Album Description
Featuring 11 of Motown's biggest and most popular hits remixed by the most creative forces in music, MOTOWN REMIXED VOLUME 2, is the latest demonstration of the timeless, genre-smashing nature of Motown's greatest artists and songs. MOTOWN REMIXED VOLUME 2 spans styles from the Reggaeton funk of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" to the all-night Latin House of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." Diana Ross gets reinvented in a hot remix of "The Boss" and Smokey Robinson's "Being With You" now features his rarely heard Spanish vocals.Customer Reviews:
More great Motown .......2007-06-24
If you are a Motown purist like I am, I don't think you will regret buying this latest remix.

Finally-Remixes That Really Make Sense.......2007-05-23
Motown Remixed Vol. 2: 'Latin' Mixes.......2007-05-23
Highlights:
'Shotgun' really benefits from the Latin treatment, which smoothly integrates the sax and organ of the original with a Latin steel drum beat. The addition of the Latin flavor to the Motown sound also works well for 'Dancing Machine'. The new mix really swings with an added brass arrangement. The best parts of the song (Michael's first verses, the instrumental breakdown) are drawn out and repeated (the instrumental breakdown has a really Latin flavor, who knew?) and the instrumental build-up behind Jermaine's lines is an excellent touch. The Andres Levin mix of 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' is the crowning glory of the album. Marvin's vocals are front and center, as they should be, and they are perfectly complemented by the mix, which features a piano track. It's absolute alchemy! It reminds me of the genius of a Freemasons remix. Another solid track is the mix of the Spanish-language version of 'Being With You'. The trademark saxophone of the original is omitted, but Smokey's always-brilliant vocals are placed over layers of bongos and strings, creating a slightly more (just slightly, though) uptempo sound than the original.
Lowlights:
The 'The Boss' mix is dreadful...the mix strips the original instrumentation and is very salsa/tango music with a hint of reggae, which is fine, but paired with Diana's vocals all the drama of the song is zapped. And if you've heard 'The Boss,' it is ALL ABOUT the drama. All that is lost in this mix, unfortunately. There's something about the key of the original vocals and the key of new mix that doesn't match well at all. Not to mention that her vocals are too muddled. A bit of a disaster. Both the David Elizondo mixes (of 'Heat Wave' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone') have a reggae sound as well, and I'm not a huge fan of reggae so naturally I'm a bit predisposed against them. It works much better for 'Heat Wave,' but neither track is one I plan on listening to again.
In the middle:
The SPK mix of 'I Want You Back' is very subtle, to the point where I might have to take a minute before realizing it's a mix. If I want to hear the original, I've already got it. The mix of 'I Can't Get Next To You' is subtle but slightly less so...it attempts to add drama with an extra drumbeat and a rock guitar sound, and the breakdown is mixed. But the original already had drama with the frantic passing around of the vocals, and the original beat complemented it perfectly. This mix seems to be a bit overkill. The 'Square Biz' mix is very calypso flavored and fun, but Teena Marie's vocals are slightly overpowered by the instrumental track. And the original 'Don't Look Any Further' has a bit of a Latin/reggae feel, which ironically is stripped a bit for the new mix. A folky-Latin guitar arrangement is added, and it has a bit more of a downtempo sound. I prefer the original but this version is quality (it would have been much more fitting on the first Motown Remixed album).
So, 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4) for a solid remix album. Regarding the series in general, I do wish that instead of themes, the Motown Remixed series would focus on compiling the best Motown remixes out there, regardless of style. And I wish the series would come out more often than once every two years! Remixes of Motown tracks are constantly hitting the clubs, so there's no shortage of material.

The sequel to 2002's Verve Remixed follows and improves upon the original's formula; take material from the storied vaults at Verve Records and let top DJs of the modern era have at them. Featuring an impressive roster of dance artists like Miguel Migs, Koop, and Fila Brazillia, the trick is matching DJ with jazz standard in a way that compliments both. It's a tough chore, given the classics involved and the need to do them justice. On Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants," Gotan Project manage the task with distinction, filtering rustic and romantic accordions through the song's lusty machinations. Astute choices are required, like Mondo Grosso's decision to build a solid thump out of just the central melody of Archie Shepp's "Blues For Brother George Jackson." Sometimes, the best thing to do is get out of the way; Mr. Scruff's Soul Party Mix of "Do What You Wanna" only adds some background party noise to Ramsey Lewis' ripping keyboard solo. VR2 doesn't hit the mark every time, but the combinations that work accomplish what only the best dance music does--they crumble the walls between genres and encourage us all to get down together. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:
Five stars for one song.......2007-07-04
Volume 2.......2007-04-10
VERVE/REMIXED 2 consists of 14 newly remixed songs. Disc packaged in clear jewel case; total running time: 72:08. Booklet does not include information about the original recordings (not even songwriting credits).
There are once again two remixes of Nina Simone recordings. There are also two Ella Fitzgerald recordings remixed. Several instrumental tracks are remixed - I don't get the point of that, but they are included here.
This sequel is not nearly as good as the original.

