Editorial Reviews

Countless copycats have landed on the bandwagon since Josh Davis's debut, Endtroducing..., wreaked havoc in the dance and hip-hop world. But Davis, a.k.a. DJ Shadow, kept on top of his game with various collaborations--Blackalicious, U.N.K.L.E., Cut Chemist--and superlative 12-inches like "High Noon" and "Pre-Emptive Strike."

Now, a full six years later, he's back with a follow-up that is every bit as impressive as his debut, albeit in a different way. Once again, the producer has pushed his sampler to the limits, but this time he's brought with it a deeper, hungrier, more bad-ass spirit that's rarely found in modern dance music. There's a fabulous '80s vibe throughout (principally on tracks like "Monosylabik" and "You Can't Go Home Again"), along with the expected forays into b-boy culture (check the growling, massive "Treach Battle Break" and the funky-ass "Mashin' on the Motorway"). While it's identifiably Shadow, it ain't Endtroducing...Part 2. It is, however, a worthy and imaginative follow-up, with humor, wisdom, and musical understanding aplenty. (NOTE: This limited-edition version contains special packaging and a second CD that includes a 17-minute remix of the track "Pushin' Buttons.") --Paul Sullivan

3 out of 5 stars "Decent" Comes to Mind.......2007-05-12

The sophomore slump has by far become the norm in music and when you cake on the monumental disappointing effect that could have by following a landmark piece of art, well, to put it modestly, the stakes are high. 'The Private Press' is by no means the disaster it could have been, but it is nowhere near the cohesive groundbreaking masterpiece its predecesor was. A compilation of B-Sides is the generic thought that comes to mind.

"Monosylabik", with its geek-out sampler-effects extravaganza does not belong on any respectable album. Not only is the track an annoyance to the ears, it just goes to show that maybe Davis' music is all about sound or technique over substance.

"Mashin' on the Motorway", again, filler and very out of place. I think this could have been a novelty B-Side but should have DEFINITELY been replaced with "100 Metre Dash" from the "Six Days" single. "Mashin'" just sounds immature with its failed attempts at comedic road rage.

Those are the only two tracks I can say are bad. The rest of the songs are solid, just not album material.

The bookends (Letters from Home) are there for concept purposes, though you'd be hard-pressed to dissect any sort of concept in the body of the album. So instead of adding to the experience, they distract and are constant skips.

What works?

"Fixed Income", "Giving Up the Ghost" and the 2-part "Mongrel... Meets his Maker" are all showstoppers. An album created around those pieces may have been able to match 'Endtroducing...' in impact, though not in relevance and depth.

I admit, my expectations were ridiculously high back in '02 when I picked this up. It has since been five years and the album gets very little to no rotation. There is no mood, so I steer away from putting it in for the two tracks at a time that may fit how I feel that day. Instead, I take the highlights and include them on compilations where they DO stand out as opposed to sound desperately stranded as they do on this album.

3 out of 5 stars Lost Abstract.......2006-07-01

I can appreciate the fact that Davis is moving in his own direction but this just didnt do it for me. His style took a complete turn from the trip-hop aspect and presents more conversation filled segments that are rather boring. There are a couple tracks that showcase Shadow's DJ talent and a few other alright tracks but if your looking for endtroduing or preemtive strike you wont find it here.

4 out of 5 stars crazy.......2006-04-10

I first read the hype about the endtroducing album on amazon. but my experience with best sellers has not been good especially if they are old. I like to stick to the albums which are recent in case of artists i like. so i first got private press. and i was completely blown away. highlight of the album is the 5th track givin up the ghost. It has a very haunting feeling to it. starts with a synth rhythm and carries it for several measures. until drums are added after a pause. its a freak show after that. try to listen this song on church or hall setting in your surround system and it would magnify the feeling manyfolds. i cant give the name to the emotion which i feel when i hear this track. 8th is also good. 3rd track is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2006-02-07

DJ Shadow refuses to be labeled, and that is abundantly clear in this album. With elements of every genre under the sun, hip-hop, electronic, and even flashes of ambience to name a few.

Rarely have used words like "powerful" or "moving" with a hip-hop artist, but they apply here. "Blood On the Motorway" hits hard, and is the centerpiece of the album in my opinion. It touches a chord in the listener, and is truly one of those songs that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

DJ Shadow is fearless, and I thank him for being that way.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating..........2006-05-16

I really do like this album. Not as much as Endtroducing, but I'd still give it 5 stars, save one detail. The nifty cardboard two-CD case it comes in has a major flaw. The glue inside the case is very sticky, and when I got the CD, both CDs were stuck inside the case. When I was able to get them out, they were both coated in goop, which I spent about 30 minutes scrubbing off in order to get them to play. Sad, that such a good album, and otherwise a good product, is brought down in quality so much by a design flaw like this.

