Taking inspiration from little known British band Curve, the formula behind Garbage was simple enough: Industrial strength beats, grungy guitars and ice queen vocals. But in Scottish fireball Shirley Manson the three middle-aged studio whizzes from Wisconsin not only found a muse but a front woman whose infinite charisma and wicked sense of humor--as evidenced by the title of this greatest hits set--gave even No Doubt a solid run in the hits race. For a few years, the group ruled the charts with shiny metallic pop gems like "Queer," "Stupid Girl," and "Only Happy When It Rains," hampered only by some remedial lyrics and a penchant for cribbing other bands' melodies (see: The Pretenders aping "Special"). There's a discernible dip in quality midway through this collection, when at the turn of the millennium Garbage seemingly lost its fire, but at least the group's token James Bond theme, "The World Is Not Enough," is more Shirley Bassey than Sheena Easton. Fans who are already up do date with the originals will want to pick up the special edition set that features a bonus disc of remixes by some of the biggest players on the '90s electronic music scene, including Massive Attack, The Crystal Method, and Unkle. --Aidin Vaziri

Product Description

Four albums and seven Grammy® nominations later, Garbage has its first best of collection--Absolute Garbage. Along with the new track Tell Me Where It Hurts, Absolute Garbage features 17 songs of extreme and intense emotion, from Stupid Girl, Queer and #1 Crush to Special, Bleed Like Me and Why Do You Love Me.

With the band recently emerging from a hiatus for a live performance and the recording of Tell Me Where It Hurts, Absolute Garbage offers the best of a band that, to quote a lyric from Queer, has been the strangest of the strange, the coolest of the cool.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good mix of garbage.......2007-07-29

the remastered sound and collection of essential songs from the first 2 garbage albums alone make this worthwhile. however, it is skimpy on 'beautifulgarbage' material ("androgyny" anyone?), and drops at least one if not 2 worthy inclusions from 'bleed like me.' the version of "#1 crush" is from 'romeo + juliet,' which is the nellee hooper remix. the original (from 'subhuman ["vow"]') is still a stray b-side. apart from the aforementioned omissions, this is the most up to date mastering of the songs that are included. great mix for those that are unfamiliar with the band, and almost "absolute" for those that aren't.

4 out of 5 stars One Band's Garbage is another band's Treasure.......2007-07-25

...or Shirley Manson rules, and we missed it. When "Garbage" first debuted in 1995, this crew of rock pros fronted by the fiery Manson hit like a ton of bricks. Melding the snarl of The Pretenders with icy new wave, "Vow" laid it all on the table. "I can't use what I can't abuse," Shirley sang over chunky guitars and industrial beats. Superproducer Bruce Vig and the other two members has spent enough time in the alt-rock backstreets that they new how to make that sound mean something. With the outsider anthem "Queer" and sneering put-down "Stupid Girl," Garbage had the ingredients all in place.

The following "Version 2.0" was almost as good. But the fact that Garbage was so blatant about their homage sometimes dulled the coolness of songs like "Push It" (swiped directly from Salt'n'Pepa) and "Special," which has Manson singing the hook from "Brass In Pocket" over the fade. The singles were great, but the seams were showing.

Perhaps it was that sameness that inspired the band to stretch out on "Beautiful Garbage's" moody and atmospheric material. "Androgyny" (not included here) flirted with R'n'B, but "Cherry Lips/Go Baby Go" was exactly the kind of amalgam of styles that made the best Garbage great. On the other hand, the lack of immediacy made it a commercial drop-off from the first two albums. The band went on hiatus.

When 2005 rolled around, "Bleed Like Me" sounded like a return to form, even if that sound was no longer all too relevant. Still, the slamming "Why Do You Love Me" found Manson deliciously waffling back and forth between anger at the cheating boyfriend and the angst of the chorus "Why don't you love me? It's making me crazy!" Putting a pretty pout to the title track, Shirley Manson taunts us with "you should see my scars." Indeed, we get a band that sounded both battle weary and resilient.

This best of caps with a new song, "Tell Me Where it Hurts," which sounds hot. There is also a remix of "Bleed Like Me's" "It's All Over But The Crying," plus the soundtrack singles "#1 Crush" (Romeo & Juliet) and the James Bond "The World Is Not Enough." The disc does flesh out its running time, so I really can't gripe about songs I'd rather hear. But I will: "Bad Boyfriend" "Androgyny" and "Silence Is Golden." Other side, if you never picked up any Garbage albums, "Absolute Garbage" will fill in the hits for you.

4 out of 5 stars Almost nails it.......2007-07-24

Encompassing elements of electronica and hard-rock over dance-beats, with lush melodies and killer hooks, Garbage has proved to be one of the best bands to come down the pike in the last ten years. Garbage's new compilation "Absolute Garbage" (2007) includes some of the bands best work, along with a terrific new song "Tell Me Where it Hurts."

Nearly eighty minutes (the length allowed for a CD) "Absolute Garbage" is very generous, offering some of the band's best work. But even with eighteen tracks, this best-of misses the mark a bit.

