Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars was on my wish list, bought it in a Virgin Megastore.......2007-06-23

It's great music with great artists. Notable tracks that I didn't have on CD yet were 'cafe de flore by dr. rockit', 'all that you give by the cinematic orchestra'

And notable artists: chet baker, st germain, i:cube, stephane pompougnac, chateau flight (notable song not on this cd is "camping jazz" of which I know the name), gotan project, the herbaliser, slow train, mr scruff, mark rae (from Rae & Christian), Aim, jazzanova, de-phazz, beanfield, infracom, truby trio, marschmellows, boozoo bajou, mo horizons, alphawezen, thievery corporation.

These are the names that I know best, and to see that many on one compilation is a blessing.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting mix of music.......2007-06-08

I bought this after hearing some of the songs playing in a restaurant and asking what they where playing. Decided to take a chance with it and was not disappointed. In general, the songs are interesting, some even fun. The mix includes a number of styles and doesn't get bogged down by one type. There is a song or two that I skip over when it comes up, but in general I can let each of the discs play and like most of what I hear.

However, don't bother getting the second volume, it's no good.

3 out of 5 stars it's a solid collection for lovers of the genre..........2005-11-30

Nowadays when I venture out to buy an actual CD, it's usually a box compilation of some sort. iTunes has become a godsend; but I still get excited at discovering a promising CD on the rack and just taking a chance on what's there. For me it's part of the great experience of being a music lover.

If you get into the more relaxed side of club music and electronica--nujazz, downtempo, whatever--this collection will grow on you, one track at a time. In typical 'box set' fashion, don't expect to love everthing here; but there are enough tight little grooves to make it worth the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars 4 for the price of 1.......2005-09-08

There are places you can get the set for $24. If BarGrooves and jazz mix is your bag, City Lounge will fill the void. However, if you are looking for dance tunes, rhythm, beats that will get people up on the floor, this isn't it. I suppose the music would work best as background music (think KMart in a Bar Environment) while people are flirting with each other, concentrating on each others fleshy parts and sizes, and tanking Bombay and tequila.

Using it to pass time while stuck in traffic, or as a musical upper while on the way to work, isn't quite the goal of this sound. Be happy you bought the set of 4 rather than each one individually, as some tracks are better than others, and some CDs better than others, and maybe may make the $24 seem a justified purchase (vs. $74 or so).

Could be sexy enough music, but only if you are lying next to the other already naked and too lazy to get up and change the cd to something else...

      5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2005-09-22

I looked for this CD for quite a while after hearing it played in a Saks store on a Bang Olafsson stereo and making the sales clerk find out what was playing, and I was so glad to finally find it. I especially like the Berlin by Night disc. Everyone who has heard it at my home wants it too...

5 out of 5 stars Perfect music for just chillin'.......2004-01-10

This is my favorite CD for getting into the laid-back, grooving mood. If you want to hang out with your friends and chill, this is great music for that. There's two CD's in the collection. My favorite is the 'by day' one. Track #2 (The Revenge of the Bomberclad Joint) is the best. It's impossible not to move your head front and back as you groove.

5 out of 5 stars LET'S SEE IF THIS REVIEW GETS POSTED!!!.......2003-10-09

It seems that everytime I attempt to review the illustrious "Paris Lounge" series, it never gets posted...so, I will attempt to do a review of the equally impressive "Berlin Lounge" series with hopes that it does get posted, especially since no one haS reviewed it. I picked "Berlin Lounge" up at the local Borders record store after much hesitation, and to my surprise I really liked it (as if I had any doubts with the Wagram Records label). It's obvious from the selection of tracks here that Berlin is very big on Nu-Jazz, Reggae and 2-step, even though for some strange reason, I always thought that musically Germany was on a whole nother level. The tracks on "Berlin Lounge" are quite impressive, especially tracks from virtual unknowns Fauna Flash, Knowtoryus, Fellmann & Louise, Marschmellows, Aromabar, Boozoo Bazou and Hacienda. There are also well-knowns here such as Ian Pooley, Jazzanova, De-Phazz, Jaffa, Truby Trio, Alphaweazen, Athome Project and Terra Nova, who contribute outstanding, and in some cases, overused tracks to "Berlin Lounge"--if I see "Bohemian Sunset" and "Sneakin'" on another compilation CD...! This is a terrific concept from the folks at Wagram--bringing listeners music from the major cities of the world in a lounge format....if you didn't know already, in addition to "Berlin and Paris Lounge", Wagram put together a "London Lounge" and a "NY Lounge"; both to which I have yet to get. It's only a matter of time before there's a "Hong Kong Lounge", or a "Moscow Lounge"...NAAAAH!!!

2 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as the first one.......2007-06-08

I was very disappointed with the collection. The first volume of City Lounge was interesting and eclectic. This one is almost half full of rap and or hip/hop songs (not my favorites), most of which are not any good. The songs of other types are in general uninteresting. There are a few here and there that are at least "listenable", and a couple that I even like, but for the most part it is not worth it. In fact, there is one song that was on the first volume! That is just lazy. Overall this was a waste of money. I'm not going to bother with buying the third collection now, as this one has soured me on the whole idea.

