The Kings of Funk

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
True to BBE's tradition of releasing compilations compiled by Hip Hop and Soul’s most forward thinking producers, they have enlisted the Wu Tang Clan's RZA for the second installment of their new "Kings of" series. Along for the ride is the original "Legendary of Deep Funkster", DJ Keb Darge sharing duties on this 2xCD set of hard-to-find classics.

Keb Darge has been passionate about music since birth, in the 70’s, he was a regular visitor to legendary ‘Northern Soul’ (a term which is attributed to Godin) nights at The Wigan Casino, in the 80’s he turned his attention to funk, and is solely responsible for the Deep Funk movement. RZA is a member of Wu Tang Clan, an actor (Coffee & Cigarettes, Rhyme & Reason) and film composer (Kill Bill Vol I, Ghost Dog -The Way of The Samurai).

The Kings of... series releases are homages, not to ‘lost’ musical genres, but to music that ‘fits’ within a specific genre, which may have either been forgotten, or may only be remembered for the first time. This compilation serves up some of the most badass funk tunes you’ve ever heard!

Sometimes it takes a Sharon Jones to remind us that being a great performer is not necessarily the same as being a great Gap model, and vice versa. To believe the hype, exterior aesthetics kept this soul/funk singer from getting the recognition she deserved early in her career. Now she's pushing 50, but Naturally (Jones' second full-length album with the Dap-Kings) proves that she can still sing circles around just about anything in hot pants.

When it comes to running down the great songs on this CD, it's hard to know where to begin. "How Long Do I have to Wait for You" is as smooth and winning as the irresistible lovers Jones sings about on many of these tracks. Most of the material deals with matters of the heart, although Jones' rendition of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" reveals her political side. (In live performances Jones goes even further, singing a plan to stop paying taxes.) "Stranded in Your Love" is like a warm-weather version of "Baby It's Cold Outside." And the big romantic finish on this album, "All Over Again" must immediately be taken up as the new, must-play, wedding dance song. Naturally is a gift to R&B and should help the genre win new fans--with an album this infectious, you'd have to be made of stone to resist the funk. --Leah Weathersby

5 out of 5 stars You need to hear her version of "This Land is Your Land".......2007-01-10

New singer, climbed her way to the national scene late in life. She was working until recently as a security guard or something, but man has she got talent. The fact that she wasn't discovered until recently is an indictment against the record industry and their disproportionate interest in the "look" of singers. No, she's not pretty in the Britney Spears/Paris Hilton kind of way, but she has a simply gorgeous voice which she uses to sing R and B with a lot of funk and soul. If you like the old Motown sounds, or 70s funk, and who doesn't by the way, you can't help but love this CD. It's not just her remarkable talents, her band includes an excellent horn section, an impressive rhythm section, and a monster of a bass player who seems to be the band leader. Get this CD, check out the Daptone label for other funky soul r and b CD's you should have, and next chance you can, see the DapKings live. You ever noticed how race, ethnicity, age, nationality, social class, and sometimes even gender and sexual orienation segregates music audiences? Well it's the opposite with the old Motown sound, you start playing that stuff to just about any crowd and people start dancing and singing along. Same thing with this Sharon Jones stuff, in concert, they get an pretty diverse crowd of fans.

5 out of 5 stars A return to 60's&70's soul.......2006-11-05

As a longtime collector of 60's and 70's soul music, this compilation gives me hope that some artists and performers are still refusing to let
this style of music disappear.
This is serious bare bones, back to basics stuff.
The funk drives hard and the soul is sweet and danceable.
I love this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT !!!!.......2006-05-12

The fella from Leeds whose review is posted as the first one says it all. I just wanted to say how much i LOVE this excellent album and how i can't stop listening to it!!!! It's everything you want from music! It's just sheer joy and satisfaction of listening to a great tune and real musicians whose love for the music they're making shine through.

I love all the songs on it. My most favorites are My Man Is A Mean Man and Your Thing Is A Drag. I'm so happy i discovered great Ms.Jones and her equally great band! Do yourself a favor and check this out. I'm sure you'll end up buying it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Gimme an "S"! For SOUL........2006-01-29

Sometimes I think I'm the only person under 30 who really knows what soul is. But I had the very fortunate experience of seeing Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings live recently and half of the faces in the audience were as young if not younger than mine. Sharon dances without choreography and the Dap Kings jammed without synthesizers. This is music the way it was meant to be. The revolution might not be televised, but it will be on stage, sold on Amazon, and headquartered in Brooklyn.

