This is the campy holiday disc of the decade (if not the past 40 years) from 1997. Everybody's favorite sugar plum fairy delivers a batch of standards and salty originals as only RuPaul can. Some of these holiday covers are done so tongue-in-cheek (i.e., "I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus") you expect to find an oral surgeon listed on the album credits. Still
Ho Ho Ho (isn't that an allusion to an old Eddie Murphy line on
Saturday Night Live?) really is fun fun fun, especially RuPaul's hilarious sendup of Eartha Kit's "Santa Baby," preceded by "All I Want for Christmas." Here the combined wish lists are slightly changed to reflect RuPaul's pronounced proclivities: cash, plastic surgery (a nice tummy tuck and some other anatomical manipulations, too), cash, and, of course, a big diamond rock. When it's all said and done, this is one Christmas sweet tart who wants "the total package, honey. TP."
Ho doesn't come with one, but a PG rating here should suffice.

Beverly Sills hardly needs an introduction. She sang on the radio as a child and on the operatic stage as a teenager; her meteoric international career was launched by appearances in several virtually unknown bel canto operas at the New York City Opera. This compilation of arias and ensembles from some of her signature roles, recorded in the 1970s, with splendid partners like Nicolai Gedda, Alfredo Kraus, and Sherrill Milnes, displays her unique vocal and dramatic artistry at its peak. Her voice, effortlessly produced over an enormous range, is bright, pure, infinitely variable in color, inflection and intensity. Her intonation is impeccable even in huge leaps, and her breath is endless. The coloratura roulades are like strings of perfect, luminous pearls, clearly articulated in seamless legato. But this stunning technique (whose only flaw is a sometimes wide, wobbly vibrato) is never used for show; every note has life and expression, serving the music and the dramatic situation. Indeed, her characters are flesh-and-blood human beings, whose thoughts, emotions and interactions, from inwardness to ecstasy, from lamentation to overflowing joy, she projects with riveting concentration. Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville is a charming, mischievous minx who succumbs to delighted tenderness; Pamira's great scene from his Siege of Corinth shows clearly why her Metropolitan Opera debut in that role was a sensation. In Verdi's Rigoletto, Gilda's hopeful innocence turns into hopeless despair: she dies, palpably, on a floating, celestial pianissimo. In his La traviata, Violetta's initial cool, hesitant restraint gradually melts as she opens herself (and her voice) to Alfredo's ardor and the bliss of love. The vocal balance in their final duet is uncanny; its tremulous tenderness in the shadow of death breaks the heart, as does her duet with Germont. Massenet's Thais is sensuous; Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Lehár's The Merry Widow provide comic relief. --Edith Eisler

Here's what the fuss was all about!.......2007-07-17
It would have been even better if they had included at least one Cleopatra aria and something from Baby Doe, but it doesn't really matter, because this collection will allow younger listeners especially to hear what the fuss was all about! There are moments listening to Sills, especially from Traviata or Manon, that are so beautifully sung and so genuine that they are heartbreaking. I feel so fortunate to have heard her Queen of the Night, Manon, Violetta, and Baby Doe. She was so generous as a performer and as a humanitarian, and she really brought opera into the American mainstream.
Beverly Sills - The Best.......2007-04-01
What a voice. No coloratura can compare, and she makes it seem so easy.
Beverly Sills' highs are breathtaking!.......2006-09-18
Adio del Passato is incredible! Beverly's high, floating coloratura is no less than ethereal which takes you to another world. Her voice has given me so much joy that it is hard to say one recording is better than another because I love her Mozart album equally with her Bellini/Donizetti. It is so wonderful to have these recordings captured on CD! Enjoy!
