Enriquez comes late in the freestyle game, but her album and singles point to directions the music might head for survival. (One sure strategy is the proliferation of the ballads included here.) The original freestyle beats have been altered, and the gap between these dance cuts and the dance-pop, hip-hop, and R&B recordings they are played next to on the radio is getting narrower all the time. "Do You Miss Me" is a jukebox revelation as well as a dance floor hit; such a perfect mix of traditional pop songwriting and floor-filling beats is sadly rare. A jeepy cover of Yaz's "Only You" gives more mileage to a song that won't die, but Enriquez really pushes the envelope on the ballad "Kailanman," which is performed in her native language, Tagalog. --John Sanchez

You want relaxing classical music that'll soothe your soul but won't lull you into sleep? Here's a double CD for you. The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The performances of most of these excerpts are top-notch--artists include Sir Neville Marriner, James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré and the Philadelphia Orchestra--and there's enough variety here for everyone. --Edward Garabedian

4 out of 5 stars Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

5 out of 5 stars Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

3 out of 5 stars Too much opera.......2007-01-10

If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.

The late director Stanley Kubrick's masterful pairing of image, song, and symphony has forever imbued an impossibly eclectic body of music with indelible psychic connotations that range from cosmic grandeur (2001's Also Sprach Zarathustra and "The Blue Danube") to cynical irony (A Clockwork Orange's use of Beethoven, Rossini, and Gene Kelly's "Singin' in the Rain"; Vera Lynn's warbling "We'll Meet Again" over Dr. Strangelove's climactic vision of apocalypse) and outright left-field loopiness (the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" from Full Metal Jacket); he may not have written a note of it, but it would somehow always be his. Judged against that history, Kubrick's final soundtrack, Eyes Wide Shut, may well be his most subtle and consistently surprising. Typically disparate, yet utterly evocative of the film's complexity of mood and psychosexual undercurrent, it initially glides effortlessly from old Kubrick favorite Ligeti (an excerpt and reprise of "Musica Ricercata II" rendered as a stark, minimalist dirge by pianist Dominic Harlan), through a Shostakovich waltz and Chris Isaak's edgy "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" to the schmaltzy ballroom sop of "When I Fall in Love." Crucially, Kubrick also commissioned original music (a rarity in his work since Strangelove) by English composer Jocelyn Pook, and her handful of compelling tracks range from Elgar-autumnal to hauntingly avant-garde, all of it becoming a piece of the director's strange, satisfying stew of classical, rock, jazz, and ostensibly banal pop. A soundtrack that evokes Kubrick's very essence: complex, satisfying, yet wholly enigmatic. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yet another facet of Kubrick's genius..........2006-09-11

...was his ability to pair song with image in just such a way as to create a subtle and evocative cinematic tension. 2001 and A Clockwork Orange were milestones in that respect, and Eyes Wide Shut keeps easy company with those great works. Listen to this music! The ebb and flow of the songs effortlessly mirrors the progression of the film, from reality to dreamscape and back again. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

3 out of 5 stars they forgot.........2004-11-03

they failed to include Rammstein's "Du Hast." This is an gnarly song with and awesome video relating to the movie... check it out at http://www.universalmotown.com/mediaplayers/rammstein/player.htm . Other than that, it okay.

5 out of 5 stars Eyes Wide Open For The EYES WIDE SHUT soundtrack.......2004-09-27

Among the most notable things of any Stanley Kubrick film from 1964's DOCTOR STRANGELOVE onward was the music he used in those films. Whether it was Richard Strauss' imposing "Also Sprach Zarathustra" in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, the Beethoven Ninth in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, or Bartok's "Music For Strings, Percussion, And Celesta" in THE SHINING, Kubrick always chose the music to set the mood and the scene, and frequently provide ironic counterpoint to the proceedings. The same holds true for the music he used in his final film, 1999's EYES WIDE SHUT.

In this typically ironic film of sexual infidelity, Kubrick utilized original instrumental pieces by English composer Jocelyn Pook, including "Masked Ball" (used to chilling effect in the orgy scene in the mansion) and the exotic "Migrations" to marvelous effect, and he also used a movement from Gyorgy Ligeti's piano piece "Musica Ricercata" in those scenes where Tom Cruise's character is being followed on the streets of New York. Several big-band standards, including "When I Fall In Love" and "Strangers In The Night", are also utilized. And for the film's official musical calling card, Kubrick chose the Second Waltz from the Jazz Suite No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. This waltz in C Minor gives the film its strange irony, much the same way Johann Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz" did for the early space scenes in "2001." The performance of the Shostakovich waltz by the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam under the direction of Riccardo Chailly is magnificent.