5 out of 5 stars Sharon Jones acts natural..........2006-01-10

I love Sharon Jones! Her voice oozes soul and sass, and the Dap Kings back her with a groove that makes it impossible to stay still once you hear it. This is their second CD, and contains more ballad oriented material than their hard hitting first disc, "Dap Dippin". However, this disc is not lacking in grooves. "How Long Do I Have To Wait For You?" is so catchy its addictive. I have played this song so many times its not even funny. "This Land Is Your Land" is a VERY creative cover of the Woody Guthrie standard. Its a far cry from the original version! Also noteworthy is Sharon Jones' put down of a lover on "Your Thing Is A Drag". The band really lays down a groove on this one and Sharon Jones' vocals get the guy GOOD. If you liked the first album by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, you should definitely pick this one up, they continue to be the best funk band around.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Kings of Funk Reign Supreme.......2005-04-21

The second installment of BBE's "Kings Of..." series is a fine piece of work. It compares in a lot of ways to Keb Darge's "Funk Spectrum Series". Similarly the album's tracks are split up between Darge and a legendary guest. The songs are always hard to find obscurities that never really got much play when they were released. He's a certified perfectionist when it comes to digging up "lost" tracks - just check his track record on Amazon.

In the past Darge has teamed up with renowned crate-diggers/producers DJ Shadow and Pete Rock. For "Kings Of Funk" Darge shares the spotlight with the RZA, who is known for his use of uncommon samples from both music and films in his Hip-Hop productions. While the average music fan might not associate RZA for his crate digging abilities and more so for his involvement in the Wu-Tang Clan, any true head has known he's got a phenomenal ear for music. His sampling skills involve tracks so rare and implicit that they become almost unrecognizable amidst the full production.

All right, enough about their credentials... without a doubt this is an excellent collection of tracks, mostly thanks to the RZA's selections. RZA's disc (the first one) might be the best out of any in the "Funk Spectrum" series or for that matter any funk/soul compilations in the BEE catalogue. Of his 40 mins of funk, 95% is outstanding. Hank Ballard's "From the Love Side" gets the album off to a funky James Brown esq. kick-start. RZA's disc contains four incredible instrumentals: "Jasper Country Men", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Climax", and the 8 min epic "Melting Pot". The latter two are definitely the best, just straight up funky jam sessions. Ken Boothe shows some reggae/funk that Bob Marely would be proud of on "Because I'm Black". A live version of Lyn Collins' "Do Your Thing" is simply powerful (blowing the more familiar Isaac Hayes version out of the water!). Ann Peebles brings it all to a tremendous close on a track that's just laced with famous hip-hop samples (I recognize the guitar part in particular, but I'm still trying to figure out from where, I'll put it up soon).
Really the only fault is Sly & The Family Stone's "Small Talk", mostly because it suffers from a loud crying baby throughout its entirety. But, that small misstep aside, the RZA's disc is a perfect collection of rare funk tracks.
(Note: The track listing above is incorrect. Neither Jimmy Ponder's "While My Guitar" & the Ohio Players "Singing In The Morning" appear on either disc.)

Keb Darge's disc is pretty good. Most of the tracks on this disc fall in the middle of the road - laid back and chill. There aren't as many simply stunning stand out tracks like RZA's disc, but it serves its purpose quite nicely and is easily enjoyable. A few do make you stop and listen up. Sharon Jones's swagger hits the funky groove of "Genuine" to perfection. Zebra's "Simple Song" and MFSB's menacing "Family Affair" are two excellent instrumentals (excluding four lines in the former). The album also ends on two superb soulful jams "Will You Love My Child" and the memorable lyrics of Dee Edwards on "(I Can) Deal With That". The rest of the second disc is by no means weak, but to Keb's credit, he's been putting together collections for a number of years and has probably used his best offerings long ago. The remaining four, satisfy but aren't unforgettable.

BEE went the extra step and did a tremendous job with packaging "Kings of Funk". It has excellent liner notes, with full descriptions of the tracks as well as Keb's personal opinions on each. The two disc package costs as if it was only one. Both hip-hop sample heads and funk/soul fans will love this collection. So, you're probably running out of reasons not to get this album. Don't resist too much, cause it's one of the best collections of rare funk/soul tracks out there.

The RZA's Disc: (9.5/10)
Keb Darge's Disc: (8/10)

1 out of 5 stars kmk is done.......2007-04-28

if anyone wants to hear anything decent by kmk ever again, then they need to stop buying these monthly releases and wait for them to take some time and make a solid release. then again, i dunno if kmk even has it in them anymore...these boys are old and washed up...d-locs flow is pure garbage...i could barely make it through this album as he prattles on with no rhyme or reason. not only does he barely rhyme, he doesn't even follow the beat. johnny richter, who used to be the shining star of the group, seems to have hit the creative wall as well. his verses continue to get wacker and wacker. and dont get me started on daddy x... point being the kottonmouth kings are burned out, a fact which is not surpising considering the lifestyle they lead and the subject matter they dwell upon...there are only so many variations of the weed song to be written and they have covered them all. if you are new to this, don't fall for this commercialized garbage, check out some of kmk's old stuff - hidden stash 2 (phenomal album), high society, and rollin stoned. i doubt kmk will ever return to this form again.

