Anyone whose CD collection is expansive enough to contain both Mos Def and Jack Johnson will easily find room somewhere between for the sophomore album from Clarence Greenwood, aka Citizen Cope. The singer-songwriter, who got his start playing DJ in the exquisitely laidback Washington D.C. hip-hop outfit Basehead, works hard to smudge the lines that separate genres, throwing together blues, beats and books in socially-conscious jams like "Bullet and a Target" and "D'Artagan's Theme." Meshell Ndegeocello helps out on the low-lit love song "Sideways," while Carlos Santana brings his usual fretboard fireworks to "Son's Gonna Rise." -- Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Mellow and Groovy and Cool as Hell..........2007-04-16

Citizen Cope is by far one of the best and most unique artists out right now. His music is some beautiful mixture of about 6 different genres including rock, blues, funk, jazz, and acoustic-driven folk that come together under funky beats, mellow jams and the honest, poetic, enchanting vocals of Clarence Greenwood. The man has this incredible demeanor about him-- he is humble, laid-back and smooth as hell, but his passionate conviction and obvious wisdom let you know immediately that he is someone worth paying every bit of attention to. Cope is this chilled out casual observer who just kind of takes notes on life and the world and then delivers them with so much sincerity and love that you can't help but relate with everything that he says.

Out of the three albums released, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings is my favorite for a number of reasons. First, this was the album that really got me into Cope. There are some incredibly catchy and beautiful songs here. It starts off with "Night Becomes Day," which is really funky and upbeat. It will have you groovin within the first second. This song is followed by another real gem: a funny little story called "Pablo Picasso." "Son's Gonna Rise" and "Bullet and a Target" are probably his best known songs on the album and they are both a total blast. "Son's" is a happy, hopeful, head-bobbing song about determination and redemption and "Bullet" is a big, brilliant social commentary about the hardships of urban poverty told from a totally natural, personal point of view. But, aside from the more mainstream tracks there are gorgeous ballads, such as the mesmerizing "Hurricane Waters" and the slow, jazzy masterpiece "Sideways" performed with Carlos Santana. "My Way Home," "D'Artagnan's Theme," and "Fame" are all deeply emotional pieces about love, loss, acceptance and freedom. "Penitentiary" is a cool, melodic rock song with a great beat and "Deep" is an AMAZING instrumental that ends the album on a floaty, light, carefree vibe.

Another reason that I love this album is because it seems to be the most natural and genuine of all of Cope's work. Everything that he has ever done has been superb, but for some reason this is the album that most people tend to really relate with. It is organic and raw in a totally unique way-- the fluid melodies and hip beats keep it funky and danceable, but the emotional, smart lyrics and crooning vocals give it a stripped-down quality that allow you to open your heart to it in a way that a lot of other hip-hop and rock music does not. I could obviously talk about this music forever. Cope is a special artist who earns an infinite degree of respect from everyone who hears him. His music is perfect for any music lover because he completely defies borders...all that you need to enjoy it is a peaceful, mellow attitude, an open mind, and maybe a nice party substance or two =). Also, if you have a chance to see him live, DO NOT pass it up! Five stars forever.

5 out of 5 stars Verbal Manipulation.......2007-03-18

Track 2 is titled Pablo piccasso. Why? The women he loves is 4o ft tall. in the papers, she doesn't blink, he keeps her by his side & doesn't want the cop to take her into his own hands.
I think he gets quarters from people, because he is a transient.
The last line says "...you a painting.", referring to his audience.
He talks to the painting about the lady he loves. A woman who is a concept and is also represented visually everywhere in NY. She is pretty prominant in Memphis, too.
The guy that CG is portraing here is wacked.
Check out the end of track 1 and let me know if you'll be ready to hold Happiness against your chest, when it's your turn?
The whole cd is like this.
If you are smart, don't read the lyrics!
What is a kid from Tennessee doing with a Dumas' novel? God...

5 out of 5 stars Great Quality.......2007-01-09

This cd came in great condition and in a timely manner. Yes to that!

4 out of 5 stars Very cool sound..........2006-04-08

He has a laid back, almost lazy feel to his delivery. And it works beautifully. I absolutely love the way he blends various genres of music into his sound - blues, hip hop, reggae, rock. There are some negative reviews here due to the appearance of selling out (Pontiac commercial). Don't judge the cd or artist by that. Listen to it a couple of times, then you be the judge.

Highly recommended.

Where has this guy been hiding? I now have 2 of his albums. There isn't a single bad track on the disc. Every song resinates down to your soul.

