Anyone whose CD collection is expansive enough to contain both Mos Def and Jack Johnson will easily find room somewhere between for the sophomore album from Clarence Greenwood, aka Citizen Cope. The singer-songwriter, who got his start playing DJ in the exquisitely laidback Washington D.C. hip-hop outfit Basehead, works hard to smudge the lines that separate genres, throwing together blues, beats and books in socially-conscious jams like "Bullet and a Target" and "D'Artagan's Theme." Meshell Ndegeocello helps out on the low-lit love song "Sideways," while Carlos Santana brings his usual fretboard fireworks to "Son's Gonna Rise." -- Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
Mellow and Groovy and Cool as Hell..........2007-04-16
Out of the three albums released, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings is my favorite for a number of reasons. First, this was the album that really got me into Cope. There are some incredibly catchy and beautiful songs here. It starts off with "Night Becomes Day," which is really funky and upbeat. It will have you groovin within the first second. This song is followed by another real gem: a funny little story called "Pablo Picasso." "Son's Gonna Rise" and "Bullet and a Target" are probably his best known songs on the album and they are both a total blast. "Son's" is a happy, hopeful, head-bobbing song about determination and redemption and "Bullet" is a big, brilliant social commentary about the hardships of urban poverty told from a totally natural, personal point of view. But, aside from the more mainstream tracks there are gorgeous ballads, such as the mesmerizing "Hurricane Waters" and the slow, jazzy masterpiece "Sideways" performed with Carlos Santana. "My Way Home," "D'Artagnan's Theme," and "Fame" are all deeply emotional pieces about love, loss, acceptance and freedom. "Penitentiary" is a cool, melodic rock song with a great beat and "Deep" is an AMAZING instrumental that ends the album on a floaty, light, carefree vibe.
Another reason that I love this album is because it seems to be the most natural and genuine of all of Cope's work. Everything that he has ever done has been superb, but for some reason this is the album that most people tend to really relate with. It is organic and raw in a totally unique way-- the fluid melodies and hip beats keep it funky and danceable, but the emotional, smart lyrics and crooning vocals give it a stripped-down quality that allow you to open your heart to it in a way that a lot of other hip-hop and rock music does not. I could obviously talk about this music forever. Cope is a special artist who earns an infinite degree of respect from everyone who hears him. His music is perfect for any music lover because he completely defies borders...all that you need to enjoy it is a peaceful, mellow attitude, an open mind, and maybe a nice party substance or two =). Also, if you have a chance to see him live, DO NOT pass it up! Five stars forever.
Verbal Manipulation.......2007-03-18
I think he gets quarters from people, because he is a transient.
The last line says "...you a painting.", referring to his audience.
He talks to the painting about the lady he loves. A woman who is a concept and is also represented visually everywhere in NY. She is pretty prominant in Memphis, too.
The guy that CG is portraing here is wacked.
Check out the end of track 1 and let me know if you'll be ready to hold Happiness against your chest, when it's your turn?
The whole cd is like this.
If you are smart, don't read the lyrics!
What is a kid from Tennessee doing with a Dumas' novel? God...

Like G. Love, Citizen Cope is a musical mixologist, fusing sluggish hip-hop beats with mellow piano melodies and new-school blues with easy-listening pop. On his debut album, Cope--née Clarence Greenwood, former DJ for the rap group Basehead--sounds at times like both a younger, drawling Sting and a folksy Wyclef Jean as he sings over slow, loose, loungy instrumentals. Though his music is a patchwork of breezy styles, Cope's lyrics tackle some serious subjects. "Contact" confronts the hypocrisy of police profiling, while "200,000 (in Counterfeit 50 Dollar Bills)" details the work of a shifty middle-aged hustler. Cope tells stories about crazy women ("Mistaken ID") and lost souls with short fuses ("Appetite (for Lightin' Dynamite)"), and even fantasizes about the musician's fight with the stay pure ("Salvation"), tucking a gritty street realism between the rosy rhythms dancing through these 13 songs. --Jennifer MaerzCustomer Reviews:

This man's got SOUL.......2007-05-06
Some of the songs will have you straight groovin, like the sort of hip-hop/rocker "Let the Drummer Kick," and some, like "Teresa," "Salvation," and "Holdin' On" will seriously make you want to cry because they are just that gorgeous. Not all of the tracks are perfect, but they each hold a little piece of Cope's spirit, which shines through this album like a the big, bright star that he is. I could literally talk about this artist forever, but words are so trite in comparison to the magic of his music. Buy this album, or The Clarence Greenwood recordings...there's no way you will regret it.

Few folks have made sleepy, 420-friendly, white boy rock with quite the pop acumen and skills that Citizen Cope displays here. Cagily smudging the lines between blues, hip-hop, rock and reggae, this former Basehead DJ has the easy, lackadaisical flow of G. Love combined with songs that rival those by Jack Johnson and (at times) Ben Harper. Every Waking Moment is a super smart-sounding refinement of Clarence Greenwood AKA Citizen Cope's work to date. In terms of production alone, it'd not be an overstatement to call this a breakthrough. The accompaniment to "More Than It Seems," for instance, mixes strings, backing vocals, vibes and a melodica, and it sounds perfect. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