1 out of 5 stars what?.......2006-09-20

OK this is officially the last Kottonmouth Kings cd I will buy. I'm not going to support them anymore. This isnt music people. I used to love KMK, because they had such a unique energy to thier songs. Albums like High Society, Hidden Stash Vol. 2, and Rollin Stoned were clearly when they were in their prime. These guys fell way off. Cmon, Daddy X is like 50 years old now and hes become the best lyricist in the group by default, but his voice is horrible and makes it annoying to listen to. Even Richters rapping is lazy. And I dont even want to talk about D-Loc dumbing it down; his new "single" from the subnoize souljas album might be the worst attempt ive ever heard this camp do. They seem like theyre trying to dumb it down so they can cross over into the mainstream. Heck, I was in a Journeys shoe store and the music video for "everybody move" came on. And thats cool, you gotta eat, but see you cant dumb down already dumbed down music. There are no stand out tracks on this album in my opinion. The opening track "wheres the weed at" is possibly the best song on the album but isnt even very good. Equipped with corny lines like "wheres the weed at, its in my back pack but you cant touch that", they just come off as idiots. Real hip hop and rap fans laugh at these guys. If they could mature over time and express more through thier albums, I would be feeling them so much more and could give them respect as artists. They have been around over 10 years now and still havent said much other than they smoke weed have sex and live the fast life; Any one can rap about that. And on the last recent few albums they have gotten less creative in expressing it. Listen to D-Loc on the song "Elevated Minds" (from the album High Society) and then listen to him on "Wheres the Weed at" and try to tell me his creativity isnt completely gone. I give them the one star for 2 reasons: because they didnt have any weak fake @ss punk attempts on this album (even though the other songs dont make up for it); and secondly because amazon makes you give a 1 star minimum. In closing, dont support them for doing what theyre doing because its all a front. They even said it, their raps a hustle. They hustlin you. Make them broke and maybe theyll come back real some other time. I agree with the reviewer before me who said they need to spend time on an album instead of dishing them out so quick.

If you are just getting into kottonmouth kings, I recommend any of the albums I mentioned before: High Society, Hidden Stash Vol. 2, and Rollin' Stoned

2 out of 5 stars Worst KMK album....why, oh why?.......2006-08-10

I was anticipating this album so much, but it really dissapointed me. The only good songs are Keep it Cali, Wheres the weed At, and Everybody Move. Everything else is pure [..]. Im sorry KMK but you gotta get back to your roots....what happened to the best album ever "Rollin Stoned"? That album was awesome...not one flaw. But this...I can't even begin to tell you whats wrong with this. Just slow down with the releases and take your time on an album. I was listening to KMK when they came out with Royal Highness and have been following them since. The last concert I went to on the Koast 2 Koast tour was kinda lame cause of the new songs...also the band has become commercial. I see everyone and their momma wearing spades and KMK shirts. Im not saying they don't deserve the fame, but keep the sounds underground with the flava man! Rollin Stoned was the best KMK release, so if your looking for some awesome KMK music, check out that album.

5 out of 5 stars pretty tight.......2006-07-14

this album is not bad.... the beats are good some songs aren't anything special, but tracks I like are "This my Club Song" "Iv'e Had it" Koast to Koast" and "Smile" ...check it out

2 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2006-07-03

It's an ok cd, it's better thatn no. 7 for sure, that cd sucked. however it's nowhere near old standards. for one, daddy x can't rap. i'm sorry, but he can't. also, Loc can't rap very well anymore either. Richter's the only one who can really rap still, but even he isn't as good as he used to be. anyway here's a song by song review, but i'm skipping the ones that aren't really songs.

1) Where's the weed at - cool beat, cool raps, only a matter of time before it's played out though. 5/5

2) This my club song - ok song. stupid chorus but ok verses. basic hip hop beat, sounds like Kingspade 3/5

4)Keep it Kali - awesome hip hop beat, cool raps, but too short. 4/5

5)I've Had It - this chorus sounds kinda weird but it's not that bad of a song. 3/5

6) Friends - don't like this song. they keep saying "friends" in the chorus and it's just annoying. 2/5

8) Everybody move - this is an ok song, nice beat that gets you moving. 3/5

10) Bong Toke - I like the chorus, it sounds pretty cool. the verses are ok too. 4/5

11)Irie Feelin - Pretty good song. the beat is really laid back and relaxing. the chorus is cool too. this song reminds me of Dog's Life more than Dog's Life part 2 does. 5/5

13) Neva Stop - This song sucks. the chorus is stupid. since when has KmK abandoned rapping in their choruses and started to just repeat 4 words? 1/5

14) No Regrets - This is an ok song. the beats and chorus is cool, except when he keeps saying No Regrets during the chorus. 2/5

15) Hustle - I like this song. The chorus is cool and catchy. the beat is too. good raps. 4/5

16) Smile - this song is stupid. i like that they are lovin life and are happy but this song is pretty damn corny. 1/5

18) Do the math - this song is ok. 2/5

19) Koast 2 Koast - this song isn't bad. Richter's part is awesome because he raps pretty fast, even if it is a little sloppy. the chorus is cool too. Loc's part is way to short though and X's part sucks. 3/5

20) Party - SKIP THIS SONG. the verses are ok, but the chorus is absolutely horrible. all he says is "a party, a party, we goin to a party" over and over. the only good thing is the beat 2/5