THE 2005 OPERA CD OF THE YEAR.......2006-08-19
THIS CD WAS THE BEST OPERA CD ISSUED LAST YEAR, AND HAS CAUGHT THE WORLD'S EAR IN NO TIME. I WAS BUSY WRITING IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, WHILE THE STATEOWNED FM RADIOSTATION, DEDICATED TO CULTURE, WAS SOFTLY PLAYING OPERA ARIAS IN THE BACKGROUND. SUDDENLY I HEARD THE MOST FANTASTIC RENDERING OF "SEMPRE LIBERA" FROM "LA TRAVIATA". I GOT UP, SAT BY THE RADIO AND WAITED TO KNOW WHO WAS SINGING... THEN GOT BACK TO THE COMPUTER TO ORDER THIS CD FROM AMAZON! INCREDIBLE: ONLY 17 BUCKS FOR THIS, WHILE QUITE A BIT OF TRASH IS SOLD FOR 30.40 AND MORE...
A LADY FRIEND ONCE TOLD ME SHE COULD NOT LISTEN TO THE DUET IN "MADAMA BUTTERFLY" WITH MIRELLA FRENI AND LUCIANO PAVAROTTI (RECORDED IN 1974, BY VON KARAJAN) WITHOUT CRYING. WELL, YOU CANNOT LISTEN TO SILLS IN "LA TRAVIATA" DRY-EYED, NO MATTER WHO THE TENOR IS. SHE PROJECTS THE SAME DRAMATIC FEELING OF "LA DIVINA" CALLAS WITHOUT THOSE SHRIEKED HIGHNOTES; SHE OFFERS THE SAME COLORATURA VOCAL GYMNASTICS AS "LA STUPENDA" SUTHERLAND BUT WITH WARMTH... WHEN BEVERLY SANG, AS IN EVERYTHING ELSE SHE DID, SHE ALWAYS GAVE HER UTMOST. SHE WAS "LA GENEROSA" TO BE SURE.
DON'T JUST SIT THERE READING WHAT OTHERS THINK.
ORDER THIS CD NOW AND MARVEL AT HOW THIS GREAT AMERICAN LADY, IN SO MANY OTHER WAYS, ALSO COULD SING!
EMI Does It Again: Beverly Sills - A Tribute.......2005-07-22
EMI's "Very Best Of" series are perfect introductions to operatic singers of the 20th century. Once you hear these artist tribute albums (much like The Singers series) you will get hooked on the singer and seek out their full-length studio recordings. Beverly Sills was the first truly famous American opera star. One may argue that she was not, that she was merely a continued tradition of American divas such as Mary Garden and Lily Pons and which still continues today with Renee Fleming, Elizabeth Futral and Susan Graham. Beverly was raised in New York City, which is still her home, and which is the home of the New York City Opera and the Met, opera houses which rocketed her to fame. Her first success (not featured in this recording...UH WHY ?) was Cleopatra of Handel's Julius Caesar, a performance she sang opposite the illustrious baritone Norman Treigle. Those performances were legendary because coincidentally at the same time the Met was opening its new theatre and season with what became a disastrous Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra starring Leontyne Price in an overblown, big-budget, epic fiasco. The great roles that followed the 1965 Cleopatra were Manon, Queen Elizabeth I in Roberto Deveraux, Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti Tudor Queen operas, Pamira in The Siege of Corinth (which were Sill's La Scala and belated Met debut. None of the Queens are featured in this recording, though its supposedly the Very Best Of. An aria from Rossini's Siege of Corinth is featured here however. What we are treated to however are fine lyric roles- Beverly Sills shone brightly and acted convincingly as Gilda in Rigoletto (the final scene is featured here) as Violetta in La Traviata, Thais, The Merry Widow (the beautiful Vilja is featured here)and the ingenue role of Norina in Don Pasquale is also showcased here. To each of these roles, Beverly Sills delivered an authenticity and dramatic interpretation, not ot mention beautiful, sweet tone. I love her pianissimos, her high notes, her chest register. It was the voice of Beverly Sills who first hooked me into opera. For a recording that should showcase her best work, Manon is not featured nor any of her prized French heroines- Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment and the heroines in Tales of Hoffman. Also not in here is the role that was her first success- the Broadway opera Ballad of Baby Doe. Even as such, the arias here are gorgeous. The Barber of Seville is in here and as Rosina she is playful and charming. Sills was a modern singer, with a voice that was beautiful but willing to sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic content. When Sills was once asked what she thought of the supposed rivalry with Joan Sutherland (which was never real and only gossip from partisan fans) Beverly said something to this effect -Joan and I are apples and oranges in our take on opera, we are Picasso and Monet. She would do anything for the effect of beauty and tone, I'd sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic text. Even as such, I see no ugliness to any of the roles here. All of them are beautiful to hear, full of rich floating celestial tones. It would have been nice to hear the roles that did call for Sills to step up the tense drama - Norma, will her recording ever be reissued by EMI ? Also, few people know that Beverly Sills sung role most would consider dangerous for her voice (though she sang them long before her career even took off)- Aida and Carmen!!