As should be expected, Steely Dan's four-disc box set isn't like all the other rectangular pop-music retrospectives/tombstones. Not for Messrs. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the typically bloated, ego-jacking crate padded out with childhood recordings, suspect cassette demos, and broken-down session takes, annotated by candid snapshots purloined from some distant relative. Nope, this is simply Dan Mach 1's complete oeuvre, from the craft-conscious pop of Can't Buy a Thrill to the jazzy torpor of Gaucho, laid out chronologically and neatly compressed into four discs, with not even a handful of "bonus" cuts (a live recording of "Bodhisattva," a '71 demo of "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" with Flo and Eddie on the side, "Here at the Western World," a Royal Scam outtake, and their obligatory soundtrack cameo, "FM") to color outside the lines. The liner notes are suitably smart, even if they occasionally strain trying to stay astride of B&F's patent sardonicism. For the aspiring Steely Dan completist, a fine place to start. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Citizen Steely Dan: 1972-1980.......2007-05-09
Great for the novice Dan fan.......2007-01-22
I've since replaced this box set with the remastered versions of the original albums. But for the novice Dan fan who is looking to learn more, this is a great place to begin. As other reviewers have noted, it's unfortunate that the producers of this set had to rearrange the original album order of some of the songs in order to get everything onto four CDs, but that's a minor quibble. I also thought the enclosed booklet was pretty terrific, too. As I said, when I bought this I knew next to nothing about Steely Dan and with nowhere else to turn for information about the band (remember, I bought this in 1993--before the Web), the book served as a good primer for getting me up to speed on who they were and how they came to be.
Great music. Good value for the price.
5-Stars? Of course!.......2006-09-18
I won't rehash the well-explained contents of this box set; instead I'll throw out a few tangential observations. It may not have been quite as obvious at the time, but Steely Dan were one of very, very few successful rock bands to exist apart from really any prevailing movements in the history of rock. One could draw some variably vague connections to jazz, soul, pop, hippie-era rock, California 70s singer-songwriters, or even the kind of ironies that would later fluorish in the best of the post-punk generation (Elvis Costello, XTC, Talking Heads and Pavement were all very much spiritual descendants of Steely Dan, in many ways), but Steely Dan weren't exactly any of those things. But they scrupulously maintained a rather erudite ability to draw selectively from most or all of those things. Music geeks (of the best sort)...that's the expression I'm hunting for.
Becker and Fagen also weren't afraid to really get close to the edge with their sense of irony, or satire: there are any number of songs ("Kid Charlemagne" and "Everything You Did" both spring quickly to mind) aimed at a sort of character who might well be listening to a well-worn copy of 'Royal Scam' whilst the deal goes down, and they also didn't exclude themselves from the critiques, the debaucheries, or the damnations. To be able to do this and actually get away with it is a real indication of brilliance, either as songwriters, or perhaps as social commentators.
In any case, this is great and adventurous music through and through - the textured spaciousness of "Your Gold Teeth I," the cacophonous jazz riffs of "Parker's Band," the keyboard pyrotechnics of "Your Gold Teeth II" (apparently, 2 incomplete snipets of songs rearranged into one complete one), or "Deacon Blues" - a perfect creation, blending a Sinatra-worthy melody with production touches that would rival Pink Floyd (or Radiohead).
Socio-critical sonic architecture at its' finest.
-David Alston
Steely Dan's decade(1970-80)........2006-08-04
However,it remains an exceptional document of the band's musical intelligence.
With the possible exception of Lou Reed, rarely such songwriting ability has been so perfect, some of the songs the duo penned could be printed as novels,it's a brilliant job indeed...
Add the superior musicianship to those songwriting skills & you get STEELY DAN,the most subtle band the USA produced.
All the stuff here deserves a good 5 stars,i gave only 4 because some unedited or unofficial live stuff would have been greatly appreciated!

No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31
As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.
I would call some of these pieces "newage"..........2006-08-02
Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13
This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.
If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.

"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

The worst I've seen from LoC.......2007-03-07
8.LoC Intro
This was pretty funny.
9.Baby Punchers
4/5 The original version was better, mainly since this version is greatly raped by the bridge.
10.Genocidal Tendancies
4/5 Sounds nothing like a Leftover Crack song, but it's still pretty good.
11....And Out Comes the N-Bomb!
4/5 This is pretty good. One of the higher points of the album actually.
12.Life Causes Cancer
1/5 Ugh....I just don't wanna talk about it. CV song gone bad, like I said before.
13.World War 4
4.5/5 I really want to give this a 5, but it is completely RAPED by the chorus. Everything else is absolute perfection, but the chorus is just terrible.
14.Supermarket Song
2/5 I think this is a Citizen Fish cover, or a Subhumans cover. Well, I haveen't heard the original, but this stands out in about, no way.
15.Reason For Existance
3.5/5 This is the other CF or SH cover, I think. It's better than the last song, but still aint that great. There are some great parts, but for the most part, it is a "meh" song. No real melody or anything.
Okay, people have been totally whining to me about how this review is "garbage" because I couldn't listen to the Citizen Fish side of the split. Well, to stop these idiots from causing me more trouble, I did listen to the Citizen Fish side of the split. I'll just say that it was alot better than Leftover Crack's disappointment.
There, happy now?! Leave me alone now please.
This is probably going to be the final Leftover Crack album. Well, I just wish the went out with a bang, but I guess not all bands can do that.

As a key member of La Coka Nostra alongside Mr. White (aka Everlast of House Of Pain), Ill Bill (Non Phixion) and Big Left, with production by DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), DJ Lethal (House Of Pain), Ill Bill, Sick Jacken (Psycho Realm) & more, his lyrical presence will be experienced by stadiums this year. Slaine landed a co-starring role in Ben Affleck's directorial debut, Dennis Leahne's ''Gone Baby Gone,'' alongside Morgan Freeman, Casey Affleck & Ed Harris, scheduled for 2007 release. The White Man is the Devil Volume 2 is a controversial look into the cocaine trade through the eyes of an addict. Featuring appearances by Everlast, Danny Boy, DJ Lethal, B-Real, Ill Bill, Edo G, more, all original production, and a surprisingly deft lyrical delivery while dealing with controversial issues.Customer Reviews:
