The Finest in Musical Sophistication........2006-11-10

Murcof has certainly done it again. His previous release, Martes, was already amazing enough! And now with Remembranza, he has outdone himself again. Organically and hauntingly beautiful. There is no one else out there that constructs music like this man. Seriously. Murcof is truly on a whole other mental plane of music construction. Just the first song alone on this disc completely envelopes you, and brings you into his world (Turn up the volume before you push play, it's gonna hit you real nice.) The way he chooses each note to sound and not to sound, the way the beats start off free-form and then miraculously culminate into the most inspiring, complex, yet so simple rhythms you ever heard. The way he utilizes orchestral arrangements, mostly string sections and piano, and gently makes them weave and undulate in the most heavenly way! This guy has completely turned my musical world upside down after getting wise to what he's all about. Murcof is the absolute sound of articulate sophistication and intelligence in music. Thank you Murcof. Seriously, thank you.

This is a fantastic CD. I originally purchased martes and I actually greatly prefer remembranza to martes. remembranza has a much more warm feeling, I thought martes is very good but a little on the sterile side.

Parkening sets the standard for others to compare to. Enjoyable tribute to Segovia. The type of guitar mastery that one can relax to after a hard days work. Enough said.

Have been loving this for over ten years!!.......2003-09-26

I bought this cassette over ten years ago (1992) when I started taking classical guitar lessons. Would listen to it on the way home from work, then had a baby nine years ago and have used it for lullaby music (works like a charm) for afternoon naps and nighttime. Still listen to it in the car when the kids fight and they mellow out instantly.

Finally buying it on CD because I think I wore a spot out on the cassette! I have listened to this masterpiece at least a thousand times and have never, ever tired of this most excellent work of art.

If you are a classical guitar fan, you will absolutely adore every single note played on this album/CD. I promise!! :)

sonic rapture..........2003-06-03

If anyone knows of a better sonically intoxicating cd than this please let me know. Possibly only Julian Bream's unreal 1982 Granados and Albeniz cd would top this one for me. Anyway just thought I would pass this thought along to anyone who may visit here. The tone is absolutely magical on this cd. This is the cd to listen to at night to chill out and get mellow while being enchanted to the max. Peace. I must go on... the tone, the tone. My god the tone.

Not just a tribute.......2001-07-31

Parkening shows how much he learned from Segovia. I have many of these pieces played by the Master. Parkening plays with a similar timbre, simlar dynamics and with a musicality just as deep as Segovia's. IF you like classical guitar you should own this one.

Wonderful, relaxing music.......2001-01-27

This cd will spend much time on my player. It is so lively, yet comforting music to listen to.

Parkening provides wonderful tribute to Segovia with Spanish compositions especially loved by the master, even some of them performed on one his Segovia's guitars.

For the classical guitar enthusiast, or just someone looking for that refreshing guitar music we here on the FM, this is a fine selection.

These 65 minutes of solo guitar playing--handsomely, intimately recorded--are a pleasure to listen to. Russell is a true virtuoso, playing with an ease and assurance which gives the recital the great subtle, variety it should have. He's equally at home with the catchy, playful "Zapateado" by De La Maza that opens the program as he is with Llobet's lyrical, singable, relaxed "El testament d'Amelia." The beautiful, lullaby-like "La filla del Marxant" (also by Llobet) is as smooth as silk, and the four pieces by Andres Segovia have a flavor all their own. The downright odd, but alluringly discordant "El Abejorro" by Pujol will enchant and puzzle you. The program is songlike, dancelike, familiar and new-sounding, and Russell's graceful way with each style is ideal. Every note, every delicate harmonic, is audible and important, but there's never a sense of underlining either a melodic or rhythmic phrase. Russsell lets the music, diverse and fascinating, speak for itself. A must for those who love the classical guitar, especially with a Spanish flavor. --Robert Levine

You also get Mario Castelnuovo-Tesdesco's popular Guitar Concerto No. 1--a particularly witty and spirited performance--which rounds out a really fine recital that shows Segovia at his very best. This album offers a nice cross section of the classical guitar repertoire, ranging from two Bach pieces to Torroba and Turina to twentieth century composers Manuel Ponce and Hector Villa-Lobos, plus Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Guitar Concerto no.1. It also includes music by Crespo, Segovia, and Sor, with some tracks previously unpublished.

While I am glad, in particular, to hear the Torroba,Ponce and Villa-Lobos, the monaural, two dimensional sound is not as flattering to Segovia as some MCA and DGG CDs. Segovia was at his height at the time these recordings were made, and we are fortunate to have them. At the same time, I would suggest the newcomer or casual Segovia or classical guitar listener go first for The Segovia Collection, Volume 3 (MCA), and Segovia in the music of Albeniz and Granados, which is core Segovia repertoire where his playing glows, and the sound is flattering.

This CD, while essential, is more for the student, performer and connoiseur of the classical guitar. It is perhaps the only Segovia recording of the Castelnuovo-Tedesco Concerto no. 1. I am glad to have the Ponce and Villa-Lobos selections, and Segovia's way with Torroba is incomparable. He has recorded the Bach elsewhere in better sound (MCA, DGG). I got it for the Bach, Torroba, Ponce, Villa-Lobos and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. (Segovia also plays Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Tarantella.)
