5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-07-22

I heard the song "Wish" on Pandora and was immediately intrigued by this group. Then heard "Blue Eyed Boy" and decided to take a chance on buying the CD. I was hooked on the first listen and I like almost every track. Most of the songs grab you, are edgy, and are good rock songs a bit reminiscent of Heart. Personally, I think the first seven tracks are the strongest; "Wish" is awesome. The only song I don't care for near the end is "Ages", which is not a good fit for this CD. Unfortunately, since this album is apparently a departure from the norm for Kosheen, I'd be hesitant to purchase any of their other work at this point. I'd like to think this CD is the start of a new direction for the group.

3 out of 5 stars THIS CD CANNOT BE USED WITH YOUR MP3 PLAYER.......2006-03-29

I loved Resist and was looking forward to this album, but was very disappointed when I discovered I could not transfer the music to my MP3 player. You are forced to install a player from the CD to listen the music on your PC, which is very poor quality. I wish I could get a refund.

5 out of 5 stars Different, but edgier.......2006-02-24

One of the things that drew me to this album was the fact that it was named 'Kokopelli' and the pictures of Native Americans on its cover (as well as that of the singles 'All In My Head' and 'Wasting My Time'), because Native American history has been a really interesting thing for me, and I was intrigued as to how a British band would take their music and blend it with the elements of Native American culture.

But, that aside, this album is really good and I could practically listen to it a few days in a row.

The first time I heard it, I really didn't like too many of the songs except for 'All In My Head', but it was really weird how I really wanted to like this album (I bought Kokopelli before Resist, which is unconventional) and something about it kept drawing me back.

Now I really like the album and feel I can identify with many of the songs in the album, especially 'Coming Home' and 'Recovery'. Oh, and 'Wish' as well.

Many fans of this album really like the song 'Recovery', which is, unfortunately, not one of my favorites. I don't get the huge hype about the song, although I do see how it can really affect the listener and how it can relate so well to what many of us, as teenagers, experience.

My favorite tracks are:
All In My Head
Coming Home
Avalanche
Little Boy

I don't believe in comparing Kokopelli to Resist, as one is a dance, drum 'n' bass album, while the other is rock and breakbeat. But if I had to choose, I'd choose Kokopelli over Resist, though both albums were exceptional ones.

I'm looking forward to their next record!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!.......2005-09-19

RESIST was great. KOKPELLI set up a new standard. Matured, dense, dark, energetic, poetic. Belongs to my top 20 collection, beside Contino Sessions, Bekaup Fish, New Forms, Weekend In London (D. Clark), Colours (Cabaret Voltaire), Kapital (Laibach), etc.

3 out of 5 stars Sophmore Slump?.......2005-07-10

People either adore the darker, guitar-driven direction Kosheen's sophmore disc takes, or lament the loss of the deliciously melodic, drum & bass crawl of their freshman outing, "Resist;" unfortunately, I'm the latter.

Singer Sian Evan on "Resist" sounds like a mix between Ruth-Ann from Olive and the wistful lead singer of the now defunct "Mono." Here, she apes the punky chick vocals of "Sneaker Pimps."

So, buy which ever one you prefer. For me, it will always be the more simplistic and jazzy beauty of "Resist." And for those who agree with me, another CD I found equally compelling, is the beautiful and surprising compilation, "Mastercuts Early Hours ." Lotsa soulful Kruder & Dorfmeister Mixes (the gods of drum & bass) and a helluva vocal discovery in Jhelisa Anderson, on "Friendly Pressure," which indeed, reminds me of smooth stylings of Kosheen's debut.

I viewed the Braxton Brothers at the JVC Jazz Festival in Concord, CA,in 1999. I enjoyed their performance and the duo seems very loving of each other and they have great personalities on stage also. I heard of them thoughout a few years and think these two brothers deserve more recognition, but I know in due time they will. They are very talented.

The Braxton Bros. for me is a new group and proved to be easy listening. If you enjoy the likes of John Klemmer, Bob James, Earl Klugh, and Grover Washington then these guys will have something for you. Extremely well played and produced. YOu won't be disappointed.

Why does this CD rate 5 stars. Because the song Francesca IS smooth jazz. It's very rare that one song captures the essence of a music form but this song takes you within the music and leaves you there in a fantasy!

5 out of 5 stars Superior.......2003-11-12

This CD to me is rated with high ranks. It is very inspirational moving and creative among all. If I could posses this CD caliber again, I truly will cherish it. It was stolen in 1997 from me with regrets. No music store has been able to get it for me. As I resided in Fort Worth, Texas, for 6 years no one ever heard of it nor did they reconize the artist that wrote it. To me that was extremely strange to me

5 out of 5 stars Incredible soundtrack!.......2005-07-19

The amazing music was one of the things that stood out to me most as I viewed the IMAX film "Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West." I had only seen it once but I went ahead and bought the soundtrack. I still remember being BLOWN AWAY the first time I listened to it! And my spirits still soar every time I put this CD on!
Some of the tracks have an interesting 'tribal' twist to them - not my favorite for listening. (Just opinion.) But the orchestral tracks more than make up for it! They really capture the bold and adventuresome spirit of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Just listening to this recording makes me wanna go out and conquer the world.
I highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West.......2003-03-18

After visiting my local IMAX Theater and watching the film " Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West", I found myself playing the music from the film over and over in my head. The epic soundtrack is beautiful and symbolic of the struggle to discover the wild west. In addition, the CD has a few bonus cuts from native flute master R. Carlos Nakai, that are a very nice fit with the recording. I am very glad I purchased the recording and I think you will be too!