This soundtrack is a musical valedictory to one of Hollywood's most enigmatic, controversial, and influential film makers in history, and is well worth picking up for its mix of jazz, classical, and world music sounds.

1 out of 5 stars reversed song using a computer.......2004-09-02

The song is simply reversed by using computer software. Both the music and the voices are reversed.

A piece of art goes through a process of creation; it is not a simple click using a computer as in this case.

Anyone can reverse Mozart but the result is not an opera and author is just a person who plays with the computer.

While the songs in Christian-orthodox can truly inspire and generate positive effects the "reversed" song in the movie just gave me creeps.

I reversed the movie song using a software application and it is exactly a Romanian Christian-orthodox song and yes, I speak Romanian.

5 out of 5 stars For those who criticize music without understanding it.......2004-06-14

The Jocelyn Pook's Masked Ball song wasn't just a simple reverse of another existing song, not at all.

What do you obtain if you reverse the song used in the movie? You get a similar opera tunes with a rommanian greek-orthodox pray. Though, the music (not the voice) is now played backward.

So unless there was some big opera in rommanian churchs where all the musicians were on drugs, playing and reading their music sheets backward, this mean the only thing that has been "stolen" was the prayer's voice. The orchestral song has been made to put the reversed voice on. They didn't just "clic" on a reverse button and voila. Jocelyn Pook did write an orchestral score and only added a reversed voice on it. Now don't tell me that composing an orchestral song is easy as ripping a Beethoven track ala Puff Daddy.

5 out of 5 stars REMASTERED RELEASE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S FIRST HIT MUSICAL.......2007-04-18

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is Andrew Lloyd Webber's first staged musical work and his first staged collaboration with his best lyricist Tim Rice. The very first musical they wrote together, called `The likes of us', didn't reach the stage at that time and was put there for a single special performance in 2005, luckily, captured on CD and also available here at Amazon.

With `Joseph', it all began when in 1967 Lloyd Webber and his friend Rice were commissioned by the head of music at Colet Court School, London, to write a religious concert for the school choir. Joseph was first presented in 1968 and, after further performances at St Paul's Cathedral and the Roundhouse in London, and the Edinburgh Festival, opened in the West End in 1973. It wasn't much of a success, however, until Lloyd Webber bought back the rights to it in the early 90-is, reworked it and put on stage a very successful production that has been put in many other countries in the world and filmed for a special DVD.

The plot takes motives from a well known biblical Old Testament story of Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob, patriarch of Israel, and the coat of many colours that Jacob gave to Joseph as a sign that he is the special one among his sons. Joseph's older brothers became jealous and sold Joseph to be a slave in Egypt, telling their father that he's been killed by a passing goat. After being imprisoned by his equally jealous master, Joseph helps the pharaoh in solving his enigmatic dreams and becomes his first adviser who saves Egypt from the great famine. Back in Canaan, Joseph's brothers and father are starving and so the brothers go to Egypt where food is in abundance. Joseph recognizes them, but not vice versa. After he learns them a lesson because of their past behaviour, Joseph is reunited with his brothers and father in Egypt.

This is one of those Lloyd Webber shows that are aimed at everybody, the young and the old (just like `Cats' or `Starlight Express'. The songs are mostly pop and a merry note can be found in most of them. Also, this show is supposed to be fun, so there are numerous musical styles in it. For example, there is a country song that the brothers sing; at the other point they sing a French chanson with the French accents. The pharaoh sings like Elvis and one song is in a calypso tone. Overall, it's a nice whole of diverse songs and singing styles. Tim Rice has written his funniest lyrics, blending beautifully with the score. The most notable songs are "Any dream will do" and "Close every door" sung by Joseph and the big number "Jacob and sons" .

This London cast recording features Jason Donovan, the Australian pop singer as Joseph and Linzi Hateley as a female narrator. Donovan's voice isn't as strong as that of the American Joseph Donny Osmond, but his voice has the boyish charm that Osmond lacks. Hately's soprano follows the speedy tempo of her songs with ease. She hits all the high notes without problem and remains one of the best Joseph narrators to date. The children choirs add a special touch to the songs.

