Berlin's Jazzanova are world-champion programmers, turning extreme technical skills into astonishing electro funk Muzak. Why it takes six grown men to make this music is a mystery, but in classic German style, the results are sleek, efficient, and intelligent. With tripped-up funk beats as their base, Jazzanova adorn detailed, shifting arrangements on In Between with various vocalists (Ursula Rucker, Capitol A) to intimate styles as diverse as Sergio Mendes's Brazilian sophistication, nu-electro, breakbeat hip-hop, and retro jazz fusion. Jazzanova's attempt at smooth soul music falls flat, but by and large, their fertile songs and staggering studio skills make In Between a landmark of the nu-jazz genre (along with recent albums by Koop and Cinematic Orchestra). Highlights include the Daft Punk-meets-Earth, Wind & Fire collision of "Mwela, Mwela"; the simmering street funk of "Another New Day"; and the oozing synthesizer color-forms of "Soon." Sampling and spinning nu-jazz dreams for dancers and listeners alike, Jazzanova educate while they entertain. --Ken Micallef

For a man who gets his biggest kicks surfing the waves and strumming his guitar on a lonely beach in native Hawaii, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has carved out quite a remarkable career on the mainland. His 2003 album, On and On, debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and subsequently went platinum on the back of hit single "The Horizon Has Been Defeated." The follow-up, meanwhile, seems destined to shine even brighter. The drifting chords and soft voice are still in place, only now Johnson's instinct for melody has sharpened alongside his ability to self-edit. These small concessions make third album, In Between Dreams, his most conspicuous, particularly on tracks like the three-minute relationship drama, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," and "Breakdown," a song he originally recorded for Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People album remade here to reveal its full stripped-down loveliness. Imagine all the coconuts it will buy. -- Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

After the self-released Somedays and Twentythree Places, Nashville's Matt Wertz signed up with a proper label for Everything in Between. On his third full-length, the Missouri-bred troubadour mixes pop, folk, and blues into an easygoing, yet ebullient sound. As he exults on "The Way I Feel," "Everything inside of me is singin' out." You can hear Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and if you listen really closely, even Michael Jackson, circa Off the Wall, in Wertz's soulful voice (see "Naturally" for proof). Not too surprisingly, Wertz claims all three as influences, along with James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and Hall & Oates. Interestingly, he also cites the seriously un-cool Doobie Brothers and Toto, but the lack of pretension is refreshing. Aside from "The Way I Feel," the propulsive "Heartbreaker," which evokes the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love," is another catchy tune that deserves a lot of airplay. The other selections may be less memorable, but there are no real clunkers. Matt Wertz doesn't have the most original sound and he seems to be rather risk-averse at this point in his career, but the singer/songwriter has an appealing style. --Kathleen C. Packaged as two albums on one disc, these are among the best of Van Zandt's erratic studio recordings. The first is often overlooked, but it has many songs of dark, marvelous realism, true and accurate as arrows. Kevin Eggers's production is never heavy or busy: he mostly lets the songs breathe beside piano and guitar. And the poetic heights of the title track and "The Highway Kind" are remarkable by any standard. Late Great is important for a little known Guy Clark song "Don't Let the Sunshine Fool You," as well as an orchestrated "Pancho and Lefty" and the sweetly simple "Heavenly Houseboat Blues." Both records show Townes's belief in the abracadabra of words, that their magic is as primary to being human as love and death and kindness and cruelty--those intense qualities that distinguish his work. --Roy KastenAlbum Description

Great introduction.......2007-02-16
The first album included is High, Low, and In Between. It's probably the lesser of the two choices, but still very worthwhile. Van Zandt is usually accompanied by some subtle acoustic guitar, often combined with some bass, or even bigger band arrangements. He certainly has a skill for melancholy--songs like "You are Not Needed Now" and the title track really get under your skin with simple melodies and some occasionally chilling lyrics. He does include a few upbeat numbers, though, like the great and humorous "No Deal," and the groovy "Standin.'" There are a few weaker tracks, most notably the gospel tunes "Two Hands" and "When He Offers His Hand;" they lack the personality that Van Zandt is so capable of injecting into a great song. Overall, though, there are some great highlights.
The second album is even better. The Late Great Townes Van Zandt opens with "No Lonesome Tune," a very homey, heartwarming tune combined with some really cool music--the heavy bass sounds great combined with the mandolin. The singer sounds totally at ease in the relaxed "German Mustard" blues, and rips out some of his most harrowing compositions, the mysterious "Ships of Andilar," and the oft-covered "Pancho and Lefty." On both discs, he shows great skill at storytelling, and it's too bad every other country singer had a hit with "Pancho and Lefty," but its own composer couldn't. This album really shows off his deft skill at mystery, since more often the music matches his deceptively dense words. Again, though, there are also fun moments like the cover, "Honky Tonkin.'" Also again, though, there are a few weaker moments--"Sad Cinderella" sounds like a textbook paraphrased rewrite of Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately," and "Heavenly Houseboat Blues" isn't quite a compelling closer.
All in all, though, Townes Van Zandt has made some great music, and deserves to be much better known. This disc is a steal, containing two solid albums' worth of music, with some music that's good, and some that's GREAT. If you're unfamiliar with TVZ, I recommend that this is as good a place as any to get into some great music!

