Milkshake, the duo of Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl (alums of the pop/rock act Love Riot), pours heart and soul into Bottle of Sunshine, and kids ages one to six will slurp it up the same way they did Happy Songs, Milkshake's harmony-thick debut. Mathews's pleasant voice (reminiscent of Cowboy Junkies's Margo Timmons' in its sleepy, drifty, peacefulness), and a light acoustic touch earns this act a spot in the cool kids' musicians category. Parents will love Sunshine for its pared-down folk/rock sound, and kids will appreciate a lack of shyness when it comes to getting silly. For parents, some children's records make the drone of a blender seem a preferable listening experience. In the span of two super-smooth discs, Milkshake manages to reverse all that. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Well, true to the phrase "Good things take time," two years after the release of our 2002 debut CD Happy Songs, we present Bottle Of Sunshine. The disc offers fifteen brand new Milkshake originals the whole family can groove to. You'll also find lots of variety here, although most of the songs still live in the rock genre. We recorded "ABC Of Me" live in the studio with a jazz combo. It's a new take on the Alphabet Song, and each letter stands for some quality or thing that reminds us of how great we are, and how wonderful childhood is. "Boom Boom" turned into a country rock song as we added fiddle and banjo and a "yee-haa". There's a doo-wop tinged song about having fun in the water called "Woo-Woo." There are some totally acoustic songs ("Bluebird" and "Milkshake!") and some very electrified, all-out rock songs ("School" and "Space Song"). But every song is memorable. And each one was great fun to record.

British children's author/illustrator Alexis Deacon created the cover art for Bottle of Sunshine, along with illustrations for the 16-page booklet accompanying the CD. Please look for his wonderful children's books "Slow Loris" and "Beegu," both published by Kane Publishers, NY.

Bottle of Sunshine also contains a bonus: three Milkshake music videos of songs from Happy Songs. Two of these, "Fingers & Toes" and "Tall", are fully animated. The third, "Happy Song", is a live action video with some animation sprinkled here and there.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cd!.......2007-07-18

I bought this cd after seeing a Milkshake video on PBS. We have had it over a year and still listen to it every week. It is so full of energy and fun. It makes you want to get up and dance. Adults can even tolerate listening to it in the car. I recently purchased Milkshake's cd "Play!" also, but it is not as enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-10

I love this CD-my son can listen to it over and over and over again. One of their best!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining .......2007-01-06

From preschoolers to first graders, "Bottle Of Sunshine" will prove a 'kid friendly' favorite with its toe-tapping tunes, hand-clapping rhythms, and sing-along lyrics flawlessly delivered by Milkshake (singer Lisa Mathews and guitarist Mikel Ghel) with their usual flair and easy expertise. The fifteen superbly presented and impressively recorded pieces comprising this outstanding and highly recommended CD album for children include: Bluebird; School; Woo-Woo; Milkshake!; Boom, Boom; ABC of Me; Space Song; Book of Dreams; Jump; Smile; Ms. R&R; Rainy Day; One Wish; Sleepytown; and the title piece, Bottle of Sunshine. This is a wonderfully entertaining and sure to be kid-pleasing addition to any family, preschool, daycare center, elementary school, or community library CD music collection for children. Also highly recommended is Milkshake's other kid's CD, "Play!" which features songs about kids having fun playing baseball, bowling, pretending, playing music, having parades, planting a garden, and more!

5 out of 5 stars Fun... and won't dull your brain........2006-11-05

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old daughter after hearing the ABC song at library storytime. She has some definite favorites and asks for them as soon as we get in the car. The songs are cheerful, clever and fun to dance/sing along with. We recently ordered another copy as a gift for a 5 year old. She LOVES it too!
Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Music Grownups can enjoy with their kids!.......2005-11-16

Not only do my kids love the music, but I do too!! We've seen them live and they're awesome. Lisa has so much energy and dances around in her "tutu" and those "crazy tights" and Mikel is so awesome with the kids. They are talented musicians who make kids music fun for everyone. Watch them on Noggin - Jack's Music Show. The videos are lively and fun! I hope they'll make a DVD of the videos, including the one's on their web site.

