5 out of 5 stars One of those criminally overlooked genius albums.......2005-01-06

I got this album by accident. It was included with another Amazon used cd order. Wow! It turned out to be one of my new favorites. The songs are all different moods and genres. The ideas are fantastic. You really should check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album from an underrated group.......2004-05-17

I don't know about many of you, but the first encounter I had with Soul Hooligan was from a commercial for HBO after a boxing match, when they were using a clip from "Algebra". I immediately ran out and got the album for "Algebra", but I am very glad I got the whole thing.

This album borrows heavily from many other genres like hip-hop, jazz, rock, club, etc, yet it makes its own style and succeeds in doing so. The best description of this CD would be a combination of Moby, De La Soul, and Massive Attack, with maybe a little Overseer thrown in for spice.

The main attraction of the album is the intro track, "Algebra", which would be at home in just about any setting. It uses an overlooked instrument, the harmonica, for its main riff, and the hook will have you nodding your head with the beat.

"Addicted" and "Psychedelic Soul" change the tempo up a bit, and bring a club sound that you would not expect from the other tracks.

The feel of "Soul Searching" will evoke feelings of uptempo jazz and smoky, back-alley clubs. Very well-done.

For the hip-hop flavor, with sounds like early 90's De La Soul or even Das EFX, try out the track "Numb in Both Lips" or "Stoop Kid".

"Who's To Say" and "Time Goes By", two slow, drum-driven tracks that let you down easy, are a fitting decrescendo for an otherwise head-bopping album.

Overall, any of the tracks from this album could easily become your favorite, and it's likely that more than a few of them will. I highly recommend this CD, as it will garner quite a bit of playing time in your stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Tuuuuunes!!!.......2002-06-20

Yeah, gotta agree with all of the above: best Summer Cd to come across my path in a long time. "Algebra" just rocks!! Love "Stoop Kid" and "Start The Day" aswell. Highly recommended to those who don't mind a bit of pop mixed in with thier leftfield electronica.

5 out of 5 stars Kickin.......2002-06-20

Soul Hooligan has created some of the most blastin breakbeat and hiphop sounds that I have heard since the likes of Atmosphere and some very early Wiseguys. peace out all

Falling in line with studio pioneers like Lee "Scratch" Perry, Vincent "Randy" Chin, and Coxsonne Dodd, King Tubby took Jamaican reggae to new places by fragmenting the dub process further than his peers. Tubby separated the musical elements and their vocal counterparts radically, piecing them back together from the bass and drums upward, though sometimes leaving the rhythm as both skeleton and skin. This collection capitalizes on the art of the B-side, beginning with "Tubby Get Smart," originally issued on Leroy Smart's "Mr. Smart," and "Beat Them in Dub" and "Dub Investigation," both of which appeared originally as B-sides to Cornell Campbell singles. Tubby's stripping away of the instrumental and vocal colors is all over these cuts, but so too is his recoloring of each track. The rhythms are at times crisper, the bass more rubbery, and the vocals more broken to bits than on any of the original tracks. But this was Tubby's art. As a companion to other Blood & Fire dub releases--specifically Yabby U's King Tubby's Prophesy of Dread, the Impact All Stars' Forward the Bass, and the excellent Tubby anthology Dub Gone Crazy, this is a great collection. On its own, it might well be the second step to take, after Dub Gone Crazy. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars These other reviews aren't rasta.......2003-12-30

I have been a huge roots dubhead for years and own literally hundreds of cds. And let me just say that the other reviews are way off when they say 'this ain't one of Tubbs best'. This blood & fire cd (one of the best re-issuer of classic roots and dub) is top-ranking, to say the least. It is loaded with numerous unforgettable dub classics- especially the Horace Andy dubs, Burning Spear dub, and the johnny Clarke ones, but seriously all these tracks are great. I really just wanted to give some people a heads up to let you know that this cd is certainly worth getting. Forget what the other reviews say, this one's well worth the pay. 5 stars no question!

5 out of 5 stars How you like your dub?.......2000-09-10

I prefer a dub record to have a hint of the songs that were dubbed. "right over there, right over there--ites green and gold is the rainbow.."--Johnny Clark makes an appearance, then abrubtly disappears mid-word (in a shower of reverb), then comes back again a few moments later. Etcetera. Cornell Campbell and Horace Andy are also featured. Roots. Tubby was a bad man.

I am of course writing of my own preference, so if you like your dub to be vocals-free, dont spend your money on this. If you are like me, you will be pleased.

5 out of 5 stars shaka bong from russia is tripping!.......2000-08-17

This is yet another classic to add to your reggae collection, to dismiss this cd is reckless and shows a complete ignorance of reggae. King Tubby is a genius, once one recognizes the subtleties of his style, suddenly ever track becomes essential. Be not mis-lead by those who choose to knock down as opposed to uplift (see Shaka Bong from Russia).

2 out of 5 stars Average Work From the king.......2000-04-18

I know Tubbys work and I would have to agree with Shaka from Russia that this is definitely not one of Tubbys better works! The best tubby album I have come across is Dangerous Dub. Pure Heavyweight Bass lines and hardcore riddims! Dub like dirt is very average in comparison to Tubbys other works. I wouldnt recommend this album but to each his own. Respect!

5 out of 5 stars king tubby and friends: dub like dirt.......2000-03-13

a great dub album, showcases tubby at his best. just listen to "chapter of money" and one will understand why this is a heavy weight dub album. all of the tracks contain first rate riddims, a must for dub fans.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2000-09-18

This cd is a nice encapsulation of Dekker's mid 60's work with the Aces backing him up.

Many of their classic hits, including "Hey Grandma," "King of SKA," "Rude Boy Train," "It Mek," and "It's a Shame," are here for the taking and are worth listening to all together.

There are minor issues I have with this collection that lower my usual 5 star Dekker ratings to 4 stars on this one. The first is that there is much filler on this cd that can be avoided by getting all of the above listed tracks on one of his "best of" cds. Completists will appreciate the tracks but newcomers should be treated to the best stuff first, then on to the rest of his material...

The other issue is that the recording quality on some of these tracks is not great, and that's a shame. Digital remastering can't hide major blemishes, such as a few on this cd, so caveat emptor should you choose to get the cd..I personally don't mind it, but some listeners will...

A great collection despite the drawbacks, and well worth getting for any rocksteady or avid Dekker fan.
