Boy crazy, girl crazy, or somewhere in between, the Pittsburgh inhabitants of Showtime's eyebrow-raising Queer as Folk series all meet on middle ground: the dance floor. This relentlessly upbeat soundtrack of flavor-of-the-month dance-club anthems and campy synth-pop is confectionary fun that never loses its wits. Katty B.'s remake of the Footloose classic "Let's Hear It for the Boy" is a hoot, as is a cover of Divine's 1984 single "You Think You're a Man," which devolves into a naughty call-and-response of "boy" and "toy" that would make Madonna's early years seem tame. The good mood continues with Alcazar's frenzied "Crying at the Discotheque," which contains the intriguing couplet "The golden ties, the silver years / You wore a tie like Richard Gere." Add Kristine W.'s undeniable dance hit "Lovin' You," the Cher-like Heather Smalls's "Proud," and Mint Royale's Abba-kissed "Shake Me," and a taste of nostalgia kicks in. That said, the album knows when to quit; thankfully, there are no clichéd Gloria Gaynor or Donna Summer remixes to be found, just a batch of friendly, sexy tracks that perfectly complement the show's revved-up characters. --Kristy Martin

5 out of 5 stars THIS SHOW IS A "MUST" SEE.......2006-11-05

With every episode, you just dont want to stop, high drama and sometimes a little shy with the charactors making love or intimate encounters, casual or extreme. But reality sometimes is hard to watch, depending on your shyness. This show makes you laugh and cry to extremes. I felt like when I was watching the last season, I was losing a family I will never see again. I miss this show very much. There has never been a show with such love for the actors and the way they brought past experiences remembered in my own life. I miss you, everyone who made this show possible.
p.s. the music is this show, I own all the soundtracks also...awesome

4 out of 5 stars Listen to the Queer Beat.......2005-09-11

The First Season Soundtrack of Queer As Folk....

...starts of with the catchy "Spunk" by Greek Buck (it also ends with this song which sort of strikes me as a pointless waste of space). Anyways it goes on to feature such great songs as "Proud" by Heather Small which is really one of my favorite songs on the compilation. As other mention frequently, it really is a gay anthem.
Kristine W.'s "Lovin' You" will get anyone in a loving mood, with its beat, beating its way to your heart.
Many people complain that the soundtracks complain non-disco tunes. Well, to them I say: Why shouldn't they? There are some great non-disco songs on here that I really enjoyed in the show. Jay Jay Johnson's "Suffering" is a great song to listen to. It really makes me remember the dramatic moments in the show. That one along with Touch and Go's "Straight to Number One".
Back to the disco tunes however, who can ever forget "Let's Hear It for the Boy" by Katty B. and "High School Confidential" by Carole Pope. Those two songs should bring an image of out-and-proud Justin for any Queer As Folk Fan. I can never forget that scene when Justin tore off his shirt (he did that to both these songs didn't he? hehe) and showed Brian (to Let's Hear it for the Boy).
My Favorite fast-paced gay "thumpa-thumpa" tracks on this compilation are "Start Rockin'" by Antiloop, and B.U.'s "Summerfire"
The reason I gave this great soundtrack only 4 stars is because there should have been more. Queer As Folk has probably the best soundtrack in the history of television. There are so many songs that are hard to find. How can they give us only 14 songs? I really feel there should have been 2 discs in this set with at least 30 songs. I mean, the UK soundtrack offers nearly 40 songs and it lasted only 10 episodes.
Anyway, that is my perspective of this soundtrack. The bottom line is, if you enjoy Queer As Folk, you WILL enjoy this.

3 out of 5 stars QUESTION-SONG-HELP.......2005-08-29

remember the episdoe where emmett's online sex psuedo screen name comes to life? It was episdoe 10 or 9 or so.
Well after he has sex with that online sex guy after his screenname asked for the address to screw him, remember how emmett walks into babylon and his shirt is open and he's not smiling but all yeah i got laid look?
The song playing is a 70's song called somewhere like, if you really want me let me know.
Can someone please tell me who sings the song? Because the version i have is extremely crappy (and doesn't say anything cept 70's-if you really want me) and i'm wondering now if the techno version-where instead of instrutments you have guys singing na na na na na...- is under the title somewhere like, if you really want me let me know (techno version)
thanks to whoever tries to think really hard for an answer! XD

