With Boxer, the National have reached four albums into their increasingly lauded career, never hurrying the tempo, never over-reaching in volume or instrumental density. Instead, the quintet's balanced on a pin, emotionally austere, if not utterly downhearted, finding brilliantly dusky ways for Matt Berninger's lovelorn voice to mesh with a pair of unobtrusive guitars and, here, an occasional phalanx of piano, horns, and strings. The tunes roll off slowly, Berninger's lyrics hugging the instruments with a sad brawn, rough-hewn as the drums and bass toy with angularity (try "Mistaken for Strangers," for one) but end up woven by that voice. Drummer Bryan Devendorf presses the songs forward repeatedly, as on "Start a War," where he gently thumps the time as the acoustic guitars frame and dot the melody, coalescing as the drums starkly chisel the melody. Nary a distortion pedal is harmed on Boxer, giving the National a magnetism so forlorn that you can't stop listening. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

The follow-up to 2005's "Alligator" is filled with lush arrangements and sees the band incorporating new instrumentation and expanded musical elements such as piano, trumpet, and more prominent background vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Best of 2007, their best album too.......2007-07-30

Along with Canada's The Besnard Lakes and Stars, The National are by far above the rest of the musical spectrum this year. But not only have they outdone other bands: compared to their previous works, "Boxer" scores easily as their best album too.

While their sound will remind you of numerous other groups (Joy Division, Radiohead, The Cure, Interpol), Matt Berninger's voice gives them a uniqueness that you will long for while the album is out of your reach.

5 out of 5 stars best album from a great band.......2007-07-25

I don't listen to much mainstream music (preferring orchestral) but I gave The National a listen because the members are friends of my brother. I loved their music, which amazingly seems to get better with each album. Boxer continues this trend.

There are plent of comments above about the music, so I would like to comment on the lyrics, which I think demonstrate a far greater maturity than what one typically hears on the radio. There's a focus on the mundane of everyday life and frequent poetic abstract imagery that makes it very fun to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic and lush.......2007-07-22

I'm a new fan of The National but the strength of this album has convinced me to get their back catalog. Having just heard snippets of different songs I was unprepared for how much stronger their songs are in the context of the whole album. The first time I popped the album in I was taken back by the deep baritone of Matt Berninger's voice coming through my speakers. Ten seconds later the deep hypnotic drawl of his voice had grabbed me and dragged me deep into the National's sonic landscape. "Fake Empire" starts out catchy and strong and while the drums initially sound as if the drummer is pounding away to the wrong song, it quickly coalesces into one of the best tracks on the album. Another early favorite is the quiet, beautiful "Start a War" with one of my favorite chord progressions of all time. Overall the whole album is a somewhat subdued affair although the phenomenal drumming of Bryan Devendorf drives the music forward with intensity and urgency. Easily a pick for one of the top 10 best of 2007.

5 out of 5 stars slow show.......2007-07-22

"29 years" ago (Slow Show)... actually, 3 years ago I came upon this majestic piece of music craftmanship titled "Wasp Nest" while surfing the Net. Wow! Ithought to myself what a great song that was, champagne glasses and all. Come this year, I stumbled upon this beatiful CD titled Boxer by the same band who wrote "Wasp Nest". Honestly, it is just absolutely perfect. I rarely buy CDs lately, but The National has done such a magnificent piece of art which made me reconcile with all the lost feelings I had about the music industry these days.... hands down, this is the CD to buy this year thus far. My prediction is that it will occupy the number #1 spot in many critics' lists at the end of the year (alongside LCD and Feist.) Well done guys! Keep up the good work!

5 out of 5 stars Speechless..........2007-07-20

I had heard Alligator and thought it was great, but....
From start to finish this is the most excellent, most wholly beautiful album I have heard in a long long time.
THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. bar none.
The first time and everytime after I listen to this I feel as though I have been hit by a bus.
I just didn't think music could make feel like I did when I was young(er) but I was wrong.

