The third release in a series already made noteworthy by legendary DJs Frankie Knuckles and Francois K, Choice concentrates on the classics. Perhaps no DJ on Earth is better equipped to decide what deserves that status than Danny Tenaglia. As the extensive and fascinating liner notes for this two-CD collection make clear, his breadth of knowledge sweeps up electro, soul, Afrobeat, and everything else under the sun that falls under house music's broad domain. The history lesson is taught against the background of Tenaglia's early memories: first hearing Cat Stevens's "Was Dog a Doughnut" on a Larry Levan mix tape, having his mind blown at 10 years old by African trumpeter Hugh Masekela. But Tenaglia has limited use for pointy-headed name dropping, and so succeeds brilliantly with the task at hand using a mix of wide-ranging moods, textures, and genres. He may just be cleaning out his closets, but a man of Tenaglia's exceptional taste leaves few scraps for the local Goodwill. --Matthew Cooke

2 out of 5 stars not much energy on this one...subdued tenaglia.......2005-05-20

A dance mix that begins with a slow groove by Cat Stevens? This is not a best of Danny Tenaglia mixes, it's a best of Danny Tenaglia's favorite dance tracks, from over 3 decades. He mixes and segues the varying style quite well, but this stuff just isn't a great house party. Some scratching and popping is noticed on a few of the records he spins as well (after all, some of the records are probably nearly 20 years old) It does include some big names in dance music-Mr. Lee, Nomad, Two Tons o Fun, Adeva, Frankie Knuckles, Jomanda, but do expect for the styles to be over the map. Track times are:

CD1:

1) was dog a doughnut (4:13)
2) changes (6:51)
3) shine (7:01)
4) as one (4:55)
5) love me forever or love me not (6:25)
6) I believe (7:20)
7) not gonna do it (7:59)
8) I can't forget (5:05)
9) I Wanna Give you Devotion (6:27)
10) Make it Right (5:03)
11) elevation (7:03)
12) just us (4:54)

CD2:

1) outta limits (4:29)
2) on the floor 7:40)
3) don't go lose it baby (7:39)
4) give me your love (6:44)
5) independent woman (5:58)
6) rushin (7:42)
7) the whistle song (8:15)
8) I want to thank you (4:31)
9) por favor (1:16)
10) make my body rock (6:27)

4 out of 5 stars Time warp..........2004-09-28

First key to loving this. Don't expect Athens, don't expect London. This is old school. Think early 80s. Think Rapper's Delight. Think Afrika Bambaata. Think the roots of hip-hop meet the children of disco meet the roots of the club sound. It's subtitled 'A Collection of Classics' for a reason. You remember the sound - a simple drum machine beat, repetitive, simple. Yet, this is classics with a twist, as only Mr. Tenaglia can. It's layered, textured, subtle and smooth.

I didn't like this at first. But I forced myself to listen to it. Glad I did. Leave your expectations behind and just listen and see if you don't find yourself tapping your toes and bouncing just a little bit. Retro with a twist, classics with a smile. A nice mix.

1 out of 5 stars Are you serious?.......2003-10-14

These are the worst CD's I have ever bought. The only reason I gave it a star is because I couldn't rate it any lower. If I had to explain these CD's in one word it would be... TRASH...

3 out of 5 stars I must be getting old, I am buying a collection of classics.......2003-03-28

Ai, I actually remember when most of these tracks where first released and I sure as hell do not want to end up with a "best of" or "remember the (insert year)" collection.

I am not going to write a long review about this CD. I think it probably will be a good buy if you want to travel back in time and recapture the spirit of the early 90's - late 80's house scene. This also might be fun to listen to if you are interested in house-music and want to learn a bit more about how it actually developed over the years. However, if you want to learn more about what influenced Tenaglia himself, your better bet is his back to mine compilation. In all other cases, I think you might be a bit disappointed with this purchase.

2 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!.......2003-02-28

Yeah it's a revelation man! I loved it totally!

    Album Description

Azuli Records' Choice series is fast becoming a who's who of influential figures in dance music, with previous releases by legendary artists such as Jeff Mills, Louie Vega, Derrick Carter, Danny Tenaglia, X-Press 2, Frankie Knuckles, and most recently, John Digweed - where each artist communicates their own musical influences, history and experience with their fans.