TOTO: Falling in between...... Toto is studioextragavanza with flair and creativity..........2007-07-23
Toto has very good musicans who can handle their instruments, and it shows on their latest Falling in Between. Track 1 Falling in between has a light touch of heavy metal goodness, with some "extraordinary jungle touch" over it`s soundpicture. It`s a great mix with heavymetal/studiosound and a master stroke vokal too. Light headbanging goodie, goodie, helps too. Track 2 Dying on my feet, is more into jazz/funky territory. Great heavy metal touch on this one too, but it`s the room inbetween, with the different instruments that make the breathing touch of magic. Awsome. Track 3 Bottom of your soul begins with a very moody drum beat which sparkles in your ears. It has also that nature`s own jungle touch over it`s moody atmosphere. Oh yes we are in classical "Toto Africa" mood on this one. Track 4 King of the World is more into classical "light heavy metal" Toto once again. An uplifting mood shines on this one alltrough.Track 5 Hooked, sparks away some blues mood, With the right stroke on the guitar strings to hold up the quality right trough. Track 6 Simple Life is the first "slow one tempo song". It`s a minor let down. It doesn`t take off in a way.Average i will say. Track 7 Taint your world is back in uptempo heavy metal mood once again. It`s fastback.hardtop, sprint, halleluja, alltrough. Track 8 Let it go is in the funky land of Toto. It swing`s funky happy alltrough. Track 9 Spiritual Man is so spiritual. A real modern Toto classic, which give you the shivers down your`e spinal cord. Very moving, With a religious touch which gives it the extravaganza heaven up above.Track 10. No end is in sight end`s up the Cd. Tickling gitar riffs, and a great vocal.Oh Yes, this one holds up the standard, and the vocal is great too. Toto is a group with quality studio extragavanza all over, and this Cd is not an exception.

A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10
Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.
Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.
Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.
This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.
"one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26
Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.
The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Album Description
This songwriter and mother of four, who lives a stones throw from the town she grew up in, doesn't fit into any stereotype. She's garnered comparisons to Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Dashboard Confessional, and Roseanne Cash. Her songs, as solid as Georgia oak, are played and sung with an emotional grit under the nails that comes from digging in life's mundane and less illuminated holes. These songs grab you with Lori's signature strident, soulful, and unapologetic vocals sharing earnest observations and stories of growing up and growing old, of loves and losses, winners and losers, guns and god, and drinkers and dreamers in a town that is resting uncomfortably between its blue collar roots and modern suburbia. Incapable of artifice, Lori McKenna speaks of the bitter and the sweet, but doesn't simply write songs, she documents her life, and in turn ours, in word and melody. Meet Lori McKenna and welcome to BittertownCustomer Reviews:

An Instant Classic.......2006-01-05
The album opens strongly with the driving desperation of small town escape that is "Bible Song," which still manages to pause briefly to show us a moment of her offbeat view of the world when she pauses in the middle of describing her a cousins's suicide to ponder "and how does she explain to those kids about the sorry thing Daddy did." "Stealing Kisses" plays like a prequel to John Prines classic "Angel From Montgomery." However, possibly the strongest moment on the cd is the spectrum spanning tales of addiction "If You Ask" and "Monday Afternoon." Lest you think all is gloom and doom however, McKenna proves she can do the lighter end of the register, with the confectiony sweet "Mr. Sunshine." The only weak note is the immature "Lone Star" but it is lyrically spot on and McKenna takes such relish in advising her old classmate "tell the girls in the beer line/that you're an old, good friend of mine" that it ranks, at worst, as a guitly pleasure.
Lori McKenna is one of the best voices to come on the scene in a long time--both as a singer and a writer.

But this CD is much more than the music, Michael Grimaldi recalls his friendship and admiration of Hyman in extensive liner notes, and uniquely, takes the listener on a journey with him through personal stories and rare photos of Phyllis. This CD is obviously a labor of love, and it shows. What it means for fans of Phyllis Hyman is a unique gift from someone who knew her not only as a musical legend, but as a beautiful talented friend. If I were forced to choose one CD from the many I have of hers, this one would be it. Buy it, no buy two and give one to someone you love.

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls)."I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