In the age of the digital cut and paste and sonic download, these assorted mixers prove that good taste in source material will get you a cooler result no matter how many rhythm tracks, horn blasts, repeated phrases and other techno smoke and mirrors you can throw at a song. Producers Jeff Daniel, Doug Bernheim, and David Hargis expertly picked some prime time pieces from the likes of jazz singer Joe Williams, the mighty organ master Jimmy McGriff, bebop king Charlie Parker and pop jazz crooners, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney, to name a just few. There are even some symphony and philharmonic orchestras whose big recordings are overlaid with alluring new flourishes that sound like they might have always been there in "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and "Good King Wenceslas." You will probably never hear anything like Clooney's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," being channeled through a distant galaxy with a wreath of rhythmic and melodic aural affects, or Mahalia Jackson's saintly gospel voice turned into an etheric presence on "Silent Night." But it's guaranteed that you will be repeating again and again every alchemical track when the CD is over. Hot. --Martin KellerAlbum Description
In 2003, Six Degrees Records released the first volume in the Christmas Remixed holiday series. The concept of taking Christmas classics as performed by such luminaries as, Bing Crosby, Mel Torme, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong and handing them over to a cast of the world's best modern dance, hip-hop and electronic producers yielded one of the most entertaining holiday records in recent memory. In fact, the All Music Guide went so far as to comment, "There will probably not be a better new Christmas album this year than this one, and there may not be a better one for many years." The Los Angeles Times added, "Any group of tracks that yields as many smiles as this deserves a spot in the holiday CD rotation".Christmas Remixed 2 follows in the wake of its predecessor's success with the same winning formula guaranteed to please fans of the first volume while winning over new converts. Once again such holiday favorites as, "Jingle Bells", "The Christmas Song", "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" and "Silent Night" are performed by a dream team of interpreters like Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney and Charlie Parker. These tracks are then remixed and re-grooved into fun and accessible modern versions sure to please even the most hardened of holiday scrooges. Christmas Remixed 2's great cast of remixers includes Kaskade, John Beltran, King Kooba, Future Loop Foundation and the Bombay Dub Orchestra.
Thanks to Christmas Remixed 2, the holidays will be fun and funky once again!

Innovative & fun.......2007-01-08
WOW!.......2005-12-20
battle of the Christmas remixers..........2005-12-04
Turns out the real party is happenin' on Christmas Remixed 2 where our holiday mixmasters seem to know how to make something new and fresh out of a familiar tune. This new collection lives up to (and perhaps even improves upon) the original Christmas Remixed from Six Degrees released in 2003. Each track has a distinct personality, and there's a good mix of vocal and instrumental selections (unlike the all-vocal Merry Mixmas). Highlights include:
*Bombay Dub Orchestra's jazz/funk wah-wah guitar drenched "Jingle Bells" perfectly blended with Joe Williams' vocal
*tasty twists on Jimmy McGriff and Charlie Parker by TONAL and King Kooba
*the head-bobbin' beat of "Frosty the Snowman" remixed by the Rondo Brothers (with Patti Page's hilariously looped "thumpity-thump-thump" refrain)
*Charles Brown's "I'll Be Home for Christmas" mutated into a strange retro-synth hip hop ballad by Ohmega Watts
*the sinister funky drumming superimposed upon "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" by Red Baron
*46bliss' ethereal, spooky "Silent Night" with the echoing vocals of Mahalia Jackson and backing choir (this one would have been even better without the backbeat, though...)
Sure, there are a few tracks that coast and go on a little too long, but overall this is a perfect example of what a good remix album should be: originals reimagined in interesting, creative ways with plenty of stylistic variety and thoughtful track sequencing. Hey, I bet grandma would even get a kick out of this stuff (especially after a couple Tom and Jerrys...) [Note to Santa: How about a Christmas Remixed 3 in my stocking next year?]
Decision: Christmas Remixed 2 (break)beats Merry Mixmas, y'all... word (and so forth...) [see my Amazon review of Merry Mixmas for more details...]

