Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08

The tale of a mother who poses as her son's estranged father in letters, yet eventually has to enlist a stranger to play the role, director Shona Auerbach's intimate indie became a film festival perennial. Given the movie's tearjerker tendencies, its musical score becomes an even more crucial component of its deft, if relatively non-manipulative dramaturgy. Young composer Alex Heffes more than rises to the occasion, providing a delicate score fueled by spare, elegant piano and emotionally-longing string arrangements. Heffes work here mines the same intimately scaled, soulfully resonant vein as Rachel Portman's Oscar-nominated music for Lasse Hallstrom's Ciderhouse Rules and Chocolat, a skillful musical tack that's openly emotional, yet seldom cloying. The contributions of modern rockers Clarksville (the buoyant "Everyone Will Have Their Day" and more intimate ballad "Reprise") and singer-songwriters Obi and Jesse Harris organically mesh with Heffes' score in a way that's all to rare in an era where pop songs often contribute little more than marketing shuck to film projects. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

The last release from the Roger Waters-led incarnation of the band, The Final Cut is easily the most darkly provocative entry in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. Many fans and critics tend to think of it as a Roger Waters solo album, though it certainly hangs together much better than The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking or Radio K.A.O.S.. Others view it as a sequel to The Wall--and indeed, The Final Cut tackles many of the same issues (the futility of war, the innate powerlessness of the individual in modern society), albeit with twice the bile and intensity. The anger that fires songs like "The Hero's Return" and "Not Now John" is certainly legitimate, and Michael Kamen's orchestral arrangements are absolutely stunning, but the entire listening experience can be pretty draining. On the other hand, if you found The Wall to be too soft or commercial, The Final Cut is definitely the record for you. --Dan EpsteinAlbum Description
1994 U.K. reissue of their top 10 1983 album on a full colorpicture disc. 12 tracks, including 'The Post War Dream', 'The Gunner's Dream' and 'Not Now John'.Customer Reviews:
Frighteningly applicable..........2007-07-28
I credit Pink Floyd for inspiring me to get into human rights law. Amazing what an album on a considerably depressing topic can inspire for others!
Depressing.......2006-03-16
Yes the music is nice - it is a nice piece of work, and I certinaly can't deny that Roger was a fantastic songwriter and musician - but it is, quite literally, a solo piece of work by Roger, with the rest of the members from Pink Floyd being backing instruments mainly, and I think that is an insult to the Pink Floyd name.
Pink Floyd are a BAND. They are suppoed to write together (or as much together as they can stand of each other), play together, sing together and whatnot. If Roger Waters wanted to produce a solo piece of music on his own, then that would have been fine, but to do it under the Pink Floyd name... I do believe it is an insult. If the whole of Pink Floyd were more engaged in the album (and the four members had been in the band) then it wouldn't be half as bad.
This album was also certinaly different from the others, with the opening lines being, "Jesus Jesus what's it all about..." It's just not Pink Floyd at all. And a whole album based on the War?
Classic examples of Pink Floyd's Greatest Songs would be "Animals" and "Dark Side of the Moon." - I wouldn't recommend this one to a new, curious Pink Floydian.
The Final Cut - Easily one of the best!.......2006-03-04
As for the critics who say Waters was a tyrant, the whole band wasn't present on the album, ect.... none of that matters. What matters on this album, and Every album that matters, is this... does it move you? In a positive way? I would have to say yes, it does. Easily in my top ten list of all time, of which Floyd has three spots.... The Wall, The Final Cut, and Dark Side Of The Moon.
Roger Waters' dark goodbye to Pink Floyd .......2005-11-29
The Final Cut album was mainly the work of Roger Waters(bass player/vocals) with muted contribution from drummer Nick Mason and guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour. Keyboardist Rick Wright was kicked out the band during The Wall sessions. The Final Cut was supposed to be the soundtrack to The Wall movie but instead, The Final Cut presents a gloomy vivid portrait of a morally crumbling post-WWII/Falklands War era England.
The album is fixated on the second World War and what the personal and societal sacrifices of that conflict meant to Great Britain in 1982/1983.
"What have we done to England?/Should we shout, should we scream/'What happened to the post war dream?'" lyricist, Roger Waters asks on the opening The Post War Dream. Throughout the album, Mr. Waters (whom lost his father in World War II) explores that inquiry. Your Possible Pasts are taking shots at Thatcher and Reagan. The main character in this album is the teacher from The Wall whom was disappointed in the generation they preserved (One of the Few and The Hero's Return), trying to keep a fellow serviceman's dream alive(The Gunner's Dream), pursued by ghosts (Paranoid Eyes).
Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert is great and is followed by my favorite song on the album The Fletcher Memorial Home which depicts Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan as overgrown infants and tyrants. Southampton Dock was about Thatcher waving goodbye to the men. The title cut is a great song too. Not Now John is a superb rocker and the only Gilmour vocal on the record(him and Roger fought like mad and David took his name off the credits but still got paid to produce the album. The haunting Two Suns in the Sunset closes the album. Andy Newmark plays drums on this track as Nick was forced out as well.
By the time The Final Cut was finished, Pink Floyd broke up.
The album was nevertheless another Top 10 album for the band in the US hitting #6 and selling 2 million in the US but was a flop compared to its predecessor. I was one of those who bought this album on tape the year it came out and have gone through countless copies of this album, especially the various remasters of this album).
Nevertheless, it is highly recommended!
The very best of Roger Waters.......2005-10-05