3 out of 5 stars looking back now--should have been two volumes.......2005-08-16

After 5 seasons of soundtracks, i prefer the double disc sets that have longer versions of each song. Not to mention, they could have made a more thorough soundtrack with all the missing songs people were searching for. My favorite part of this volume now is the opening theme song! Brings back fond memories. By the way, this volume is not beatmixed as are some of the others. track times:

1. spunk (:29)

Released just in time to usher in the final season of Showtime's gritty, gay-themed series, this accompanying fifth soundtrack anthology expands upon a smart pop music sensibility whose popularity parallels the show itself. The 20 beat-savvy tracks here were inspired by the nightspot that's an integral part of the series' drama, a vibrant double-disc collection that interweaves such 80's-vintage club staples as Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," and The Pet Shop Boys' (with an assist from Peter Rauhofer) "Break 4 Love" with more contemporary grooves like Ultra Nate's "Free" and "Safe From Harm" by Narcotic Thrust. Fans will note that a number of the versions here differ from those actually aired on the show. But as mixed by Chris Cox (disc one) and Abel Aguilera (the edgier, more expansive disc two) and seamlessly sequenced sans track gaps, the intent is not to offer up a slavish show song-score, but rather to synthesize a fictional night at Club Babylon that stretches from the first disc's upbeat pop to the sensual, hypnotic rhythms of Suzanne Palmer and Rachel Panay that highlight the closer. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pumpin' compilation.......2007-04-16

I have this compilation on my music player and use it to boost my spirits at the gym, and it always works. I agree that the first cd takes a bit to warm up especially since the already-mentioned back-to-the-80s song after Ultra Nate (a song I don't really like). A really great circuit music compilation that stands on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-02-15

I thought the first CD was better than the second, although there were cuts on the second CD I liked very much. Having been in my prime in the 80s, I was familiar with most of the music, and took me back to Brussels, Belgium and the club scene there. Dare I say I use these CDs for work outs now LOL. From an old school clubber, I give it 4 thumbs up. Only because there were some dragging tracks on the 2nd CD, and not enough mix in my opinion. That Spin Spin Sugar is awesome!

3 out of 5 stars First disk much better than second.......2007-01-22

The mixing was really great on these CDs, but the first disk was definitely much better than the second.

4 out of 5 stars Club Babylon.......2007-01-20

Slightly dissappointed with this soundtrack. There are some good songs on this 2 disc collection, however, it wasn't as good as the season 1-5 soundtracks were.

5 out of 5 stars Behind Club Babylon.......2006-10-27

For those who haven't purchased this anthology it's a must have!!! The 2cd set captures the spirit of Babylon. A night at the club is like this and here is your own personal ticket to Babylon..

For me, it fit right in with my Ministry of Sound and Gatecrasher cd's ..

As a fan I loved it... As a House Music and Club junkie it was a wish come true!!!!
I highly recommend to everyone... The Babylon theme is very present througout the first cd and more distinct in the second... Krintine W. who is synonomous with QAF / Babylon featured almost every season (except 4) is featured twice beutifully ... Her unique talent and sheer vitue make this trip to Babylon worthwhile !!!!

CD one has a widely accessible range using new wave and hard house beats we commonly associate with the "Babylon" genre. The second CD expands on the "Babylon" theme further stepping "out" by using darker beats that are more "circuit" or "NYC" beats I am used to.. "Babylon" never compromises. Both CD are really solid and both are unique enough to stand alone or playing in sequence...

"Lio", "Delerium", "Mandalay" "Kosheen", "Roc Project", "The Chemical Brothers" and "Gioia" are strangely absent from this compilation which were featured throughout seasons 2 and 3 provided the "queer" sound that became associated with QAF. This by no means takes anything at all from this truly awesome CD . Chris Cox and Abel Aguilera do an excellent job in stepping away from that and featuring artists that are truly unique add showcasing new ones to QAF

i laughed... I cried... I celebrated... I had a melacholy experience with Season 5 closing what is essentially a groundbreaking television this CD lets you take some of that "Babylon" home!!!!

I had a night out with Brian, Mikey, and boys of Babylon

The only thing I want more of is "Babylon Series" CDs!!!!!

