Live on Brighton Beach [Explicit Lyrics] [Live]

On a crystal clear English summer's evening in 2001, Norman Cook played a celebrated DJ set in front of an estimated 30,000 loved-up Brightonians, generating two hours of typically hedonistic party mayhem. It's these two hours--or, at least, an edited version of them--that make up Cook's first mix album in ages and a perfect souvenir of the night now known as "Normstock." Soundwise, the album sees Senor Fatboy doing what he does best--mashing up thumping dance floor favorites with a sweat-drenched party panache. Those expecting classic big beat belters are in for a shock, though, since Mr. Slim is more into straight-up house and techno these days--albeit with a party twist. So, we get some of 2001's biggest records--Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?," Raven Maze's "The Real Life," a couple from Santos--alongside a smattering of classics (Leftfield's "Phat Planet," an anthemic version of Underworld's "Born Slippy") and the off Fatboy number to keep the regulars happy. The result is a hot, sweaty, grimy mix that captures the sound and feel of Norman Cook's DJ sets, even if it does feel a touch out of date. --Matt Anniss

4 out of 5 stars Really awesome, great CD.......2004-05-13

I bought this CD 5 months ago in an impulse. I just saw it on the shelf, and since I had recently started to love electronic music and had heard so much about Fatboy Slim,, I decided to buy it and try out my musical interest. The first impression I had wasn't a very good one, but that was before I actually developped my love for electronic music. However, after some days, some songs started to make me move, and i realised that the CD was awesome. The beginning is excellent, with the hybrid Born Slippy/Right here, Right now, which is the perfect opening for this kind of CD, it gives you the impression that you should get ready. Then follows Austin's Groove which is one of my favorites, among The Groovy Thang, The Real Life (I love that one) and Where's your head at?. I would have taken some songs out of the list, but none of them are bad at all; it simply makes perfect harmony. I think that the moment after Where's your head at? where the police start chasing people off the water should have taken out, and i would also complain about the pops and clicks in the CD, but that's because it's a live recording off vynil and can't be avoided. I seriously recommend this CD, because I don't regret at all having bought it, and it's always on top of my CD stack.

2 out of 5 stars Quit your day job, Norman........2004-01-06

Put 35,000 people on a beach. Have a celebrity DJ play music at them for an hour. Release the result as a new album.

This album isn't really anything like any of Fatboy Slim's other live sets - in that it's not actually very good. It starts off with a nice, slow mix of Born slippy, progressing into a nicely funky remix of Right here, right now... and goes downhill from there. Vocal samples that are louder than the music playing are randomly dropped into the mix and repeated for minutes at a time, the sound stops entirely for ten minutes or so while Norman mumbles things at the crowd ("get the hell away from the water!"), and half of what's played seems to be either from Halfway between the gutter and the stars or You've come a long way, baby.

However, I don't like Fatboy Slim all that much. His "K-Roc solid state" mix is a better example of what he's capable of.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-02-24

Although the music style has changed a bit,(more house) it still is a great album by an excellente DJ.

2 out of 5 stars guys like this should stay in the studio.......2005-03-17

people like mr. cook are at their best when they have a studio at their disposal and their worst when they have to perform live with no over-dubbing or gimmicks. i was fortunate enough to be given this disc by industry insiders and if i'd spent my own money on it, i'd have been severely disappointed.

the sleeve has all the pap you'd expect from label promoters, talking about how unbelievable and amazing the night of spinning was; but all i can think is, "have you actually *listened* to this disc?"

it's not great. it's not even that interesting.

i heard the fatboy spin live once, and my reaction to that performance is the same as this: if he works on something in a studio, and takes months to do it, he's one of the best in the world.

with two turntables live, he's just another hack.

2 out of 5 stars Just Buy Simple Minds.......2002-05-07

This is the live album of a TV show of a free performance that DJ Norman Cook threw for 40,000 people on Brighton's uncomfortable pebble beach in July 2001. Since dance music at its best is holiday music and most English people have deserted England's gray shores for the balmier nights of the Mediterranean, Ibiza would have been the natural place to record this kind of event, but that would have been too obvious. Setting it in a decayed Regency town lends an extra twist.

Only 3 of the 14 tracks have some compositional input by Fatboy, and as with his studio albums, this mainly consists of deft sampling rather than any real writing. In short, Cook knows how to get other people to do his work for him.

The standout track is "The Real Life," and though we should be thankful to Norm for playing and mixing it a bit and to Raven Maize for 'creating' the track, about 80% of the song basically consists of samples from a great 1981 Simple Minds track (title deleted by Amazon for some obscure reason), which sounds even better than the watered-down version here.

4 out of 5 stars "Great live gig".......2002-04-29

Now this is how a live recording should be. None of that compilation-from-different-performances bull - but just one night, one set and 30,000 people, with all the perfections and mistakes. Many know that Fatboy Slim is up there with Radiohead, U2 and System of a Down in terms of great live gigs, but unlike most of his performances, his appearance at Bright Beach saw him, uncharacteristically, playing not only favorites like "Star 69" and "Sunset (Bird Of Prey), but some Norman Cook's favorite techno tunes from the `90s, including his renditions of tracks by Basement Jaxx, Santos, Underworld, Letfield and Raven Maize amongst others. Opening with a shortened, slower version of the Trainspotting classic "Born Slippy", the album kicks into full gear with a more upbeat rendering of the DJ's own "Right Here Right Now" that obviously got the crowd going quite a bit. Cook proceeds to perform a similar act throughout the rest of the album, redefining celebrated DJs' greatest hits in his own innovative way. There really isn't much of a track definition in terms of different tunes, with numerous songs overlapping each other. Notably, a tune like "Where's Your Head At?" is listed on the back as being track eight, but can be heard more evidently on track's seven and nine, making the CD more suited to a party situation rather than you just sitting at home with your headphones on. If you're a fan of Fatboy Slim - and we don't mean You've Come A Long Way Baby - then you'll surely find some great aspects in this live recording. If you're only preference to the DJ is "Rockefeller Skank" then we recommend that you stick to listening to J-Lo.

5 out of 5 stars Fatboy Slim does it again.......2002-04-18

ok, i just got this CD in the mail today & it rocks. Norman Cook rocks the house yet again. The only downside to this CD (which is easily fixed) is that the track selection is wrong. Luckiny, within the liner notes are some sub-liner notes w/the real track listing written in both English & Japanese (i think). This is truly a Fatboy Slim CD worth getting, and its live so that makes it so much better right there. I was hoping tho, that the cops wouldnt have stopped the music on Basement Jaxx's "Where's your head at" cuz i love that song. Anyway, dont ponder over wheather on not you should get this b/c you definately should, you will be happy that youve made an excellent decision.

4 out of 5 stars real life live mix it is!.......2002-03-15

Well, this is the first official live release for Mr. Cook. It is released on his own label - Southern Fried, and is a portion of the show from Brighton Beach held during the summer of 2001. Unfortunately this release does have it's low points. First of all, and maybe I'm just picky but, the tracklist is incorrect listing some tracks as individual tracks despite the fact that they are not (Note: the CDDB/Gracenote entry for this recording is also wrong.). During the middle of the set, the music stops for a public safety announcement (it seems the tide was coming in but the crowd wasn't moving). Despite these set backs the set is good. While I don't appreciate all of the tracks, particularly his own (Star 69, Sunset) there are some killers (Jark Prongo, The Clumps, Love Tattoo). I gave this disc a 4 out of 5 because of the tracklist errors and the inclusion of some less than impressive tracks.