It's no mean feat being the world's foremost crossover artist--a task that risks alienating two disparate audiences and everyone in between--but somebody had to do it, and Andrea Bocelli again walks that artistic tightrope with impressive deftness. The title may imply a casual intimacy (indeed, the singer admits to taking a more "hands-on" approach to the album's conception and production), but it's a collection that nonetheless continues to expand on the Italian tenor's ambitious internationalism. His collaboration "Sin Tu Amor" immerses his voice in the Gipsy Kings' own rich Iberian folk-pop fusion with compelling results, while "Where Love Goes" (a musical focal point of the film Lazarus Child), his English language duet with 11-year-old prodigy Holly Stell, achieves an almost liturgical grace. "Tu Ci Sei" (You Are There) continues in the romantic vein of his familiar theme "Con Te Partiro" (Time to Say Goodbye), while the single "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa" (With Love You Never Know) features Bocelli in a signature dramatic tour de force collaboration with arranger Mauro Malavasi, the accomplished producer of the singer's Romanza and Sogno albums. Bocelli's shrewd taste and vocal prowess here not only again redeem an oft-maligned genre, but elevate it considerably in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
HOW DO YOU SAY,"WOW," IN ITALIAN?.......2007-06-22
BEFORE I START, LET ME SAY, THAT I AM A DANCE CLUB GUY AND THAT, ORDINARILY, THIS IS NOT MY KIND OF MUSIC. OF COURSE, I LAUGH AS I SAY THAT, AS, APPARENTLY, A NEW DOOR HAS OPENED IN MY LIFE, THANKS TO THIS MAN.
A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD HEARD ANDREA DO, "CON TE PARTIRO," ON A PBS SPECIAL AND MY EYES FILLED WITH TEARS THAT ANY HUMAN COULD MAKE SUCH SOUNDS. I WAS ASTOUNDED; MORE ASTOUNDING, STILL, WAS TO HEAR THIS ALBUM AND FIND THAT HIS VOICE HAD ACTUALLY VASTLY IMPOVED OVER TIME. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? " CON TE..," PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE QUALITY OF THIS WORK; THE TRACKS ON THIS CD ARE PERFECT, FULL, RICH, AND MORE MOVING THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER HEARD. I HAVE HAD IT A WEEK, NOW, AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE FOR VERY LONG, AND I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER. IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I HAVE BEEN AFFECTED LIKE THIS BY ANY VOCAL CD. IF HE NEVER RECORDED AGAIN HE WOULD HAVE MADE A MARK ON THE WORLD OF AUDIO NEVER TO BE ERASED OR FORGOTTEN. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT SONGS! THE CUT, "LIBERTA," ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME WITH FEELINGS OF JOY AND MARVEL. I HAVE EVEN TAKEN UP STUDYING ITALIAN BECAUSE OF IT.
TREAT YOURSELF, AND A GOOD FRIEND, TO THE SOUNDS ON THIS CD. SIT AND WATCH A SUNSET WITH IT ON... I MEAN NOW!
Just buy it........2007-05-30
If you like soft music that make's you feel up beat, just order a Andrea Bocelli CD. Listening to his CD's after being at work all day, is like having an option in life to hear and be somewhere else.