A good DJ's job is archaeologist, evangelist and salesman. Speak to Danny Howells for more than ten minutes and you'll know he fits the exact criteria. The tracks Danny has selected for Choice are not some rich tapestry of the history of dance music. This is his personal history - featuring tracks and remixes by Coldcut, Orbital, The Temptations, Urban Soul, PM Dawn, Todd Terry, Ce Ce Peniston, Japan, Sub Sub, Iron Butterfly, Fire Island and many more!

    [This edition is unmixed.]

1 out of 5 stars An Important FYI..........2007-07-10

Just in case you missed the fine print (as I did) this is the UNMIXED version. That is, the tracks are not blended together as in usual DJ mixes. They are standalone, and separate.

The page notes this at the very bottom of the text description. It's very easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

1-star just to make sure that it's clear. Otherwise Danny Howells is an incredible dj. One of the best in the world. And this is a great CD. The mixed version is also available elsewhere on the site, with an interview DVD.

    4 out of 5 stars Choice Cuts.......2007-01-13

International DJ, Danny Howells, fresh off of one of the best years of his career, is the latest artist to showcase his diverse range of tastes via Azuli Records' Choice Classics series, an ongoing project that finds influential musicians and asks them to compile all of the songs and tracks that have inspired them most over the years.

Disc 1 provides the most uniformity in this package, with its progressively smoother melding of genres. The record starts with some classic house samples, redolent with crooning R&B ("Alright" by Urban Soul) and alive with salsa back beats ("Carino 90" by T-Coy). The disc drives this energy forward, growing heavier and heavier, hitting near-techno levels of metallic fervency ("12 Min To Do It" by Pleasure Dome). Howells steadily reduces the amp on the final five tracks, keying down through the stomp-heavy "Hocus Pocus" (by the band of the same name) and into the gorgeous gull-call scenery of Ready For Dead's fluidly flavorful song of the same name.

The second disc is fun, as well, but also much more uneven, probably owing to its heavy helping of old school funk and rock. Howells attempts the same sort of seamless arrangement that he pulls off perfectly in Disc 1, but that's hard to do when you're trying to blend The Temptations' "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" into a three minute drum solo by Iron Butterfly (don't be fooled, "In A Gadda Da Vida" is on the track list, but all you'll hear is beats). This is passable, though, given the invigorating energy of the rest of the record. Sub Sub's high-pulse "Space Face" segues dreamily into Coldcut and Hexstatic's "Timer," one of the best deep house tracks I've heard in a long time. With the exception of "Why" by Carly Simon (a great tune that plays awkwardly as the closing track on this disc), the rest of the album is a rhythm-tribute to deep, funky house that will almost make you forget the earlier weak spots (which include the fourth track, Japan's "Ghosts," a synthetic pop number ruined by too much mood).

    1 out of 5 stars What!.......2006-08-21

Awful, what a waste of money, I didn't get it at all. Maybe 2 tracks which were OK. Hard to see how a DJ could use much of this material. Other reviewers seemed to like it, not me. I'll stick to GU's Howells offerings. Just my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Japan, Iron Butterfly and the Temptatons! .......2006-03-15

All in a row and it works really well... Very interesting combinations but moves and grooves... Super Choice!!! The GU Miami was great and this may actually be better...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent work, Mr. Howells, sir........2006-03-05

I guess disc 1 is one of those "you had to be there" kind of things, and since I wasn't there, it didn't really grab me. And then......disc 2. If you're familiar with Mr. Howells' work, you'll know that his best work has a cetain unnameable quality to it (think Day disc of Global Underground's 24/7). If you know what I mean, then you'll find what you think I mean in full display on disc 2 of this collection, know what I mean? It's deep, kinda creepy and excellent. I can't seem to stop listening to it, and I don't mind if I don't. Get this disc, you won't be sorry. Hell, get 24/7,too.

    3 out of 5 stars nice sound.......2002-10-14

this recording the purcell's wunderfull music sounds nice, but not more. h. reyne is a fine player but his intonation is not perfect even his sound is good but everytime on the same level. other recorder players like steger or marq are much better.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tuning.......2002-09-05