Album Description

Contemporary, fun, educational and heartwarming, Milkshake's debut recording "Happy Songs" is a potpourri of activity songs, upbeat inspirational rock songs and lullabies released on Deck Party Music. Milkshake's original songs are based in the pop-rock genre, and influenced by both the years spent performing tuneful, melodic music in their rock band alter ego Love Riot, and the classic sounds of great groups like the Beatles.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2006-08-05

One of my daughter's friends 'really' introduced us to Milkshake. I'm surprised we didn't put 2+2 together since we are ardent XM Kid listeners and they play a lot of songs from Milkshake. I guess for some reason we got them mixed up with Scribble Monster. Anyway, we realized that "Happy Songs" was their song and bought this CD and the newer one too.

Overall, the music is top notch. The girls dance to it and enjoy it. I like the newer CD the best, but this one is very good too.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for Kids and Parent's too.......2006-03-23

I'm not a fan of music for kids that parent's can't enjoy as well: case in point being anything by Barney. Milkshake is lots of fun. My kids (2, 5 and 7) always request "Scared" which they refer to as "the Scary song." I particularly enjoy "Goodnight Moon," and yes, it does reference the book. "Fingers & Toes" is lots of happy, peppy fun about hands and feet and counting! I highly recommend it for fun at home and in the car!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST- HAVE!.......2006-03-10

My daughter is addicted to both Milkshake albums and I recommend them both highly. Really fun lyrics with fanciful sound effects (birds tweeting, bells ringing, etc). I find that they are the first albums that I reach for as well. Lisa Mattthews has a "Sheryl Crowe"-like sound which is refreshingly contemporary for kids music.

5 out of 5 stars Come on along, buy some Happy Songs!!!.......2005-01-13

This album is the perfect mix for families. Notice I didn't say "for KIDS", I said for FAMILIES!! As an avid music listener, I was dreading having kids and having to listen to that purple dinosaur or other saccharine aural pacifiers, but Milkshake has saved my ears (halleluyah!). My 2.6 year old LOVES both albums and I enjoy listening to them too. Happy Songs is the perfect blend of hit songs (the title track has graced the XMKids Top Thirteen Under Thirteen for a good long time), silly songs (Anyone for some yummy critter fritters in "Breakfast Time"?) and good quality melodies that rival the likes of Jewel and Ani DiFranco. Do yourself and your kids a favor, buy both Milkshake CD's, force them to listen to them once through and you'll be chucking those dinosaur CD's out the window [ED: Author does NOT condone littering] in no time at all.

5 out of 5 stars Happy songs cd by Milkshake.......2004-11-04

I have both of Milkshake's cd's, Happy Songs and the new one, Bottle of Sunshine, and I love them. My four year old is constantly singing and dancing to them, and has been enjoying Milkshake since she was two. I, too, know all of the words to the songs, and enjoy listening to them (unlike some other children's music which is not as pleasing to the ears of parents). I highly recommend both cd's.

This cd is okay, but we (myself, my 2 year old twin girls, and my 11 year old son) love Milkshake's "Bottle of Sunshine" album, which has a lot more energy.

5 out of 5 stars Milkshake Rocks!.......2007-05-17

We love this CD! I have a four-year old aspiring rockstar girl who dances & sings her heart out with this music. I like it because there are no questionable lyrics but there is still a rock music flavor to each song.

5 out of 5 stars It's a hit! Milkshake gets the whole family grooving..........2007-04-07

Play highlights on Milkshake's positive energy and charm. Turn it on and you'll turn it up- Milkshake gets the whole family grooving, hopping and singing along together. Any of the Milkshake albums, especially Play, is an appropriate gift for any child or young family interested in music. It's a hit!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pop.......2003-06-21

Mark Bacino returns with more pure pop... His songs would not sound out of place on mid-70's AM radio. Obvious influences are The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Tod Rundgren, Elton John...

But he has a 90's sheen, with similarities to Jellyfish, Ben Folds, Kristian Hoffman and David Mead.

Hilariously cheesy, but that's what makes it so good. "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.." Laugh out loud funny but a good song.

When I first heard this song on much video dance I had to download it right away, cuz it sounded amazing. I downloaded the instrumental and I just went nuts! The music was so hardcore. I have new favourite songs now. I might have overplayed that one, but...oh well. Eventually I bought the whole album.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2005-02-05

the beats on this are tight by The Neptunes and the song is ok, and thats all I have to say about that

this song 'milkshake' is.... great..... just inuendo everywhere in this single...produced by the neptunes this single reached number 2 in the top 200...launced her already know carrer.

