As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.Customer Reviews:

Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.
Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This 1972 collection set the bar it took years for Raitt to clear again. Moving easily between sensitive singer-songwriter and bawdy blues-mama roles, the blazing redhead proved she was a talent to watch on several fronts. Raitt demonstrated a keen instinct for finding suitable material, adopting Jackson Browne's "Under the Falling Sky" and Eric Kaz's "Love Has No Pride" as if she'd penned them herself. The honeyed vocals and slashing slide guitar heard on Give It Up identified Raitt instantly to anyone who encountered this album. Unfortunately, it would be nearly two decades before many did catch on to her appeal. --Steve StolderAlbum Description

I saw her a few months after this album came out, at the Cellar Door in D.C., on stage with only Freebo the bass player (John Prine was the opening act). Fantastic night - those were the days.
Classic blues-rock album.......2005-01-24
The covers include the R+B classics I know (Barbara George) and If you gotta make a fool of somebody (originally recorded by James Ray, it became a major UK hit for Freddie and the dreamers, though I suspect that it was James Ray's version that inspired Bonnie's outstanding cover). Other great covers include Love has no pride (an Eric Kaz song that I first discovered on Linda Ronstadt's album, Don't cry now) and Under the falling sky (Jackson Browne).
This album, along with Bonnie's other early albums, did not receive the attention it deserved at the time, but as her reputation has grown, more people are learning just how good Bonnie's music really is - all of it, but especially those early albums.

Album Description
Kona, Hawaii: think lush natural landscapes, divine inspiration and kids with nothing to do except find the next rage and invent slicker ways to pick up girls. Add metal and rock/dancehall influences to Hawaiian spirit, humor and ridiculously good looks - and you got Pepper. "Give'n It" was originally recorded in late 1997 in the only studio that existed in Kona at the time. Pepper caught the attention of fans from all corners, particularly Volcom Entertainment. After packing up all their belongings and heading to California, Pepper scored dates with established artists like Born Jamericans, Shaggy, Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, Pato Banton & Secret Hate, were featured on XBox and Transworld Surf & Snow games, and played an entire run on the Warped Tour 2001, paying their dues by building the stage and pumping their signature Kona-dub-rock into the hearts of fans from state to state. It is edgy, lush, rocking, melodic, innovative, heart-grabbing and a good ride. It is Pepper.Customer Reviews:

A few notches above the average for No Limit.......2007-01-16
"You Got It (II)" has those really whiny synths that Dr. Dre used to great effect on "Efil4Zaggin". Now, BBTP isn't Dre by any stretch, but they manage to conjure the same hazy menace. In fact, the thickness of Slim's accent, the fact that most of us Yanks won't be able to catch every word he says, makes it all the more unsettling. Another standout is "Anything", with Slim and Mia X trading sex rhymes over a dark bass-and-synth driven beat. "Law Brekaz" is downright claustrophobic, and Slim's paranoia about being robbed or killed is so palpable it could ride shogtun with "My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me". Sadly, paranoia is occasionally justified, as Slim was murdered just a few years after "Give It To 'Em Raw" dropped. It's hard to keep that out of your mind even on the lighter tracks, like the Parliament derivative "No Limit Party". No less than sixteen emcees (and that's being kind to some of these cats) tear through eight bars apiece in about five minutes. Works perfect as a closer.
There is a lot of midi-sounding junk. Most of the lyrics outside the highlighted tracks tend toward the "streets are dangerous/stay strapped/dealing/using/I'm negative because of my screwed up childhood" variety. Public Enemy or Main Source this isn't. However, I'd gladly take negative mental baggage over mindless boasting of material goods (Baby, I'm looking atchoo) any day. $20 bucks for a used disc is ridiculous, so try rooting around at your friendly neighborhood flea markets. RIP Soulja Slim. Thanks for the music.

