Soundtrack buffs may know that this score to director Bertrand Tavernier's alluring jazz period piece inexplicably won the 1986 Oscar for best soundtrack instead of Morricone and his rich, enduring music for The Mission. That injustice aside, it remains a worthy collage of vintage jazz standards, new material, and contemporary performers, as filtered through the spirit of the story's main character (an amalgam of Bud Powell and Lester Young) and the '50s Paris jazz scene. It's also a tribute to Round Midnight musical director Herbie Hancock, with his crucial understanding that jazz--and especially bebop--can never stand on tradition, lest it lose its very reason for being. Thus he lets then-newcomer Bobby McFerrin loose on Monk's moody title track, gives vet Chet Baker's horn and voice a warm turn in the spotlight on "Fair Weather," and allows Lonette McKee and star Dexter Gordon to infuse Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" with some languorous, subtly sexual heat. A great jazz score.......2006-07-01

I'm not so keen on jazz music; however, I must say that this album is excellent, probably the second best of its kind after the all-time classic soundtrack for "Ascenseur Pour L'Echauffaud" ("Elevator to the Gallows"), one of the masterpieces by Louis Malle. The music here is certainly high class material: atmospheric, suggestive and wonderfully interpreted. If you're a jazz buff and haven't heard it yet, be sure that you've missed half of your life, so GET IT RIGHT AWAY!

This album is the best!!!!!.......2006-06-15

I've never seen the movie and really, I don't have to. I love this album. I thought that it was very nicely done and it is so perfect. But really, it was the song "Round Midnight" with Bobby McFerrin that caught my ear. Listening to him singing that muted trumpet is sooo heavenly. So, I had to find this album if only to hear this song. It was a real treat that I got the other songs as well. "Fair Weather" by Chet Baker is another favorite of mine. I would urge any jazz lover to pick this album up. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.

JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT: A SOUNDTRACK.......2005-05-26

This is an Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD. The DVD of the movie is available but I would start here first. Maybe because one doesn't need to have the story told to you on wide screen and dolby sound. This CD is "intimate". Like the "Blue Note" it resonates lonesome nights in distant foreign places where the echo of the night is in Dexter Gordon's lingering Sax wail. Then perhaps none of that is important. Perhaps it's the compilation of so many jazz voices all in this one CD. While making this movie, Warner Bro could have bought rights to the Blue Note records as background. But it was important to give a fresh sound to the challenge of making a film about jazz. Warners turned to Herbie Hancock to develop the music background and Dexter Gordon to write compositions for the film. They did so beautifully without loosing the essential flavor or sense of place and time depicted in the film: Paris and the Fifties. If your interest is to develop or explore jazz music from the early 50s, here's your opportunity. Central to the background are musicians of the caliber of Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hucherson, Bobby McFerrin, Lonette McKee, John McLaughlin, Pierre Michelot, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Tony Williams. You can rent or buy the DVD. This CD will help you soak up that atmosphere now lost from places like the "Blue Note". In this CD you will hear the echo of the strains of 50s jazz normally heard "back then and round midnight". Listen to "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Una Noche Con Francis" and your heart will be lost. ps: I have the original vinyl LP version of "Round Midnight" and somehow, scratches and all, it's almost better heard this way.

A great soundtrack.......2005-03-28

This soundtrack is an attempt by Herbie Hancock and his line-up of excellent jazz performers to evoke the jazz scene of Paris in the 50s. I have no way to judge how successful they were since I wasn't conceived until '63 and have never been to France, but I can and will testify that they have produced an enduring recording that I have never tired of in the many years that I have been listening to it. Bobby McFerrin demonstrates that he is much more than "Don't Worry Be Happy" as he does an amazing job of evoking a horn with his voice on the title track. "Chan's Song" and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" also leap to mind, but there really isn't a single clinker in the bunch.

A Christmas Trip Around The World.......2004-12-01

When it comes to singing in many languages, Nana Mouskouri is among the best. This album covers beautiful carols in French, English, Greek, German, Italian, and Latin. Her clear voice and perfect diction give a wonderful glimpse into the traditional Christmas songs of many lands. I especially enjoyed hearing "Kalin Iméran" - it's not easy to find Greek carols and this one is excellent.

A truly international album from a classy singer.......2003-11-16

Nana is a huge star in mainland Europe with a string of hit singles in several countries. She only had one big hit in Britain but her albums have always enjoyed healthy UK sales. I don't know the extent of her following in America but this Christmas album was finally given an American release in 2003 to coincide with a tour. Nana sings in several different languages and you can hear some of them on this collection, including English, French, German and Greek.