21) One Too many times - the chorus is ok. the beat is cool, the raps are ok. 3/5

22) Last Chance - This song is ok, i like the chorus and the beat is pretty cool. 4/5

23) Forever - Stupid song. "just me and you just me and you that's right." stupid chorus, another corny song. 1/5

24) Subnoize - 2 minutes of nothing really 1/5

Overall: 2/5

This cd is ok, but not their best obviously, High Society will always be my favorite. The things i don't like are: Loc and X can't rap, which sucks cuz Loc used to have some awesome raps (King's Blend), and their raps and songs are too short. most of the songs barely go over 3 minutes. i remember old KmK had most songs go over 4 minutes, and some even over 5. also, each King used to be able to rap by themself for a whole minute, if not more. The longest i heard Loc rap on this cd by himself was about 20-30 seconds. dude, Things I Do had 3 minutes of ONLY Richter rapping, and Built to Last had over 3 minutes of ONLY Loc rapping. how can the new stuff compare to that? also i LOVED when they used to rap back and forth (Round and Round, Good as Gold).

if you like big talk, so so raps, and ok beats, this is for you. if you like awesome raps, poetry in motion, awesome beats, and real effort, get High Society or Royal Highness or the Hidden Stashes.

5 out of 5 stars Last KMK C.D. you should buy..........2007-01-19

This C.d. is great and so are all the other ones released before it. While a couple songs on this c.d. could have been left out (the wannabe punk songs) the rest makes up for it. As far as I'm concerened, the two other c.d.'s released after this album are weak! (KMK Experience and Koast 2 Koast) Let's hope this trend doesn't continue, otherwise they lost a loyal fan!

4 out of 5 stars Kottonmouth Kings No. 7.......2005-11-11

The kottonmouth kings come out with their seventh installment in the KMK-Saga. Promoting their lifestlye(smokin pot, freedom ect. ect.) Because of their stances which stand quite far from our government's actual laws today of course they will stir up controversy. Old school KMK fans might be disapointed by the "mainstream-type" sound, but if you listen to their lyrics I think you will agree they will never be mainstream because they never plan to conform to mainstream standards. If they are put in the mainstream, as long as their message reminds true(and the same), I see it as them conforming the mainstream to them. Still rappin about legalizing freedom because freedom is still illegal makes perfect sense, and I hope these guys have as big of an impact on everyone else's life, as it did on mine.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great KMK Album.......2007-06-14

You get 36 chronic songs and a full-length DVD. This deal is off the hook.

You also get tracks with subnoize artists with KMK members.

5 out of 5 stars Is it the Best? No.... But not bad at all.......2006-12-04

Ok... Now I am not going to go out here and say its the greatest cd ever released by the Kings, but it is better than a lot of [...] that is getting released....

You have 2 cds, and a DVD full of contente. Sure the cds are not "KMK only", but that is because this was released as a way for the group to expose to people works that they had either never released or were done with the other SuburbanNoize Records artists... Unlike the other reviewer who said there are some songs on here that do not feature KMK artists he is wrong. Every song has at least one of the members of KMK on it...

As for tracks on here and even the last couple of albums sounding less punk that is not a bad thing. The Kings are able to go out with these tracks and pull in fans who are more 'hiphop' induced and pull them back into the "riphop" sound... The last few albums have been more underground rap than a lot of people like, but I am going to tell you this right now...

Kottonmouth Kings are still going to be around and they are adapting their style to the times... They have 'gangstad' out their style, but they are more rap; because they do know it sells and will get their message out and partied to a lot more...

by the way you can always listen to their older stuff if you have the cds... gott evolve and not sound the same all the time...

2 out of 5 stars What happened to the Kings?!.......2006-11-30

Man, this CD is not what I was expecting. After Rollin Stoned, they have been losing the punk - rock - rap style. Little guitar riffs and they changed it into underground rap. Kind of Crunk, underground rap. I guess it's more mainstream but I'd rather listen to their old stuff. High Society is their best Album. Rollin Stoned is pretty good too. Oh well, new sound but I'm still gonna go to their concerts cause they get the crowd rowdy!!! d[-_-]b

3 out of 5 stars Not exactly a KmK release.......2006-11-30

Ok this review isn't gonna be very long. First and foremost, this is more like a Subnoize Souljas release, because most of the songs feature other subnoize artists, and a lot of the songs don't even have the Kings in them. Anway, i took off one star for that reason. I was expecting a lot of KmK songs, especially a lot of old ones that hadn't been released yet. Unfortunately, there were only a few. And i LOVE High Society, i think the Kings were at their best back then. Anyway, i took off another star because a lot of these songs have already been released. I can name at least half or more of the songs from this cd that have been on a subnoize souljas cd. To me, that's just either getting lazy, or just an attempt to put out enough stuff as you can in order to make more money. It's still a good cd though, even though i don't listen to many other subnoize artists, cuz they don't really stand out to me. If you're just getting into KmK, get High Society.

Track Highlights in a best to worst order are: Still Smokin, Karma(which was obviously recorded during High Society, the Kings' peak), Police Story, and Gone Get High.