This is very good recording of very interesting music, not easy music anyway, at least if we talk about Dieupart, the Frenchman living in London. His style is pure orthodox French, always following the suite schema, including very amazing overtures, beautiful allemandes and some polyphonical giges. This suites are so well conceived that gain recognizance from Bach at the time. Is the kind of music to listen again and again and enjoy more and more as one gets into the stile. The playing of Hugo Reyne is expressive, absolutely in style, helped by warm tone and (well, I have to point it out) absolutely in tune. In the passpied of suite N2 he gives us an example of perfect French articulation, according with Hotetterre principles. To tell the truth I didn't enjoy the use of violin in Suite 3, which IMHO calls for a more introspective approach without artificial "ritornellos". Remarkable is the research work, leading them to the design and construction of a b' flat fourth used for the first time here (I remember the W.V. Hawe version with a b'' flat soprano fourth flute, sure best suited for a live concert not a cd, and of course all the "arrangements" for standard soprano).
The Purcell cd is the only "modern" recording (after 1980) in authentic old recorders. In fact it is so rare for a recorder player to have the opportunity to play at least once in his/her life an old instrument, and here we have a whole baroque consort (the legendary chester Bressan, the equivalent of Stradivarius) playing together, allowing us to appreciate the magnificent way their "voices" blend. The English recorder music is a whole universe partially unknown, and extremely rich, going from renaissance to high baroque. From the provincial taste, brought back to the city with the restoration, to the eclectic 1700 London musical scene, featuring many of the best musicians around the world working together.
The players in this cd are among the best and most renowned in the world, from the new and very interesting French school of recorder playing, focusing in color and expressivities. Is interesting to note here how close their style relate to Franz Bruggen. By the way there was a controversy about him been out of tune 30 years ago... Some day may be we can start a controversy about the piano been out of tune, or how awfully out of tune is a tempered major third, or about how can you be in tune and make vibrato all the time (is the way I feel after only 5 yrs of not listening romantic music)... not now, not here.
Enjoy the cd is really worth buying.

3 out of 5 stars out of tune recorders.......2002-04-07

Simply put, this is a highly mediocre recording. The music itself is perfectly nice - several of the Purcell works are quite memorable, and overall these are a fine representative sample of his chamber music, as well as that of the lesser known Dieupart. But this is weak recorder playing. They are frequently extremely out of tune - and I'm perfectly aware that baroque intonation can be quite different from modern intonation and that the recorder has even greater leeway with regard to this than many other instruments, but this is just plain out of tune - and their tone is husky and not always pleasant. The miking is too close as well. Skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Hollies club classic gets its due.......2005-09-27

I bought this for the inclusion of the 12" promo mix of The Hollies' "Draggin' My Heels", a great underground dance club track, that finally gets a legitimate release. Other good tracks on here, too.

    5 out of 5 stars I can relive my 20's now.......2005-04-13

Mr. Vega you have given me my fountain of youth. This is the type of music one can feel in order to get in touch of the music, in order to feel the music and let the music take control. That mix of Chocolate/Eddy Grant/Adonis brings tears to my eyes; Melting Pot is off the hook and the Clash PRIMO STUFF! Definate party. I have friends that have spoken of a lot of these tracks over the last 20 yrs and only you have put them all together on one disc. Bravo. You win my vote

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection but..........2005-02-01

Man I love this collection but the mixing renders this CD basically useless for a true collector. There is no excuse to cut a song to 1:22 minutes for the sake of blending. I'ts That East Street Beat is one of those rare songs that has never been released on CD. I was so happy to have this on CD but... Louie mutilated this fantastic track and cut it less than 2 minutes. On top of that he mixed it with the vocal version of Time Warp followed by the vocal version of no way back. Now if you hung out back in the Garage days you know that Larry only played the instrumental version. Also, the intro to Get On The Funk Train was cut. The hottest part of this track is the introduction. It starts with a whistle and builds into a fierce base coupled with the flawless vocals of the Birds of Paris sue, Stephanie, Sunny, Vicki and Joanne commanding you to "Get On the Funk Train" but again this was chopped by Mr. Vega. I gave this CD a 4 for content and a 2 for mixing. Still, some of these cuts are really hard to find in their full glory and so a mutilated version is better than none.

4 out of 5 stars Louie Vega's Favourite And Most Influential Dance Records.......2004-05-22

The Choice series are getting well-established in the field of dance music. Similar in concept to the Grass Roots series by the Strut label, Azuli's Choice has really grown during the past year (counting 3 releases since last July and one more from Jeff Mills is coming in June). And the cd booklet is always very informative, including a short biography and the DJ's comments on individual tracks.