Teamo, Andrea Bocelli .......2007-03-08
One of his best. Need the lyrics translated from the Italian to the English inside the casing next time. Nonetheless, Mr. Bocelli has a beautiful voice. It made my wife and all my female co-workers swoon when they listened to it.
A new style from Andrea........2007-02-24
There were some ugly songs in here.(I absolutely hate to say that about anything Andrea.)But the good far outshone the bad.
Un Nouvo Giorno stunned me the first time I heard it.It was so unlike anything I had heard from Andrea- very pop.But it soon grew on me.
Liberta is amazing.Very catchy and upbeat.
Sempre O Mai is my favorite. It keeps its tempo up and has the best of Andrea and pop.Great song.
So this album was really a double album with pop and classical songs interspersed.A good mix from the master.
Not happy with delivery (or non delivery) of this item.......2007-01-16
When I ordered this on 12/04/2006 they said I would have it before Christmas. Then right before Christmas the delivery date was changed to mid-January. So I had to cancel my order and go, at the last minute, buy it at a store because it was a Christmas present. I wasn't happy about it and won't be buying from amazon for the holidays any longer.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07
Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.
Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18
I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.
Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21
I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!
Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11
This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

Hawaiian Favorites by Don Ho.......2007-06-09
Don Ho was always a true Hawaiian entertainer and this CD will keep his music alive.
Awesome .......2007-01-18
I enjoy the music of Don Ho and the product I received from Amazon is in excellent shape. To be able to shop on Amazon for music and other items I would not be able to get here makes it all worthwhile!
Very satisfied and loyal customer,
Jeanne Miller (former Hawaii resident now in Oklahoma)

I don't know about this one...
I listened to the samples, and even though I like Don Ho from what I've heard - I didn't like this. (Don Ho samples) It's an o.k CD, but I don't particularly like it.

Like most true originals, the Ramones embodied a dizzying array of contradictions. As punk godfathers, they became the archetype for a rebellious musical ethos that could often confuse the baby for the bath water, yet at heart they were 1960s pop- and bubblegum-worshipping reactionaries. The seeming unity symbolized by their street-hood uniform (ripped jeans, deck shoes, and black leather jackets) and name (nicked from an early nom de plume of Beatle Paul) belied turmoil both personal and personnel. And the dumber-than-dumb stance of the likes of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," "Cretin Hop," and "Teenage Lobotomy" actually masked some of the shrewdest rock ever recorded. If Rhino/Warner Archive's two-disc anthology seems like hardly enough room to document a band with a quarter-century legacy, it's good to remember that the Ramones prided themselves on stripping every song they attempted to its elemental core, then halving it again with their patented buzzsaw, double-stop tempo. Journalist David Fricke's enclosed history is telling, if ironically packaged in a glossy hard-back edition that seems more befitting the likes of Fleetwood Mac. The nearly five dozen tracks here, reaching from the early '70s to the late '90s, stand remarkably outside of time--just like true originals. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
4.5 stars!.......2007-04-30
You know how I got into the Ramones? Well, from reading Green Day's biography 'The Story of Green Day', Billie-Joe said that at least half of what you hear on the radio these days has been influenced by the Ramones. So I decided to check them out, and I LOVED them! I now love them almost as much as I love Green Day. They have a colourful history and great music! You should so check out this anthology of their greatest hits of all time, and if you don't then you're a moron.
It's a Sensation.......2007-02-11
(I'm no kid, but I'm a thinker)
I own all of there Studio albums pluse three live ones and to be honest I bought this for only two resons...
1. The tracks I Don't Wanna Live This Life (Anymore and the C.J. vocal verson of R.A.M.O.N.E.S.
2. I wanted something I could just grab to least to in the car and not have to drag all my CDs with me.
Now the songs themselfs I'd give 5 stars to but there are some songs on this CD collection I thought wern't imporatant to a collection like this and there are a few I would like to have seen.
What should not have been included...