Kottonmouth Kings are the one-issue voters of hip-hop, eloquently answering the question of just how many ways a single crew can rap the praises of marijuana. Their second album, High Society, is as redolent of smoke as the stoners' van in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Over jumping electro-funk-rock tracks, the Kings celebrate the possibility of legalization ("Peace Not Greed"), home gardening ("Good as Gold"), the munchies ("Here We Go Again"), and even hazily mislaying a smoke ("The Joint"). Uh, what were we talking about? --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The Kream of the Krop.......2006-11-07

High Society is by far the best Kottonmouth Kings cd ever. I loved Royal Highness, but i just like Richter more than Saint. Most people think Rollin Stoned was the best, but its rhymes aren't really up to par with High Society. Here's a song by song review.

1)Koina Gold Greeting - just an intro N/A
2)Here We Go Again - great start to a great cd. awesome beat, rhymes, and chorus 4/5
3)First Class - Very catchy chorus. awesome beat, and fast rhymes 5/5
4)Daydreamin Fazes - One of my favorite KmK songs ever. lots of energy and awesome rhymes. great catchy beat and chorus. 6/5
5)The Joint - I didn't like this song at first but now it's also one of my favorite KmK songs. pretty good beat, awesome rhymes. 5/5
6)Good As Gold - The beat to this is so white, it's awesome. the chorus is catchy also and the rhymes are great. 5/5
7)Face Facts - Catchy chorus, good beat, one of Loc's best rhymes here. (i'm not the best, just flexed on the next Daddy X planetec, simply, not complex) 5/5
8)Peace Not Greed - Definitely in my top 5 of any KmK song. the beat has tons of energy, and so do the rhymes and the awesome catchy chorus. 6/5
9)The Lottery - Awesome! Chorus isn't too great, beat is incredibly awesome, and Loc raps for over a minute. 5/5
10)Round and Round - Chorus is good, the beat is so white again it's great. i love how Richter and Loc go back and forth. 5/5
11)King's Blend - Not much to say. Awesome beat, awesome chorus, fast, and i mean FAST rhymes. This is the Kings at their absolute best. 6/5
12)Anarchy Through Capitalism - just a filler N/A
13)We the People - One of the only songs on this cd i skip sometimes. cool beat, rhymes are good, just doesn't stand out to me. still good though 4/5
14)Elevated Sound - First song i ever hear by KmK. Awesome beat and sounds, great rhymes and catchy chorus. 5/5
15)UnXplanetory - The other song i skip usually. Beat is ok, raps are still good, but the song overall doens't seem to have much energy. 3/5
16)Wickit Klowns - Great song. Full of energy and the chorus is catchy even if you can't undertand it. I love ICP too so this song was even better. 5/5
17)Coffee Shop Stop - Catchy chorus, great rhymes, nice kickback beat. 5/5
18)Size of an Ant - I love this song. Loc is awesome on this song. Funny chorus. Only thing i don't like is Grand Vanacular. 5/5
19)Crucial - Great song, used to be my favorite. beat is full of energy and so are the rhymes. good to play in your car. love Dogboy too. 5/5
20)B-Dubb's Blend - Just some mixing on the tables. Still a great beat and cool sounds. N/A

Everything about this cd is awesome. I dont' see why anyone wouldn't like it. If you are just getting into KmK, get this, not the mediocre new cds like Koast 2 Koast. Oh, and yes most of the rhymes are about marijuana, so if you don't like that stuff you may not like KmK. You should know that by now though.

5 out of 5 stars amsterdam... a place called home.......2006-06-12

This was the ablum that marked the change in direction for KMK. Even though Johny Richter was the orginal member of the Kottonmouth Kings before Saint Dog (for those who have watched 10 Years Deep) this was the first album that he appeared on as a member. I got into KMK around 2004 but picked up the first 2 records first, then got High Society and this was the album that finally clicked with me. The first 2 records are great on their own terms but I really started to dig the sound they had goin on High Society. Tighter rappin skills, better beats, production was better and the album has alot of energy that gets me pumped up. Once I heard this album I knew I loved the sound and been hooked ever since. This has to be one of my favorite KMK records I love every song. pick it up!

Great tracks:

Here We Go Again
First Class
Day Dreamin' Fazes
Face Facts
Peace Not Greed
The Lottery
King's Blend
We The People
Elevated Sounds
Coffee Shop

