5 out of 5 stars slowslow.......2007-01-19

very small, very slow, simple and full of beauty. at times, it's like you are with them in that little bedroom studio as they're recording. when you first listen to it, you feel like youre listening to a long forgotten record you loved. the drum kit assembly the drummer chose gives a fresh sound to all of those nostalgic melodies. 'within tolerance' is a song i'll carry with me through the rest of my life.
what more can you ask?
i'll say it slowly: it is simply b e a u t y f u l l.

4 out of 5 stars This ain't no boy band, but it's not death metal either........2004-07-27

I bought this album yesterday at a Mum concert, where Slowblow was the opening act. It's a very good album, and it's obvious that Slowblow is going to go very far, at least in terms of the type of music that they play.

It's important to realize that this is nothing like what Mum plays, at least as far as I've heard. Slowblow's music is much more typical, if not quiet, but it's just as balanced.

The album progresses nicely, with a wonderful opening at the beginning with "Very Slow Bossanova" then slowing down over the next two tracks. One of those tracks, "Within Tolerance", has the most catchy chorus on the album. The album progresses surely after that to "Dark Horse", only two tracks from the end. When the album is finally over, you'll be asking for more.

While I wish this album was a bit faster, it's tracks still have the top spot on my playlist, and I'm sure they will for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars Slowblow makes excellent music for a beautiful film........2004-06-20

This music soundtrack to the debut feature length film by Dagur Kari is mostly free of vocals. Kari is also part of the band Slowblow, originally from Iceland.

You start arguing with yourself about which instruments are your favorites nearly half way through the soundtrack... is it the piano or five-string guitar?

The minimalism of the music works well this gorgeous full-length film that finally came to the US this year. The first scenes of four feet high snowdrifts permeate the atmosphere of this soundtrack. The introduction of electric guitar ponders and glides like a skater across a frozen pond with a haunting musical saw simulating a winter wind.

Thank goodness we hear more of this saw sound again later into the soundtrack.

"Hillbilly" is a banjo-piano melodic piece calling to old Appalachian memories.

The piano work is dramatic and sometimes evokes a feeling of stark loneliness or the melodies are reminiscent of old time merry-go-rounds.

"Komdu Litla Barn" is a non-Slowblow track by Sigridur Nielsdottir that fits perfectly with the sentiment.

"Elegy" is a string track by a non-Slowblow quartet--exquisitely inspirational.

"Groove" is a rich rock 'n' roll instrumental that takes the soundtrack to a different level temporarily, but at least we hear all the Slowblow potential to be ready for their next release on Bubblecore Records.

Their first two albums, Quicksilver Tuna and Fousque, are now out of print. Quicksilver Tuna contains "Is Jesus Your Pal?" which was later covered by Gus Gus on the album Polydistortion.

If you like "Aim for a Smile"--the last track from Noi Albinoi which is used in the end credits, then you should try to look for the soundtrack album Popp in Reykjavik (a documentary film about the Icelandic music scene from 1999), which contains another pop song from Slowblow called "Flirt" with vocalist Emilionu. "Aim for a Smile" is not actually straight on pop but a very emotional sounding style that is addictive upon hearing.

I think this is a hopeful start in getting this band heard through film because they do have an introspective style that is well-suited to the big screen.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for the 'Bass Bounce' and 'Hardfloor' mixes.......2002-05-29

I loved the original mix of "It's No Good", so I bought the single to check out the remixes. This is, without a doubt, one of Depeche Mode's greatest singles ever. Although the 'Speedy J' remix sounds like something out of one of those insufferable Playstation sports games (as you can see, this is the only song on the CD I don't like), the rest of the songs are excellent. The 'Hardfloor' and 'Bass Bounce' mixes are even better than the original! The only other thing I wasn't too keen on was the rap beat style drum loops, but they're excellent songs nonetheless. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars One of Mode's best singles.......2000-04-05

Apart from being the stand out track from 1997's album ULTRA, It's No Good is also easily the best Mode single since Enjoy The Silence. This single is a return to their melodic past which could have come from the Violator period. A haunting song of lost love and obsession. Sometimes, remixes can be a hit or miss affair but Depeche never fail to deliver the goods. The group have always been selective about allowing remixer's to touch their songs and a classic track deserves a good remix. Thankfully there are two superb remixes on this cd single. The Bass Bounce remix highlights the haunting nature of this track with it's trance effects adding much to the original melody, repeating the verse "it is written in the stars above" to a catchy rift. It is one of my all-time favourite Mode mixes. The Hardfloor Mix incorporates a grinding drum and bass feel with some new melody arrangements which hint at the remixer's passion for the original track. This mix became a big hit in the clubs of London, and it's an essential purchase.

4 out of 5 stars really good...but go with "walking in my shoes".......1999-11-04

There I was sittin' and watching MTV when Depeche Mode's "it's no good" video was played and I found it very interesting. The guy decked out in a green suit with the chicks dancing around him. almost like and Elvis persona with the hair and the lounge. But anyways, that's the song that started it all off. I now have most DM albums and everywhere single from Ultra and Songs of Faith and Devotion. Even though "in your room" will remain my favourite DM song. "it's no good" isn't no good...it's GREAT. almost optimism by the dark-boys themselves. it's helped me through relationships and those days you're down. I only gave it 4 stars because I think they could've done better with the remixes. The Speedy J one is very out there, but the rest sound the same. This was the one case where I actually liked the original against the remixes. Shall I advise you to buy "it's only when i lose myself"(the newest from DM) and "walking in my shoes" with one of the coolest mixes ever..."the random carpet mix" and "anadamidic mix", and don't miss out on the b-side "my joy"....

5 out of 5 stars this cd is fun of wonderful tracks that just create magic........1999-09-18

depeche mode always manages to put out great new singles and hits with every album. they capture your mind and heart with every song. martin gore is just a genius with his writing, and he just seems to write songs that anyone can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars "It's no Good" rises above all the dance tunes.......1999-05-03

Depeche Mode's song "It's no Good" must be one of their most "optimistic" songs.Just take the first line"I'm gonna take my time,I've got all the time in the world." This is a great representer for the "ultra" album and for Depeche Mode as a band.David Gahan's voice is more soothing thatn ever and it's got a great dancing beat.I especially enjoy the "hardfloor mix" or "bass bounce mix" which the title says it.You get the bass for those great late night cruises in your car to wake up all those annoying neighbors.I totally recommend this single for any Depeche MODE fan............