The liner notes make it immediately clear. Underneath the jewel box, there's a black cover; inside, a cast picture with the artists all dressed in funeral-style clothing. All this serves as a reminder that the fifth season of Queer As Folk is the end of an era. As far as this musical collection is concerned, the "thumpa-thumpa" dance hits (as the boys on the show say) are well chosen: you'll find everything from the remix of club classic "Free" by Ultra Naté to DV Roxx's rave-style "Hardcore MuthaF***a," on through to a pumped-up remix of Cyndi Lauper's "Shine," a track exclusive to this collection. There are also some other great, unclubby tracks within QAF's grooves, including the PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke duet "This Mess We're In" and Madeleine Peyroux's Billie Holiday-esque "Dance Me to the End of Love." The Scissor Sisters' track "The Skins," is a perfect album opener, with its disco sound, while the disc closer "Proud," by Heather Small (which accompanies the final scene in the series) is an exclusive remix of this Pride Parade-worthy track. The tune (reminiscent of Cher's "Believe") is a resounding gay anthem, complete with a chorus that sings "what have you done today to make you feel proud?" Considering the fact that this successful series has changed the way gays and lesbians are portrayed on television, the creators have plenty to feel proud about. --Denise Sheppard

Following in the lines of the other 4 seasons' soundtracks, this one is really good. There are some great songs on here, like "skin" and "personal jesus". I highly reccommend this, you won't be dissappointed.

Those who don't understand going out for the Friday night happy hour, imbibing liberally, and then heading out for the 4 a.m. butt-shifter should avoid this mix at all costs. It's an ode to the bridge-and-tunnel clubbers, a tribute to the Gap dancers of our world, a wink at gym-goers nationwide and a general nod to modern K-tel disco lovers. No-brainer floor-thumpers such as Kim English's "Everyday" and Etta James's "Miss You (Illicit Remix Edit)" are groovers and shakers, while Satoshi Tomiie's "Sneaky One (featuring Deanna)" and Mandalay's "Beautiful (Calderone After Hour Mix)" are sweaty 3.30 a.m. grinders. For Kings (and Queens!) everywhere, Second Season is simple, straight-up, disco-house sugar. --Steffan Chirazi

3 out of 5 stars More dance than season one-but still only one disc.......2005-08-17

Progressing towards what it would eventually be on season 3, volume two segues strictly dance songs together, but it's still only one disc of music like volume 1. Season 3 would break out with an all out club feel on disc 1 with all long versions of club hits-and eventually, the Club Bablyon disc would go with 2 discs worth of it. Great dance tracks here, but track times are too short, and the disc doesn't utilize a full 20 minutes of disc space! It would have been amazing to have longer versions of hard to get diva anthems like Rising, one of the strongest songs on here. Track times:

1. hide U (5:07)
2. Absolutely not (4:46)
3. everyday (4:38)
4. caught up (4:24)
5. Rising (4:23)
6. Sneaky one (4:14)
7. Harder better faster stronger (4:59)
8. Star guitar (5:00)
9. Miss you (5:02)
10. Plenty (5:04)
11. Underwater (4:59)
12. Beautiful (5:07)

3 out of 5 stars "Ridiculously Romantic".......2005-08-16

The one song that I'm a more than surprised not to see on the Season One soundtrack was "Save The Last Dance for Me" by The Drifters. The song that really sealed the end of the first season, the most piviotal song of the entire show, when Brian shows how much he cares about Justin. Ugh...that song should have been on there.

5 out of 5 stars Love IT!.......2005-07-12

I might be a little late in buying this, but I'd have to say this CD is "off the chain" !!!! Love it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Loves it!.......2005-01-29

the entire CD was completely ... heart thumping! that is probably the best word(s) for it. even at the slowest songs the bass is still vibrating. The music for me sets the stage for the show. if you like upbeat trance, high energy... this cd isn't for you. Although this CD gets you going.. it isn't as *trancey* as some others. I dunno.. altogether, way better than Seasons 3 & 4 soundtracks.. <33

5 out of 5 stars Way better than the first.......2004-12-19

This cd is actually good, although I don't really care for Koshen's "Hide U." I think the original version is better than this one, but forget about that, the party really begins with Deborah Cox "Absolutely Not" the cd takes off from there. "Rising," "Sneaky One," "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," "Star Guitar," and the rest are all just faboulous. This is an excellent addition to your collection of club mixes that you shouldn't pass up.