5 out of 5 stars High Society = High Energy.......2006-01-03

I find this album to be so full of energy its unbelieveable, KMK are an awesome band even if there topic of smoking weed and drinking gets tiresome,
Kona Gold Greeting: Just a 16 second intro, nothing special.
Here We Go Again: Great opener, great beat with lots of bass, mostly D-loc and Richter on this and they come good. 5/5
First Class: A really cool chilled out beat, D-loc comes best for me on here, the chorus is average. 5/5
Day Dreamin Fazes: My favourite KMK song ever, this song is awesome, needs to be played loud, the beat and lyrics are awesome although its the beat that does it, the chorus is catchy, you will be singing along, if you dont dance around to this you are dead inside. 5/5
The Joint: This song has grown on me alot, i wasnt to keen on this, but now i find the beat very infectious, the verses are decent, the chorus is average. 4/5
Good As Gold: Another awesome song, the beat is very cool, i love the chorus, the verse are cool this whole song just flows well together. 5/5
Face Facts: I enjoy the chorus and the beat, the verses are ok, but i just seem to skip this alot, i just cant get in to it, no means a bad song tho. 3/5
Peace Not Greed: Wicked Song, again beat and lyrics are awesome like most on this album, the chorus is great, the KMk are saying there would peace not greed if the whole world smoked weed. 5/5
The Lottery: A song about what they would do if they won the lottery, i think its an average song. 3/5
Round And Round: We continue with more wicked songs, the beat is wicked and bouncy, D-Loc and Richter are great on here and you will be singing along to the chorus. 5/5
King's Blend: Really cool chilled beat with Richter and D-Loc jus straight ripping it apart, another wicked track, maybe the most sounding Hip-Hop track on the album. 5/5
Anarchy Through Capitolism: This is just a 37 second track with Coporate Avenger reading sumthing out, kinda like a buildup to the next track.
We The People: Another banger of a song, again the beat and verse are wicked. 5/5
Elevated Sounds: Another song that grew on me, this is a decent song for me now that i used to skip, how stupid was i. 5/5
Un Xplanetory: I find the verse very good but i cant stand the chorus and i also dont find the beat very good at all. 3/5
Wickit Klowns: Guest Apperance here by the Insane Clown Posse, either you love them or hate em, i love em so this track is a bonus for me cause this track kicks ass, the beat, verses and chorus are all wicked. 5/5
Coffee Shop: A fairly decent song, but i tend to skip. 3/5
Size Of An Ant: A pretty cool song with some excellent rapping, jus another song stuck with many other great songs on this album. 4/5
Crucial: A wicked song, with the best chorus on the whole album and beat is fairly cool and great verses. 5/5
B-Dubbs Blend: Just an Instrumental of the beat used in Size Of An Ant, pretty cool beat.
Look how many 5/5 i gave on this album, now i know that might not be your opinion but if want to buy a KMK album i suggest you get this first an excellent album with wicked beats, also great for the party with tracks like Round & Round, Day Dreamin Fazes and Peace Not Greed, buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars best kmk album out there.......2005-09-25

this is my favorite kmk album. every song on this album is outstanding. richter and d loc flow very well together. saint was good, but richter is better. the best songs on here are: first class, good as gold, the lottery, kings blend and crucial. if you're just getting into kmk/subnoize, definitely pick this one up first. i also recommend getting big b and kingspade.

5 out of 5 stars Amsterdam, A Place Called Home...........2005-08-07

This has to be my 2nd favorite album by KmK. Every single song on this cd is a chill factor, with groundbreaking songs. Coffee Shop has to be like one of the best songs on this cd no doubt about it right next to King's Blend. But for one thing i kind of miss saint dog, cause man in royal highness he put it all into it Old School, until he left. Then he got replaced by Johnny Richter, And Alot of people say that saint dog is better then Johnny. Well unfortanely not really J-Ric has more ability to spit some lyrical lyrics that will make wanna here more, And more about him. My only thing to say is that i hope KmK makes an album that will put back saint dog, Cause if they do, for sure it will be like a cult classic cd right next to "Royal Highness" , "High Society", And Hidden Stash 2.

4 out of 5 stars Dusting off those heavyweight jazz obsure classics...........2007-03-10

Gilles Peterson digs out obscure gems from well-known jazz masters and Jazzanova get to play with contemporary forces.
If there is any danger of exhaustion from being asked to dig in those crates so often and for so many labels, there is no sign of it here. Gilles has chosen this time to favour the bigger names over the more obscure artists and chosen tracks from Coltrane, Blakey, Evans, Mingus and more.
His side opens with the ephemeral "Christo Redentor" from soul jazz supreme Donald Byrd. Avant-garde gospel meets Ennio Morricone.
We appear to be on more familiar ground with the next track: a mid-sixties Blue Note groover. Except that it isn't, it's Clifford Brown and Max Roach back in 1955, laying down some funky grooves that would turn out to be years ahead of their time.
Gilles has dusted off those Dingwalls jazz sides (or does anyone remember those Saturday afternoon shows on Jazz FM?) and this time filtered off some of the best known names in modern jazz for his contribution to the Kings of... series.
Expect crashing piano solos, crackling percussion and all the accoutrements of a damn fine jazz dance selection. And being jazz dance, there is an obligatory nod to Mark Murphy "My Favourite Things" and a higher than usual incidence of jazz vocal tracks that make the cut.
The thought of Gilles' less jazz-literate fans coming across giants like Coltrane (here represented by the heavyweight choice "Equinox"), Mingus ("Moves") and Bill Evans ("Peace Piece") is an exciting one.