Louie's set starts with a light disco track by Dr Buzzard. Not really my cup of tea, but this track gets very interesting towards the end and is mixed into the smooth "Standing Right Here". Both are very relaxing disco songs. Vega brings the tempo up a bit with "Stand On The Word", a track that clearly was an inspiration to the MAW sound. The track that follows is a real classic... "Going Back To My Roots" is pure bliss and it was even included in Danny Krivit's Grass Roots! Things turn slightly jazzy with D'Angelo's "Spanish Joint". Very smooth track. A funkier song comes up next, "Atmosphere Strut", also appeared in Tenaglia's Choice. "Don't Go Away" is another winner here, with sweet female vocals, which is mixed with the excellent "Melting Pot". It is evident that the mix has progressed to become a lot better towards the end. Whoever is familiar with MAW's work (Louie Vega and Kenny Gonzalez), have great respect for songs such as "You Can Do It (Baby)" featuring the jazz guitar master George Benson. 4 stars

The second disc is slightly better in my opinion and more dancefloor-oriented. I first heard "Bostich" in Disco (Not Disco) 2 by Joey Negro and Sean P, and I was instantly impressed by its vibe. The vocals are very nice, catchy and... fast. "Get On The Funk Train", as the title suggests, is a very funky tune. Moving on to the incredible "It's Good For The Soul" by Salsoul Orchestra, a very uplifting and melodic track. At this moment in the mix, Louie throws a very engaging and danceable track, Gino Soccio's "Dancer". "I Wanna Rock You" is another song with very nice vocals and melodic transitions. "No Way Back" is amazingly mixed with "Din Daa Daa" and both are pumping early house tracks. The melody in ESP's "It's You" is fantastic and the following track "Rich In Paradise" has a great bass line. Vega's Choice finishes off with a punk-vocal, yet very vibrant and dubby track by The Clash. All in all, I don't think that there is a single average track in this disc, thus 5 stars

Lastly I would like to bring some attention to the mixing, which is of course seamless (and I didn't expect anything less from Louie Vega), and has been performed live at his house! I'll give this compilation 4.5 stars, simply because Danny Tenaglia put together a more glorious collection of classics earlier in the series, still unsurpassed.

3 out of 5 stars Fills in some of the gaps on my collection.......2005-04-13

I was really excited to get this one but after listening, I am somewhat disappointed. Convertion and Cheryl Lynn, Candido, Billy Ocean and Change excellent choices; Sandee, SoulIISoul pretty good but the rest are warm up songs for other DJ's that know better. Not sorry I bought it but not happy with song selection

5 out of 5 stars Remember Back in the Day..........2003-11-26

      Remember Back in the Day...
when you would by an album and listen to it over and over and over? This is the first time since i was a teenager that that's exactly what I did... and continue to do. Da Knuckles man is pure genius. Period.

      5 out of 5 stars Godfathers taste.......2003-08-21

There is not much to say regarding this collection: If you know Frankie, the godfather of house, you definitely know you can trust him and his dj-experience since the 70's about what's HOT and what's NOT. - Worth purchasing if you are into deep (house),classics and disco.

4 out of 5 stars Frankie Knuckles - Collection of Classics.......2003-03-26

CD is good, and has a few memorable old school house jams-Back in the day Paradise Garage style songs. Was expecting just a tad bit more from the CD, but it is still worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Party Till You Drop.......2002-08-10

What more can be said about Frankie Knuckles. Growing up in Chicago during the (radio station) WBMX era, Frankie's was a household name. This cd set further demonstrates how that was possible. Not only was the sequencing of the songs brilliant but the mixing was right on -- especially on Disc One (where he has the unenviable task of beat matching disco records: that usually involves live instruments). Old School Househeads will really enjoy this double set!

      4 out of 5 stars Choice Cuts.......2007-01-03

This set also comes with a bonus DVD. It contains an interview (weirdly spliced and blurrily edited) of Danny Howell, as well as a thirty minute "visual audio mix" (the "audio" part is interesting and catchy -- a half hour track of mostly-typical house, but the "visual" part is a dull and repetitive animation sequence that mirrors the CD box cover -- basic colors and hovering record icons). There is also a track listing of all of the Choice albums prior to this one. The DVD is fun enough, but it is ultimately a footnote to this (mostly) exceptional collection of invigorating and almost-forgotten club-house tunes.

If you are true fan of house music ( not trance, hardhouse, happy hardcore, etc), then this is essential..this album is where all the influence happened for many house producers , today. The gem in this collection is the 'sought after' Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax 20 minute dub. Other than that , there is not one bad inch on this collection of VERY HARD TO FIND CLASSICS. If you are a DJ, try to get this on vinyl as well...THANX DERRICK FOR SHARING!!