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack!.......2006-04-04

I am going to go against the grain here and say that the second disc is better. I love the dance hits, and they are great in the show, but the second disc is the one that brings back memories of specific scenes from that season. I would have given it five stars, but there should have been more tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Happy I got It, but..........2005-10-03

This album was probably worth it, if only for "The Sound of Violence" by Cassius. Still can't get it out of my head, a month later. The second disk is fairly good, with Sneaker Pimps' surly new vocalist, BSS's Lover's Spit (first song of theirs I ever heard, back when the episode came out!), the Soundtrack of Our Lives Song is great, too. The first disk isn't quite up to par with the previous seasons songs, though Get Some Lovin is great.
All in all, a good album...but I'm still waiting for some mega album to be released, something more along the lines of the season 4 soundtrack...which had a good mix of everything. The music in this show has turned me on to so many incredible bands over the past few years....yes. There should really be a large compilation cd of more music from all the seasons.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty much the ultimate Queer as Folk sdtk.......2005-08-17

One disc of continuous club mixes, and one disc of the more moody tracks used for the emotional moments in the show. Disc 1 only does it half right though. We get a couple of long versions, Kristine W (10:41), the Roc Project (the rare tiesto mix!!!) (6:36) and Gioia (the rare junior mix!!!) (8:15), but the rest of the tracks last under 5 minutes-and 30 minutes of disc space goes unused!!! This was a moment to shine, to give us 8 plus minutes of each of these dance songs in a continuous, 1 hour mix!!! Oh well...you'll have to pick up Club Babylon for that. And although this is TWO discs worth of music---disc 2 is only 32 minutes long!!!

5 out of 5 stars I'm in the minority of a minority!.......2005-07-06

Am I the only one out there who loves the second CD in this set?! Apparently so! I think it's terrific for not being so "on the nose" as the obvious disco cuts of the first CD. "Loretta Young Silks" by the new male lead vocalist of the Sneaker Pimps is sumptuous! That the fist dance disc is great is a given, but if you like gay troubadors like Daniel Cartier, then you'll love the "come down" disc after dancing to the first one!

4 out of 5 stars Head down to the dance floor.......2004-12-20

This is a great cd, it contains some of the hottest club anthems around, but the problem is that it only has eight songs on the first cd. The second cd, in my opinion, is disposable. I wouldn't go as far as to say that this cd is better than the second season. Although, it does have better songs, like Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" and the Tiesto mix of "Never Past Tense." Overall, I would have given it a five star rating if it weren't for the useless second cd and because the first cd is too short.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional soundtrack!.......2007-04-18

Season 4 has my favorite soundtrack of all five seasons. Unlike the other soundtracks, I don't find myself loving some tracks and skipping others. Season 4 of Queer as Folk was an emotional one and this reflects that. The mood is low key but multi-textured: it gets introspective, hopeful, sad, sexy, happy, and yes there are danceable tracks too. Somehow it does this seamlessly. There are some real gems here. Others have mentioned Cue to the Pulse: absolutely wonderful. There is also the cool and sexy Suede song "Attitude", the melancholy "Love of the Loveless" by Eels, and bitter sweet love song "Scream" by Ima Robot. The lower star reviews seem to be by people who were expecting the thumpa thumpa - and while there is nothing wrong with that, if you let go of that expectation, you may discover something deeper. More than any other soundtrack I find myself reliving the tender moments between the characters. The last track "Wonderful Life" by Black ends on a note of quiet but joyful optimism: everything will be okay. The characters suffer many challenges but, as Michael says about his beloved comic book heroes: "despite everything they survive". Perhaps I'm making this sound more down than it is - there is a lot of fun in these tracks too and I often find myself dancing. I've also had the thrill of discovering new bands to explore. I can't say much more other than recommend that you give this a listen. It's a rare treat to come across such a well-thought out album.

4 out of 5 stars Great volume in the series.......2005-10-12

Honestly, this cd is worth the price for "Cue the Pulse to begin" alone. As others have said, that right there should get you to buy this cd without hesitiation. But, there are other fantastic songs on this cd that are equally great and make this cd satisfying. It ends, for instance, with "Wonderful Life" by Black. I hadn't heard that for almost 15 years or so, when I first had the Black full length cassette, which had an equally awesome song on it called "Everything is Coming Up Roses" that got tremendous airplay here in SF. So, point being, it was great to see the song included here, and brought back great memories, outside of the fact that it's a song with a great message.

