At his best, the Kinks' Ray Davies is one of the cleverest writers in pop, managing to wring universal appeal from a wholly and unapologetically English perspective. Most of the artists featured on This Is Where I Belong are American, and most acquit themselves admirably. Hosannas must be directed at Fountains of Wayne's giddy reading of "Better Things," Cracker's rousing "Victoria," an intricate working of "Art Lover" by Lambchop, and a spectacular, turbocharged "Who'll Be the Next in Line" by Queens of the Stone Age. The decision to close the album with Davies himself performing one of his finest songs--"Waterloo Sunset"--with one of his able heirs, Damon Albarn of Blur, is a neat touch. --Andrew Mueller

4 out of 5 stars A Kurious Kollection of Kinks' Klassics.......2007-04-14

As Ray Davies notes in his self-penned liner notes, "tribute albums are usually conceived after the composer has 'passed.'" Of course the long-time Kinks frontman has not passed, but his legacy has certainly passed the test of time. As of this writing, these songs date back forty years--and even the most recent (""Better Things" and "Art Lover" from 1981's GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT) are 25 years old. With the release of Ray's first new album in years (2006's OTHER PEOPLES' LIVES), I finally picked this album up last week (though it was initially released in 2002).

It's a somewhat eclectic collection of songs. There are a couple of U.S. hits ("A Well Respected Man" and "Who'll Be the Next in Line") and U.K hits ("Waterloo Sunset" and "Victoria"), but there are no covers of their early hits like "You Really Got Me" or "All Day and All of the Night." Instead, most of the artists tend to lean more toward the introspective side of Ray's songbook.

Most of the artists tend to remain fairly faithful to the original Kinks' arrangements. So when you listen to Steve Forbert do "Starstruck" or Matthew Sweet perform "Big Sky," they are certainly lovingly done, but they don't really bring anything new to the songs.

There are, however, a handful of artists who approach the songs from a new angle. For example, Josh Rouse (a native Nebraskan, by the way) gives his reading of "A Well Respected Man" a haunting quality with his delicate vocal delivery. Bluegrass veteran Tim O'Brien gives "Muswell Hillbilly" a honky-tonk treatment complete with steel guitar and fiddle.

And then there is the duet with Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Ray Davies himself on perhaps his most beautiful song, "Waterloo Sunset." This version was recorded live in 1995 for a British TV show.

Taken altogether, this is a wonderful collection of songs. It certainly offers much to enjoy for any Kinks fan, and it's encouraging to see these songs being embraced by another generation of musicians. RECOMMENDED [Running time - 50:33]

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs in New Versions!.......2006-11-03

This CD of new recordings of Ray Davies songs is really a pleasure to listen to. Great variety in sounds and style but great songs all the way through - though it loses a little steam towards the end.

Some tracks are very true to the original whereas others are treated in new and different ways - in some cases in very exciting ways.

The opening track "Better Days" from "Give the People What They Want" is a great song, but it always sounded a little rough and demo-like to my ears. Very interesting to learn from Davies own well-written liner-notes that it really was only demo that was included on the album. A great opener here given a power-pop treatment by Fountains of Wayne.

Steve Forbert's version of "Starstruck" from Village Green P.S. is just as great. Musically more polished than the opener, but Forbert's raw vocals give this fine song a new edge.

"Stop Your Sobbing" is given an acoustic treatment by Jonathan Richman. Very nice, which is also Bebel Gilberto's version of "No Return", which is probably the only bossa-nova song Davies ever wrote. Ray reveals that the song was written with Bebel's mother Astrud ( the girl from Ipanema ) in mind.

"A Well Respected Man" originally was a raw half-acoustic recording. This new version by Josh Rouse has been given a completely different more polished feel - the satire may not be quite as obvious as on the original but great to hear the song interpreted so differently.

"Victoria" is probably too true to the original "Arthur" version to make it really interesting.

"Who'll Be the Next in Line" is good but no more.

Another stand-out is the overlooked gem "Big Sky" from Village G.P.S. Though this new recording has been given an almost identical arrangement, the vocals are more up front than on the original which is great. Though the original is great too, I always felt it deserved a better recording.

Lambchop's version of another "Give the People What They Want" song is very different from the original. Darker and slower. Maybe this version does quite capture the ambiguity of the the Kinks'version.

"Picture Book" is another gem from the Village G.P.S. - one the greatest albums of all time - check out the the deluxe version and enjoy the original along a lot equally great out-takes. This new version is charming and fine!