First time collection on CD! This Jane Froman package features the 1952 Broadway Revival of "Pal Joey" (where Jane provided the lead vocals for Vivienne Segal) along with the original soundtrack to "With Song in My Heart" - the 1952 film starring Susan Hayward in the life story of Jane Forman (Jane provided vocals for the film). The classic Rodgers & Hart "Pal Joey" album also features a standout performance from a young Elaine Stritch singing her showstopper "Zip." Digitally Remastered.Customer Reviews:

A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART
Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.
PAL JOEY
Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.
In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.
"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30
another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".
The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.
Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.
The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.
The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".
A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

Get It & Want More!.......2007-05-17
Give It To Me featuring Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake Radio Edit (3:33) has a totally diverse cultural mixture of elements. Nelly's vocals shine as she begins her singing portraying much confidence, sex appeal, and dance invitational lyrics. Timbaland steps in to a nice deeper sounding vocal pitch adding spice, as the drums, bass-lines, and beats just flow nicely. And when you think it can't get better Justin sings his part adding a nice cute higher sounding pitch to blend all three styles. Thus creating a joining of the cultures in some unique mysterious way quite fascinating!
Give It To Me Instrumental (3:55) is the same, as the previous track but has no sung vocals. For fans of singing then this may be to your liking. Despite the lack of vocals, the melody is never tiring, monotonous or boring for those who enjoy drums, and vast dance sounds.
Come Around featuring M.I.A. (3:57) has to be my favorite track for the diverse cultural sound. The dance elements are fresh, and the production is quite unique. Timbaland challenges his object of affection, adding electronica vocals, echoes and new era techno effects.

for beginners.......2005-10-10
give it back is their 5th album, and is probably the most mentioned and played in the recent film "dig!". Personally, my favortite bjm album is take it from the man, but i'm reviewing give it back because i think it's the easiest accessable record of theres for new listeners. Give it back doesn't have much character to it like the other albums do, instead it's got a little bit of everything. Giving the listener the whole "brian jonestown experience"
The album kicks off with super sonic, with it's infinite number of sounds, i feel like i just get buried in the twinging sounds of the sitars. After super sonic, you get "this is why you love me" a sweet song by anton. Then after that's satellite, and awesome song. Then there's malela, an eerie campfire story almost, and a great song. Then we gt something totally different from malela as salaam kicks in, a very indian like song, with sitars and who-knows-what-other-instruments. This is a great soothing instrumental. Then comes "whoever you are", a much more built song, and almost more pop sounding with a much more recognizable sound. This is a great, mystifying song. Then there's sue, which is 8 and a half minutes long, but its still a good song, not the best though. Just a "massive concussion of rock and roll" i'd say...heh.
Then we have "you better love me before i am gone" which is probably the sweetest song on the record, featuring beautiful female vocals (miranda richards?). Then we have the oh so famous "not if you were the last dandy on earth". Awesome rock and roll song, followed by number one hit jam, another great bjm signature song. Then there's servo, my favorite track on this record. Your ears just get lost in it's awesome sound. THen to end it off, you have "the devil may care (mom and dad don't). A BEAUTIFUL and saddening song (this is in dig, when anton's recording by himself. best scene in the movie, my friends.). Then there's "their satanic majesties request" which uh... i dunno, go buy the album and see for yourself.

my favorite BJM.......2005-06-16
I especially love 'Whoever You Are' for it's Beatle-tinged ("let me take you down"), psychedelic gvoove. It never ceases to amaze me.
If you're like me and was "turned on" to The BJM by Dig!, you will have to have this. Just buy them all like I did. I appreciate the motive(s) to put them up on the web for free but I just had to have the actual CD's. Take that RIAA.
I Pray to Buddha, to Allah, and BJM.......2005-05-17

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Gosford Park Sound Track.......2007-03-30
Better than the movie.......2004-12-08
Why is this music so compelling and winning?
First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.
Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.
My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.
I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.
I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08
However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.
My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??
Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.
Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23
Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.
I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.
Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.