Other songs on here...yes, others have mentioned, some are weaker than others. But overall, you get a great deal. Highly recommend this cd as something of a middle ground when you want something other than the constant thumpa-thumpa of Club Babylon.

Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-09-12

The music is very sexy, sand and happy, all the feelings that a gay man faces during life. Well for that matter the feeling that everyone faces.

Is good to listen while driving.

Hope you like it!

OJB

5 out of 5 stars great thumpa thumpa.......2005-09-06

all the QAF soundtrack CD's do such a great job of catching the feel of the show, from the thumpa thumpa on the dance floor to the tender moment between characters. And this disc is no exception. Great dance tunes on this one.

4 out of 5 stars The oddest approach to a QAF soundtrack so far..........2005-08-17

First two seasons, all dance music. Season 3 recognized the moodier moments in the show and gave us two separate discs-1 dance, 1 not. Season 4 just tosses together both styles in 1 disc crammed with 14 tracks. In terms of continuity, it sort of disrupts the flow. Perhaps they should have just opted out of putting any dance music this season since this was the least "hi-nrg" season of the bunch, and kept this volume moody and dark, which all works well. The coolest thing though is that you get a full 4 minute version of the new theme song by Burnside Project. And it's pretty apparent that the release of Club Babylon, which is ALL dance music on 2 discs, including many songs not even used in the show, is to satiate those fans of the dance discs.

4 out of 5 stars Dance without words and fun music with words.......2005-08-29

This CD set turned out to be different than I was expecting. I thought that the songs were going to be mostly like "You Think You're a Man" by Full Frontal (on CD #2), which I purchased previously on its own as a single. Turns out that CD #1 is almost entirely dance music without lyrics (okay, except for the occasional repeated catchphrase, the T.V. Series themesong, and "It's Raining Men"). Good music, but not what I was looking for. CD #2 has a lot more songs which include lyrics, which is a lot closer to what I was looking for, and I really enjoyed them. I especially enjoyed trying to remember who the original artists were on some of the cover songs, and for other songs trying to figure out if some of the artists on the CD were the original artists or doing covers. Often, I hate cover versions of songs, but I really like the covers (and/or originals?) on this CD set; they're different from the other verisons; more fun :-)

All-in-all a fun CD set, and I think it's really neat that the CD's are almost perfectly divided between songs with lyrics and songs without; makes it easier to pick them out for a CD player for parties :-)

5 out of 5 stars Dressed in Something Sparkly on a Hot Summer Night!.......2005-07-06

That's how these CDs make me feel! You will not even MISS the original singers on these remixes, but you will be bringing these discs to every party you attend this summer!

I ordered up this 2CD set with yet another 2CD set off Amazon, "Cyber DJ in the MIx," also a UK import , but of current Asian disco-dance anthems (of BRITISH Origin), that I ended up loving just a smidgen more than this one!

All I know is that my summer is bookended by the 4 best dance discs I have EVER heard! Viva La Diva Disco!

And on one last note, Emma Bunton (formerly Baby Spice) also covers the tune "Santa Maria"-that Tatjana does here brilliantly-on her UK 2004 single "Crickets Sing for Anamaria" and it is JUST as FUN!

4 out of 5 stars Disk one blah - but disk two ROCKS!.......2002-04-05

You can listen to disk one once and just put it away, but disk two will take you to Babylon! I've enjoyed it over and over. It's a high-energy dance mix.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the new QAF Soudtrack.......2001-11-28

This is a really good CD but it is not as good as the CD for the new queer as folk series. I urge you to get both because they are both good cds.

5 out of 5 stars Cheers to the gay boys!!!.......2001-06-07

Finally, a gay dance cd thats more than just a disco diva remix! Who cares if its all a bunch of covers, this is a well constructed cd that sparkles with every track.....This is the kind of music that makes drag queens strut in their vintage Balenciaga cocktail frocks and Chelsea boys rip off their D&G muscle t-shirts and dance in a frenzy of pride...(PS - Also the BEST work-out cd in years!) Snatch it up now, boys and girls, and make this June the BEST Gay Pride Month ever!

Disc 1 has lots of full length hard to find tracks, including the exclusive full length remixes of Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out (Almighty 12" Anthem Mix), and Heather Small - Proud (Peter Presta Extended Mix). The latter is about three minutes longer than the Mixshow edit found on other compilations. Great remixes. Well done.