I Remember you
Here Today, Gone Tommorrow
Surfin' Bird
Don't Come Close
I Can't Make It On Time
I'm Affected
She's a Sensation
I'm Not Afraid of Life
With that I was really upset to find the song "We're a Happy Family" (A Ramones Classic) Not on this collection. Johnny once said himself that the Ramones collection out there we're focusing too much on there softer stuff to get sales. This doesn't seem much differnt to me. But at the same time you can't put just there hits on because they never had one.
The song I wish would be one this collection...
Today Your Love, Tommorrow the World
We're a Happy Family
Do You Wanna Dance
I'm Aganist It
I Wanted Everything
Outsider
Warthog
Love Kills
I guess over all a alright collection. Real True-Blue fans might be a little upset but thats life, get over it!
If your looking for just a start to the band get "Loud, Fast: Their Toughest Hits"
Gabba Gabba Hey!
Heads out of butts and fingers out of ears.......2006-12-29
I reading the reviews for this CD I have noticed that some are not reviews of the CD it self or sound quality but of the band itself. I love every thing the ramones have done. They are one of the few bands that didn't change for anyone. I don't give a flying rat what you think about the band. If you have a problem with the band the tell it to some one who cares. I wanna hear if it's got a good track listing or a good booklet, not if you like the band or not. What the heck are you doing spending $[...] on a band your just looking into anyway? As for you who say their not "punk" They started punk so wouldn't that mean stuff like Green Day and (barf!) Blink 182 are NOT? Yeah, get your heads out of your butts and cry a river to some one who cares. Review the CD not the Band.
If your a Ramones fan you will like the track listing and the booklet. If you just want a small look into the band then go for Loud, Fast The Ramones. For half the price it gives you a quick look into the band that changed the face of music.
Gabba Gabba Hey!
Gabba gabba hey!.......2006-12-09
the ramones are probably my favorite band. it is well known that their first 3 albums are considered classics. so if you don't want to buy the anthology you should pick up on of the first 3. ok but the problem with that is then you don't get anything from end of the century or the other great songs after those 3 (there weren't too many) with this anthology you get the basics "blitzkrieg bop" "judy is a punk" "california sun" "beat on the brat" you also get "rock 'n' roll highschool" "do you remember rock 'n' roll radio?" "danny says" and that's on disc one... on disc two you get their harder songs like "the kkk took my baby away" "my brain is hanging upside down" "pet semetery" the second disc is okay but there are a lot better songs that the ramones made that were kept out of this set. for instance there isn't any "oh oh i love her so" "you're gonna kill that girl" "today your love, tomorrow the world" and so on... the quality of the songs is great and despite a few good songs getting passed over i would recommend this to someone as an introduction into one of the greatest and most underappreciated bands ever. also if you really like the ramones you should check out "End of the Century" on DVD
minus a star because i personally would recommend buying ALL of the albums.......2006-11-17
i, sadly used to be one of those stupid kids who shyed away from The Ramones(about a year ago...im young) because i wasn't really much of a hardcore fan of blitzkrieg bop or i wanna be sedated and thats all you heard when you heard the Ramones...maybe a rocket to russia track here and there, but mostly, it was one of those bands that i mistakenly clumped in with the sex pistols(a mediocre band)
i could slap myself then. The Ramones are one of the only punk bands to give me the "awe" goosebumps. I mean along with the Damned, i think the Ramones are the co-kings of the 77 punk thing as far as i can tell. this band itself is a really unique band ....joey is the rather unique cartoonish looking vocalist..johnny is the one who is kinda of like the father figure..silent in voice, but always showing how punk was supposed to be with his unique political views and killer guitar...dee dee was the most street punk of the group.
yeah to newcomers, id recommend this, but id really recommend you start with the early albums and then work your way up...please dont throw them by the wayside simply because "i wanna be sedated" and "blitzkrieg bop" are overplayed. dont worship bands that march like sheep towards every scene following dead kennedys wannabe band and listen to one of the the best. the innovaters!!

