Amazon.com essential recording
It's a simple concept--the first dozen singles by New Order collected, a couple of them rerecorded--but it's also a totally entertaining seven-year history of the band that married British post-punk alienation to the relentless hedonism of the dance floor. The band's hits were always deeply unconventional (like the haunting "Blue Monday," essentially a seven-minute drum machine test with a short lyric that alluded to the Falklands War), but they were brilliant productions, layering dozens of electronic countermelodies and percussion tricks over Barney Sumner's uncertain warble and Peter Hook's lead bass parts. Though they're audio snapshots of the dance beats of their time, they've held up both as club classics and as idiosyncratic rock songs. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

This is an essential 2 Disc set. Rarely are compilations this excellent. Extended A-side of majestic proportions. B-sides of vast or trifled status. Combine it all and you get a perfect set.

This isn't my favorite album or band by far, but at the very least should be appreciated.
I wish the sound quality wasn't so poor, though. Makes the album a little difficult to jam to.
Good.......2006-12-25
but are rather simplistic musically speaking. I would rather enjoy the Sex Pistols or Ramones, they are the kind of punk that grabs me.

Punk ain't dumb. Not with a creative lineage that includes everything from the Clash to Nirvana. Bad Religion has been part of that history since 1980. Whatever they lack in instrumental virtuosity is made up for here in singer Greg Graffin's urgent two-minute manifestos on society and world politics. As on other Bad Religion releases in the '90s, No Substance preaches militant social consciousness to the punk masses, imploring the youth to "raise your voice!" There was more variety in Bad Religion's sound when guitarist Brett Gurewitz was still in the band, but the band has taken their relatively simple musical formula to a sophisticated level here, crafting tight, intelligent nuggets of punk. --Steve ApplefordCustomer Reviews:
We are the priveliged elite.......2007-03-04
The lyricism is strong as on any other Bad Religion record, the musicianship is very good, (Hetson and Baker really working to make up for the loss of Mr. Brett) and the production is slick, but not overly so. Songs like "Voracious March of Godliness," "Raise Your Voice," and "Mediocre Minds" are all songs that could easily find their way onto a Bad Religion mix CD.
All said and done, this record gets a somewhat bad rep, mostly because of the Brett situation. Well worth the purchase.
ITs Not to bad.......2007-02-16
2. Shades of truth - 6/10 Its an OK songs but its pretty long
3. All fantastic images - 8/1- Pretty good song Not to short not too longs. The lyrics are pretty good in this one
4. The Biggest killer in american history - 9/10 One of the best songs on the record(in my opinion) , I wish they released this as a single instead of "raise your voice" i think it would have been more successful. The only down side it the chorus is kind of repetitive.
5.No Substance-8/10 Really good lyrics, However i do not like the music in this one alot.
6.Raise Your Voice- 6/10 Its another OK songs In my opinion the should have put the version that was release as single (with a guest singer)
7.Showing the seeds of Utopia- 8/10 short fast and great lyrics.
8.The hippy killers- 7/10 pretty good song I like the lyrics alot more than the music, The whispers are pretty creepy thoe.
9.The end of the millennium address- 4/10 Its not the good in my opinion But some of the lines are really good.
10.The vicarious march of godliness- 6/10 Is really longs and the chorus kind of gets on my nerves
11.Mediocer Minds- 9/10 A grate songs fast Short and grate lyrics and grate music.
12.Victims of the Revolution- 6/10 ITs OK The music is interesting at some-points but boring at others lyrics are pretty good
13. Strange Denial- 7/10 Pretty good i like the music of the verses alot the chorus is pretty good too. THe lyrics are Good .
14.At the mercy of imbeciles -8/10 Grate song short fast and grate music and lyrics. Shortest song on the album
15. The same person - 7/10 Pretty good The chorus is worst part of the song but its not that bad, The verses are pretty good in my opinion
16.In So many ways- 7/10 pretty good it has a wierd felling to it .
The Booklet has some cool pictures. But its pretty short.
Over all i give the album 7/10 Its good but not grate its pretty long compared to some other albums. there are a lot of songs on the album and none of them suck badly.
Paid Full Retail Price, and No Regrets.......2007-01-17
I do not think this CD is such a great departure from BR's prior works as the Amazon critics seem to believe. You could move slow songs like "The Answer" from Generator - or "Struck a Nerve" from Recepie for Hate - onto here, and they'd fit right in.
There are a couple of throwaway tracks like "Hippy Killers" and "Biggest Killer in American History". (Very repetitive sounding). But I think the rest of the album stands up well, to the BR library.
Very very good........2006-05-21
(Find and read the lyrics for The State Of The End Of Millenium Address and tell me that they don't make you scratch your head.)
This album is incredible.......2006-04-15
No Substance is an amazing, just amazing recording (uh, except for "Hear It" which is commercial schlock). I have listened to this album literally hundreds of times. I cannot recommend it highly enough, especially "Mediocre Minds". This is one of the best BR CDs, and that's coming from a hardcore fan. Buy it. You won't regret it. I absolutely love this album.
Did I say this is THE most listened to CD in my *entire* collection, which ranges from punk to new age to folk to techno to metal to hippie jambands? Yes. I cannot recommend this highly enough, 5 stars isn't enough. Thoughtful, interesting, ferocious in places, just freakin' great.
Ignore the folks whining that it isn't Suffer or No Control or Generator. No Substance has rewards a-plenty for the listener who pays attention. Highly recommended.