      Album Description

      "High proof." -- Soundcheck

This is what happens when fun becomes serious. Lounge Lizards, formed in the late seventies in New York's downtown scene around cult figure and actor John Lurie, call their mixture of jazz and avant-garde rock "Fake Jazz." In 1991, the group packed Berlin's Quartier Latin for several nights, and the memorable concerts were not only filmed, but also preserved for posterity on two CDs. Features members of Slow Poke and Medeski, Martin & Wood.

4 out of 5 stars If you're gonna buy ONE of their live CDs..........2000-10-25

This disc is more rich and varied than BIG HEART and has no weak cuts on it, unlike the OTHER Berlin live disc, which wastes a ton of time on a total throwaway, "Mr. Stinky's Blues." But be warned -- as I say in my review of the other Berlin disc -- the colors and numbers of these discs change occasionally. Sometimes 2 is 1, 1 is 2, and either can appear in red or black. I dunno why. Anyhow, this is live stuff from the period between VOICE OF CHUNK and QUEEN OF ALL EARS. "Tibet" is actually a VOICE OF CHUNK number under a different name, but I forget which. "A Paper Bag and the Sun," maybe.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Performance from the Lounge Lizards.......2000-08-26

Outstanding performance from the Lizards, with a bit more emphasis on percussion than you might be used to hearing from them. The tracks are fairly lengthy, giving each of the musicians a chance to "breathe" and come into the form a little more than they do on the studio albums. In the live albums, Lurie seems happy to stray from the sheet music, too -- so where the studio albums (particularly Queen of All Ears) are defined by their intricate structure, the structure of this life performance is a more difficult to spot, but shows no less skill or vibrance.

The most vivid track on the album is "Big Heart" -- Lurie and company turn this great song into an 11-minute jam that will have you up and jumping around like they do in the video. The review below by Keith Hunt is a little astonishing. He's apparently disappointed because this "jazz" doesn't have Rosemary Clooney. Here's fair warning: do not buy this album if you're looking for Rosemary Clooney or Tommy Dorsey. This is modern jazz, not swing -- but, it's not obtuse and inaccessible like, say Don Cherry or even Ornette Coleman. To the contrary, Lurie employs some odd tonalities that I don't completely understand, but heck, you can still dance to it.

I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction to the Lizards. Try Queen of All Ears or Voice of Chunk instead. But, once you're in their groove, check this one out.

As far as the recording of the live concert goes, let me just say that it sounds great, though the track divisions are somewhat arbitary (as if the people who made the divisions weren't really familiar with Lurie's music).

1 out of 5 stars Don your beret, this is beatnick jazz..........2000-08-08

I guess that you, dear listener, must consider the source when you seek the opinions of other listeners. I may not be the appropriate source to review this CD, but I'll give it my best shot.

While I admit to enjoying jazz music, I must add the condition that the jazz is NOT strictly instrumental and must have some form of vocal quality about it. "Berlin 1991 Part I" is completely INSTRUMENTAL jazz, so don't expect BB King or Rosemary Clooney to be crooning in the background. Aside from that, it seems to be some arty form of jazz; the kind that only beatnicks and John Steinbeck enthusiasts would find entertaining. I could only picture a room full of black beret wearing new wave jazz cats snapping their fingers and muttering "Go man, Go...." to the music that they seem to be enjoying. Between you and me, dear listener, berets just ain't my style.

Track one began and I thought that the live recording included the sounds of the band warming up and tuning their instruments, but soon figured out that they were really playing a song on track one. It was something akin to that which would be heard in the mountain remoteness of Tibet, hence the name.... "Tibet."

The next tracks included several renditions of instrumental jazz and the large crowd caught on the recording seemed to enjoy it, since the applause was so loud. I guess they had been playing to a Siberian prison camp that hadn't heard any form of music in twenty years. That crowd would applaud when they heard someone banging spoons on the bottom of a frying pan.

I played the CD once and haven't plans to pull it out at any time in the future, but granted there is that warning that this review is composed by someone who prefers to hear someone singing with the help of a band. I'm sure that somebody out there enjoys this sort of stuff. I'll probably walk down the street and hand the CD to anyone wearing a groovy, neato, cool, black beret. They'd probably enjoy it more than I did. From this perspective, I have to give the recording a low score, but take it for what it is worth.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Be warned!.......2000-10-25

      A. The majority of this disc is dominated by an interminable blues-goof off ("Mr. Stinky's Blues") that Lurie used live as a vehicle for introducing the band to the audience near the end of the show. At around 20 mins long, it would have been tedious live, and it's ridiculous on CD, coming smack-dab-in-the-middle of the disc and ruining it. The other cuts are great, but not worth the price. For serious completists only.

      B. While the OTHER volume is worth getting, these two discs -- LIVE IN BERLIN 1 and 2 -- were inconsistently assigned numbers; sometimes 1 is 2, sometimes 2 is 1, for no reason I can explain. The color cover -- red or black -- doesn't seem to be consistent, either (sometimes 1 is red, sometimes 1 is black). Unless you have a confirmed track listing, you can't be sure when ordering that you're NOT BUYING THE CRAPPY ONE. I wouldn't touch EITHER of these discs over the internet for this reason, unless you actually confirm with someone who is HOLDING THE DISC IN HIS OR HER HAND that it ISN'T the one with the "Stinky" stuff.