Another review broke the album down song by song. Read it. Buy it. See the One-Click and Add To Cart buttons in the top right? Pick one. Do it. I put this album on and I just sat back and listened. Just let the album HAPPEN and you won't regret it. Listen and find out what sell out houses all over the country have found out...that Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers are the best band, live and in the studio, that you NEED to hear and experience! They just get better and Better and BETTER with each record and performance. Glassjaw Boxer is testament to that. You hear and feel each emotion on each song. I dare you not to be moved by the emotion on 'Father's Day', one of the stand out tracks from Glassjaw Boxer. It's a rare trait when a band can take you along with them on an album and make you feel like you belong. It's been two years since their last album Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers but the wait is over and it has been WELL WORTH IT!!! The SK6ers have hit their stride with this album and they are bringing their fans along with them. 5 out of 5 stars Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers Win the Fight by Knockout with "Glassjaw Boxer".......2007-07-10

The musical journey for Stephen Kellogg has been a long and winding road. With his latest effort "Glassjaw Boxer," Kellogg shows his maturation as a songwriter through his most personal lyrics to date. Backed by the ultra talented and energetic Sixers, "Glassjaw Boxer" is a fresh blend of Kellogg's emotional lyrics and the Sixers' harmonic backing vocals, mixed in with rich musical arrangements. Building from their previous self-titled release, Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers make an even stronger claim to being a relatively unknown band that deserves both attention and respect. The album plays out as such:

1. Sweet Sophia- 9/10
A piano driven rock song that starts off the album in true Kellogg form.

2. Glassjaw Boxer- 7/10
An uptempo and hopeful song about not giving up in the face of adversity.

3. Cabin in the Woods- 8/10
Another uptempo tune that showcases great backing vocals and an emotional chorus.

4. 4th of July- 9/10
One of the best songs on the cd. A beautiful ballad, almost written in the form of a diary entry.

5. Sweetest Goodbye- 9/10
Piano driven song with beautiful lyrics and a great melody.

6. In Front of the World- 8/10
A softer song that has become a staple at Kellogg's amazing live shows.

7. Milwaukee- 8/10
Another piano driven tune that picks up the pace with strong melodies.

8. Father's Day- 8/10
An emotional ballad in which Kellogg is at his best, both lyrically and melodically.

9. Hearts In Pain- 10/10
The best song on the album in my opinion. This song starts out with a touching piano solo before giving way to Kellogg and his amazing lyrics about a broken marriage. "What would you say if I told you so true, that I love you more now that our marriage is through." This song alone is enough of a reason to purchase this album.

10. Why Are You Talking To Me?- 7/10
While not one of the best songs on the album, this uptempo song helps balance out all of the ballads preceeding it.

11. Big Easy- 9/10
A great way to close off the album. Featuring vocals from both Kellogg and drummer Brian "Boots" Factor, this song epitomizes what Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers represent, a band that truly enjoys their profession. The close bond that these artists have formed is evident, both on their albums and at their highly entertaining live shows.

Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers may currently be the best band that no one has heard of. But whether or not they ever become as big as they should be, one thing is for certain, these boys will continue to do what they do best, and that is to entertain and spread the passion they each have for music, something that you don't see as often as you should because of the corporate stranglehold on the music industry. So keep up the good fight Sixers, I have you ahead on my card.

4 out of 5 stars The U.S. version of 'The Boxer' single.......2005-07-20

This is the U.S. version of the CD single. It contains two tracks which were previously released on import CD singles for 'Believe'. However, the tracks from the import version of 'The Boxer' single are pretty much the same as on this U.S. single.

The CD track listing is as listed below:

    1. The Boxer (Album Version)
    2. The Boxer (DFA Version)
    3. Giant
    4. Spring
    5. Believe (Matthew Jonson Remix)
    6. Believe (Erol Alkan's 'Feel Me' Re-Work)
    7. Galvanize (Abe Duque Remix)

'Giant' is a B-side taken from 'Believe' Pt. 2 import CD single. The 'Believe' (Erol Alkan's Re-work) is taken from 'Believe' Pt. 1 import single. The 'Galvanize' (Abe Duque Remix) and the 'Believe' (Matthew Jonson Remix) are released exclusively for this U.S. single. However, all the edits, extended versions and remixes are also available on i-tunes. Edits are kinda annoying, but you can download them if you'd like.

This U.S. single is also available on a limited edition double 12" LP and the track listings are slightly different than what it appears on the U.S. CD single. The B-sides are the true gems on this single and are worth your money.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but still gritty and beautiful.......2002-12-25

We've come to expect dramatic film scores to have an Oscar-nominated love theme. So, when we don't get one, it feels like the score fell short of its potential. Still, the depth of mood and funkiness of the beats keep this album from being mediocre. Friday and Seezer take some liberties with the score, and I wish they'd left in some of the briefer cues (such as Danny's reunion with Ike). Of course, I'm being a stickler because "The Boxer" is one of my all-time favorite films.