If you didn't know better you would have thought "Muswell Hillbilly" was an old Hank Williams song; at least that's what Tim O'Brian makes the song sound like.

From "Lola Versus Powerman" comes another overlooked song - I do remember the Kinks played the song in their 1974 Denmark tour alongside their Preservation songs. This new version comes close to the original; the singer even sounds like Davies at times - a fine track.

"Till the End of the Day" is a great rocker but Fastball really don't add anything to it; except maybe make you want to hear the original again.

The title track was originally only released as the B-side to an obscure 1967 European single. Ron Sexsmith new version almost sounds like a 1967 recording too. Solid, but no more.

From "Face to Face" comes the oriental inspired "Fancy" - one on Davies most personal early songs, but also one of the least catchy.

Ray Davies himself along with Damon Albarn closes the album with a live version of "Waterloo Sunset" - a song that has been called the greatest single of the late 1960's.

A worthy tribute to one of the finest songwriters of rock during 4 decades.

5 out of 5 stars Ray Davies for now people.......2005-01-26

It seems to be a requirement for music snobs to have their favorite neglected genius, the one who wrote better songs than Lennon and/or McCartney and/or both but never got the credit he or she deserved. Typically most of said snobs tend to pick Lou Reed. Well, I say good choice, no harm in that one, but I am going to have to go with Ray Davies. Sorry Lou. Ray's songs seem a bit more universal, a bit more touching, a bit easier to connect to. As much as I love "Heroin" and "Sweet Jane," I more often find myself with "Big Sky" or "This is Where I Belong" on the player. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

When I discovered this compilation, the name tipped me off that it would be good. If Ryko had called it "All Day and All of the Night," for example, or "You Really Got Me," it would have conjured up images of Van Halen or some other inane, dated hard-rock group grinding out yet another cover of the earliest stuff. "This is Where I Belong" is not only a great song from the classic mid-period years but it is also an obscurity. Somebody knew what they were doing over at Ryko, so I had to invest the $14 it cost at the time to find out whether it was any good.

And it was. These artists show exactly why Ray's music is so special...it is completely timeless. The glory of "Big Sky," my favorite Kinks song, is captured magnificently here by Matthew Sweet. Jonathan Richman shows us exactly why "Stop Your Sobbing" hasn't lost any of its charm- its simplicity allows the message- one of coping with sorrow of any kind- to come through clearly. Fountains of Wayne take another obscurity, "Better Things," and maintain its feel as a powerpop gem while making sound like it was written yesterday. None of the wit or wisdom is lost in any of these translations. Yeah Cracker doesn't sound like Cracker here but so what, you want to hear Cracker in their purest form then put on "Kerosene Hat." Nothing on here disappoints.

A worthy complilation for one of the best songwriters ever. It may even be desert island stuff for me.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy tribute.......2004-10-03

I keep going back to this CD, again and again. A must-have for anyone who appreciates Ray Davies. A couple of duds (Josh Rouse, Jonathan Richman) are overwhelmed by awesome covers. Some performers opt for straight-rocking versions (Queens of the Stone Age on "Who'll be the Next in Line?," Fastball on "Till the End of the Day" and Cracker on "Victoria"). "Better Things" is a great opener, an upbeat way to start any day. Matthew Sweet turns in an epic "Big Sky." The haunting "Art Lover" as done by Lambchop is one of the most arrestingly disturbing yet poignant songs ever written. Ron Sexsmith captures the longing tone of Davies in the title track -- which says so much in so few words about Ray's romantic attachment to one's physical place in life. The arrangement (with producer Martin Terefe's looping bass) displays power in simplicity. And the closing live version of "Waterloo Sunset"...well, this one song earned Ray Davies a place in popular music's hall of fame.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Rachel.......2007-07-22

Where I Belong by Rachel Proctor is a spirited, optimistic and fun female country album. It's a pleasure to put it in the player and let it go. Good songs:

Days Like This - optimistic energy, singer is glad to be alive

Me and Emily - woman makes hard, but needed, decision to get her and her daugther away from an abusive man

I'm Gonna Get You BAck - sassy

Shame on Me - very country dance-floor feel to it

If You're Gonna Leave Me

So Close - nice tune on a single man and single woman who just miss meeting as they go about daily lives

We Did It Our Way - very lively, celebrates singer and lover having taken chances

5 out of 5 stars Where she Belongs...is the Top of the Charts .......2007-05-11

Rachel Proctor's appearance belies her music. She sounds older and wiser, singing stories about life's journey with a "not gonna take it" attitude. Her voice is a rugged alto and a powerful instrument indeed. She displays emotional depth matching high quality songwriting. The West Virginia native is also an excellent songwriter; her credits are among the most stellar cuts here. I especially loved "Didn't I," it expresses a yearning I don't often hear. Her vocals equal Trisha Yearwood or Sara Evans. Her country eloquence combined with explosive power sometimes rivals Martina McBride.