Suck 'em Up!.......2003-11-06
There is no definitive Don Ho & the Aliis anthology... it's a crime, for sure. The next best thing is to buy GREATEST HITS, TINY BUBBLES and THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM, all three on CD, all three to be found used on Amazon.com for a cheap cover.
GREATEST HITS was released, originally, in 1969, and is a compilation of Don Ho hits and favorites from the apex of his career as a singer, songwriter, performer. A lot of people hate Don Ho because of childhood memories of schlock; more appropriately, however, he's the next step after Martin Denny, and his act was influenced by Elvis's success with BLUE HAWAII (probably Presley's best selling album ever). In 1965, Capitol Records' subsidiary Tower Records threw out one of the most interesting compilations of Hawaiian Lounge with the release of an LP titled WAIKIKI SWINGS. This seems to be the first album to present Don Ho to a mainland audience, under the guise of a liner note claiming that, "Don Ho, Kui & Nani Lee, and other Hawaiian Mods are all here." With a more 'In-Crowd' tailoring than that of previous imported slack key/steel guitar records, WAIKIKI SWINGS is a fantastic example of Elvis meets Kui Lee... no doubt actual Mods will take real offense and consider this whole idea stupid. But, Lounge collectors, Surf/Garage aficionados and even Mods that have a sense of humor (a rare, but existing breed) may have no problem connecting the dots and appreciating Don Ho's aesthetic without pretense. Don himself has referred to Kui Lee as the "John Lennon of Hawaii"; Lee died of cancer in 1966 after only one album, and Don Ho would be the one to take his music to a worldwide audience (Kui Lee represents a third of the songwriter credits on this CD, including the incredible "I'll Remember You").
DON HO -- GREATEST HITS! needs more songs... okay. But, the whole CD flies by, and every song is skillfully performed (which is what a greatest-hits package should be). The live cuts are reminiscent of the old-time Waikiki Beachboys and their ukulele parties on the Moana Pier. Don Ho fits their mold and has made a life for himself living at the beach. "E' Lei Ka Lei Lei (Beach Party Song)" and "By the Shack, by the Sea" are charming representations of the Beachboy lifestyle and musicality. Don Ho & the Aliis, young singers like Robin Wilson (A&M), Angel Pablo and Sam Kapu, Jr. were on stage at Duke Kahanamoku's having a ball every night. During his years at Duke's, Don literally erupted on the national show biz scene, first and most suddenly in a two-week engagement at Hollywood's ultra-posh Cocoanut Grove in 1966. His opening night was a triumph, breaking all previous attendance records. The excessive drinking probably didn't sit well with pot-smoking hippies, but Hawaiian Beachboy-types and Lounge crooners were not known to be light on their livers.
Here's hoping Don Ho's whole catalogue sees reissue soon. Suck 'em Up!
Frighteningly Barbaric Sounds.......2003-11-03
While Mr. Ho probably represents the ultimate in authentic Hawaiian traditional singing, I can't say I really go for that kind of rough, old-fashioned folk music, with its macho depictions of intertribal warfare and patriarchal oppressiveness. Call me a wimp, but I much prefer the softer smoother sounds of early 1960s "lounge" music, with all those cool daddy-o lyrics and mellow instrumental accompaniment. You just can't beat something like Les Elgart or Dick Hyman for soothing background to your next full-tux cocktail party.

Customer Reviews:
If you love beautiful voices..........2007-04-30
and passionate singing, you won't be disappointed. While Corelli certainly had his flaws, they are minor in the larger picture of this unique, magnificent force of nature. Then get this set for your friend who thinks Andrea Bocelli is a great tenor.
If you want to know Corelli's art, this is the right CD.......2007-03-10
Franco Corelli had one of the powerful tenor voices of the twentieth century. Think Mario del Monaco with more beauty and grace; think Richard Tucker with a smoother voice. He had annoying touches in his singing, such as those "catches" here and there. But, with Tucker, he is, in my estimation, one of the two most powerful and attention riveting tenors in the past century. Other tenors were more artistic, provided better characterization (think Domingo, Gigli, Pavarotti, Gedda, Caruso, and some others).
