Even before he became an internationally acclaimed DJ and producer, Paul van Dyk was creating tremors in the techno world. Originally released in his native Germany in 1994, 45 RPM marks a pivotal point in the Berliner's career. Thanks to a deal with Mute Records, American audiences finally get a chance to catch up with van Dyk's formative work. The rudimentary club beats and synthesizer effects may sound a bit cold now, but signs of impending stardom are plentifully, particularly on the classic club track "For an Angel" and the high-energy disco cut "Emergency!" --Aidin Vaziri

Like Steely Dan, The The wasn't so much a band as a personal musical conceit/alter ego, this one for English writer-performer Matt Johnson. While Johnson's "band" came of age during the English synth pop boom of the early `80s, electricity was about the only common denominator between Johnson and his fashion slave contemporaries. Indeed, the sense of conscientious outrage that informs many of the two decades worth of singles collected here fostered a perception of Johnson as something of a prickly malcontent. But fashion was never an end in itself for Johnson, even on early pop fare like "Uncertain Smile" and "Perfect." Johnson's restless creative bent has led him to remix many of these tracks anew, ensuring that this set would never be seen as mere artistic obituary. Johnson's reputation as a socio-political crank reached its zenith on tracks like "Heartland" (which decries the reverse cultural colonization of Britain by America) and "Armageddon Days" (a shotgun blast at pan-religious hypocrisy, here introduced by a hilarious parody of the Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz": "Are you ready Jesus? Yeah! / Budda? Uh-huh."), but subsequent history has only proven him sagacious. Pity that Johnson's "Armageddon" lineup was short-lived: The The was a real band in `89, with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr adding his signature sound to "The Beat(en) Generation" as well. And if anyone thought they had Johnson pegged, his acclaimed 1995 Hank Williams tribute, Hanky Panky (represented here by a riveting reinvention of the country legend's "I Saw the Light"), surely set them scratching their heads again. The set is rounded out by three strong new tracks ("Decembersunlight (Cried Out)," a duet with Liz Horsman; "Pillar Box Red"; and "Deep Down Truth," a duet with Wild Colonial Angela McCluskey). The limited-edition two-disc set also includes a bonus disc of eight 12" club mixes previously unreleased in the U.S. on CD. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Pillar Box Red is worth the Purchase.......2007-01-03
Also, make sure you get the limited edition release with the second disc of remixes. Some of the remixes are even better than the originals.
I strongly recommend this, and Mind Bomb, and Dusk. That should satiate you if you are a new The The fan or you want the best and aren't a audiophile completist. Enjoy!

This CD is the place to start if you don't have The The in your collection already. Even if you do, Johnson has remixed many tracks to great effect. Excellent engineering went into creating this CD.
One thing that has always been a hallmark of Johnson's productions. Every song has a strong hook and a hypnotic beat. I'm not into the rave scene, but I would guess that these tracks get played to death at Ibiza discos. And why not? every tune is danceable and the lyrics are sodden with consciousness cleansing layering. In my case, it's just music that creates a great background for whatever I'm doing. And when I choose to actually focus in on the lyrics, I'm not disappointed. The guy actually has something to say! A bit along the lines of Roger Waters as far as world perspective is concerned. Another artist I will never grow tired of! Compare "What God Wants," on Waters' "Amused to Death" CD to The The's "Armaggedon" and you'll see what I mean.
Now I've gotta go listen to some Roger Waters tracks.

Debut Paul Van Dyk album shows early star potential.......2005-06-11
The rather pervily titled 'I'm Comin'' kicks things off, a nice breezy number which bounces along happily and paves the way for the all time PVD classic For An Angel. For me, this original version is also the definitive mix- the e-werk mix may have been more club friendly but i think the synths on this version are much more inspiring and emotional- a true Van Dyk classic.
The album varies between the poppy trance of Step Right On and A Magical Moment to more intense techno trance like Spannung and A World Full of DJs which blasts out of your speakers at a mental tempo. Never mind 45 RPM, i'd say this track is a good 150 BPM!
Some of these tracks sound a little cheesy but i prefer to think of them as uplifting summer numbers especially Step Right On which has a real infectious vibe about it; you just can't stop your feet tapping along to this one.
A couple of tracks on this are a little lightweight and sound a little amateurish today but considering that this was produced in 1994 when PVD was still learning his trade, it's a very good effort.
If you like this, you should also check out the Green Valley EP which is on a similar tip and hints at the more polished sound PVD would later become renowned for.
To sum up, 45RPM is an important part of the Van Dyk back catalogue and all fans of his music should track down a copy of this one.

The US' First Look at PvD.......2002-06-11
Well, considering this music was made before 1994, this was his debut album, and most of his influence up to this point is German, I think this is a damn fine album. It's definately different from other PvD work, but isn't the variety and exploration what makes music great?
45 RPM has more a noticable steady bassline and solid beats in comparison with all of his other work, which gives it a much grittier feel and shows that years of practice and dedication do make an impact. =P
If you're looking for that smoother, dreamy heaven, though, I strongly reccomend Out There and Back - it's by far the best work PvD has done. The great thing about this artist is not just his amazing ability to make music, it's the incredible energy in him that shows up in all of his music - and radiates in OTB.
So, depending on your tastes and ability to go into new situations without preconceived ideas, 45 RPM might or might not be what suits you. Just let go of your expectations and keep in mind the factors under which this album was created and enjoy!