The only songs here that Nana sings in English are Deck the halls, O come all ye faithful, Hark the herald angels sing, White Christmas, God rest ye merry gentlemen, All through the night and Lullaby.

Five songs are taken from an album of German Christmas songs, including Stille nacht heilage nacht (Silent night), and O tannenbaum (O Christmas tree).

Nana sings Minuet Chretien (O holy night) and L'enfant au tambour (Little drummer boy) both in French. Ave Maria is here as well but I haven't worked out in which language. I recognize some other songs here from the tune, but there are plenty of high quality songs that I don't recognize at all (or only recognize from other foreign language recordings).

I have the French edition of this album, which has the title Les plus beaux Noels du monde, but the track listing and front cover artwork is the same as the American edition.

Frankly, it doesn't matter what language Nana sings in - if you enjoy any of her music, you'll love this album.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-29

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1645-1704) was the most distinguished French religious composer of his era. His output includes eleven Masses and numerous motets, psalms and oratorios, many of them extended works rich in texture, color and harmony, and contrpuntally resourceful. Melodically he derived a distinctive style, imposing French embelishments and phrase structure on a basically Italian idiom. His 30 or so theater pieces reveal wit and facility.
However, he is still in danger of being known for only one or two works, the famous 'Te Deum in D ' and the delightful 'Messe de Minuit' which are the selections on this disc.
This recording has two different dates and conductors that are 10 years apart. The 'Te Deum' was recorded in 1978 under the leadership of Sir Philip Ledger and the 'Minuit' was recorded in 1967 under the direction of Sir David Willcocks. The performance has a different line-up of soloists, but they are all quite excellent and perform very skillfully. The King's College Choir always sings with perfection and really it would be very difficult to hear that there are two different groups except for the different soloists. This music is very pleasant and sounds almost secular at times, and it is very easy to enjoy.

A choral masterpiece of baroque music.......2007-01-09

I've known about the Charpentier Te Deum since I bought an old vinyl copy in the mid 1960s when I was a college student. This Te Deum is one of the towering masterpieces of the baroque. It is energetic, colorful and filled with the lavish orchestration Charpentier is known for. I have in my collection around 10 Te Deums by baroque composers, and the Charpentier has always been my favorite. The recording here is excellent, and the fine ensemble led by Christopher Keyte is right on with the pacing. A superb masterpiece -- well done by all.

Absolutely Amazing Rhythm.......2005-07-05

I'm relatively new to Mali music, but this is the most incredible rhythmic guitar sound I have yet to encounter. The rifs are very tight and melodic. Mama Sissoko is phenomenally talented relative to today's popular artists in the U.S. Recommend "Massane Cisse" & "Jarabi Muso" although the entire album is wickedly awesome.

Mama Sissoko's Soleil de Miniut is a must buy!
This is one of those rare albums you can listen to 1000 times and still find something fresh in the music. The underlying interlocking guitar parts are very hypnotic and will surely lull the listener into a trance. This album is great for new comers and old fans of African Music.

close to brilliant.......2003-05-06

This could be the best album I bought in the last few years.
I think there must be a lotta people out there who likes african music but less know mama sisoko.I must admit that I get to know this music by accident.
If you think specialist in all styles by Baobab is a good album you also love this one wich is maybe even better.
Order it now....Do yourself a favor....

A Terrific CD!!!.......2002-02-27

This is a terrific CD. The music is glorious and the performance is perfect. I wouldn't trade this CD for anything. I'm a big fan of Handel's Messiah and Bach's sacred choral works. These works by Charpentier -- in particular, the "Messe de Minuit" -- are right up there with those works, in my humble estimation. The more I listen to the CD -- and I have listened to it at least 20 times since I bought it last month -- the more I enjoy it. I'm particularly impressed by the performance. The recorders and other woodwinds sound great, and the choir is superb. I highly recommend this CD!

Well, at the time of writing this review the CD is not available, so I can't say anything about the recording. If its anything like the other wonderful Les Arts performances you won't be disappointed. Last night I went a Les Arts concert when they performed these great pieces. It was by far the best performance that I have been to. It was beautiful and touching and my only regret is that I didn't share the expirience with more family and friends than I did. This is wonderful music, and a great introduction to the French baroque. You must buy this record, it will change the way you listen to music. What a wonderful Advent expirience!

Minus 8... One of the world's greatest!.......2004-07-11

Let's chat about what a real artist (Robert Jan Meyer aka Minus 8) can do with great, sublime, original music. A great recording should be an effortless picture that the heart hears now and the mind contemplates later. Minuit opens up pathways that most downtempo albums dream of. Give this CD to your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, dad, mother, to your kids or a special friend. Anyone who can hear will thank you for this reward.