The track list is fairly predictable. As the band's first two albums far out-sold the next two, this compilation is skewed in the direction of "Garbage" (1995) and "Version 2.0" (1998) and a little skimpy on selections from the underrated and appreciated "beautifulgarbage" (2001) and "Bleed Like Me" (2005). Therefore, some of the band's later-day singles like "Breaking up the Girl," "Androgyny" and "Sex is not the Enemy" are left by the way-side.

If you are a casual Garbage fan, this compilation is ideal, as it includes all the well-known hits from the band's commercial peak, so as a "greatest hits" the CD works. However, in terms of covering the band's entire career, this compilation leaves a little something to be desired. While "beautifulgarbage" and "Bleed Like Me" didn't have the sales of the first two, they were easily as good, and more of their singles should have been included here. Perhaps a two-CD anthology, with all the hits as well as essential album cuts would have been preferable.

Still, if you aren't really a Garbage fanatic and just want the hits, this CD should be what you're looking for. That said; if you like what you hear and have the money, all four Garbage albums are definitely worth owning. While Garbage might be a `singles band," each of their four studio albums stands-up on its own right, each with its own flavor, and the non-singles on those albums are excellent.

The new song, the melancholy "Tell Me Where it Hurts" sounds "grand," and wouldn't have sounded at all out of place on the Phil Specter-esque, "beautifulgarbage." It's disappointing, however, that the other new Garbage song "Betcha" is not included on this CD and you have to buy the "Tell Me Where it Hurts" single to get it. Hopefully someday Garbage will release a compilation album of all their b-sides and it will be available there.

Two other hits, "#1 Crush" from the "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack (1996) and "The World is not enough" from the James Bond film of the same name (1999) are thrown in for good measure.

The Absolute Sound has been a premiere audiophile rag for decades. If you are one, you already know them. If not, then there is only a small chance their magazine will be useful to you. They have another publication for home theatre, "Perfect Vision" which has far broader appeal these days. SACD is the format for this disk. Many of them are pressed in "hybrid" for use on conventional CD players. SACD is a significant improvement on the CD, which initially promised "perfect sound forever".

Telarc is a particularly high quality label that supports SACD. They have a fine list of recordings that extends far beyond these chestnuts.

To appreciate this improvement you need to have a SACD player. So the best use of this disk is to bring it with you to different audio stores to audition their equipment. Over time it functions as a reference disk, or benchmark, as you compare different sound systems.

Because it has only bleeding hunks of well known classical music, it has little other value unless you are interested in classical music but have little experience of it. In that case it may serve as a sampler to lead you to buy complete recordings of these selections. But again you need the SACD player, which you may already have if you are a jazz or rock audiophile. Otherwise, pass it by.

    Album Description

Like every musical genre these days, House is undergoing transformation. Internationally acclaimed producer and DJ, Julius Papp, leads this metamorphosis with his newest release, Loveslapped by Julius Papp. Julius presents three tracks, along side other Loveslap artists who believe House should be a musical journey containing all the emotions, feelings and elements of real life. Moving away from the common "colder" synth-based sounds long associated with the genre towards the integration of more live instruments and organic sounds, Julius purposefully tells a story with his song composition and selection.

Building on his early musical influences from the 1970's when disco, soul and rock all coexisted on the same radio stations, Julius expanded his musical interests over the years to include everything from dance to old school funk to hip hop and jazz. With this eclectic culmination in mind, he developed a smoother edge, a deeply soulful soothing style of House that is captured in this new release.

Over the past decade, Julius has played radio, maintained packed residencies, and toured throughout the world. For this exciting new mixed CD, Julius drew exclusively from the Loveslap catalog and family of artists to create his realization of how it feels to be Loveslapped by Julius Papp.

5 out of 5 stars Julius Papp continues to inspire!.......2006-12-21

I've known few exceptional creative talents in my lifetime and even fewer geniuses.
Julius Papp is the only person on both lists.
His vision is always out ahead and around the corner, never redundant or static.
If you talk to him ask him to call me before I sell the story surrounding his first ever commercial offering to the National Enquirer.
Just the story because I still enjoy the tape to this day.
I know the way to San Jose!

5 out of 5 stars the V.I.P. of House CDs.......2003-04-16

Loveslapped! by Julius Papp is all that I've ever wanted in a house mix: consistent, soulful, inspired and sexy. It's the essence of a pretty-people pool party in L.A. and a glowing sunset in Ibiza. All of the right elements of style and passion have been craftily mixed together by Julius Papp. This is the V.I.P room of house mix CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Master of love and groove.......2002-10-03

Julius, you've come a long way baby.
Still the master from back in the day.
Do you know the way to San Jose?
Daddy's all grown up now and aren't we proud?

You must get "Loveslapped" by Julius Papp.
Nothing else compares to this experience!

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 for deep house done right.......2002-08-20

Way, way underground and for some time Julius Papp's been putting his fingers on some of the finest deep house music around. Last year's darling Esho Funi v1 would have made even the scantily clad Naked Music gals flush with envy, as the handful of alert buyers who snatched up that barely-marketed jewel well know.

