5 out of 5 stars What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

1 out of 5 stars Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!

3 out of 5 stars A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

5 out of 5 stars Robeson at his best.......2001-03-24

This album consists of recordings Paul Robeson made in Britain durong the 1920s. He is accompanied by the great pianist Lawrence Brown or by a small orchestra led by Ray Noble. The songs on this disc are spirituals or pop songs of the era, and Robeson shines on every one of them. Robeson has an uncanny ability to make any song his own property, and this is especially true on his version of "Little Pal" - originally a saccharine semi-racist ballad written for Al Jolson. Robeson turns the song into a searing lament of an estranged father, and makes the song valid even today with his urgent, committed delivery. The majority of the songs on the cd are spirituals, and Robeson's versions are definitive in every sense of the word. All in all, there isn't a bad track here, and as an introduction to Robeson's work the record is priceless. The only aspect worth criticizing is the fact that the liner notes seem to shy away from the fact that Robeson was the first important black artist to actively fight for civil rights. The music here, however, is extremely beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2005-09-11

This CD is definitely a great compilation of contemporary 'lounge' or 'chill-out' music. I don't like to compare creative people because two artists are never the same; but seeing that this group does not get many reviews for their music, I'm going to go ahead and do so since it seems not many have discovered them yet. Quite obviously, Fragile State's sense and style is comparable to Thievery Corporation. I'd say "Just Got Home" has a similar R&B/Soul-ish kind of sound as you'd find in Theivery Corp's Verve series of compilations, with an overall more mellow feel and laid-back tempo than Theivery Corp's "The Cosmic Game" CD. If you like those guys from DC, I'm quite sure you'd enjoy chillin with these players from the UK. [In fact, its well worth your time to check out Fragile State's two other CDs of original music ("Voices from the Dust Bowl" and "Facts & Dreams") which have a different, more jazzier style. The track "New Bassa" on the "Dust Bowl" CD is quite remarkable.]

Two issues about "Just Got Home", though:
First off, I've been sent the UK version of the CD, rather than the one pictured. My CD has an interesting picture of a leather sofa, faux fur rug, lamp, and end table with a Buddha statue all plopped on the sands of a beach. More interesting than the orange cover with the headphones, I suppose, but I got gypped of a 15th track from Fragile State titled "Capture," which ain't on the band's two other CDs. :( The CD I got has only fourteen tracks, which is also sequenced differently from the orange-coloured disc.

Secondly, I have my Amazon stuff delivered to the office. This CD pretty much stayed at my desk as I've been listening to it frequently for the past five weeks. Well, I finally brought it home -- and guess what? Holy cow, when you can hear the bass on this CD, a number of the tracks sound even more outstanding! See, I keep the bass down low at work as to not disturb the neighbors, and I thought the music on this CD is a little bit too mellow for me while driving. It was commented about another Fragile State CD that they seem to subdue the bass a little, and the same seems true for this one too. However, on a good system that can play ~60Hz bass (a pretty low octave), the bass guitar work and kick drums really come alive on a number of tracks. Notably, "Venice Beach," "Best Days of Our Lives," and "Soul for Your Soul" all sounded incredibly different when compared between my office desktop speakers and home system. Perhaps this is a difference in the way studios are EQ-ed over in the UK versus the US?? I'm not sure, and I have to admit that the bass on some of the tracks sounded more muddier rather than punchier. But having now discovered the bass on several tracks of this CD, I'm going to listen to it more in my car.

    Album Description

This album consists of one cantata, two suites and eight spirituals in choral settings by nationally acclaimed composer/arranger Alice Parker. The cantata "Listen, Lord" for solo contralto, chorus, and jazz combo sets the text of the opening prayer from "God's Trombones", James Weldon Johnson's imaginative recreation of sermons remembered from his youth.