But Corelli was a wonder of nature! Some samples: "Ah si, ben mio. . .Di quella pira." If there were an aria made for Corelli, this would be it. His big, rich, powerful voice fits this cut nicely. Not much subtlety here. In "Di quella pira," he hits the high notes in a stentorian manner. There are those mannerisms, but they are so easily forgiven, taking into account that rich, lustrous voice.
"Celeste Aida" is another representative cut. This is a powerful version. Also, note how he goes from forte to piano at the end of this aria. A powerful effect indeed.
Then, there are the twin arias from "Tosca." In "Recondita armonia," his rich voice is well manifest. He exhibits a smooth line in his singing. This is a powerful version of this well known aria. "E lucevan le stele" displays again that rich voice. At one point, he goes from forte to piano in a mesmerizing manner (Who'd have thought it?). His final "la vita" grabs one's attention.
Finally, "Nessun dorma." Well, smoothly, and powerfully sung. The final "vincero" is powerfully rendered, leaving goose bumps on the spine.
This is the very best of Franco Corelli. Those who want to get a sense of the vocal prowess of one of the most powerful tenors of the 20th century should attend to this double CD set.
excellent gift.......2007-02-09
I gave it to my father and he says Its an amazing cd.
Greatest Tenor of This Century!.......2007-02-03
Franco Corelli is the greatest tenor of this century. Although there are many fine tenors including Carlo Bergonzi - no tenor comes close to singing with the pure heart and animal magnetism of Franco Corelli. Surprisingly, he was also quite comfortable with bel canto, listen to the incredible "A te o'cara". I've heard "Nessun Dorma" sung by many excellent tenors and hands down, none can touch the sublime beauty of Corelli's version. This 2cd set of his greatest arias is a wonderful gift for any opera fan. "Recondita Armonia" is my personal favorite. His thrilling vocal beauty and intensity of performance is truly unforgettable.
Ah... Franco :}.......2007-01-10
Such a pleasing voice. I can't believe the clarity and perfection. He was well before my time and others have become more 'popular' since then, but for some reason his voice seems better than the more current singers. I do not know much about opera so I will have to rely only on my own ears. I happily recommend this double album. I like to have it playing on the 5 CD changer with other opera cds, mixing through them...it is a perfect saturday morning accompaniment. enjoy.

English Renaissance music done beautifully........2007-05-13
I bought this CD to have some authentic English Renaissance music in my collection,
and fell in love with it. The Earl of Oxford March is particularly appealing.
They don't come much better........2005-08-23
The incomparable Canadian Brass make this album a rare treat. From the first notes of Holborne's "Galliard" to the magnificent complexity of Byrd's "Fitzwilliam Suite", their renditions are sheer delight. The music is both relaxing and enjoyably stimulating. Repeated hearings allow the listener to discover some hidden turn or embellishment that was not noticed before, or to appreciate again the antiphonal and complementary interplay of the instruments in the antique harmonies they create. A most enjoyable recording.
The finest brass ensembles all on 1 album.......2002-01-31
I got this CD quite a while ago, and I still listen to it almost daily. Best at night in a candlelit room while it's raining sipping fine wine and reminising of the Renaissance festival! (wierd, I know. But that's just me) If you have an interest in this time period, you won't regret buying this CD.
An interesting spin on English Renaissance Music.......2000-08-09
The composers of 16th century England were able to take the music of other countries and produce something uniquely their own. So, too, has Canadian Brass taken English Renaissance music and made it into something wonderfully different. Immediately accessible (and acceptable) to modern ears, these tunes are a splendid treat. Almans and Galliards take on a whole new flavor when done entirely by brass instruments.
Great sound. Definitely a must for your collection........1999-11-05
I listen to this CD about once a week while riding to work so that I can keep my sanity. It was a gift from my daughters that keeps on giving.