Jazzanova landed the task of choosing from more contemporary sources; a baker's dozen of tracks representing these more broken times. Current big noises like The Matthew Herbert Big Band are there, as are long-time big names on the scene: Two Banks of Four and 4 Hero.
Jazzanova had the luxury of being able to call on many of the artists and elicit exclusive remixes and interpretations of tracks. They have chosen wisely and widely. Their choices cross continents (all populated ones at least) and genres effortlessly demonstrating once again that jazz is not dead, it has just moved house.
Although I am not averse to a spot of nostalgia (like hearing UFO's "Loud Minority" again, it is the fresh Afro-tinged jazz tracks that grabbed me most including possibly the definitive vocal version of "Afro Blue" by Jeffrey Smith - an epic track boldly re-interpreted.

4 out of 5 stars From classic true jazz to jazz-infuenced futurisms..........2006-04-26

Here's what my reviewer Kris had to say for DJfix.com/Raves.com:
From classic true jazz to jazz-infuenced futurisms, this two disc set brings us "The History" and "The Present" of jazz. Helping to filter out some worthy tracks from jazz's extensive history is Gilles Peterson, whose selections on "The History" disc include Rashaan Roland Kirk's "Spirits Up Above," a kind of funky sung jazz band number that halfway makes me think of the "Hair" musical; lonely, rainy night brass jazz with delicious vocals both male and female on Charles Mingus' "Moves"; the jazz classicism of Mark Murphy's "My Favorite Things," putting to shame Julie Andrew's version; the hip smoothness of John coltrane on "Equinox." Others on disc one include Roy Haynes, Randy Weston, Art Blakely, The Jazz Crusaders, Eric Dolphy and Bill Evans. The second disc explores more modernistic modes, touching on music that may not seem like jazz - in some cases - but is definitely endowed with roots in jazz. Examine the sexy soul jazz-it-up of Nikki O's "Butterflies" or the funktified kickalong of "Mother of the Future" by Bembe Segue. You can immerse yourself in the dark, almost foreboding sound of Two Banks of Four performing "Two Miles Before Dawn." You can even enter electronic chillout territory with "At Les" by the Innerzone Orchestra. Others on this disc are 4 Hero, The Matthew Herbert Big Band feat. Jamie Lidell, Pavel Kostiuk feat. Vanessa Freeman, Rima feat. Ian O'Brien, Carlo Fashion and Hedvig Hanson. These "Present" selections were made by the Jazzanova collective. All told this is a wonderful exploration of jazz and jazz offshoots, boasting an eclectic (for sure) batch of tracks, a selection of smart, alluring music to drift through for a while.

3 out of 5 stars just what the world needs: another dj breaks mix........2006-09-09

great collection on the kon and amir disc, but the muro disc is just another collection of 30 seconds to a full minute of breaks only. pretty tired. how about the whole track, muro. get the kings of funk collection instead, unless you're into a monotonous breaks mix.

5 out of 5 stars Holy *%@!^#*&*..........2006-07-13

Once in a very long while my faith in the dubious DJ mix CD format is restored. Brainfreeze by DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist. Uneasy Listening by Z-Trip & DJ P. Your Face Or Your Kneecaps by RJD2. Funky Sole by DJ Miles.

DJ Muro's amazing contribution to The Kings of Diggin' double-CD set also belongs on this list.

For those, like myself, in the over-35 demographic who might assume that "dig" means "like," allow me to quote from DJ Goods...

"To me, crate diggin' means spending a lot of your free time hitting up your parents' old record collection or stopping by that shady used record store somewhere in Greenwich Village in NYC or in some little ghost town in Massachusetts or Connecticut or somethin'. Once you get to the spot where you will begin your crate diggin', the main objective is to find that record with that tight bass line, that funkdafied guitar loop or that 70s porno type drum pattern that relies heavily on the high hats. After you find what you're lookin' for, the next step is to put the needle to these records and try to find that perfect break."

And with Tokyo's DJ Muro at the helm, the brain-melting breaks just... keep... coming. Funk. Disco. Soul. Latin. Fusion. Even a bizarre yet rockin' vocal rendition of "Also Sprach Zarathustra." Thirty eight (38!) rapid-fire, expertly mixed, ridiculously obscure tracks of blazing, ass-shaking greatness. All hail DJ Muro -- you are indeed the King of Diggin'!

As for the other CD in this collection compiled by Kon & Amir, it's nice... but not an epic masterpiece. There's a mellower, soul-jazz vibe throughout their seventeen minimally mixed and tastefully sequenced rare groove selections.

But you must -- MUST -- get The Kings of Diggin' for the jaw-droppingly awesome DJ Muro mix.

5 out of 5 stars Yo, smoke a joint and take a ride KMK style!.......2006-02-19

Joint Ventures is another very good release from the Kottonmouth Kings. The new KMK songs are impressive for the most part, especially In God We Trust and Radio Head. The new Kingspade, Daddy X, and One Session songs on there are great previews for what promises to be more great Sub Noize classics, especially One Session, which i personally think has the most potential out of the upcoming releases. As for the remixes, they`re pretty much hit or miss IMO. Best ones are FTH2(Let `Em Know remix) and Live Today(Revival Mix first heard on the Japanese version of Fire It Up). Joint Ventures, while not as good as KMK classics such as High Society and Rollin` Stoned, is a very good release, especially if you want to hear some fresh KMK and new Kingspade(New album out in summer of `06, Daddy X, and One Session(both dropping in January `06). So if you`re down for tha krown, then you`ll likely love it, but if you`re new to the scene, then you would have to listen to it a few times to get into it.