This is a remastered and improved release of the 1991 original CD. This means that it has resolved the main problem of the past, i.e. the bad sound. Now we hear everything with crystal clarity. The CD comes in a nice slipcase, with a separate libretto and a booklet with new production pictures. All this is a significant and welcome improvement.

The flashy production of Joseph can be seen at the DVD of the same name with Donny Osmond playing the lead. Joseph remains a part of Webber-Rice trilogy that cannot be overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful JOSEPH recording.......2007-03-05

Of the recordings of JOSEPH I've heard, I consider this to be the most wonderful and characterful recording of this Lord Lloyd-Webber musical. Osmond offers us all a rich portrayal of the eponymous dream-teller, filled with presence, but Donovan captures more subtleties of the character. Donovan conveys more wide-eyed and youthful innocence in his portrayal of Joseph and turns in a wonderful performance, capped by his renditions of the beguiling Any Dream Will Do and the pathos of Close Every Door. Donovan is well-partnered by Linzi Hateley as a charismatic and winning Narrator. Yes, I know you'll argue that the late-lamented Laurie Beechman virtually owns the role with her superior lung-power but Hateley engages the listener and makes the role her own. The superb line-up includes David Easter in an overripe performance of the Elvis-styled Pharaoh, and one can hear the little touches of humour he brings to his portrayal. The ensemble features a strong line-up of Brothers, and Nicolas Colicos as Reuben and Johnny Amboi as Judah make the most of their solos in One More Angel and in the Benjamin Calypso. Philip Cox gives a wonderful solo in Those Canaan Days (though Jeff Blumenkrantz is probably more memorable). To have it remastered makes it better than ever, especially with an improved libretto booklet despite some errors. Highly recommended to those who want their first recording of Joseph.

4 out of 5 stars SOME GREAT MUSIC!!!.......2007-01-14

This is a great CD if you are doing this musical for your school play. I liked this CD because it had some great music and had pictures of this musical, and a packet full of lyrics to the show. The guy who's palying joseph(Jason Donovan) had a stict londen voice which sounded good but it didn't sound as good as Donny Osmand or Michael Damian. Also to me, the people singing the Joseph megamix seemed not exciting and dead compared to the other CDs of Joseph. Still, if you would like the original Londen new cast of Joseph, buy it!

The guy who's palying joseph(Jason Donovan) had a stict londen voice which sounded good but it didn't sound as good as Donny Osmand or Michael Damian. Also to me, the people singing the Joseph Remix seemed not exciting and dead compared to the other CDs of Joseph. Still, if you would like the original Londen new cast of Joseph, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2007-03-24

I first came upon this CD when I was Music Director of a public radio station and I couldn't wait to get it on the air. The response from the audience (@ 53,000) was warm and grateful. This gal not only has a beautiful voice, but also the training to use that voice to its best advantage. There are no swoops and crutches here (like that singer... ah, what's her name... oh, yeah.. Sarah Brightman), just a pure, clear, steady (not a lot of vibrato) almost ethereal voice accompanied by a marvelous instinct for how and when to inject interpretation. The orchestration is great, too, not too much, not too little. Wow, talk about crossover! I hope Summer comes up with another CD soon. I've almost worn this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Who is the artist?.......2007-01-24

Based on the information provided by Amazon.com the featured artist on this CD is Pino Palladino. He is listed as a "performer," along with half a dozen other people. So what does he perform, I wonder? Mandolin? Tuba? The title of the CD is "Summer," so that must mean all the songs are about June, July and August. But the reviewers all talk about a woman named Summer, who is apparently a singer.
More lousy product information from Amazon.com. Nothing new, but worth whining about.

5 out of 5 stars Cross over music that works brilliantly.......2006-03-14

I heard Summer on a sampler cd I got for free from one of the local bookstores. I kept coming back to her song and liked it enough to order her entire cd from amazon. Great purchase to say the least. She moves effortlessly between classical and pop selections. She has a way of working within the song and not overextending - meaning she doesn't showboat. Don't expect any american idol grandstanding at any time. What you get is straight up professional singing from a classicaly trained vocalist. It doesn't get boring thanks to a great mix of songs. The treatment of Sting's 'fragile' is especially nice. Not an essential cd but I still give it 5 stars because it's practically flawless.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD and Good Voice.......2005-04-27

Summer has a very nice sounding voice and her choice of songs is very good. Her Rich sounding voice is just perfect for the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Listen.......2005-02-28

Listen and I'm sure you will buy a copy even if you already have the songs she sings. I did. The next vocal queen.