As a side note I have played this album a few hundred times (on my radio show) and I still get chills when the track White appears.

I sincerely hope is that Minus 8 continues his musical career with fresh work for all of us to enjoy.

Flawless masterpiece.......2003-12-26

This is definitely one of the most consistent albums i've heard in recent times. I agree fully with both previous reviewers....every track has a hook, the man just doesnt run out of ways to move you...you think 'surely there's a weak spot on the album'...only to find that there isnt. The cover art [sadly omitted from this website, lol!], a lounge chair in an apartment over a moonlit city, sums up the sendiments of this album perfectly. There isnt enough music around like this!

Fantástico Electronica Bossa Nova.......2002-10-24

This is an incredible CD! I love Elysian Fields (by Minus 8) but this one is different. A little more mellow than Elysian Fields. UNBELIEVABLE! I'm just sitting here listening to it. Every song has a hook (or hooks) that grabs you. And all have a great electronic bossa nova beat. And that's EVERY song -- a rare achievement. This is too pretty. This is too upbeat to call "lounge" music -- it's electronica bossa nova perfecto!

not just another boss-a-troniq release! Sounds quite fresh for a Lounge, Break'n'bossa and all Brazilectro lover! It will go to my collection and if you like jazzy, downtempo Brasilian beats it's just the record you should listen to. Smooth and catchy but not popular music, moving from acustic to electronic sound. Hope that somebody who knows anything about this record writes a review with all the important data. For me it's just an extraordinary one.

A warm, joyful baroque Christmas celebration.......2004-12-07

The beautiful, varied, and well-chosen repertoire on this disc will keep you returning to it season after season. We start with a 17th-cantury French NOEL, lovingly and simply rendered a cappella by Richard Duguay. There follow some more French carols in instrumental arrangements by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, two traditional plainchants, some sumptuous madrigal-style pieces by Schein and Monteverdi, Purcell's florid and expressive vocal monologue for the Virgin Mary, and finally the most substantial piece on the disc: Charpentier's Christmas Midnight Mass, a very interesting work based on French carol themes. The performances by the Boston camerata are warm and vibrant. This early baroque Christmas disc is a real winner.

An excellent performance.......2000-09-18

This cd is the Baroque equivalent of the Medieval and Renaissance Christmas albums of the Boston Camerata. It has the least varied repetoire, in part because of the Charpentier Mass - Messe de Minuit sur des Airs de Noel, a work well worth having in its entirety. There are two pieces that are chant and a marvelous piece from Germany in an Italian style - Nun Jauchzet mit Hellem Ton - to which the notes say there are two sets of words, the one recorded here in praise of the Christmas festival, the other celebrating the amorous delights of nymphs. With such a delightful piece of trivia, how could the cd fail?

While the Boston Camerata gives its normal skilled performance, they are not as spectacular as they are on earlier music. They still are among the better interpreters of Baroque music, but it is not their speciality.

This is an excellent Christmas cd worthy of being in any collection.

An old favorite of mine updated.......2007-07-08

Gottschalk wrote a lot of very pleasing and colorful if not very deep piano music. Deep has its place, but not every moment is a Bach organ moment, and this is wonderful music when you want to relax to something light. Gottschalk drew on African American and American Folk influences as well as his formal training in Paris to produce a new sound for the mid nineteenth century. Not really classical, but not yet with the structure or sophistication of the later rag and jazz, it's really just Gottschalk. I first encountered Amiram Rigai playing this music years ago on a Musical Heritage Society cassette. A lot of pianists have done credible recordings of Gottschalk, but to me this is how his pieces should sound. This is a terrific CD.

Danger Will Robinson, Danger..........2002-03-20

This disc is well recorded and well played but it is not Charpentier. Rather, it is a disc of arrangements of Charpentier done by Kevin Mallon of the Aradia Ensemble. The Aradia Ensemble is a period instrument group, so one expects authenticity. One does not find it, however.

What I find most troubling is that Naxos did not feel the need to inform its potential consumers (somewhere on the outside of the package) that these discs are inauthentic adaptations. All they would have needed to do is list the composer as Charpentier-Mallon or to note that Mallon arranged and adapted these pieces adding new instrumentation and, in some instances, expanding the texts.

Why do record companies continue to issue product in this way? Not only is it historically perverse, it is unethical. Anyway, what I have learned from all this is that you stay with those who brought you, at least in this repertoire. In other words, stay away from the nouveau Stokowskian perversions of Mallon and stick with Christie and Minkowski.