I recently purchased the CD, but have carried an audio tape of this music in my car for years. It is beautiful and very calming - great for freeway traffic stress.

5 out of 5 stars very well laid out.......2004-03-27

I bought this tape in 1996 during a trip to California. Alas my tape is no longer any good and I have searched the internet to find another tape or CD. It is a delightful sound of music in the sense that all of the sounds which are from a variety of not well known instruments blend together to form a unique sound of purposeful music

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Brazilian melodies!.......2000-11-09

A wonderfully rhythmic, melodic album, excellently produced, and featuring Pamela Driggs's beautiful voice. If you like Brazilian rhythms, or if you're an old Astrud Gilberto fan like me, you owe it to yourself to seek out this extremely enjoyable album. Why this album is out of print (as of this writing) is beyond me. It is a golden gem, with the standout cuts being almost too numerous to mention; Angel Voices, River Wide, and Sanctuary among them. The quote on the back of the album describes it far better than I ever could... "A cohesive program of exuberant rhythms and seductive melodies that evolves with an uncommon blend of logic and emotions. Pamela's voice is a remarkable instrument, defining the bittersweet edge of the Brazilian style with deft perfection and a natural ease that's totally disarming." Mark Holston, JAZZIZ.

This is a great CD, i will not argue otherwise, but the seller who is advertising that the CD is out of print, and wants $70 is trying to swindle you. I just bought it at a concert at Binghamton University for $15.

5 out of 5 stars Several steps forward for Brazilian Jazz.......2006-06-14

This 1994 CD by Trio Da Paz is another great example of how Brazilian Jazz has been moving forward, with so much great taste and musiquality.
Each cut in this CD is an absolute winner, no fillers, and the performances are so well arranged and executed especially since this project so huge, but Romero, Dudu and Nilson have been able to pull it off.
It's also important to mention Trio Da Paz' guests here:
    - Herbie Mann / Flutes
    - Claudio Roditi / Trumpet & Flugelhorn
    - Nana Vasconcelos / Percussion
    - Maucha Adnet & Alana Da Fonseca / Vocals
    - Jorge Silva & Cyro Baptista / Percussion.

Two reviewers mentioned that this one is better than the original, and that the original is way better; I don't know which one is better since both recordings are completely different from each other, all I know is that the original was Bossa Nova, this is in the Afro-Brazilian Jazz rhythm and each one has to be graded in its own context. This one is awesome !!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original soundtrack.......2006-03-09

Yes, I feel that this album done by Trio da Paz surpasses the original soundtrack to the movie Black Orpheus for two reasons. Firstly and most importantly, the original soundtrack is much more of a depiction of the movie on CD. The sounds of the movie are dubbed overtop the songs and the tracks change abruptly. This makes it abrasive to listen to and enjoy. Secondly, Trio da Paz is an incredible group and their expressions really capture the themes and intentions of Jobim and Bonfa. If you felt that Manhã de Carnaval, the main theme to the movie, was haunting and evocative in its original form, you will greatly love and appreciate what has been done on this album. I've seen Trio da Paz live more than once, and each time they play they have copies of this album available for purchase and mention it sometime during a set on stage. They feel very strongly about their work here and that should say something about the emotion in this album.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the original.......2004-12-09

The original Black Orpheus that set the world on fire is available fro Verve. Why buy imitators when you can get the real thing? I highly recommend the original soundtrack. Though if you want to hear how influential that sound from 1959 still is today, this is an example.

5 out of 5 stars The Morning of the Carnival.......1999-08-12

In 1958 in Cannes a Brazilian Movie set not only the movie world on a spin, but the music world went along for the ride. The Black Orpheus would become the vehicle that would introduce the world to the music of Luiz Bonfia and Antonio Carlos Jobim, This album remains faithful to the movie soundtrack. From the opening "A Felicidade" to the closing "Samba De Orfeo", My favorite from this album and the movie is "Manha De Carnaval" (Morning of the Carnival) its haunting and longing themes are truly beautiful. Any lover of true Brazilian music must have this CD, Bravo Trio Da PAz

    5 out of 5 stars It's a shame he followed his leader, Bobby Watson . . ........2004-02-12

. . . to the ill-fated Kokopelli Records, the late Herbie Mann's attempt to establish an independent label for accessible, mainstream jazz artists. Why a shame? Because this, his brilliant sophomore disc, not only has gone largely unheard, but this detour probably set his career back about a decade.

Fortunately, he has recovered very nicely, thank you, with a wonderful disc on Mythology, La Bikina, and an equally fine outing on Criss Cross, The Process.

Many of the virtues that were later to reveal themselves on the latter two discs are already fully present on this outing: a deep folkloric sensibility; a lightly worn virtuosity, always in service to a group concept; a very attractive, dancing, lilting approach to his instrument, very much in a Villa-Lobos vein; an uncanny ability to choose entirely apt playing partners--and to lead them authoritatively yet democratically; and the ability to compose attractive compositions in a wide variety of styles.

The band, reading like a whose who of younger musicians, including a twenty-something Mark Turner on tenor sax turning in perhaps his finest playing on disc, Larry Grenadier on bass, Adam Cruz on drums, and old guy Milton Cardona on percussion, cooks up a storm. Easily able to shift effortlessly between ballads, burners, and mid-tempo mood pieces, this band exhibits a protean flexibility found only among the top practitioners, proving once again the wealth of musicianship among younger jazzers.

Anyone interested in the roots of the Nu Latin jazz will certainly want to check out this glorious but rather neglected disc.