5 out of 5 stars Eroica Trio, Classical Music Angels.......2006-03-19

The album, "Best of Eroica," demonstrates with heavenly beauty this group's musicality, technical skill, and deep understanding of the music they've chosen. This album is a "must" for anyone who enjoys piano trios and wants to relax surrounded by transporting sound.

4 out of 5 stars Spirited style in a generous album--4.5 stars.......2005-12-09

This generous album (nearly 75 minutes long) contains 14 selections from the award-winning trio's other CDs. Thus, the range of music is quite wide. The artists (Erika Nickrenz--piano, Adela Pena-violin, & Sara Sant'Ambrogio--cello), though accomplished soloists, meld their playing beautifully. The Albinoni here is the shortest of the four versions in my collection--played with spirit. The Vivaldi demonstrates their virtuosity. I think the viola shines in Brahm's lullaby. The Piazzolla pieces remind me of the concert at which I heard them play; it was spectacular. Still, a few of the pieces are not particularly to my liking--though they are played well. Also, as a baroque fan I'd like to see some Telemann, Bach, &/or Handel. Most of the pieces are very lively--not too relaxing or useful for meditation--but great for listening. But then, as a trio, they are chamber music oriented. Still, IMHO the order of pieces on the album could be improved. Overall, it's a very fine album though I like the baroque one better--just a personal preference, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying.......2005-08-26

I saw them live a few years ago, and was captivated by their group chemistry and technical precision. One of my favorite modern classical groups.

5 out of 5 stars Better still, buy the other CDs.......2005-05-27

As a compilation, the ladies have selected a few cuts from each of their 6 CDs to give any listener new to the Eroica Trio--named in homage to Beethoven's 3d "Eroica" Symphony, not the crass misreading offered by a previous reviewer--a singular treat, and thus serves as a good first disk. But it is a sampler of sorts, and while I think that all of their CDs are good and worth your attention, they do range in focus and style from tangos to the Baroque, to healthy doses of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach--so suit to taste. The 5 star rating I give this CD is really for the larger body of work that this disk draws from.

5 out of 5 stars I was prepared to have a mean rant, however.............2005-05-07

These ladies can play!! The chemistry and emotional fire is what makes up for the corny "Erotica Trio" title, but I ask you-what would you do as a graduating classical musician to get noticed today? Our cities are riddled with out-of-work and under appreciated young classical musicians, and it's partly our fault for not telling everyone about this great art form.
One day we may see a renissance in the musical arts where knowing the works & composers of the classical cannon won't be so rare- just imagine.

many people say andreas scholl has a non-expressice voice for opera and that the beauty of his voice gets him by. well after listening to the choice of his best i argue that. his "dove sei" is beautiful as well as his "ombra mai fu," a peace he made his own.over all a very nice selection. a must for all andreas scholl fans and those who enjoy a musical diversity.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-01-19

While watching the movie on HBO, I was entranced by the musical score and ordered both the video and the soundtrack. Very evocative. It has become one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful vocals numbers.......2007-01-16

The solo voice pieces by Andreas Scholl and Hayley Westenra are excellent. Selection #15, "Bridal Ballad", is the one that stands out. The CD price is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite film score of all time.......2006-10-09

I am really picky about film scores. A lot of film scores I hear are loud, bombastic, and over the top. My favorite film score of all time has to be Jocelyn Pook's compositions for the 2004 film adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". Her orchestral compositions really reflects the time period the film takes place in. For me, the gorgeous film score was what made the film so engaging for me. The meldoies were never loud or bombastic like you would hear in John Williams' or Hans Zimmer's work. Andreas Scholl's operatic vocals added a nice touch to Jocelyn Pook's music. Originally I thought Andreas was a she and not a he. His voice is very high for a man and I mean that in a positive way. My favorite track on the album is "Bridal Ballad" with Hayley Westenra. This was my first introduction to Hayley. I must say I was quite impressed. She has a lovely voice that is rarely heard in singers around her age. I wish Britney Spears could sing like that, much less sing like a human and less like a chipmunk.Anyways, I really feel that Jocelyn captured the Shakespeare era that the story was takes place with her music. I hope to hear more from her in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious, elegant and wistfully romantic.......2006-09-29