Ultimate lame remixed 2.......2006-09-19
Not much in the way of big dance hits...and not enough long versions!.......2006-09-13
Track times and individual comments:
CD1
1. trippin on sunshine (original)...pizzaman (6:50) (latin house feel with a kind of light techno riff--you'd swear it was 1992 all over again)
2. never ever (housetrap mix)...tom tom le chevalier (3:45) (light disco house--female vocal)
3. Just like that (Jason nevins radio edit)...amber (3:39) (HOW can you put an edit with a dance combo like Amber and Jason Nevins??? Pick up her CD single for the full length mix)
4. Feel 4 me...2 small (2:58) (catchy male vocal--light electro/disco house)
5. it's my life (love to infinity mix)...freeze factory (3:58) (blech. Did we really need another cover of the Talk Talk classic? This is a mousy female vocal with a disco house feel)
6. Controversy (housetrap mix)...future tiny wave (3:23) (HOT dark funky house mix of Prince classic, with female vocals. Want the LONG version!)
7. Gotta let you go...limelight (5:22) (funky electro bassline hook and repetitive female vocals--this shorter version was a better choice this time--just long enough)
8. spellbound (22 green club mix)...sherrie lea (10:47) (FINALLY, a super long full length mix. A nice peak anthem by Sherrie Lea)
9. Funkytown...dave lambert vs. elektrokid (3:39) (wow this is lame. A barely remixed version of the original Lipps Inc version--minus any of the vocal. Truly hokey novelty.)
10. Ignite my fantasy (south beach mix)...platinum girls (4:17) (bland, light house with super commercial female vocals and catchy chorus)
11. give me rhythm (full intention mix)...black connection (3:33) (gospel house vocals, disco influenced. Catchy and upbeat, but not very interesting)
12. here I go (dside club mix)...dside (6:28) (A catchy melody, a sort of alternative female vocal, and an electro feel with a guitar riff and some robotic vocal backgrounds. One of the best tracks on CD1, along with "controversy")
CD2
1. shining star (sunset strippers mix)...pate no. 1 (3:43) (great female vocal, with a great electro synth riff)
2. Playboy bunny (uniting nations mix)...olinda (3:03) (eek! Barbie Girl anyone?)
3. always (Robbie rivera juicy summer mix)...pate no. 1 (7:33) (funky disco house with minimal vocal. Typical Rivera mix. Either you like it or you don't)
4. Upside down...new generation (2:59) (Painful cheesy disco house cover of Diana Ross classic)
5. Russian girls (denis naidanov mix)...sasha dith (3:12) (very euro electro. Personally, I found the female and male vocals annoying)
6. Secret garden (brother brown mix)...ortz (3:45) (floaty female vocal and pulsing bassline, but a clunky rhythm track, not house)
7. I've got this feeling...con amore (7:00) (moody female vocal with a dark funky bassline)
8. Come dance...freeloader (3:05) (airy soft female vocal trance)
9. Summerdaze...sugartape (8:22) (electro house with a heavy bassline, guitar riff, and loads of robotic voices. Eight minutes is a bit too much of this track)
10. Detroit...pascal defoe (5:31) (airy instrumental house track. Yawn.)
11. It's just funky (beatchuggers mix)...rose (7:42) (blech. Sounds like a really bad early 1970s soul song remixed into disco house. Obnoxious)
12. pacific 202...perfect 10 (5:54) (great thumpin electro house--but it's an instrumental with a saxophone or something carrying the melody. WHAT a clash of interests!)

Album Description
This compilation marks over 30 years since the birth of disco. What most critics described as "flash in the pan" has not only survived, it's still thriving, and what started out as a fad has become a legitimate dance movement that is not about to go away anytime soon. The momentum of the disco movement, and why it has survived all these years, is evident in the strength of the tracks presented here. No matter what the style, the strength of the music is in the quality of the songs. And the songs make you feel good, plain and simple. These funky cornerstones of the disco era have survived because of their undeniable appeal as just great dance music. The adventurous remixes on this disc further illustrate the reason for disco's longevity and how it sounds so fresh, even in 2006. And the songs still make you feel good.

Customer Reviews:
Solid.......2006-03-03
It's not bad, but it's far from being great. This series is a cross-faded mix, starting with Cyz's "Que Zomba". I liked the opening track and even Electro Coco's "Arte de Chiacao" until they went a bit crazy with the cuica sample. For those that remember Racoon's "Sensacao" from 2001, think along the lines of that. Other songs that stood out were RioListic's "Uma Saudade" which I honestly think would have had a great mood in another lineup, evne if the lyric gets a bit too much. I also liked Geni Pereira's track... it actually had some good soulful touches in it. Carla hassett's "Tao Legal" was okay but is screaming to be enhanced in a remix. Meanwhile Martin East Project's "Neverending", remixed by John Beltran is given his festive Miami feel although it too gets repetitive.
Again, this wasn't a bad release. I do give it credit for being seemingly more Brasil influenced than Brazilution 5.3 from a few months before it. But some of the songs on here were pretty weak/life-less and you're hard pressed not to press the FF button often to get to the next engaging cut. That's one of the dangers from a label sampler that's pushing specific artists - sometimes they'll be quality like Schema & Ziriguiboom/Crammed (Six Degrees) or they'll be a little off the mark like Bossa & Go. But if you do like this, be sure to check out the original along with the Cafe Samba series which is a spitting image of these in format and darn close to identical in track selections.

Album Description
Passionate remixes of the music featured in the critically acclaimed film CITY OF GOD from the very best Brazilian electronic artists and DJs."City of God" is the story of the slum gangs of Rio de Janeiro. Breathtaking and terrifying, urgently involved with its characters, it announces a new director of great gifts and passions: Fernando Meirelles. The film has been compared with Scorsese's "GoodFellas," and it deserves the comparison.
The movie takes place in slums constructed by Rio to isolate the poor people from the city center. They have grown into places teeming with life, color, music and excitement--and also with danger, for the law is absent and violent gangs rule the streets.
"City of God" does not exploit or condescend, does not pump up its stories for contrived effect, does not contain silly and reassuring romantic sidebars, but simply looks, with a passionately knowing eye, at what it knows. - Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times
