Customer Reviews:
TRUE hidden gem!.......2007-03-13
I admit I bought this initially because i am a Blood and Fire (the BEST reissue label!) completist, and was struck immediately by the quality of the tracks contained... some of the most beautiful and concious tracks you could hope to dig up are contained within... "Assemble Not Thyself" by the Terrors (WHO???), "Desperate Time" by the Chantells are right up there with the cream of reggae's elite... Phase One's output was not large, but with quality like this - you can tell the label was TRULY a labor of love... Also try to find the equally excellent CD "We Are Getting Bad: The Sound of Phase One"- another NO OVERLAP collection of additional tracks - same era, same amazing quality... BUY THIS CD!
unknown, but among the best..........2005-08-22
I knew none of these singers or vocal groups -- and am amazed at how totally beautiful these sounds are. Incredible harmonies and the lyrics are earnest, spiritual cries for justice.. every track has the extended "discomix" -- great steppers riddims. I totally recommend this if you like real reggae music, one of the best I have heard. Ranks with Heart of the Congos, tho' of course the production sound is diffferent.
Great Music .......2005-05-28
I had not heard of most of these tracks but wow, everyone is solid. If you have not heard of the Chantells, not is the time to check em out.

The HOLY GRAIL of reggae music.......2003-05-12
I've been collecting roots reggae for several years and was surprised that I hadn't heard many of the tracks on the disc. Based on the quality of the Blood and Fire releases, I purchased the disc with out reading any reviews. My friend and I sat down to give it a listen and were mesmerized. All tracks are tight and the quality is superb. It has a great roots feel with simple yet heavy grooves that will make those who don't realize they like reggae ask for a copy. The dubs are nice and the vocal echoes are not out-of-control, like on some dub shots. Every track is hot and most like "Fly Away" but I'm partial to "Trial Days". The opening lines "Here I am standing, I never trouble wicked man..." invokes the vision of a humble Rasta on the street in Jamaica being harassed by police.
After listening to the disc my friend and I checked the reviews. We were not surprised to see this album is highly touted and had to come with a strong review title. To sum it up, get this CD before it is out-of-print and is no longer available.

if you decide to purchase this album, make sure that you are ready to "fly away." fly away to another level of consciousness. this is truly a great album. i cannot get the song "send another moses" out of my head. all songs on the album are great. they are well written and expertly carried out vocal and dub-wise. you must understand that the dub portions on the featured songs are the best dub ever produced.the songs intricately, and at times surprisingly, blend into each other. i wish that i could give this album a rating more than five stars. it is truly a gem.
get it!!!
