark album. I love the "whimsical" Kinks as well, but I always sensed the demons that lurked underneath the surface of Ray Davies' "misty waters", and so this album was not a total shock to me. However, the casual listener should be warned, on "Phobia", Ray's demons are let loose here and the result is a paranoid, almost claustrophobic CD.

This is an album of desperation... as the new century approached, Ray Davies sensed that idyllic parables could not fully express the spiritual/moral/mental crisis facing us as a species. So, he cranks up the amps on tracks like "Drift Away" and "Phobia" to make sure his message is heard. That is not to say that the CD is unmelodic... some of the Kinks'most attractive melodies to date can be found here.

I strongly suspect that the people who have panned this album either have not fully listened to it, (they heard one track not to their liking and cast it aside)or they are so set in what they think the Kinks should be, that they cannot handle anything different. (they want an album filled with 16 "waterloo sunset" re-writes) I believe that anyone who truly sits down and absorbs all 79 minutes of this album will be richly rewarded with a batch of evocative and powerful songs which only sound more powerful with each passing day.

3 out of 5 stars Benassi Bros.: Phobia.......2006-12-21

Well, when Benassi first came out it was a fantastic sound, hard hitting, synthesized, pounding dance floor anthems, which I think the club scene was waiting for. If this was his goal, he hit it head on. While the idea is great, all the songs are and have the same sound and logistics. The songs are great to get the crowd pumping build their energy up, before the headliner takes stage, and great sounds and feeling for after the headliner, but to me NOT a headliner sound. I have most of his music in my collection of dance trax that I listen to in my car, but to sit and listen to the whole cd repetitively, not my fav thing to do. After a while the pitches can get to one's ear, which is why I highly recommend these trax as good mixer's for dj's who want to pump up the crowd and get them grooving. Should you buy this? Eh, you wont miss out on anything if you don't, if you have never listened to Benassi Bros, Benny Benassi, sure pick this up, you will either really hate it or really like it.

This is an incredible album! There are not many rock CDs that simply blow me away because they are so good. This one did! My only complaint is that the censoring was done poorly, so I skip Topless (which is B-grade anway, so that was disappointing).

    1. Intro - 10/10: Really cool intro to the album, very short, dark, and moody.
    2. Diary Of Jane - 10/10: Awesome song! If I hadn't known about Breaking Benjamin before, this would have been the song that got me into them. Just like its predecessor on We Are Not Alone, So Cold, this is a very dark and dramatic song.
    3. Breath - 10/10: Another absolutely stunning song!
    4. You - 9/10: Another victory on Breaking Benjamin's march of success. Only problem is H-word in the chorus.
    5. Evil Angel - 10/10: Nice and heavy riffs acompany this song, another solid track.
    6. Until the End - 11/10: Awesome! One of Breaking Benjamin's better songs to date. This song runs longer than some of the others, and serves as this album's ballad which is pulled of very well. There is an F-word which is unsufficiently censored but easy mute.
    7. Dance With the Devil - 10/10: Breathtaking song! Ben's vocals get really emotional in this one. It makes me think "Breaking Benjamin could go gothic metal if they wanted, and they'd be great!"
    8. Topless - 4/10: This, sadly, is a B-grade song. And that, for Breaking Benjamin, is a huge disappointment. We Are Not Alone had two A-minuses, but no B's. This song is little more than a shell for Ben to yell "F--- me, f--- you!" in a lot. And the censoring is no help at all.
    9. Here We Are - 10/10: This song is a relief from Topless. Another ballad beautifully sung by Ben and is another on opf the highlights of this album.
    10. Unknown Soldier - 11/10: This may be the best on the album. To the best of my knowledge it doesn't have anything to do with Iraq (which is always a good thing). Awesome lyrics, awesome guitars, awesome song from and awesome group,
    11. Had Enough - 9/10: In this song the lyrics get really angry ("..have you had enough? You greedy litte b-----d, you will get what you deserve!"), still really good despite the misused b-----d in the chorus.
    12. You Fight Me - 10/10: Really good for the last track. Rounds off a solid release from Breaking Benjamin very well.
    13. Outro - 10/10: Like Intro, really interesting. Follows the tone of the album very well. Short, no lyrics.

This album comepletely blew me away. It is perhaps one of the greatest achievements of rock/alternative metal out there. A great compliment to BB's previous release "We Are Not Alone" (get the edited version, it is flawlessly edited).

    3 out of 5 stars It's all-right..........2006-02-27

    This Cd is OK...
The best track by far is "Feel Alive". If the CD included more tunes such as "Feel Alive", I would of given it 5 stars very easy. I still rate it in the high 3 stars area. I'm sure many would rate this CD in the 4's.