Like other reviewers, I found the most standout cuts to be "If That Chair Could Talk" - in the best tradition of country reflection songs, "Strong as an Oak" - evokes comparisons to the best of the new traditionalists, and "Me and Emily" - her video hit and the highest charting single from this album. I highly recommend this; Rachel sings with a depth of feeling similar to her former bandmate Blake Shelton. Some of these aren't fantastic songs, and she's up against tough competition, but this is an excellent start. I think this album's as good as Carrie Underwood's; no country fan who heard it would dislike it. Rachel must be a victim of marketing troubles, but I read she has an independent EP coming out. That's good news for the future of good quality country music.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy CD.......2005-12-15

This CD in my opinion is much overlooked and underrated. It is a great CD but unfortunately it did not sell very well. I think it is not because the album wants for lack of good music, but rather because the two singles released off of it, "Days Like This" and "Me & Emily" did not reflect the album well, nor were they the best songs on the album. My personal favorite is the emotive, moving ballad "Didn't I", the fast paced "If you're gonna leave me (leave me alone)", and the slow, moving "Strong as an Oak". I think that the song "We did it our way" would have done so much better on the radio than "Days like this" and "Didn't I" is a better ballad than "Me & Emily" any day. I think "If that chair could talk" would have made a good single as well. This album could have produced at least three hit singles that were well recieved by listeners, but instead BNA made the bad decision of releasing one of the most bland, forgettable songs on the album, along with a possibly controversial, heartbreaking single that some did not care for. At any rate, while "Me & Emily is a solid single that would have done well enough it it had been followed up by something great (and there is a lot to choose from on this album, believe me!) one great single unfortunately does not typically sell enough records to keep a new artisit alive.

Even if pop legend Britney Spears (and i'm not comparing country to pop or apples to oranges here!) had released only one single or even two instead of the five hits she did release off her first album, she would be long forgotten, just another one-hit-wonder. Believe me, record companies know what they're about when they are making an album and breaking out new artists, it isn't really up to the artist whether he or she makes it big or not unless they know how to negotiate their contracts well, it's up to the record company and the quality and number of a-sides or singles they use, along with how many they decide to release. And the sad part is that they know all of this information long before the album is ever released. If they want an artist to make it, they have ways of ensuring success, as has been demonstrated with many big pop, rap, and R&B artists. This usually isn't something country music is particularly fond of doing, as country music albums generally have much better overall quality than other genres and songs that can be hits if there is a demand for the artist, although in this case I think they only made bad decisions on which singles to market. Unfortunately talent does not matter in today's commercial music mayhem! But if you're looking for talent, this is surely an album to buy.

I think it is unfortunate that someone as talented as Rachel Proctor wasn't given a fair chance in country music due to poor album marketing. She has a beautiful voice that rivals that of Martina McBride and Trisha Yearwood, with all the sincerity and emotion to convey the meaning of these songs & really pull the listener in. I hope she releases another album in the near future, though i'm not counting on it because she never met with much success with this album. Although if it had been promoted better and different songs released as singles besides the ones they used, I believe it would have been extremely popular.

Buy this album if you want to hear fresh new talent and a beautiful voice in country music and great songs. While it may not be a commercial record company's dream come true, it is a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is Where She Belongs!!!.......2005-07-05

5 out of 5 stars Don't Overlook Rachel.......2004-12-29

With a new crop of talented female artists (finally!) making waves in the country music scene, I hope Rachel gets the credit she deserves. She is very talented and her album is really good! It took 3 singles ("Days Like This", "Didn't I" and "Me & Emily") to finally get her album released, once "Me & Emily" caught people's attention. The album kicks off with "Days Like This", a fun, uptempo, (some might say pop-ish, but that's ok with me) song that you want to crank up loud. Rachel shows some spunk and sass on "I'm Gonna Get You Back", "Shame on Me" and "If You're Gonna Leave Me" which are all pure country in sound. "If That Chair Could Talk" is a true sentimental gem, as she reflects on all the stages of her life through the eyes of a chair that has been in the house the whole time and has "seen it all".