Shortly before Kiss embarked on its nostalgic, highly profitable reunion tour of 1996, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley seemed to be planning a more contemporary route to world domination. Their album Carnival of Souls was recorded in 1995, prior to original Kissmen Ace Frehley's and Peter Criss's reentry into the band, and it sounds more like Seattle revisited than "Detroit Rock City." The album's lumbering rhythms, and ex-guitarist Bruce Kulick's quavering string bends, are reminiscent of Badmotorfinger-era Soundgarden, and Stanley's vocals wobble and wail, stopping just short of rocketing into a high-pitch falsetto. As derivative as it is, however, Carnival of Souls is pretty gripping. Sure, the ballads are clunkers, but many of the other tracks are undeniably compelling, alternating between atmospheric verses and bracing, teen-spirited choruses. It's just a shame that Kiss's renewed emphasis on recapturing the box office with 20-year-old material will probably prevent the band from growing and evolving even further. --Jon WiederhornCustomer Reviews:

Flawed Track Inclusion.......2007-07-29
Quite good, but not a stellar "Trek".......2007-05-18
IN GENERAL: For the purist looking for a "best of" compilation taken from the original soundtracks take note: this isn't that product. Rather, these are reproductions by Nic Raine conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic. That said, this is a quality group, and the general sound is professional and comes off quite well (for the most part..I'll mention a few exceptions). It is superior to the other releases I have heard from the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
SELECTION: The biggest advantage here is variety of sources. The Trek feature films are all represented here, as well as the various series (except for the last one, "Enterprise"). The thouroughness seems to match or excel the oher Star Trek Compilation CDs that have been released. There are a few other offbeat additions..notably a four minute suite from the videogame Star Fleet Academy. Personally, I found this bland track to be four minutes of wasted disk space. The original series has many memorable moments (listen to the Amok Time/The Doomsday Machine soundtrack) which would be be more exciting and also a better fit on this album.
Jerry Goldsmith's standard Star Trek March is heard far too often on these 2 CDs. The march itself is terrific, but it has been used so much it has become the franchise's major theme and the album's producers rely on it by representing many movies by their "End Titles". Unfortunately, Goldsmith's end titles consistently use a three-section approach: two sections of the "standard" Star Trek March sandwich a middle section of music that is unique for that particular film. This is OK if you are listening to a single movie's soundtrack, but for a compilation album, the fourth or fifth time you hear the march, it is too much. It would have been a better idea to cut a few "End Title" performances in favor of other selections from the films' soundtracks.
PERFORMANCE QUALITY: For the most part it is very good and captures the spirit of the original soundtracks. Selections from Horner's scores for the second and third films stand out as particularly well done. The last movie, "Nemesis" also has a terrifically arranged suite, and most of the movie soundtrack reproductions are very good quality. The only exception is from "Klingon Attack" in which the awesome bass of the "blaster-beam" from the original cannot be matched by the comparatively hollow synthesized atempt here.
PERSONAL GRIPE: the inclusion of sound effects. Every so often a special effect like "Warp Drive" or "Dogfight in Space" pops up between tracks. This by itself would be extremely cheesy. Add to this that these are not the actual sound effects from the TV shows or movies and the cheesiness levels reach a level I think only a Wisconsin resident could appreciate. Sci Fi music (and Star Trek in particular) seems to inspire some labels to add special effects inclusions like this. Who knows why.

Best ST recording in the Alpha Quadrant.......2007-01-10
Opera is missing.
I must disagree.......2005-07-17
This collection has music you will not find anywhere else. The Tasha's Farewell track is beautiful and the only other place its avialable is the Edel "Best of Science Fiction" compilation from 1993, and while that was recorded by the same orchestra, it was with a different conductor, and comparing the two, you can tell that Nic Raine was more successful with Prague than William Motzing was. That said Edel release is also more than $30 here on amazon. Also this release is in HDCD Dolby which is a plus. There's also two cues from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; one of them is on The Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special, the other is not on any other album. In addition, there is music from Ron Jones "Starfleet Academy" video game which is pretty cool to listen to, and not availble anywhere else that I know of. Finally, Jerry Goldsmith's main theme can get boring after a while, I mean, its repetitive that it is in all the end credit suites, it would have been nice for Insurrection to have maybe an action cue instead of the end credits suite...And Nic Raine, did just that, only for Star Trek: Nemesis. Instead of the tradition end credit suite, Mr. Raine arranged a professional suite with the main Nemesis theme, some action cues, as well as the Goldsmith Star Trek march, and it is a wonderful 8 minutes. If you already have the 3 space and beyond albums, the Star Trek Nemesis track as well as Birds of Prey Decloaking from Star Trek III are the only new tracks on this CD.
This is a must-buy for fans of star trek in general, and hardcore star trek fans should buy this album for the aforementioned cues that aren't available anywhere else.

Say it ain't so Aaron, this is not the final album from you?.......2006-05-02
His niche are his slow jams. This man can simply sing the slow jams and you will find yourself hitting repeat on songs like Sorry, Still Here, All I Think About you. If you are an Aaron fan then you must have this CD in your collection. It is worth the money. Lack of radio play may have also hurt his career as well, not to mention his personal issues. When it comes to the up-tempo tracks I always felt he needed better production, if he had a stand out up-tempo track that could have garnered him some radio play, I'm sure that would have helped him tremendously. I will admit when I saw some of the tracks had some hip hop artist I never heard of, I got very concerned. On his second album he had this one track I was really getting into(track 6) and then the rapper came on and ruined the whole song for me. Nothing worse, then a song being ruined by a horrible hip hop artist. I will say KanasCali had a decent flow and the songs are simply okay. I hope Aaron will reconsider and release one more album.

Sad, but what can we do..........2003-07-31
This last album is just a tribute to their career, nothing new or fresh. So I just give it 5 stars as a tribute to the band whose music means a lot to me.
