Fabric 17

Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
"I always love risk taking when it comes to my mixing. Marrying the most awkward music together often turns out to be crazy and sexy... it'll compliment the artist’s work while challenging the listener's mind."

Product Description
Akufen, AKA Marc Leclair, brings you Fabric 17 – the newest installment from Fabric Recordings. Following Akufen’s hugely successful artist album My Way two years ago, Fabric presents his first ever DJ mix CD – showcasing some of the sharpest record labels and producers.

Fabric 17 is a minimal house tour-de-force, bursting with energy, excitement, and invention. In keeping with the 4/4 beat ethic, the 21-track CD keeps it clever, catchy, and brilliantly detailed – beautifully mixed in an extremely individual style. Akufen’s love of all things quirky bleeds from the grooves – check The Rip Off Artist’s hymn to poverty meeting Senor Coconut, or the drug-addictive Crackhaus for evidence.

4 out of 5 stars A well deserved 4.5 stars.......2007-07-24

This mix is pure quality. All the more impressive as it was recorded in a single take using just a couple of record decks. The product description is pretty accurate so dont think I need to elaborate much further, this is a charming little nugget, engaging and full of personality. The cheese factor of a track like Senor Coconuts (a version of Smoke on the Water) may put you right off this cd but within the context of this fun and frivolous set it may be appreciated on the grounds of pure novelty. I find this mix works particularly well when gathering for the giddy anticipation of a few cans before a night out.

Album Description

Aim, AKA Andy Turner, is a cinematic British trip-hop producer who retains close ties to the rap influences of his youth. The son of a jazz musician, Aim began his music career in 1989 as a rap DJ. He later started producing as well and was signed to Mark Rae's Grand Central label, where he produced three successful artist albums.

Fabric Live 17 is an unhurried journey through Aim's record collection and influences. Like his DJ sets, he mixes different styles of music together - ranging from Hip Hop, to soul, to funk - while giving it continuity and progression.

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the above review.......2005-09-13

This is a much better album than the above reviewer suggests.
The fact that he is such a fan of all the previous FabricLive albums shows he doesn't really know about this stuff.

True, it is not an exemplary piece of DJ mixing heaven, rather it is a tight and knowledgable serious of selections, many of which are rare or hard to find.

An excellent album to listen and chill out with, not a piece of dance floor heaven.

1 out of 5 stars So disappointed - sounds like a grade eight mix tape.......2005-02-24

I have been a fan of the Fabriclive releases since the first one. I can't even believe that this album is associated with the same series that brought us epic mixes by the likes of Freeland and Lavelle. The tracks aren't even mixed (or remixed). It's like I went and downloaded a bunch of songs that I liked, burned them onto a CD, played them on random while pretending to "DJ" at a club. Shameful, I wish I could get my money back for this one. I wish I could give it a "zero" rating.
