Revenge is sweet on Joi's latest, a fierce, funky, groove-laden opus that should finally earn the Atlanta-based singer the recognition she so rightfully deserves. Her critically acclaimed (and now out-of-print) 1993 debut, Pendulum Vibe, and her never-released 1997 funk-rock masterpiece, Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome (widely circulated as a bootleg), fell victim to poor marketing and record label shutdowns, and despite her stint as lead vocalist in Lucy Pearl (replacing Dawn Robinson), mainstream success has eluded Joi thus far. But like any righteous diva would, she comes out swinging on Star Kitty's Revenge, packing the disc's 19 tracks and interludes with pure, unadulterated artistry. Mixing raunchy flair (à la Millie Jackson); cosmic, Parliament-style grooves; and her own brand of Dirty South élan, originals like the X-rated "Lick," "Techno Pimp," and "You're a W***e" should send listeners into blissful, funk-induced hazes, while the old-school R&B of "Missing You" and a cover of Chaka Khan and Rufus's "I'm a Woman" are sure to get booties shaking in all the right ways. --Sylvia W. A Mediocre Return at Best.......2006-11-01
Upon learning that Joi was a recorded artist I've searched high & low for her CDs. I've been a fan from way back, growing up in the same church with her in Nashville. Therefore, I've heard her voice in probably its most pure form. I have recognized Joi's vocals in Outkast songs. I watched Lucy Pearl on Jay Leno so I had some idea of the adult maturation of Joi's voice. Having written all of that, I couldn't wait for Star Kitty's Revenge. With the past difficulty in obtaining one of Joi's CDs I hoped this one would be the one that revealed what she could do since it seemingly reached more listeners. This CD just doesn't reveal the full breadth of what Joi can do with her voice. In first hearing the intro to "It's Your Life" I thought Joi was going to take us on an enjoyable mystical ride reminiscent of Deee Lite. However, beyond the intro I wasn't very interested in the song anymore and, admittedly, I fast forwarded to "17 Inches of Snow," which was a lyrical disappointment. There are too many unenjoyable flashbacks to 80's synthesized sounds on the CD: "Techno Pimp," "Crave" and "Lick." "Techno Pimp" is has got so much going on in the background vocally that it
About midway the CD onward there are some musical reminders about why old fans like me buy Joi's music. I enjoyed listening to her brief rendition of "Munchies for Your Love" with her now ex-husband Gipp. Her lyrical candor and vocal edginess that I've come to know in her adult voice is evident in "You're a ..." For a moment Star Kitty did show her return. My favorite track on the CD is "Missing You," which sounds as if it's a Prince cut. I was very into her rendition of "I'm a Woman." Joi's rendition of "Agnus Dei" reflects the angelic quality and the sense of somber reflection she can achieve. This is how I remember her from years ago. I think it was an appropriate prelude to "Jefferson St. Joe" in memory of her father who was one of the first African American NFL quarterbacks.

The Claws Are Not Out (...or, The Mothership Has Not Landed) .......2006-09-13
The song "Lick" (somewhat) features (and is produced by) singer Sleepy Brown (he sings backing vocals on and produces several tracks). Most of the songs are produced by Joi, Sleepy Brown, Dallas Austin, and Rafael Saadiq; one is produced by Andre Betts. She also remakes "I'm a Woman" ("I'm a woman / And I'm a backbone").
"Missing You" is one of the stronger tracks. The slow-tempo "Nicole" is a good "ghetto tale" type song. "Techno Pimp" is just a mess of dialog and jumbled vocals. And "17'' of Snow" is catchy, but it is repetitive: one verse and a hook repeat for over 5 minutes.
"Jefferson St. Joe" is about her father, NFL player Joe Gilliam, known as "Jefferson Street Joe" as a result of his time spent as a drug addict. It is not so much a song as a eulogy sung to music.
Millie Jackson she is not. I don't think she's on par with Jaguar Wright or Kelis; she is perhaps equitable to Leela James. Comparisons aside, she has some descent music on this album... it just isn't much to boast about (especially since there are only really 11 songs and so many annoying interludes). But she can sing.
Not sure how to rate this album-it is very creative but..........2006-08-20
I heard Joi's "Pendulum Vibe" and her more recent one, "Tennessee Slim is the Bomb" before I brought this one and I loved both, but "Star Kitty's Revenge" left me confused even after numerous listens. No tracks stand out to me and if I do find a song where I can get into the lyrics, the beats don't seem to go with the song, hense ruining the song. ("Lick" would be a prime example of that)
Joi has always been ahead of her time with her music in terms of production and lyrical concept. Maybe that is the issue plaguing this cd? I gave this cd 3 stars based on the fact that I can't give her 2 1/2 like I really want to and the fact that I can appreciate the fact that the music is creative and different coming for a soul/funk artist of this generation. But overall the concept is not coherent and the listening experience is not as enjoyable as I expected it to be based on her other work I heard from her first.