1 out of 5 stars wow.......2005-12-08

This album makes me cringe when I hear it. I just tried writing a review for this album and I had to stop because it's so bad, and that's coming from a huge Kottonmouth Kings fan. The only tolerable tracks are 'I'm Hungry', 'F.T.I.2 Remix', and 'Bad Habits Remix' which was already released almost 2 years ago on the import version of Fire It Up. I guess that would make it fit on this album since it is a rarity, but I've had the track for quite some time so it still dissapointed me.

The other remixes are horrible, and the solo tracks are in my opinion the worst on the entire cd. I enjoyed the Kingspade album, but these 2 tracks are just weak. One Session sounds like they have potential, but they don't seem too skilled as emcees and the beat is wack. As far as the new group tracks (first few songs), it seems like they took a step away from the club thing, but with little good results unfortunatly. I was happy to see Dog Boy's return, but I wasn't feeling the 2 songs he appeared on either.

It seems as though KMK is fading into mediocrity. They came correct with "No.7" after releasing the Kottonmouth Xperience (equally as horrible in a different way), but can they really do it again after this? Only time will tell. 10 years of partying as hard as they have been, it doesnt suprise me that they are starting to lose thier edge.

In closing, I love you KMK, but I'm not about to go pretend that I like this garbage. Unfortunatly, half thier fans are 'mall juggalos' (sorry guys but your lame) and will do exactly what I said I wont. I can only hope this record does horrible in sales and the kings will get a wake up call, and start putting out better music again. Scrapped material or no, this sh-t doesnt deserve to see the light of day.

peace

5 out of 5 stars KMK does it again!!!!.......2005-12-06

WOW! These guys have grown so much. I remember royal highness...which was good, but the production on their albums has just gone through the roof! All of these songs are good! I am always hesitant about buying albums that have alot of remixes on them but the new songs and the remixes are just as good as the original if not better! "Rip the night Away" has always been a great song but the remix is sick! Man do they know music! Anyways...pick this up...they just keep getting better and better!!!!

Album Description

Third album for Columbia & overall from poppy '90s Canadian alternative rock act. Slickly produced, many of the 14 cuts conjure up World Party doing a collaboration album with a mellowed out Red Hot Chili Peppers in the '70s while vocalist Gerald Eaton was imitating the singing mannerisms (but the voice) of U2's Bono. Some of the tunes have a slightly sassy horn section in the background more like Chicago (the band) in the '70s than Stevie Wonder's at that time. 1997 release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great musicians of funk.......2005-11-25

when this CD came out and the videos were on heavy airplay on muchmusic, I dismissed this band as being too tacky and was into my r&b/hip hop. 8 years later when that genre has reached an all time low, I decided to listen to the hit singles from this album for old time sakes and I now realize that they are talented musicians who play live instruments, write great songs and in a prince-like fashion have the funk! Definitely check out this band if you, they are so much better than boybands and groups like maroon 5

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Follow-Up.......2004-07-19

The first Philosopher Kings album was great. I was looking forward to this one, but was sorely disappointed to find that they lost their edge. Gone were the jazzy influences, and the funk, too. We were left with unimaginiative pop. Oleo is the exception, and an excellent song on an otherwise boring album. If you're looking for an album by the Philosopher Kings, get their self-titled one instead. That one's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Unique!!.......2001-11-06

I remember watching Muchmusic one day and stumbled upon PK's video, "You don't love me (like you used to)" and froze to the sounds of the lead singer's vocals and the bands musical arrangements. If your looking for something different and far, far away from bubble-gummy pop culture this album is a must have. Imports are the best! I also recommend Jamiroquai (if you like a more disco-ish feel), Stephen Simmonds (if you lean towards jazzy R&B), and Modjo (just a good group).

5 out of 5 stars A great Canadian group.......2000-12-14

How can anyone not love The Philosopher Kings? Their wonderful blend of rock/alternative/pop/soul/r&b and jazz is awe-inspiring. This album contains the hits 'It hurts to love you', 'I am the man', 'You stepped on my life', 'You don't love me (like you used to)' and the wonderful cover of Godley and Creme's 'Cry', which I think is even better than the original. Listen also to the jazzy sax ending to 'I am the man'. Perfect! In fact, as you listen to the whole album, listen to the background music not just the vocals. The arrangemants are truly brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Go see them.......1999-12-28

I own all three PK CD's, "Philosopher Kings", "Famous, rich and Beautiful" and "One Night Stand", which is now currently only available in Canada, and I love them all. They are one of the best bands around these days. I have also seen them three times live, and each time they get better. If you have a chance to see them, do so.