Composer Jocelyn Pook bridges the gap between Renaissance and modern day to create a soundtrack for Michael Radford's film version of the Shakespeare play "The Merchant of Venice." Her moody, delicate score is decidedly mellow, evoking gentility and laced with quiet longing. Real Renaissance dances intertwine with lilting original compositions played by chamber orchestra and harp, with period texts mixed in too, lightly sung in countertenor and boychoir voices. Near Eastern motifs also wend their way through the music in the form of Hebrew songs, sultry oud (lute) and shimmering kanun (an Arabic psaltery). The result is a pensive, winsome, consistently elegant soundscape that is just lovely to listen to. Featured musicians include Pook herself on viola, Pamela Thorby playing a delightfully pure, straigh-toned recorder, Siobhan Armstrong on harp, Harvey Brough on psaltery, Elizabeth Kenny on theorbo (archlute), Jon Banks on qanun, and singers Andreas Scholl, Hayley Westenra, Ben Crawley, Uri Yehuda and Robert Prizeman's Libera boy's choir. Compare with Pook's other albums, such as "Untold Things" and "Flood." Try also the work of composer Anne Dudley, and any of the real Renaissance music put out by the Dorian label.

5 out of 5 stars ATMOSPHERIC AND SUGGESTIVE.......2006-07-07

I saw this CD in a musical store before the movie came to town. I've read and taught Shakespeare so I was acquainted about the dramatic material I had in my hands so, finally, I decided to buy it, expecting to find a good score appropiate to the intense shakesperean story. What I found was an excellent score, beautifully orchestrated, and intensevely suggestive. It really captures the atmosphere of the movie which - let's say it here - counts with one of the finest works by Al Pacino. Highly recommended. IMPORTANT NOTICE: the CD cover here in Chile does not correspond to the one displayed in Amazon (Producers came up with two different covern designs, I guess). Yet, both are quite attractive and the music is exactly the same.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-02-14

I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10

I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11

I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

On Flood, we join British composer Jocelyn Pook as witnesses to a catastrophe, transfixed by its totality, muted by its incalculable human toll. Pook's faintly beautiful, profoundly sad music is all that hovers above her ashen, apocalyptic landscapes, one we dare not survey too long, it seems, lest we suffer the fate of Lot's wife. Pook's ability to summon such imagery--via patient, edgy, atmospheric use of voice, strings (viola, violins, cello), and electronics--is what led film director Stanley Kubrick to invite Pook's participation on the original soundtrack for Eyes Wide Shut. First released in 1997, Flood contains two selections that were modified for the film: "Migrations," a hypnotic work with Middle Eastern textures and Persian vocalists, heard during the film's orgy scenes, and "Masked Ball," where Pook achieves an ominous effect by playing the chants of Romanian priests in reverse. The album's most arresting work may be "Oppenheimer," an evolving, multicultural choral requiem prefaced by a reflection on Hindu scripture spoken Robert Oppenheimer, an inventor of the atomic bomb. It is affectingly reprised in the album's haunting final track. A bleak and somber work, and an utterly absorbing one. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars Mysterious, haunting and delicately dark.......2006-09-29

"Flood" contains the music written or rewritten by Jocelyn Pook at the request of Stanley Kubrick, to serve as the soundtrack for his film "Eyes Wide Shut." Pook's inspiration for the compositions (originally conceived as "Deluge," music for a Canadian dance company) was "linking up the two millenia - the year 1000 and the year 2000 - by means of myth, legends and fears about the end of the world." She "wanted the music to embody ideas and influences from both these ages, and to draw upon cultures as diverse as Hinduism and Christianity, Judaism and Islam." The result is a broody, eclectic and at times minimalistic fusion of medieval chant motifs, lush modern harmonies, childlike lead vocals, traditionally nasal world folksongs and chamber-style strings that alternately drone menacingly and pulse like heartbeats. It's an interesting and effective mood, though a bit laid back for a depiction of the end of the world. But to listen straight through can get a little monotonous sometimes, so "Flood" might be one of those albums whose tracks are better appreciated when mixed up with others. That said, "Blow Thy Wind" is a gently winning song that is engagingly developed, and the drum-laden "Goya's Nightmare" also stands out from the rest. Try Pook's other work, like "Untold Things" and the soundtrack for "The Merchant of Venice," and compare with James Newton's haunting, emotive soundtrack for M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village," and also (speaking of the end of the world) Richard Gibbs's laid back, minimalistic soundtrack for the "Battlestar Galactica" miniseries.