'milkshake' is kind of different... not your typical pop/r&b song. the video is not all that great BUT the song makes the video awesome...

the remixes are alright but nothing beats the original....this single LP is great if you like the original but the remixs are not all that.

      Album Description

Remember AM Radio? Milkshake Jones Does... They were the days when every song was your favorite and you couldn't wait to hear what tune the DJ was going to spin next.

The Paisley Pop Label and Misguided Efforts Recordings are pleased to present Milkshake Jones, a Harrisburg, Pa.,-based combo that hearkens back to the heyday of the AM band while creating a sound uniquely its own.

Who do they sound like? We hate to make comparisons -- but think Squeeze meeting Uncle Tupelo in The Beatles' basement. That's a good place to start.

From the breezy pop of the lead track "Glow," to the rollicking "Miracle Plain," and the alt.country of "Stop Me From Falling" (a collaboration with Windbreakers' songwriter Tim Lee) the band effortlessly straddles styles to create a modern record that evokes the best of classic pop songcraft.

In just over a year together, Milkshake Jones has become a regular fixture on stages across Central Pennsylvania. The band has toured North Carolina, sharing the bill with such power-pop stalwarts as The Shazam and Tar Heel legend Mitch Easter. They've also made periodic forays into Philadelphia -- most recently as a featured act in the respected International Pop Overthrow Festival.

And now, with the release of its debut CD, the rest of the world will find out what a well-chosen elite has known for a while-- this is a combo to be reckoned with. Why not share in the secret?

WOULD SOUND GOOD ON A MIX TAPE WITH: The Bats, Uncle Tupelo, Squeeze, The Verlaines, Straitjacket Fits

Personnel includes: Kelis, Terrar, Markita, Marc Dorsey, N.E.R.D., Justin Vince; Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo (various instruments). Recorded at Mastersound Recording Studios and Windmark Recordings, Virginia Beach, Virginia. If the name Kelis doesn't instantly ring a bell, there's a good chance you've still heard her. For one, you may have heard her sweetly defiant voice singing "hey, I said hey, baby I got your money, dont'cha worry" on ODB's obnoxiously catchy hit "I Got Your Money." Then there's the voice all over the radio screaming "I hate you so much right now....aaaargh," which is also Kelis on the lead single from KALEIDOSCOPE, "Caught Out There." Think Mary J.Blige set slightly askew and injected with a touch of Billie Holiday and you can begin to imagine the sound of Kelis on her delightful debut. Her greatest asset is her flexible, multipurpose voice, which shifts from smooth and sultry to a scream with swift efficiency on "Caught Out There," and can range from sweet and sensual on the trip-hoppy "Suspended" to singsong simplicity on "Game Show." On songs like "Game Show," she recalls Stevie Wonder in his '70s heyday with her ability to twist notes around hooks with expert precision--every vocal turn has its place and washes over your body as sweet as Ohio Player honey. Kelis introduces herself as a chanteuse to be reckoned with on KALEIDOSCOPE.

        5 out of 5 stars Don't judge a CD by its cover.......2006-06-26

2003 was a year with really good music. It was also the year that I turned 15 and I finished the junior high school. I had some issues with myself and after with some rapper wannabes already in the High School because of some differences (You Can Ask). They made me hate on Hip-Hop temporally.
At late 2003 and early 2004 some new-for-me artists dropped hot singles such "Right Thurr", "Baby Boy", "Gangsta Nation"... But was "Milkshake", one of the songs that detonated my envy to the rappers.
At first I hated it. I thought Kelis was talentless, ugly and bad. I first rated the song as odious, ridiculous and bad. Now I love it and I love her. (Thanks to "Trick Me")
"Milkshake" is a song that mixes Hip-Hop, R&B and a bit of Neo-Soul. With double-sensed lyrics and a catchy chorus. This was the song that made Kelis famous worldwide.
It took me only a few weeks after I bought the album (August 2004) to accept that the song is a classic and some of the best of 2003.
The seductive cover of the CD Single has Kelis sitting down on a big Milkshake, she looks sexy and beautiful.
This one has 4 tracks: Both the main version of "Milkshake" and the instrumental, it also includes snippets from "Trick Me" and "Protect my heart".
The bad thing is that it doesn't include remixes or unreleased tracks
All in all, this is a deluxe item, it'll become rare in a few years.