Customer Reviews:
Not Thrilling.......2007-01-05
I have been online for 3 hours tonight reading Amazon's reviews of various medieval CD's. I really wanted to find a Waverly Consort CD comparable to their marvelous, magical, exuberant "A Waverly Consort Christmas," but nothing seems to match that one. I have a dial-up modem and for some reason none of Amazon's musical selections will play even though I have no problems with video games and music uploads from other sources. Thus, I have to rely upon written reviews.
Among the many albums for which I read reviews tonight was one for "A Medieval Banquet" by the Newberry Consort. The title & group rang a bell so I checked my collection and found that it was originally called *Il Solazzo" (as others have already noted among these reviews). I bought it in early 1995 but never wrote any comments in the attached booklet, which is unusual for me.
I have now played the CD twice and understand why I made no comments: it was simply not thrilling. I am no musicologist -- just someone who loves early music because it makes my soul sing. This CD is "nice," but my soul goes ho-hum when I hear it. (The one exception is the #9 selection with rebec, vielle & lute -- and no voices.)
The instrumentals have a certain charm but they generally feel more Renaissance than medieval to me. The vocals leave me completely cold. In some of the reviews I read tonight I came across the concept of "operatic" applied to some of this early music. I had no idea what the authors meant since there was no opera at such an early period. But in playing this CD, I understood -- there is indeed a bloated, elaborate vocal quality that really does feel "operatic." It seems entirely unsuited to "Music for a Medieval Banquet."
If your soul wants to sing, this proably isn't the CD for you. Try the Waverly Consort's "Christmas" along with a glass of fine wine
Good CD.......2004-04-30One of the reasons why I bought this recording is the interesting choice of pieces, which range from the often-recorded instrumental dances to the less-known sung tracks.
When I played it, the first thing that struck me of this CD is the thinness of the sound in the dances. Although the performance is spotless, it lacks the body that other medieval-dance groups add to their sound - notably the older but still great Studio der Fruehen Musik. Is this an unfair statement? Perhaps - but these dances have been recorded so many times that it is only natural to compare versions.
Also, the use of percussion instruments would have been a nice touch, besides being perfectly historical. Then, a more varied instrumental arrangement may have been a good addition, especially in the longer numbers such as Chominciamento di gioia.
The other point that puzzled me is that in the first track (La Badessa), the singer sounds as if she is playing a losing game of catch-up with the instruments, which results in a mediocre performance of that particular piece. It is a pity, because the song is very catchy and the singer's voice is stylistically spot on.
Having said all this, the selections of songs and dances is first-choice, the performance is good and well researched and the CD remains one of the most played in my household.
Re-release of Il Solazzo.......2002-10-10
Just a quick note on this CD: It's a re-release of the Newberry Consort's "Il Solazzo" disc without the texts and with less nice packaging. Since that disc can be hard to find, this CD is welcome, but if you can find the other release cheaper it's a better deal.
A good, simple bargain, with a sweet reward.......2002-06-11
This simple little album reminds me of what it is that I love most about the Italian Renaissance - its barefaced passion and gut level power. So playful and raucous at times that I felt as if I were in a scene from Pasolini's irreverent "Decameron" and at other moments, so serene that I was in a chapter from Chaucer. The music is simple and unpretentious. Not resorting to gimmicks, they allow the music to be expressed in a way that it very probably was in the age when it reigned: unashamed, expressive, brazenly colorful and just a bit flamboyant.
So much for the performers. As for the producers...
On the downside, it is painfully obvious that they made this album on a shoe-string budget. That can be a good thing in forcing the artists to stick to the music's purity instead of hiring a team of sound engineers to make it "sound" better, but there is absolutely no documentation about the songs, other than their titles and playing times. A sickly-thin album insert has a blurb in English and Italian about polyphony, told in allegorical style, with each paragraph in an alternating language instead of one section in each language. Go figure! Maybe the AltaVista translator they used for free had a one-paragraph limit.
But it also has a variety of styles, both vocal and instrumental, so it gives a nice overall flavor of what life might have sounded like in that little part of the world, during that remarkable little slice of musical history.