Inspectah Deck's debut LP has been one of the most eagerly awaited in Wu-Tang's long history. As the Clan's vaunted lead hitter on pivotal posse cuts like "Triumph" and "Protect Ya Neck," Deck displays a gift for metaphoric mastery and complex rhyme schemes. In fact, few other MCs are more effective than Deck at creating evocative street-level images with single line strokes from his lyrical stylus. Line for line, Deck could easily outshine even fellow Wu members like Method Man or Raekwon, but in a new Wu era where RZA has opted out of handling the bulk of the group members' production, Deck loses out considerably. Uncontrolled Substance is nowhere as banal as GZA's Beneath the Surface, and there are some great tracks ("Femme Fatale," "9th Chamber"), but writ large, RZA's absence is the disc's more glaring shortcoming. How you gonna have the Wu's most venomous rhymer trying to come with an album without the clique's most accomplished beat chemist behind him? This is a great album, but it could have been far greater. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:
Why try and Test, the Rebel INS?.......2006-12-26
The only thign wrong with this album is the lack of RZA produced tracks. He only comes through for "Movas N Shakers"(in which the beat isn't that great for RZA standards) and Friction(pretty good,Masta Killa rips it),which isn't enough.Of course Wu-related producers come throuigh to help(4th Disiple on 9th Chamber-EXCELLENT!) and True Master on R.E.C Room. Also Pete Rock pops in for Trouble Man,which the beat is pretty cool. Even Inspectah Deck himself produces some tracks which aren't half bad. But,to me its not about the beats, its about the ryhmes and use of wordplay aand,as expected,INS comes through for it.
Top 5 tracks
1.Word On the Street(prod.Inspectah Deck)
2.9th Chamber(feat. Barreta 9,Killa Sin,La The Darkman,Streetlife)(prod.4th Disiple)
3.Friction(feat.Masta Killa)(prod.RZA)
4.Trouble Man (prod.Pete Rock)
5.Femme Fatale(prod.Insepctah Deck)

so this, all those, exept tical, hahaha, and gravediggaz six feet deep and 36 chambers are all the must have wu cd's.

Inspectah Deck - Uncontrolled Substance.......2006-05-14
Lyric wise, INS brings the heat in EVERY track. Even the guest appearances in the album, THEY even bring lyrical heat. But I didnt find ONE track that I thought that INS was weak in. Some tracks hes more lyrical than others, but ever track has a story/point or good rhyme sceme to it. INS doesnt fail ONCE lyrically in this album, so when you get this, make sure to take note he doesnt fail lyrically.
Now, production wise, RZA produces a couple tracks but thats it. INS even produces a couple tracks for himself! Talent. And the beats that he makes for himself are hott! I think every single song on this album has at least a decent or better than decent beat, and some are classics. Some of my favorite beats are "Forget Me Not", "Uncontrolled Substance". I like the "9th Chamber" beat just for the fact thats its really grimey. I dont have to name all my favorites just notice all the beats are cracken. Real Wu-Tang music.
INS's first album, its cracken lyrically and production wise. I dont see NO reason why you would hate or even barely dislike this album. INS brings so much variety in this album its crazy. If your a Wu-Tang fan or a HIPHOP fan this album is a MUST buy!!!
My Top 5 Songs
1.Forget Me Not
2.Longevity
3.Word On The Street
4.Trouble Man
5.Friction
INS explodes!.......2006-03-10
Production wise, I am VERY pleased on what was made. It is not the conventional, stereotyped "Wu-Tang" grimey sound and I think this is one of its strengths. By choosing to employ funk-style beats INS has carved out a niche for himself. So what if he doesn't have RZA on the wax? All of RZA's disciples are here, INS produces a track and even Pete Rock (!!!!) produces some. Overall, if you're looking for the 'street level' production of albums like 36 Chambers or Tical then you will not find it here. Instead, it brings me back to Ghostface's "Ironman" and something like Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "The Main Ingredient".
Can't reccomend this CD enough.

Album Description
The Lovelies are the perfect marriage of loud guitars and velcro-strength melodies. As one fan described them: "...they have L7's crunchy guitars mixed with the hooks of Elastica." In a world dominated by testosterone-driven guy rock, these girls bring the noise and the melody that's been sorely missing on the radio and in your local stadium. Fans of the Breeders, and the aforementioned Elastica, will take to this CD with a vengeance. We're sure of it! There's rockers, ballads and anthems galore on this CD. One listen will make a believer and fan out of you.

Tom Kimmel writes, "With me, first comes the song, then comes the work tape. These recordings, made over a period of time to document new songs, were never meant to see the light of day, but when I recently stumbled across several of them I was struck by how vibrant and fresh the performances seemed to me. Sifting through these tracks, which were recorded at home, usually using a single mic, the idea of collecting the best of them for this album took shape. -- Fans have been asking me for years to make an album that sounds JUST LIKE one of my solo live performances, and this album is IT."Customer Reviews:

Whoo!.......2006-11-23
Think about the day you heard Solo's first album and how good it made u feel. Think about how D'Angelo's Brownsugar album cheesed you off- as it was too short!! That is Big Brooklyn Red's Foreword right there. Think about Jodeci when they bust out Forever My Lady, and how Musiqsoulchild brought back the neo-classical soul sound with his first album. Think Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite...
Sadly, BBR won't be as widely listened to...and heard. He is signed to some small label that cannot (or can't be bothered) afford to distribute and market his music as they should. But for us die hard fans of pure RnB/Soul, we shall support him. The sound is pure. I rate this album 5 stars.