You can hear the despair in Rachel's voice on "Didn't I", and you feel the emotion she has for the single man & woman in "So Close". The album closes with the sweet "Where I Belong" which hasn't done well on radio (as the 4th single) but maybe because it's a bit slow.

Overall I think Rachel is very talented as a singer and songwriter (she also penned Martina McBride's hit "Where Would You Be") and I hope radio starts recognizing her more!

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

This is an absolutely wonderful and poignant CD. Cudos to Kent. My favorite part is the final cut by underground artist Jula Bell. I was so pleased to hear her singing on something like this. Cheers to Kent for having the guts to take a chance with someone who is a truly cutting edge artist known for her integrity. I was pleasantly surprised to see her name on the CD after hearing her shiver inducing track. Why did Sting get all of that attention? Bell's song blows doors on his. It's simplicity and bold melody is the heart and soul of the soundtrack. Why wasn't this song in the movie? Buy this cd to hear one of the best female vocalists out there---

5 out of 5 stars Singer Jula Bell is an amazing new talent.......2002-11-07

I enjoyed this CD immeasurably. Kent is a genius with his timing. Very full Copeland and Stravinsky inspired overtures laced with a delightfully romantic motive all come together to climax with with the delicate and sweet bluesy "Back Where I Belong" sung by Jula Bell. What is disturbing to me is that new talent, Jula Bell has been overshadowed by Sting and his "Until". I enjoyed the Sting song, but think that "Back Where I Belong" would have been a much better choice as the soundtrack hit. Does anyone know where else I can find recordings with Jula Bell on them?

3 out of 5 stars Buy it for one song, "Until".......2002-08-28

Joanne Long's reviews are right on target. I bought the soundtrack for Sting's masterpiece "Until". While the score can be lovely at times, I find myself tuning out. The 'flavor' of the movie, the Strauss Dances, is missing. Buy the soundtrack for Sting's deeply moving waltz. I cannot find that song recorded anywhere else. Then follow Ms. Long's instructions for the perfect recording!

4 out of 5 stars Ahem. Please allow me to change my mind........2002-08-23

Rather than skipping this CD and buying only "Strauss Dances," as I recommended in June, buy both and copy them onto two sides of a 90-minute audio cassette.

Rolfe Kent's soundtrack holds up very well over time -- except for the last number, a vocal not heard in the movie. Rearrange and re-engineer the songs as you like them. I put "Tivoli-Rutsch Walzer" on the tape where it should have been.

You might also find Django Rhinehart's "Honeysuckle Rose," which worked so well in the movie, and insert that where it should be. Lose the "Back Where You Belong" vocal and let Sting sing last.

On the other side, let the Gaudier Ensemble serenade you with "Tivoli" and whatever other dances you like. Voila, the perfect tape.

    5 out of 5 stars Sugar Cream.......2007-07-02

Wendy Colonna's "Right Where I Belong" is a strong set. Fans of Bonnie Raitt's soulful blues-flavored sound will find a new friend. The title track is a catchy midtempo charmer with a sweet melody and a darker tone in the lyric, "Chasing your tail, you know they tell you success is just a few hard breaks away, heartache to heartache, I ain't feeling like I'm healing & I know there's a better way." Wayne Sutton's guitar on "Sail On" squeezes the juice out of his electric guitar as Wendy's wistful vocals float effortlessly to produce an excellent sound. "Coffee Today" is a sad ballad of remembrance, "Tangled hair & jaded dreams, water spoons & sugar creams, you woke me up & now I seem asleep today." "October" aches softly with Wendy's lovely refrain, "Would you come back home?" The CD ends on a high note with "Nothin Gonna Take My Love" with Eldridge Goins sounding like he's beating out Indian war drums on Wendy's declaration of love. There are no weak tracks on the CD with some excellent gems to treasure. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-11-03

Wendy's third album is by far her best to date. Her song "Coffee Today" was fantastic on her second album "Red." She improved it tremendously for "Right Where I Belong." The new version is fuller and richer. This one song is reason enough to buy this album and the rest of the album will not disappoint you either. This CD is in my regular listening rotation. Everyone who has heard this CD has loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Sultry, sweet, salty, wonderful!.......2005-10-07

