Synesthesia

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
At night, Los Angeles shimmers and sparkles like a carpet of fairies. With "Synesthesia," it appears that L.A. native Taylor has created THE trance-tastic soundscape to go along with this glittery town, a shiny double-disc set with no hard edges, only smooth, rounded curves. Moving like a West Coast Digweed-meets-Nick Warren, Taylor has made sure his mix is a timeless collection of favorites instead of just another comatose regurgitation of the latest dance-floor hits. The journey is smooth and fluid, as Pole Folder & CP's "Nightdriver" eases into Quirk's "Yebo" before the pace steps up with the punchy likes of Eyal's "Kaleidoscope" and the slightly psychedelic trance of POB & Boyd's "Luna". The peaks occur on the second disc; first Oko Tek's minimalist "Luminous" drives the beat up, and later John Selway's crazy sci-fi trance-techno "Digital Emotion" will leave heads spinning. Taylor himself concludes the affair; he and POB offer a reflective late-night drive around L.A.'s deserted downtown freeways with "Today." Trance lovers, Digweed-heads, Warrenites, and those partial to a bit of Northern Exposure will find Synesthesia to their immense liking. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars Buck 65 is the man........2007-06-03

I got into Buck 65 about five years ago, when I first heard Anticon's "Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop" record. Track 3, Buck's song "Untitled"... really, really stood out to me. Specifically the line "I used to be the town crier in a city of stone-throwers..." That's not on this record, but it doesn't matter... everything he does is simply ahead of its time, brilliant, fun to listen to, and completely thought-provoking.

You need all of his albums. ALL of them. Trust me.

Oh and by the way, the guy is as humble as they come. He is completely genuine in his work and in his personality. I hung out with him for a half hour the other night in Philly and it was one of the best nights of my life. He was completely cool and I bought everything he had for sale at the show (shirt and four tour-only CDs and and EP) even though I'm currently unemployed.

Buck 65 is my all-time favorite hip-hop artist, second only to Alias, from Anticon, who was also at the show. Extremely talented, intelligent, and HUMBLE are only the beginning descriptions for these guys.

By the way, I know I've rambled... but Synesthesia is truly an awesome record. I don't have a favorite Buck 65 album... as they all blow me away completely. But Synesthesia and Vertex are up near the top. Unconvinced? Check out his myspace (just add /buck65 to that well-known domain) and also his main site which is his name dot com. Or the many fansites/interviews out there... oftentimes you can find soundclips and/or full songs on the various underground hip-hop sites. It's a shame amazon doesn't have soundclips for any of Buck's records except the "This Right Here Is..." album... all of them deserve to be checked out. Amazon, get on this! Ha.

    Buck is the man.

5 out of 5 stars Love Buck? You need this CD.......2005-04-01

I heard one song of Buck's and I knew this guy had something worthwhile to say. Buck seems to know that if you want to talk well about something, talk about something that you know. Throughout this CD Buck lets us see a little more of who he is and where he comes from. I can't get enough of this guy. I love this album.Lots of interesting sounds, stories, and more insight into Buck 65 himself. This is a great CD always something new everytime I listen to it. Give it a chance...you'll be glad you did

4 out of 5 stars A Great Release...Also the Finale for Language Arts.......2005-02-27

Along with Square, Buck 65 also recorded and released Synesthesia in 2002. It is actually Language Arts pt. 5, and wraps up the series. It shares many parallels with Vertex, and is probably the most disregarded recording Buck has ever made. In "attack of the nerds", Buck discusses the travails associated with touring, but he does big up his peers like Slug, Mr. Dibbs, Cut Chemist, Living Legends, etc...

The funniest songs are "grumpy" and "mouth wash",(replete with hilarious choruses)where Buck admonishes personal bad habits, and "Buick 65" celebrates a plethora of mixed-genre inspirations. "Toxic constituents" is Buck's anti-smoking message, and "poop and pee" is a dedication of sorts to his long time girlfriend (and a pretty cool one at that). Musically, the beats are harder, and a few are especially guitar driven.

The thing I do not like about "synesthesia" (a neurological disorder whereby the five senses become disoriented and confused) is that these tracks sound culled from other releases somehow, and the last two tracks are merely remixes of nerds and centaur. Not bad remixes, but I don't understand why there is no finale, given that this is the last album of Language Arts.