The inclusion of film dialogue is a definite plus, and most effective in track nine ("Peace"). It isn't done as well in "You Broke My Heart"; they should've used Maggie's full soliloquy. It's almost like the "Moulin Rouge" soundtracks - the music worked as is onscreen, so let it be. I'm just glad they didn't resort to the loathsome techno-remix ploy that pops up on some soundtracks.

This score strikes a good balance between orchestral melancholy and urban trip-funk. Sometimes, the two styles merge ("Everything's Gonna Be Alright," "In The Shadow of A Gun"). The purely orchestral pieces have an Anne Dudley appeal.

It's pretty hard to get your mitts on this disc. If you enjoy Baz Luhrman's scores and/or Gavin Friday's solo work, the "Boxer" soundtrack is worth the hunt.

    5 out of 5 stars More than a soundtrack........2002-07-03

Classical Music by Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer, what more is there to say? Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer are proboly the best music duo ever. They have brought poetry back to music, in a very buitiful way. If I could review thier three albums now they would all get 6 out of 5 stars, yes thats how good they relly are. But in the mean time, there are only a few ways to get thier music here in the states. Soundtracks, (like the Boxer, In The Name Of The Father, Romeo and Julliet, and Mission Impossible) all showcase thier art.
Now to this album. It is very nice classical, even for the most moddest music listener. My favorit part is how well the coincided the storyline with the music. it is also surpising to see how good they use dialog in movies. The album also has very nice Irish thems to it, its hard to explane, just buy the album, before it is discontinued.

4 out of 5 stars It's as the editorial review says..........2000-03-26

This is a wonderfully atmospheric score; Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer are possibly the most underrated thing in music. If you can find their three albums (EACH MAN KILLS THE THING HE LOVES, ADAM 'N' EVE, and SHAG TOBACCO), do so. But where each of those albums had at least one tour-de-force piece of music to rally around, THE BOXER lacks one -- just as is mentioned above. "In The Shadow Of A Gun" is powerful, but sounds just like every other intense movie theme song, and "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" is almost obnoxiously uninvolving. The instrumentals are varied and fascinating, but almost all end before their chance at greatness. A beautiful but frustrating soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Artists Friday & Seezer Score Again!.......1999-08-17

THE BOXER soundtrack is perfect eclecticism, as ambient music; something to set a mood. I own a vast collection of eclectic music, and I must say this is one of the best eclectic scores I've heard in a while. There is true sentiment and talent evident in the work, and while dialogue excerpts in soundtracks can sometimes be annoying, the quality of genius from SHAG TOBACCO musicians Seezar & Friday make the soundtrack an experience all its own. THE BOXER soundtrack will provide endless pleasure for your lifestyle, from an early rise with the Choir arangements to slumber time with its heart-gripping strings and passive melodies. A must have for collectors of film soundtracks, as I am.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most impressive debuts in years!.......2007-05-26

Once in a great while a band will come along that is able to take you on a sonic journey that is at once exhilarating and melancholic all at once, a journey of sounds and sights, tearing at the heavens, just out of reach.

It's hard to discuss The Boxer Rebellion without drawing comparisons, merely as a point of reference to the (regrettably) far too few to have discovered this incredible four-piece out of the London music scene.

When I first heard TBR, all I could think was, I have heard this before, and it was all too familiar, yet so new and refreshing at the same time. Combining so many sounds, from the acoustic melancholy of The Church, the anthemic soaring sounds of early U2, the bombastic bravado of early Oasis, with a bit of "Filter" lite industrial riff thrown in, well, what's not to like?

"Exits" is the first full-length studio album by TBR, and even though TBR had found some success in the UK, due to stellar tracks like the throwaway rocker "Code Red", or club favorite "Watermelon", "Exits" stands as an intriguing journey from beginning to end, with the band building a wall of sound so enormous, any musicians of lesser talent would have the walls tumbling down around them.

While not perfect by any means, it has come as close as anything I have stumbled on in recent years.

The album opens with "Flight" and "All You Do Is Talk", two tracks that bleed into one another, filled with a menacing riff, and more menacing lyrics. A clarion call to "Stand and Fight" if you will.....the band is in top form from the first distorted feedback on "Flight".....

Things slow down on "We Have This Place Surrounded", my favorite track on the album. Melancholic, ethereal, full of passion and longing, desperate reaching, a house of ghosts, crying to the heavens for salvation, this has to be one of the single best tracks I have heard in a very long time, by any band! Building into a "wall of sound" crescendo, you won't want it to end.

