The longtime staple of the Ubiquity family, Southern California's DJ Greyboy crashed the scene a decade ago as a leading purveyor of what was then called acid jazz. That term may have fallen quickly out of favor, but Greyboy's music never has. As the title implies, Greyboy offers a kaleidoscope of hip-hop beats and scratches, funk grooves, smooth R&B, and jazzy flourishes. Greyboy has always shown an amazing ability to weave these kinds of sounds together in cohesive fashion, and Soul Mosaic is certainly no exception. This time out, however, he's upped the ante by bringing in a wide range of singers, MCs, and turntablists, and by focusing more intently on creating stand-alone songs. Many of the best cuts are straight-up soul songs with full vocal arrangements and irresistible hooks--a bit of a departure from previous CDs, but no less effective. That it all flows together magnificently should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with this underappreciated talent. --Marc Greilsamer
Product Description
For the first time, Greyboy releases full vocal songs, adding a new soulful dimension to his music. Contains sold out singles "To Know You" and "Genevieve", and many new and exclusive cuts, including remixes by Paul Nice and Quantic.

The Real George Benson!.......2007-06-14
This one I missed though. Recorded in 1971, I recently learned that it's considered by many to be one of his best. The sticker label on the front of the CD proclaims it as "the legendary musician's most brilliant guitar recording. A breathtakingly burning finger-bursting jazz guitar classic!" and after just one listen I have to say I totally agree. There are no vocals at all on this one, not even Benson's trademark background scatting, which alone marks it out. The guitar playing is mesmerisingly interesting.
There were five tracks on the original album, produced by Creed Taylor and it features other legends like Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, with Clarence Palmer on organ, and Michael Cameron & Albert Nicholson on percussion. This (probably remastered) reissue has three extra tracks; alternate takes of "All Clear", "Ode To A Kudu" and "Somewhere In The East". These alternate takes are not quite as tight are the original versions and lean towards the smoother jazz Benson was to later become renowned for. No surprise there, I suppose.
I've always loved Benson's guitar improvisations but some of the stuff he does here - on the Bonfa/Duble tune "The Gentle Rain" and the exotic, worldly "Somewhere In The East" especially - is just crazy. The percussion on the tune is almost worth the price of the CD all on its own. "All Clear" has been one of my favourite tracks by Benson for the longest time ever since a friend put it in a compilation tape for me back in the old days. It's only recently I decided to find the album the song came from. I may have left it rather late but better late than never, no?
If you ever wanted to have an idea of how George Benson might have turned out if he hadn't tried to be a jazz guitarist AND a pop singer at the same time, this CD is definitely worth checking out. Personally, I love every minute of it.

The first of their three-album Art Official Intelligence series, Mosaic Thump is a likable album, full of inspired moments. It's also the closest thing De La Soul have ever come to making a less-than-stunning LP. Maybe it's the contemporary production style that weakens songs like "U Can Do" and "I C Ya'll." Maybe it's the (far too) many cameos by bigwigs like Busta Rhymes and Redman and not enough by dark-horse newcomers like Indeed (who comes off nice on "Set the Mood"). De La haven't muzzled their intellectual bite on songs like "Declaration" and "View," and they can still get that rear in rotation with groovers like "With Me," and the funkalistic "Thru Ya City." But where they once left no doubt as to their status as hip-hop's brightest and most innovative group, De La now seem less extraordinary and more merely mortal. --Oliver WangAlbum Description

Originality is not a major theme here, especially with a computer generated female narrator; identical to that used by A Tribe Called Quest: Midnight Marauders. Along with other recognisable Bass lines and samples.
However the album does "shine" with tracks like "Thru Ya City", "Set The Mood" feat. Indeed and "With Me".
However, these good efforts are overshadowed by tracks including the commercialised Redman, Busta Rhymes and even the likes of The Beastie Boys: which most definitely puts a slight downer on the album as a whole.
Not a great album, but not a bad album and probably worth a listen if you really don't have any other good music to buy.

Customer Reviews:
A collection of Patton's rare groove albums.......2006-12-14
The set contains tracks from 5 albums recorded for blue note records which are " Along came John, The way I feel, Oh baby, That certain feeling and Understanding". On all the albums Patton was on top of his game, his playing was fluid with the backing of cats like Harold Vick, Ben Dixon, Grant Green and Blue Mitchell amongst other great artists. The set contains 3 CD's comprising 29 tracks, the quality of the remastered music is superb on almost all the tracks except on 1 or 2 tracks where there are minor glitches which are acknowledged in the infrmation booklet, the information booklet contains essays, discography as well as each album session details, the quality of CD is apparently, materially different from the quality of well established jazz labels, this observation is based on the look and feel of the CD but be that as it may be,I encourage John Patton lovers to buy this CD because it contains some of the the best albums by the artist, its a collector's item