Here, Papp again attaches himself to another American micro-label, Loveslap! Recordings, a family of a few highly talented individuals. He leads with his elegant guitar ballad "A Flower Blossoms," quickly trumped by the exquisitely backed vocals from Carrie on sweet love story "Adore" from Santillan, Gray and Brann. Vocal pieces and instrumentals are held in balance, with novel surprises (the French soul of "Belle et Bete") and occasional foray into jam band territory (the organic approach to "Rial".) Final nods go for the guitar-led groover "All I Do."

Except for some unwelcome keyboard interludes on "Azziza" and "Grace," Loveslapped is deep house done right, flowing together in a warm haze but with enough chops for the dance floor.

    5 out of 5 stars Reference Material.......2002-08-19

This is an excellent CD for the quality of production alone. Use this CD when testing new equipment or when you just need to put something on that will have you humming, smiling and probably cutting up the rug. The careful listener will hear a thing or two that they have not heard before. It's a mix cd so the tracks encompass a broad range of moods and tastes from soulful accoustic to mental electronic. The remix of "Adore" is a superb track which beautifully combines the best aspects of both worlds. Too often a CD like this one relies to heavily on a few big tracks but this disc is produced beautifully and the mood that is set never falters and great music is skillfully delivered until the end. It's not often that you hear a break or a revved up chorus and you lose your train of thought while conversing with friends but parts of this CD do that to me everytime.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like Hell (literally).......2002-01-31

I like dark music, but "The Absolute Supper" is as black as its packaging. The liner notes confirm that some of these songs are satanic; they pretty much all sound like it. These artists probably sneer at "goth" and return to whatever blood ritual they're performing. (I know some of it's just an image - but some of it isn't.) This CMI sampler showcases the "cold"ness that Nordic artists can bring to their songs. The best we've done in the U.S. is Swans.

The style moves from death-ambient to neo-martial to medieval folk. Sanctum's "[-]" is a relief from the heaviness, with a Switchblade Symphony style. Other tracks set you adrift in a cavern of shapeless noises, and you have to find your own way out. Hazard's "Who Blew Out The Northern Lights?" sounds like the song you might hear the minute after shooting yourself in the head.

One thing the ambient, hypnotic tracks have in common: you think you're getting bored, then you realize six minutes went by and you've hardly moved.

Disc 2 kicks off with an ambient noise assault (Brighter Death Now's "I Wish I Was A Litlle Girl"). Skip this and save yourself 9:37. The next track has a LITTLE more shape to it. MZ412's ritual piece "N.B.S. act I -Begravning" is a reminder that some of these bands have declared their...allegiance. The next several songs are in much the same vein. ...

The last song actually betrays a sense of humor (cheesy organ, old movie sample, goofy lyrics) more suited to a Rob Zombie release than this sampler.

"The Absolute Supper" is a great buy if you're into the styles mentioned above. If you're new to it, wait until about noon to play it the first time. If you play it in your car while driving at night, you'll feel a cold hand on your shoulder, moving towards your neck. Drive safely.

4 out of 5 stars A good sample CD of one of the greatest labels around.......1999-06-24

The first CD of this sampler is quite good. The project that stands out the most in my mind is Sephiroth. And Raison d'etre is amazing as usual. The second CD however is not as good. There are at least two songs on it that are absolutely atrocious. Nevertheless, this sampler should still be purchased because of its relatively low price, the wonderful packaging, and, as mentioned before, the first CD.

5 out of 5 stars A collection of Music from Europe's finest dark music label.......1998-07-16

I have been a fan of Cold Meat Industry recordings for quite some time now, simply due to the fact that I know of no other label which brings out such a spectrum of sincerely dark music. The music ranges from agonizingly beautiful neo-classical arrangements ('Arcana', for instance) to agonizingly cruel and brutal death industrial ('Brighter Death Now'). In between we find dark/ black ambient acts such as 'Raison d'etre', even a combination of apocalyptic folk and ambient industrial, namely the deeply occult 'Ordo Equilibrio'. From inserting one of the cd's into your cd player till its end, you will find yourself confronted with a different reality. This double cd sampler gives a nearly complete overview of the bands featured on CMI, and comes exquisitely packaged in a gatefold digipack, including two full colour booklets, one describing the bands and the other describing the history of CMI. This is a sampler for people who wear black not just because it is a fad, but be! ! cause of true, deep intent. It is a must buy and deserves a place in each cd-shelf.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The truth of this CD. What the other reviews don't say........2002-02-04

This is a popular series of CD's in th UK. Many artists have done absolute interview. S Club 7's is a half hour interview with the 7. There is no music by S Club any where on it. Unless you are a hard core S Clubber, You might not like this.

    3 out of 5 stars Absolute Interloo.......2001-06-18

Not up to the standard of other tracks more one to buy on the album not the single. Jo sounds good though. NOt too much of a one you'll remeber in 10 years at all though!!