It does however, and launches into "Watermelon", the only track from their earlier EP to make it onto the debut album, with a catchy beat and riff, makes for a great dance track, and picks the album tempo back up.

"The New Heavy" is next, and does not slow the journey down, reminiscent of early, bombastic Oasis, it is a decent track, but to me at least, feels strangely out of place on the album, and is my least favorite track.

Things come to a screeching halt in "World Without End", a beautiful, nocturnal ballad. It definitely has a dream quality to it, and has grown on me.

"Never Knowing How or Why" is my second favorite track on the album, and is another track that builds itself into an anthemic frenzy, sounding a lot like earlier, inspired, and fresh U2, it's an incredible song that will leave you wishing it were longer.

"Lay Me Down" is a nice follow-up, and brings back memories of The Church, with nicely layered guitars, a melancholy beat, and a sustained mood throughout.

"Cowboys & Engines" is a catchy little tune, excellent lyrics; this is a tight track that gets better with multiple listens.

"The Absentee" is an excellent closing track, forlorn, melodic, with a nicely layered keyboard and guitar, building to a fulfilling end of the journey.

"Exits" certainly leaves its mark, and as a debut release, this makes it all the more impressive with the amount of talent TBR has right out of the gate. They are putting the finishing touches on their new album, and if any of the preview tracks are an indication, they have certainly taken it to the next level, and I would expect everyone will be hearing from TBR soon enough....

    4 out of 5 stars A new British sound.......2005-06-08

Coldplay is dead, and the Boxer Rebellion killed it.

Combining the bombast of early Oasis, the shimmering guitars of Six by Seven and Swervdriver and an American predilection for noise, the Boxer Rebellion live up to their name on this album by being punchy (forgive the pun) and peeling away from the fey sound of the British Isles (Coldplay, Travis, Belle and Sebastian, Embrace).

"Flight" and "All You Do is Talk" layer guitars, bass and electronics on top of each other until the songs threaten to topple over completely. That they don't is a tremendous credit to the band. "Flight"s guitars wash onto shore and build a wall of shimmering sound, but the leaping bass is the key. "All You Do is Talk" takes the same formula and adds a little bit of shambolic jangle to come up with an instant classic. "The New Heavy" sounds *exactly* like something Six by Seven might do, but I'm not complaining. The band slows down for a moment on "We Have This Place Surrounded," showing a calmer, more atmospheric side that suits it well.

To be sure there are moments of Coldplay-like emoting here ("Lay Me Down," "The Absentee") but the band never dips into the woe-is-me-alone begging that Coldplay has fallen in love with. "Lay Me Down" and "The Absentee" both stretch over the course of five minutes and each builds steadily into a cathartic apex.

Boxer Rebellion main man and U.S. ex-pat Nathan Nicholson should be praised for fleeing the States and taking America's music ethos across the pond to the stale British scene.

Is EXITS merely the name of the album or the band's statement of purpose? Is it just a title or are the quartet heading to the airport and boarding a plane for a US scene that will embrace it? Who knows, but this album will give you something great to listen to while the band decides.

I am in London and just found this disc. WHAT A SOUND! I would call it "Coldplay with an edge and meaning." It is fresh, hard, melodic, driving. For those of you wanting to be on the cutting edge of new music, I highly recommend this CD.

        Product Description

The mighty dreadnoughts and battle cruisers of Kaiser Wilhelm II's navy sail again in this magnificent, first-ever compilation from Brandenburg Historica! This TWENTY-FIVE-TRACK CD presents the marches and songs of the golden age of German sea power, with PERIOD performances by illustrious units of the Imperial German Navy and leading military- and civilian ensembles of the German Empire. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" features not only the most famous parade- and presentation marches from the core repertoire of the Kaiser s "High Seas Fleet", but also many forgotten treasures of nautically flavored German martial- and patriotic music. Included here are period pieces celebrating the First World War-era exploits of the SMS Emden, Otto Weddigen s U-9 and the raider SMS Moewe; a 1907 recording of the "Flag Parade" of the Imperial German Navy (complete with drill commands and including the "Hollaendischer Ehrenmarsch", which was designated as the presentation march for all naval units by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1901); and a super-rare 1915 version of Hermann Loens battle song, "Wir fahren gegen Engelland", set to a score that has been completely overshadowed by Herms Niel's famous setting of that song from 1940. In addition to these rarities, the album features numerous German naval marches and concert band pieces of the Imperial era that are endowed with a distinctive maritime ambience, but are virtually unknown to today's listeners The performances assembled in this compilation were originally recorded between 1907 and 1917, and though the extremely rare early discs from which they have been transcribed date from the acoustic age of recording (that is, before the invention of electric microphones and pick-ups), they have been laboriously restored and reengineered to maximize the considerable fidelity already inherent to them without altering their historical authenticity in any way whatsoever. "Hoch Deutschlands Flotte!" is accompanied by a TWENTY-FOUR PAGE BOOKLET (lavishly illustrated with many rare, never-before published photographs) which features detailed historical notes on the development of the Imperial German Navy during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, its musical traditions and the background of the featured musical selections.