A good album nevertheless, which bridges Buck's old-school sensibility with his contemporary work.

4 out of 5 stars Jazz of the future, now.......2006-10-15

Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor open up with the strong "Blues Sparks", which has a few different sections. It starts quietly, but not unobtrusively. Much of the song is driven by a propulsive looping bass synth line. It then changes to a bed of Taylor's vibes and some high-register cornet. As a whole, this disc is fairly typical CU, there is great cornet playing, strong rhythms coming in and out of songs, and strange noises. The album is very strong, though "The Unique Container" and "Tram Transfer Nine" sound like doodlings to me.

    4 out of 5 stars Underrated (post)modern jazz unit.......2006-07-27

On their second album, Synesthesia, Chicago Underground duo -- a.k.a. Chad Taylor and Rob Mazurek; a.k.a. the Chicago Underground minus bandmates -- continue their almost painterly journey into abstraction. I say "painterly" (as others also have) because the group's sound is more colorful than tonal; more textural than linear. Influenced equally by mercurial composers such as Morton Feldman and by their fellow jazz experimentalists in Chicago, Taylor and Mazurek create a time-stretched, impressionistic sort of avant-atmosphere that simultaneously bridges and melts genre rules. Through overdubbing, reassembling and doubling-up (in some tracks Taylor simultaneously plays drums and vibes), the Duo also lay a bridge between real-time playing and studio-as-instrument tinkering. Mazurek's burbling synthesizers and eerie "found sounds" mingle in key with his cornet and with Taylor's vibes, creating moods that could never be created live (without tapes, at least). And in tracks such as the dissected-and-rebuilt "Tram Transfer," engineer John McEntire's mixing becomes as important as the Duo's playing. In the end it's still jazz, of course -- there's no ignoring the way a track like "Threads on the Face" swings -- but, like its more dissonant counterparts in modern improvisation, it's jazz with real possibilities.

3 out of 5 stars Unique in Himmelman's catalog - explores many styles yet remains consistently poppy.......2006-09-02

This is Peter Himmelman's third album, and it is unique in that it is significantly more experimental (in terms of styles explored) than his earlier works and poppier than his later works. This is not a bad thing; in fact, many of the songs on this CD stand with the best in his canon. The title track's bubbly, ever-so-slighly North African-tinged percussion provides a great counterpoint to the lyrics about confused senses and emotions. "Dirty Reasons" finds Himmelman accompanied by a Spanish classical guitar, "Babylon" is somehow reminiscent of Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives" with its bouncy beat punctuated with the occasional organ riff, and "The Sweetest Revenge" is simply one of the best break-up songs ever set down on tape. Other great tracks include "245 Days," "A Million Sides," and "Brother Joel." Peter Himmmelman is a great musician and songwriter and a singular performer. Although many of his later works display a lyrical maturity and spirituality not found here, this CD is still a great listen for fans of intelligent pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Another understated masterpiece.......2007-02-16

Ever wonder what DJ's listen to when they are home? Sometimes I wish I worked at a club where this would work but...Do they exist? Mr. Van Hees is the kind of artist other artists appreciate but may fly under the radar expecially in our old usa. Alas, the grammys are depressing enough. The corporations have won in america so all that's left is old fashioned indies only interesting to other indies(and college kids?) and the corporate schlock and rap. All these things will pass. Sven Van Hees will still be listened to when all this stuff has entered the 5 for $25 rack.
I depress myself sometimes. Buy this but be prepared to wait, mine took more than a month to ship, Mr Van Hees has his own label now-can't wait to hear who else he gathers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, like all the other cd's of Sven van Hees...!.......2007-01-19

Fantastic piece of work, true to the type lounge music like all the other cd's of Van Hees. Excellent back-ground music, easy-listening as well, small jewell....!

    5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2004-02-23

Perfect, everything a Progressive compilation should be. It's deep, it's dark, it's moody, yet at the same time, intriguing. It draws you in, and doesn't let you go until the last note fades away, at which point you're compelled to throw in the other disc...it's a scary cycle. Overall, one of the best-mixed compilations I have heard to date, and one of the few that actually does his livesets justice. Nobody tampered with this tracklisting, it came straight from the heart.
