One of those criminally overlooked genius albums.......2005-01-06
Excellent album from an underrated group.......2004-05-17
This album borrows heavily from many other genres like hip-hop, jazz, rock, club, etc, yet it makes its own style and succeeds in doing so. The best description of this CD would be a combination of Moby, De La Soul, and Massive Attack, with maybe a little Overseer thrown in for spice.
The main attraction of the album is the intro track, "Algebra", which would be at home in just about any setting. It uses an overlooked instrument, the harmonica, for its main riff, and the hook will have you nodding your head with the beat.
"Addicted" and "Psychedelic Soul" change the tempo up a bit, and bring a club sound that you would not expect from the other tracks.
The feel of "Soul Searching" will evoke feelings of uptempo jazz and smoky, back-alley clubs. Very well-done.
For the hip-hop flavor, with sounds like early 90's De La Soul or even Das EFX, try out the track "Numb in Both Lips" or "Stoop Kid".
"Who's To Say" and "Time Goes By", two slow, drum-driven tracks that let you down easy, are a fitting decrescendo for an otherwise head-bopping album.
Overall, any of the tracks from this album could easily become your favorite, and it's likely that more than a few of them will. I highly recommend this CD, as it will garner quite a bit of playing time in your stereo.

Falling in line with studio pioneers like Lee "Scratch" Perry, Vincent "Randy" Chin, and Coxsonne Dodd, King Tubby took Jamaican reggae to new places by fragmenting the dub process further than his peers. Tubby separated the musical elements and their vocal counterparts radically, piecing them back together from the bass and drums upward, though sometimes leaving the rhythm as both skeleton and skin. This collection capitalizes on the art of the B-side, beginning with "Tubby Get Smart," originally issued on Leroy Smart's "Mr. Smart," and "Beat Them in Dub" and "Dub Investigation," both of which appeared originally as B-sides to Cornell Campbell singles. Tubby's stripping away of the instrumental and vocal colors is all over these cuts, but so too is his recoloring of each track. The rhythms are at times crisper, the bass more rubbery, and the vocals more broken to bits than on any of the original tracks. But this was Tubby's art. As a companion to other Blood & Fire dub releases--specifically Yabby U's King Tubby's Prophesy of Dread, the Impact All Stars' Forward the Bass, and the excellent Tubby anthology Dub Gone Crazy, this is a great collection. On its own, it might well be the second step to take, after Dub Gone Crazy. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

How you like your dub?.......2000-09-10
I am of course writing of my own preference, so if you like your dub to be vocals-free, dont spend your money on this. If you are like me, you will be pleased.

great stuff.......2000-09-18
Many of their classic hits, including "Hey Grandma," "King of SKA," "Rude Boy Train," "It Mek," and "It's a Shame," are here for the taking and are worth listening to all together.
There are minor issues I have with this collection that lower my usual 5 star Dekker ratings to 4 stars on this one. The first is that there is much filler on this cd that can be avoided by getting all of the above listed tracks on one of his "best of" cds. Completists will appreciate the tracks but newcomers should be treated to the best stuff first, then on to the rest of his material...
The other issue is that the recording quality on some of these tracks is not great, and that's a shame. Digital remastering can't hide major blemishes, such as a few on this cd, so caveat emptor should you choose to get the cd..I personally don't mind it, but some listeners will...
A great collection despite the drawbacks, and well worth getting for any rocksteady or avid Dekker fan.