Brandenburg Historica deserves much credit for releasing this and other historical CDs. The music sounds great and the booklet is very well-done and informative. Anyone with an interest in military music should certainly get this. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable trip into history.......2007-07-03

This is a very creditable work that preserves music of a bygone era. Original recordings are used to give an exact reproduction of the sounds of military music of the Kaiser's navy. Particularly interesting was the track where the U-9 march went off into a verbal reenactment of the U-boat attack.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn' t come any better than this.......2007-06-26

The folks at Brandenburg Historica have done it again with Hoch Deutschlands Flotte. Twenty five (25) exceptionally re-mastered original 78 rmp recordings of navy marches, songs and other music, many by naval and seebattalion(marines)bands of the Kaiser's Navy. As with Brandenburg Historica's prior albums, the 19 pages of album notes and photographs are outstanding and second to none I have seen. It's a class act and does not get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Hoch Deutschlands Flotte, a musical journey in to the past .......2007-06-17

I just finished listening to this CD and it is a real gem. A rare look back at what the German navy was like in the Glory days of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany. Any one that is a Military Music enthustiast and/or interested in the history of this time period should not pass up this treasure. All the selections on this CD are first rate.

How good is boxer? Lets do a comparison. Boxer is as much better as blink 182 as blink 182 is better than Brittany Spears. Oh yeah, they're that good. Lyrics that make you cry. music that makes you wonder. Wonder why this band ever called it quites. Jesus they rock. You think you've heard good music from your favorite band? prepare to be blown away. One cd. Better than all the others i own. Timeless, priceless...as long as you have [price].

Boxer's The Hurt Process is a cd that if you are remotely interested in punk/emo/hard rock you need to buy immediately. Produced by Trever Keith of face to face, this Boston quartet delivers scorching guitar riffs, bass lines that produce a smile in major depressives, and vocals that really can't be described. The singer, Dave Vicini, goes up and down at a hundred different tempos with his words. An amazing singer who should be destined for greatness. The production by Keith is tight, it really blows away his work on the newest ftf Ignorance is Bliss. The band plays together immaculately. At first listen you will be attracted to boxer. It will make you come back for more, until you reach the point wherein all the good songs are ingrained in your head forever. You probably haven't heard anything that sounds like Boxer (unless you're one of the few who has heard Lifetime, the Jersey five-piece, who is obviously Vicini & Company's biggest influence). And we may never again, with Boxer having broken up some time ago. But the rumors now say Vicini and Will Kerr (the bassist and chief music writer) have formed a new band entitled Lot Six. I am hoping that album comes out soon, and they keep the intensity intact. It will be tough to replace the guitarist, who does rip some scorching lines, but Vicini and Kerr will hopefully put out a good cd in the new decade (I'm still waiting for one to arrive). Get this cd NOW!.

        5 out of 5 stars Boxer Rocks.......2000-02-04

Although Boxer might sound like Lifetime with a hint of Weston at first listen, they are a great band. Their lyrics are from the heart and emotional. "Blue and Grey" is fast, loud, and catchy all at the same time. Other tracks like "Georgia" and "Shorepoints" have more of a radio-friendly sound. A solid album throughout...buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Great album; fans of Lifetime will love Boxer........1998-11-29

While the lead singer's voice is similar to Ari's from Lifetime, and Boxer is obviously influenced by Lifetime, they are by no means a Lifetime clone. There are traces of All, the Decendents and even Poison (begining of "Georgia") on this record, but all of the influences blend together to make an original, emotionally charged sound that seperates them from the pack. This is the type of record you listen to striaght through (not unlike Jersey's Best Dancers), so picking a standout track is sort of hard, but I'd say "You and Me" is probably the catchiest.