Like G. Love, Citizen Cope is a musical mixologist, fusing sluggish hip-hop beats with mellow piano melodies and new-school blues with easy-listening pop. On his debut album, Cope--née Clarence Greenwood, former DJ for the rap group Basehead--sounds at times like both a younger, drawling Sting and a folksy Wyclef Jean as he sings over slow, loose, loungy instrumentals. Though his music is a patchwork of breezy styles, Cope's lyrics tackle some serious subjects. "Contact" confronts the hypocrisy of police profiling, while "200,000 (in Counterfeit 50 Dollar Bills)" details the work of a shifty middle-aged hustler. Cope tells stories about crazy women ("Mistaken ID") and lost souls with short fuses ("Appetite (for Lightin' Dynamite)"), and even fantasizes about the musician's fight with the stay pure ("Salvation"), tucking a gritty street realism between the rosy rhythms dancing through these 13 songs. --Jennifer Maerz

4 out of 5 stars citizen cope's 1st album.......2007-07-21

not as good as the clarence greenwood recordings but good to see his evolution as an artist. and still amazing cope as usual.

5 out of 5 stars This man's got SOUL.......2007-05-06

You can search your whole life (as some of us have) and never find music with as much depth and passion as there is here on Cope's first album. This music can and never will get old because like all great things in life, it will become a part of you from the very first second that you hear it. Citizen Cope is a truly unique and magnificent artist who presents his remarkable understandings of the world and the people in it with so much honesty, wisdom and beauty. This album is part narrative, part poetry and there are about 10000 different themes that all meld into a cohesive and unbelievably mellow vibe that will completely capture you.

Some of the songs will have you straight groovin, like the sort of hip-hop/rocker "Let the Drummer Kick," and some, like "Teresa," "Salvation," and "Holdin' On" will seriously make you want to cry because they are just that gorgeous. Not all of the tracks are perfect, but they each hold a little piece of Cope's spirit, which shines through this album like a the big, bright star that he is. I could literally talk about this artist forever, but words are so trite in comparison to the magic of his music. Buy this album, or The Clarence Greenwood recordings...there's no way you will regret it.

5 out of 5 stars refreshing.......2005-10-13

I enjoy pop music as much as the next person. And I enjoy many music styles (From Eminem and Big pun to My chemical romance and Foo fighters.) I heard "Son's gonna rise" in a pontiac commercial and it stuck in my head til it got to the point where I had to find out who sang that song. So after some searching I found out his name and I was happy with the results. He is a change of pace from other acts and whatever "type" of music he makes it sounds good and he has lyrical content behind the the catchy beats and easy, "marbles in the mouth" delivery.

5 out of 5 stars !!! ILL EAT YOUR SOUL.... IF COPE DOESNT GET IT FIRST !!!.......2005-04-26

THIS GUY MAKES ME HAPPY. I PUT IN THIS CD, OR HIS SECOND DISK, AND ITS INSTABLISS. I LOVE EVERY SONG, EVERY PAINFULLY TRUTHFULL LYRIC, AND EVERY BEAUTIFUL MOMENT THIS MAN CREATES ON THIS ALBUM. NEVER SINCE MY FIRST TIME HEARING BLACK SAILS HAVE I CONNECTED TO AN ARTIST AND FELT SO MUCH OF A CD I EXPECTED SO LITTLE FROM. TRUTH BE TOLD, I BOUGHT THIS CD BECAUSE HE LOOKED LIKE A SAMURAI ON THE COVER, BUT BELIEVE ME, THIS GUYS WAY SHARPER AND DEADLY THAN EVEN UMA HERSELF!

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, soulful, authentic music........2004-12-31

When I heard "Sideways" on Santana's "Shaman" CD, I was immediately mesmerized by Greenwood's subtle genius. I picked up a copy of "Cope" and was ecstatic to hear a fresh voice in music - not the same old 'top ten' that commercial radio dishes out. I told everyone who would listen to it to buy it. It is important to purchase the music of new artists, otherwise record companies think no one is interested in their music and won't promote, encourage, or support future recordings. Greenwood is an incredible artist that everyone should hear. His music is poetry. It is visceral and palpable - not to be ignored or dismissed.

Few folks have made sleepy, 420-friendly, white boy rock with quite the pop acumen and skills that Citizen Cope displays here. Cagily smudging the lines between blues, hip-hop, rock and reggae, this former Basehead DJ has the easy, lackadaisical flow of G. Love combined with songs that rival those by Jack Johnson and (at times) Ben Harper. Every Waking Moment is a super smart-sounding refinement of Clarence Greenwood AKA Citizen Cope's work to date. In terms of production alone, it'd not be an overstatement to call this a breakthrough. The accompaniment to "More Than It Seems," for instance, mixes strings, backing vocals, vibes and a melodica, and it sounds perfect. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Reflecting on 2006.......2007-04-29

I think 2006 was one of the worst years in music that I can remember, having said that, this is my favorite album of the year. It is their most consistent disc and although their sound is most certainly distinct, I have yet to grow tired of it. They have recorded very few songs that have not had a long life on my Ipod. Favorite cuts are the title cut, All Dressed Up, Back Together, Somehow,Brother Lee, and More Than It Seems. None of these cuts are as strong as their very best songs (Bullet and a Target, Pablo Picasso , and If there's Love). Their sound is heavily influenced by Reggae, and although I seldom smoke any reefer these days, this is the disc I would most likely listen to when I next decide to get stoned. In a better year this would not be my favorite disc, but I am sure it would be in my top ten. I am surprised these guys are not more popular.