I'm deeply involved in music and have a huge collection to choose from, and yet here plucky l'il Wendy Colonna has actually made a CD that I listen to every day. The thing is, a lot of women can sing and write songs, but Wendy's got Something else, something that is so direct and touching, the true essence of soul, and there's nothing in between it and her music. I don't just love this album and her singing, I truly respect its songwriting. Wendy is real. She's not packaged, and there's everything from the soul-filling defiance of the blues-based Nothing's Going To Take My Love, to the musing wistful sweetness of May Day, all expressed in her amazing sultry, soulful, exuberant voice and the inspired musical arrangements of her highly talented band. No whining, here- just great, highly original soul/roots/rock/funk. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Beautiful.......2005-09-27

Wonderful, Beautiful, and Talented can only describe Wendy Colonna. Right Where I Belong is a wonderful album that you can listen to over and over. Thank you Wendy for such beautiful music.

    5 out of 5 stars wow...just wow.......2005-09-19

I don't know how Wendy manages to be simultaneously so dark and brooding and yet so hopeful and inspiring. She sings with an achingly beautiful voice that makes sorrow as sultry and inviting as joy.

That doesn't mean its a downer - it walks that line of setting a haunting mood without wallowing in it. It's a rainy-day/long- drive/late-night-while-drinking-alone-in-a-dark-room album that never goes to far - for every equisite expression of pain (Vacancy, October) there's an equally powerful expression of recovery and triumph - the you-f***ed up a good thing attitude of Mayday, the glass-half-full argument of Easy, the thankful prayer of empowerment that is Nothing Going to Take My Love, and the self-explanatory title track, Right Where I Belong)

This isn't the self-indulgent friend you avoid while she goes through her painful breakup because she's going to wallow in self-pity, this is the self-aware friend you want to drink with while she goes through her painful breakup because you know she's going to wallow in self-discovery, and if you listen close you know you'll learn something...

    Right Where I Belong

    ASIN: B000SQK9A2

    Product Description

Lauren Hooker's critically acclaimed debut CD "Right Where I Belong" with Rufus Reid on the bass, Allen Farnham on piano and Tim Horner on drums and percussion, features jazz standards, original compositions, as well as her own lyrics set to Monk, Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Fats Waller and Mal Waldron. (read reviews below). Within the third week of radio airplay, Lauren was at the top of the chartbound list of jazz CDs played across the nation and in Canada according to jazzweek. A featured guest on WKCR's "Jazz Alternatives" 89.9 FM with Host Sharif Abdul Salaam and The Joey Reynolds Show on WOR 710 AM both located in NYC, Lauren's debut CD continues to receive heavy airplay on both internet and radio stations here and abroad. Lauren is not just a singer. She is a consummate musician. Her unique and special talent was recognized early in life and it has developed into the sophisticated, hip vocalist, composer, lyricist and producer she is today. She came onto the jazz scene in the early 80's, fresh out of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in Music Education. Lauren continued post-graduate work in jazz theory with pianist Kenny Barron at Rutgers University, jazz voice with Sheila Jordan at the Manhattan School of Music, private studies in jazz piano with Keith McDonald and vocal coach Paul Gallagher and most recently, a jazz vocal workshop with Bobby McFerrin and his "Voicestras" vocal ensemble. She has been featured in many major venues in the New York metropolitan area including Sweetwaters, the West End Café, The 55 Bar, Trumpets, Lounge Zen, the Angry Squire, as well as in the Dewar's Festival, Greenwich Village Jazz Festival and most recently at the International Women in Jazz Festival at St. Peter's Church in NYC. 5 out of 5 stars Lauren Hooker: A Consummate Artist.......2007-06-30

There are few musicians with the depth of training that Lauren Hooker has. She is highly respected in the New York music scene not only for her admirable qualities as a jazz vocalist (she is one of the best before audiences today!), but she is also a composer, a creative lyricist, and an innovator in a field of luminaries.

On this CD, appropriately named 'Right Where I Belong', Lauren Hooker is finally available to those of us on the West Coast who know her only by reputation. Here she works with Allen Farnham, piano, Rufus Reid, bass, and Tim Horner, drums and percussion - the perfect set of superb musicians that supply all the atmosphere and zest Hooker sets in her styling. She has an incredible vocal range, able to carry her irresistible scat singing into the stratosphere (as in 'You'd be so nice to come to') while at the same time dipping into the contralto range for her special imprints on songs such as 'The other side of the sun'.

This is a well balanced album, one that allows us to sample the many aspects of Hooker's talent. She is clearly a force to contend with and it is rewarding to finally have a CD that will bring her to the appreciation of a wider audience. Lauren Hooker is right where she belongs - here!