5 out of 5 stars Discovery!.......2002-04-11

What a relief to discover such a unique talent! I did not know that such a significant composer exists at our time. And it is a young woman! How come that only through the movie I could make my discovery! I was not impressed by the movie at all, except for the music - and that is how I discovered this refreshingly strong composer. Her music should be everywhere. I will make sure that all my friends who are mostly artists, writers and musician will learn everything they can about Mrs. Jocelyn Pook and her amazing, AMAZINGLY ORIGINAL, POWERFUL, INCOMPARABLE MUSIC!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2000-07-19

I had heard some of the RA samples on amazon.com, and I was blown away by how rich the music was, even on a bad quality clip. It's nothing compared to listening to the CD in a massive stereo. The music resonates through your ears and fills your soul with this energy that just overflows through you. The most powerful song, I think, is "Blow The Wind/Pie Jesu". It amazes me how two different songs can blend and dance together through your mind. Especially around 1:15 when the music blends with "Dona Eis Requiem". "Masked Ball", used in EYES WIDE SHUT, is the extended version, and is twice as long as the one on the EWS soundtrack. At first, the two minutes or so of ominous music gets tedious, but then the tenor voice comes in and the organ/keyboard cresendos to a powerful backing for the singers. This is repeated, forming the length of the song. "Oppenheimer" and "Flood" are also excpetional. Jocelyn Pook weaves here, a dreamscape of rich music that blows you away with its deiversity and melencholy beauty. A winner!

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Rich Music.......2000-03-05

This CD is an almost religous experience. Ms. Pook, besides being a phenomenol musician and vocalist, is a trailblazing pioneer in her genre (which is basically just her). For an excursion to a future that is still steeped in the past check out this disk.

5 out of 5 stars Superb mix of global non secular musical denominations.......1999-10-29

I first heard Ms. Pook's music on the "Eyes Wide Shut" soundtrack (the masquerade ball scene) and was blown away; if ever there was a necessity for music to permeate a scene in a film this was it. She incorporates a blend of the traditional songs from faiths across continents and mixes them, for lack of a better comparison than similar to your quintessential raver d.j. (though these are better and definitively more original :) "Oppenheimer" is my favorite, and if you let the last track run for a few minutes a portion of the song will play once more. I can't wait to hear more of her stuff - these hymns are awesome.

5 out of 5 stars REMEMBER THE PARADISE GARAGE NYC.......2007-04-06

I remember just graduating from high school in 1988 and my sister had just moved out on her own in my parent's 2 family house in Queens,New York. She advised me that anytime I wanted to go to the Paradise Garage, the premiere house nightclub.......just tell mommy and daddy your staying over at my house for the weekend. Needless to say........IT WAS ON AND POPPIN!!!! The cut from Ms. Brown that would get the party started was definitely AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH. Personally, and surely I'm not trying to downgrade Diana Ross by any means, but when you hear Ms. Brown's roaring rendition of this Motown classic, I don't think you will be wanting to hear the orginal anytime soon. Ms. Brown had a going to church alto that made you want to say amen and run to the dance floor. SOMEBODY ELSE'S GUY is the hit that everyone knows her for but cut, CAUGHT UP(IN A ONE NIGHT LOVE AFFAIR)was affectionately my favorite. I clearly rememember going to a street festival somewhere downtown NYC and AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN came on and I swear it turned into something out of the movie FAME, with everybody just dancing so free and happy! I will never forget that as long as I live. Kudos to amazon for having this classic.

5 out of 5 stars I Love it. Where can I find the instrumental track?.......1999-09-25

I remember when this little number was released. I think everybody on my block, and in my family loved it right away and went out and bought it. The artist, Jocelyn Brown is sensational--her voice and style of delivery simply great. The music arrangement is absolutely great. The lyrics are well put together in a totally direct way--no mistake about the concept of the message. I have this number in my collection of many and I listen to it more than any of the rest. I would love to have also the instrumental version. PLEASE HELP ME TO FIND IT. Thank you in advance. Barbara (BJ)