4 out of 5 stars Bastante bueno, pero no lo mejor.......2005-12-29

Encuentro bastante bien el LP, pero la única pega que le encuentro es que no llega al nivel de HYPNOTICA, pero aun así es un disco muy recomendable para los seguidores y no tan seguidores que quieran descubrir una nueva forma del TECHNO.

    1 out of 5 stars Hypnotica + Real Vocals = BS :( .......2005-12-17

I baught this cd looking for more of Hypnotica's badass dancefloor-crushing sound. Well, it seems that our beloved Benassi buddy decided that vocoded vocals weren't cool anymore. Bad idea, at least for those looking for Hypnotica II. I understand that he was trying to do evolve his sound, but unfortunately, he went in direction of a more stereotypical sound. I felt that Hypnotica was much more original, even though it was still a very "formulated" and repetitive album. Although this is a decent cd that will have you moving in no time, it is not a particularly memorable album--no single song really stands out. And quite frankly, the trancy female vocals are completely overdone, which gives the whole album a good helping of cheesy substance. All in all, for those who can't get enough of hypnotica, I suggest you look elsewhere--probably the single mixes. But for those who are actually into that "big beat trancy cheese" sound, this album will make you orgasmic.

    -Disappointed hypnotist

5 out of 5 stars The Benassi Bros Do It Again!.......2005-09-19

Ever since hearing "Satisfaction" I have been hooked onto the sound that Benny and Alle Benassi bring to the table. "Hypnotica" was one of their first major cds and it included that patent raw chainsaw sound that just keeps us coming back for more and keeps the dance floors jumpin.
They followed up with another great album in "Pumphonia", which introduced us to the wonderful vocals of both Sandy and Dhany. The beatiful Dhany showed off her beatiful voice in "Hit My Heart", while Sandy brought her powerful and stunning vocals in the hit "Illusion", which to this day is my favorite song. These 2 vocalists were a perfect addition to the Benassi sound, so it is no suprise that the Benassi Bros come at it again, this time with their new album "Phobia".
5 of the 12 songs on this album feature Dhany and 3 of the songs feature Sandy. Then there is the new additon to the Biz of Naan, and she is featured in 2 of the songs.
The hit single of this cd is "Every Single Day", a song which has a great beat mixed in with another strong performance from Dhany. This is a great one for the dance floor, and one of my favorite on the album.
Another one of my favorite songs on the album also features Dhany in "Make Me Feel". This is another song whose beat is sure to get you up and dancing.
Other strong performances by Dhany are in the songs "Run to Me" and "Somebody to Touch Me".
But don't count Sandy out! She leads in one of my favorite songs on the album, "CastAway", which has great lyrics along with a killer beat. "Light" and "Movin Up" are 2 other solid performances by Sandy on "Phobia".
Naan brings a new vocal sound to the Benassi Bros, and although she is not as great as Sandy or Dhany, she is still a great addition to the album, especailly in the song "Rocket in the Sky".
Overall, this is a wonderful album which integrates that addictive sound of Benny Benassi along with solid vocals. The previous cds we have seen from the Benassi Bros have not been so vocal-oriented, but they definetly hit a homerun with this album. A perfect mix of vocals and dance beats which can make for a sweaty night on the dance floor, or for on-to-go listening on your iPod.
Although this album does not contain a song that is one of my favorite Benassi songs, it is a very solid album overall, and a definite pickup if you love that Chainsaw sound the Benassi Bros always deliver.

(NOTE: Although the Amazon.com description states that this album includes the songs "Illusion" and "Turn Me Up", the Amazon version does not include these final 2 songs. There are 12 songs total on this album, not 14. I know this because I bought my cd from amazon.com, and I was suprised to see that there were only 12 songs on it, not the 14 like Amazon said. Therefore, if you buy this album, I also strongly suggest that you pick up the album "Pumphonia" by the Benassi Bros. as well, because "Pumphonia" includes some wonderful songs, including the song "Illusion" that was suppose to be on this album.)

4 out of 5 stars Crust Grind for enthusiasts.......2000-07-02

Wow, interesting stuff here. I, personally, love this kind of music. This is the first thing of Phobia's that I have ever heard, and I must say, it is very good. Very fast crust core with grind influenced riffs weave in and out of the songs on here, with the vocalist grunting and screaming his way through lyrics. The drums are phenomenol; while most music like this just pounds the listener with incessant double bass drumming, usually by a drum machine, the drums on this are used with precision and force. You here them, but they blend in with everything else, so it complements the whole song, just like it should. The only drawback to this cd is the length. Ten songs sounds good, but the total time is only seventeen minutes long. Mind you, that does not take anything away from this release; it only ends the fun quicker. This is definately for the listener who likes Benumb but wants their songs to be longer (the songs on this are about a minute and a half long), and for a depressed Brutal Truth fan who is upset that they broke up. Get this and feel the fear.
