Customer Reviews:
THIS DAME CAN SING!..........2004-03-09
Singing a collection of folk songs and ballads of Great Britain, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa puts her glorious soprano to interpreting these simple favorites. As a result, an astonishing recording has emerged for those who favor folk songs. Simply arranged and accompanied by members of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as by the Medici String Quartet, the songs resonate with the mark of Dame Kanawa upon them, making them more memorable than ever.
The use of a small orchestra and the prominence of the harp is most effective, rendering the accompaniment an appropriate backdrop for the most important instrument of all in this recording, the magnificent voice of Dame Kanawa. There are fifteen glorious tracks on this cd that are sure to delight the discerning listener, particularly those who are attuned to the folk tradition in music. My particular favorites are "Early One Morning", "Annie Laurie", "Greensleeves", and "Danny Boy".
British Folk Songs And Ballads Sung by Dame Kiri.......2003-01-26
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa presented to her listeners with 'Danny Boy (Folk Songs & Ballads)' a wonderful collection of folk songs and ballads from the British Isles. I've always loved folk songs and the tracks of which this album is comprised are very well loved and in all cases classics, whether they are credited to anonymous composers or not. All of these songs appeal directly to the listeners's ear, at least this is certainly valid in my case as these songs forever dwell in a corner of my heart. Dame Kiri's beautiful, lyrical soprano is perfectly suited to these simple and appealing songs and on this album she is in truly glorious voice. With tenderness, humour, warmth Dame Kiri delivers a beautiful, superb and poetical performance of these songs. Effortlessly she brings out every shade and nuance of these songs. The members of the National Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Douglas Gamley and The Medici String Quartet lend her a very strong and solid support. The booklet contains liner notes and the texts of the songs.
Her interpretation of Thomas Moore's 'The Last Rose Of Summer', 'Éarly One Morning' , 'The Ash Grove', 'She Is Far From The Land', 'The Sally Gardens' (Yeats), 'Danny Boy' and especially the unforgettable 'Greensleeves' are riveting, ravishing and achingly beautiful. She's perky and humorous in 'The Keel Row', 'Comin' Thro' The Rye', 'O Can Ye Sew Cushions' or 'I Have A Bonnet Trimmed With Blue'. All in all for those who love Dame Kiri and the lovely British folk songs and ballads which are featured here an indispensable and truly beautiful album.

Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16
I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.
a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21
I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."
The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.
Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.
My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.
This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

Pretty Impressive.......1999-09-08
I liked this collection a lot. My favorite piece was Near Northern where the rythym was good and the overall piece was excellent. The others were fairly good too, especially Snow What? Overall, I would say this was a nice collection to have.
Eclectic, enjoyable and eminently listenable.......1998-12-02
I've had this since last Christmas. All the tracks are good, but in particular I was tickled by "Do Something Nice For Your Mother", as narrated by Garrison Keillor. Make no mistake, this isn't exactly christmas party music -- it's best, as the title says, by the fireside.
A funk holiday album by the string quartet jazz masters........1998-10-04
This is not a typical holiday album. By The Fireside has musical styles that run from Vivaldi's Four Seasons to a the folksy music of A Prairie Home Companion; with everything done in TISQ's unique way.

Customer Reviews:
Breathtakingly Beautiful.......2004-10-27
His music is so beautiful I could cry at times. Amazing melodies combined with creative sounds & beats. I normally don't like vocals but even the few songs with vocals are great. A must-buy!
My Favorite Album of 2002....so far.......2002-07-28
Captiol K's 'Island Row' is in constant rotation for me right now. I can't get enough of the intense melodies, glitched out beats, and earnest lyrics. Normally I would not be into an album like this, I tend to like my IDM with out any lyrics what so ever. Honestly, this is the first time I have ever heard it pulled off right. This is what Radiohead (Kid A/Amnesiac) would sound like if they could ever enjoy themselves...they are excellent, but perpetually depressed. The album actually sort of reminds me of Jane's Addiction...although I doubt anyone will notice that. I was in line at the record store buying one of the Orb's two disc albums of remixes, when they staff was playing this. I knew this was what I needed. Hell, even the cover art is great. Buy this album, you will not be disappointed.
Exotic.......2002-07-26
A primitivist with a penchant for clanky beats, snaky guitars and wayward effects, one-man-band Capitol K (a.k.a. Kristian Craig Robinson) has crafted an album of exotic charms. With its ever-shifting moods and modulating soundscapes, "Island Row" is an unpredictable blend that has no qualms about starting out with the stuttering electronica of "City" and then flowing directly into the squishy pop of "Pillow." "Anon" drives along as if possessed of a head-trip trauma, while the reverberating "Soundwaves" is not unlike Radiohead tuning into a slightly different frequency. "God Ohm" block-rocks along before nearly decompensating, "Monster" cranks up some savage guitar noise and "Heat" is the sound of a desert ant under a magnifying glass. "Island Row" may seem disjointed, but it does cohere in its own peculiar fashion. Much like a Chuck Close painting - you have to stand back a bit to get it.
Chewy and Delicious!.......2002-06-01
I'm a big Amon Tobin fan...Island Row is more melodic/groovy/jazzy than AmonTobin, and equal, ear-candy-wise. The songs are remarkably listen-able, but there is so much texture here, my brain and ears are still grasping it all. Not a CD you can comprehend and digest quickly. There is ALOT of content here, and its ALL very good. Usually new CDs reveal their skip-able tracks after a few listens. Not so on Island Row. Don't get me wrong, this is not some dense difficult art-rock electronic listening "experience". Its wonderful background music too. Wade in as deep as you like. Its all refreshingly cool. Its electric pop rock with glitch-pop icing.

Customer Reviews:
Very beautiful voice.......2005-04-29
I have listened to many good baritones but Gabriel Suovanen is overwhelmingly the best of them. His voice is somehow so beautiful. He has lived whole his life in Sweden but yet he sings all the Finnish songs correctly, with a lot of emotion. I am not sure if he considers himself Swedish or Finnish but that doesn't matter; no other male singer has sung these songs so beautifully. "Oi muistatko vielä sen virren" is my favourite song; I listen it again and again and never get tired. I also enjoy the other Merikanto-songs. Yet most of the Sibelius songs are less enjoyable because of the Swedish language; I don't like it. "Demanten på marssnön" with simply piano backing is somehow even better than Jussi Björlings too massive orchestra-backed version. The Finnish folk songs that I have never heard before, are also very nice!
I recommend this cd to anyone who wants to familiarize himself with Finnish art songs. If you already know these songs and don't like them, I still recommend it. I also used to dislike Finnish songs but after listening to Suovanen, I totally changed my mind.
sounds like a younger Fischer-Dieskau.......2001-05-06
This album of Finnish folk songs is amazing. I had not heard of Gabriel Suovanen before I listened to this cd, but at only twenty-six years old, he has a lot of potential. His voice sounds very much like a younger Fischer-Dieskau. Some of the repertoire is not my favorite, but extremely enjoyable to listen to because of Suovanen's beautiful voice. The Sibelius songs are definitely the highlight of the album.
