3 out of 5 stars A history lesson, yes. Not as enjoyable as Traveler........2007-06-12

If you are looking for the polished way the Traveler album appropriates retro groves and mingles them with updated beats and vocals, you're in the wrong place.

If you want to see where Mr. LN got his start, this will show you how far he has come.

4 out of 5 stars The Essence of Detroit House.......2003-08-12

If I did not know it there is no way I would believe this guy (St. Germain) did not grow up in Detroit. His original influences must have been based out of the detroit Techno house scene (MayDay & Innercity). The song "Prelusion" is by far the best track on this cd but the other tracks (maybe not as smooth or jazzy as what we would get from St. Germain's later releases) are certainly up to par. This is a mid to uptempo house album that is definitely worth purchasing.

4 out of 5 stars A Deep House History Lecture by St. Germain.......2001-12-29

There are no doubts the influence which St. Germain (aka Ludovic Navarre) has had with his releases Tourist and Boulevard. From Detroit to St. Germain shows us a little about the beginnings of Navarre's musical background.

This album is primarily straight-up house music and not filled with the jazzy-french sounds which have come to personify St. Germain. There are certainly highlights to the ablum including "Walk So Lonely", "Prelusion", "Move", and "Deep In It". Soul Salsa Soul is probably the lynch pin of the album with it's fusion of Latin jazz-rhythms and house music; it is the song (along with "Deep In It") which most closely resembles Navarre's current work. [NOTE: no other tracks from this album made it to his latest releases besides "Deep In It"]. The songs on this album which I enjoyed the most were those where Navarre collaborated with the musicians who appeared on his later releases.

St. Germain fans will enjoy this album - primarily because of the straight-up house/dance music - as well as for the glimpse into the past which it provides. If you have not experienced St. Germain I recommend starting off with either Tourist or Boulevard. Bottom line: All St. Germain fans should seriously consider getting this album.

4 out of 5 stars ludovic navarre aka ST-GERMAIN !.......2000-08-02

For those who recently tuned into the maestria of ST-GERMAIN,check out this album. It supposedly came out in 1991,is deffinitly more house then the acid jazz that was to follow with "boulevard"and the recent "tourist",but there is deffinitly a vision for things to come. Some of it can possibly remind the listener of CARL CRAIG's INNERZONE ORCHESTRA.Some of it could have escaped the NUYORICAN SOUL recording sessions. The sound is high and the groove is deep.Placed back in the context of it's original release date,it makes this album the legitimate predecessor for anything from deep house to acid jazz, and even when you get the occasional old school flavor,it never leaves an aftertaste.

4 out of 5 stars Deep, jazzy chilled-out house music - Excellent.......1999-10-07

Ludovic Navarre has inspired countless deep house producers with his releases on F Comms and FNAC Music. This collection embraces an astounding spectrum of influences from jazz, techno, blues, afrobeat and latin music to be one of the finest house releases this year. 'Alabama Blues' combines touches of ambient house with blues, while 'Move' and 'French' are more techno-influenced. 'Modus Vivendi' remains a classic. In short, this album will appeal to a wide variety of house and techno music fans and is the perfect antidote to the flood of 'This Is Ibiza Trance Anthems Vol. 95'-type records released so far this year.

4 out of 5 stars House/Funk/Groove and is wery good.......1999-09-03

"Ludovic Navarre, together with Laurent Garnier and Shazzwas one of the originators of the French electronic music scene. Since'91, under various pseudonyms(SUB SYSTEM,DEEPSIDE,MODUS VIVENDI,St GERMAIN and more...) he was instrumental in initiating the techno and jazz-house side of the French scene. His entire early works have not been available since demise of the FNAC MUSIC - DANCE DIVISION in '94. This album represents his quintessential works on FNAC MUSIC & F COMMUNICATIONS from '92 to '96 and gives a comprehensive view of the amazing quality and diversity of his talent. We all look forward to more from Ludovic Navarre... soon!"

Album Description

In 1998 after three years of silence, St. Germain returned with a compilation of all his best pieces that were released by FNAC music and F Communications from 1992 to 1996. This panorama of sound gives us a clear picture of his incredible diversity and the quality of his talent. From Detroit to St. Germain allows us to re-discover his compositions for Dance Division, which have become very scarce as the original vinyl releases are no longer available, and not re-released since FNAC Music closed in 1994. True talent is rare and now finally sees wider availability in the U.S. Together, these albums further reveal an artist to be both acknowledged and cherished! 12 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Detroit Progressive Gem.......2003-08-29

All I can say is check out cut number 5 "Prelusion"! It seems as if St. Germaine is originally from Motown and changed his name from MayDay "Derrick May". It makes no sense that we have not heard more from him in this arena not that "Tourist" is bad because it is everything one can expect from a midtempo acid jazz styled album (a 4 star album indeed) but being from Detroit I appreciate the way St. Germaine represented Detroit Techno. He took me back to "The music institute" (a popular Detroit Nightclub in the late 80's). If you like Detroit techno with a hint of culture & style get this album.

I really liked Tourist and Boulevard, and wanted to keep exploring Ludovic Navarre's interpretations of jazz, house and blues and gave this one a try. It was well worth the money! This album is more blues/house oriented, and was recorded on the heels of the techno explosion in Europe. With creative collaborations with other French DJ's on this album, we see a different side of St. Germain. The sound is less produced (as Boulevard)and funkier than Tourist. Less jazz, more dance oriented. Especially "Alabama Blues". I found myself listening to it over and over again, falling in love with the samples of harmonicas and deep south blues vocals, with a dash of female pop samples to make it a delicious combination of funky house and techno. You must get this record! Tres Bein St. Germain!

4 out of 5 stars good!.......2001-07-10

If you were expecting jazzy music like that of Tourist--IT IS very different. More like house music. That said, This album is VERY good. As with all compilations, there are one or two I could do without but on the whole, amazing! The First three tracks are really good dance tunes (Especially Walk So lonely --for those of you from New York--remember the Shelter --and "Black Betty"--this is like it)...The Cd had me dancing around my living room! There is a good latin jazz/house #-called Soul salsa Soul as well.