4 out of 5 stars Not worth the extra $$........2002-12-06

DJ Shadow's rising fame hasn't gotten to him... yet. It's fairly different than his previous music; it's an entirely different album than Entroducing. 'Fixed Income' sounds like something that might have been on earlier albums, but the similarities basically end there. The rest of the songs still have great flow with a lot of strange samples, but they're all great. He says that his music is hip-hop on the inside cover, and although I wouldn't quite call it that, but it has a much heavier influence in this album than in his previous ones.

The Limited Edition version is not really worth the extra [money] in my opinion. You get the "original version" of giving up the ghost which sounds pretty much the same. The 'Bonus CD' is a 12-minute long live performance by Shadow, Cut Chemist, and some other DJ. Yeah, its pretty good, but for almost double the price I want twice the music; in this case, you get an extra 16 minutes. You're better off getting it online, but hey, the lemur on the cover makes it all worth it.

5 out of 5 stars ...good slice of artistic sampladelica.......2002-11-16

I was tempted to give this 4 stars, but only because I gave Endtroducing...5 stars and this one is just not quite as good. Then I realized that Endtroducing...was so incredible it deserves 6 stars. And compared with a lot of the DJ-based garbage that's out there, Private Press really is worthy of the highest rating.

This album is quite different from Endtroducing...,with an 80's vibe and more samples of vocals and mechanical-sounding synths. Already, some fans expecting Entroducing...Part 2 have expressed disappointment, but all great artists refine their technique and approach, and that's just what DJ Shadow is--a great artist. Forget your rigidly defined notions of what hip hop is, or what techno is, or what rock is. This is simply brilliant, modern music that transcends all genre conventions.

Note: the bonus disc is worth having if you're already a committed DJ Shadow fan...but it's hardly essential.

5 out of 5 stars Oh boy, I love this album.........2002-10-18

Most "DJ" albums are pretty [bad], filled with repetitive, boring nonsense. Not this album! I must have listened to this CD about 20 times, every track on the CD is different. DJ Shadow is a true artist, this stuff is amazing. Buy this CD, support good music.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves you in surprise, in awe.......2002-08-31

What I love from this CD? Everything, I must say: how music emerges through endless layers of music, how DJ Shadow bends any Hip-Hop boundary -if there is one-, making you experience a crescendo feeling of surprise and awe. Yes, I've listened to DJ Shadow before. But then I listen to this CD and all I can do is take a deep breath, close my eyes and relax. Chill-out listening to every detail in it: every ding, every dang, the furious yuxtaposing of beats. Have a yoga session. Then I ask myself if this is not a masterpiece. Damn, sure it is! I cannot take it off my player, and it' s been more than three weeks since I bought it. Now, you looking for something really refreshing? Check this out then.

As the name sound and vision would imply, this is a packing of The Private Press with a bonus DVD containing videos for You Can't Go Home Again, Six Days, and Mashin' on the Motorway. However, this seems to only be available in Europe, so unless you have a region-free DVD player, the DVD will be useless. The album itself is the standard issue, with no bonus tracks. If you have the ability to play the videos, this is a good get. If not, I believe you can still see them on DJ Shadow's website.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best 'special' version out there.......2005-06-21

As you would expect in a follow-up to a great album that took 6 years, there were probably about 10 or so versions of this album that came out, with either bonus videos or extra tracks. If you're going to get one, go with this. For starters, most of the other version added various b-sides or videos which can now be found on The Private Repress (which is also a good pickup). The only other version with stuff not on that album is the 2-disc with Pushin' Buttons. The alternate version of Giving Up the Ghost is nice, but not that much different, and Pushin' Buttons is an ok live track, but doesn't really hold up to repeated listening. So now we're left with this version, which contains two bonus tracks: Flashback, and Dark Days. Flashback is a track found on a compilation called "Turntables by the Bay", and sounds similar to the Endtroducing-era stuff, and since that mix is difficult to find, this makes it worth it. Dark Days sounds, to me anyway, like High Noon's evil twin, with a melancholy western-style guitar line. This is only available elsewhere on the Dark Days single (which is not cheap to come by, and only has this song, and a version with talking on it) or on the One To Grow On promo, which is a great get as it has Lost and Found, and the extended version of Midnight in a Perfect World. So definitely pick up this version of The Private Press. And let's hope we don't have to wait until 2008 for the next album.

No, I know who this guy is...thanks to some downloads.
DJ Shadow is a very together young sir who knows what he wants to do...and then he does it.

and if this thing he wants to do is make music, then he's done it.
it's interesting how he can take a 1960's soul tune and change it juuuust enough to make it hip to listen to it again.

recommended if you like multi-genre cds...