5 out of 5 stars love this!.......2007-04-09

I think i first heard Citizen Cope on the tv show One Tree Hill. It was 'Sideways'The version with Carlos Santana,(check it out-on Santana's album) still my favorite Cope song. I am in LOVE with this guy. And a huge fan of the new cd. I cant remember the last cd i actually bought because i get my music through itunes or whatnot. but i HAd to have this one. I love 'Somehow', and 'Every Waking Moment' and 'All Dressed Up' Citizen Cope is super relaxing, chill music. And somehwat romantic feeling too.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2007-04-01

Clarence Greenwood (Citizen Cope) is amazing! In "Every Waking Moment", he has a varied mix of styles reflected through each song. His voice, as always, is unique. My favorites on this release are,"Friendly Fire" with its disonance,"Brother Lee" with its repetitive, intense lyrics and sound (my favorite!),107 degrees with its sleepy, seductive rhythm and lyrics ... just mesmerizing!,"Somehow" with its easy, lilting melody,is a sweet, love song, and "Left For Dead" really beautiful and soulful! I really like Citizen Cope, seeing him perform live,(awesome experience!) and just listening to his music, lyrics and special voice. I think this release deserves 4 1/2 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-02-05

Citizen Cope is simply perfect as always. The album has many amazing and beautiful songs, like "More than it seems" and "Brother Lee." Brother Lee actually blew me totally away the first time I listened to it, and I still can't get enough. It seems like the song is about my own life... And it compares to Cope's other big hit, "Son's Gonna Rise." Cope is just perfect, that's all I can say.

1 out of 5 stars don't spend the money.......2007-01-12

this citizen cope album is boring, has bad lyrics, and is just plain lousy.

As should be expected, Steely Dan's four-disc box set isn't like all the other rectangular pop-music retrospectives/tombstones. Not for Messrs. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the typically bloated, ego-jacking crate padded out with childhood recordings, suspect cassette demos, and broken-down session takes, annotated by candid snapshots purloined from some distant relative. Nope, this is simply Dan Mach 1's complete oeuvre, from the craft-conscious pop of Can't Buy a Thrill to the jazzy torpor of Gaucho, laid out chronologically and neatly compressed into four discs, with not even a handful of "bonus" cuts (a live recording of "Bodhisattva," a '71 demo of "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" with Flo and Eddie on the side, "Here at the Western World," a Royal Scam outtake, and their obligatory soundtrack cameo, "FM") to color outside the lines. The liner notes are suitably smart, even if they occasionally strain trying to stay astride of B&F's patent sardonicism. For the aspiring Steely Dan completist, a fine place to start. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Citizen Steely Dan: 1972-1980.......2007-05-09

Without doubt the definitive Steely Dan compilation of all time. Their new music notwithstanding, the depth of music included in this boxed set will transport you back to a nostalgic time when things seemd a bit more well defined. Great songs, great players, a great aquistion for all Steely Dan afficiandos!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the novice Dan fan.......2007-01-22

I bought a cassette (!) version of this box set back in 1993 when I was a sophomore in college. It was my introduction to Steely Dan (I was too young to remember them when they were originally recording). And I have to say, this may have been one of the single most important purchases of my life. It forever changed the way I listen to music. More than just turning me into a huge Dan fan, Becker and Fagen's music also paved my entry way into the world of jazz, too. I absolutely love their music.

I've since replaced this box set with the remastered versions of the original albums. But for the novice Dan fan who is looking to learn more, this is a great place to begin. As other reviewers have noted, it's unfortunate that the producers of this set had to rearrange the original album order of some of the songs in order to get everything onto four CDs, but that's a minor quibble. I also thought the enclosed booklet was pretty terrific, too. As I said, when I bought this I knew next to nothing about Steely Dan and with nowhere else to turn for information about the band (remember, I bought this in 1993--before the Web), the book served as a good primer for getting me up to speed on who they were and how they came to be.

Great music. Good value for the price.

5 out of 5 stars 5-Stars? Of course!.......2006-09-18

Five stars is an easy choice here; only in the 1970s could such a group have actually snuck the kinds of things into the charts that they managed to, and somehow prosper and influence others.

I won't rehash the well-explained contents of this box set; instead I'll throw out a few tangential observations. It may not have been quite as obvious at the time, but Steely Dan were one of very, very few successful rock bands to exist apart from really any prevailing movements in the history of rock. One could draw some variably vague connections to jazz, soul, pop, hippie-era rock, California 70s singer-songwriters, or even the kind of ironies that would later fluorish in the best of the post-punk generation (Elvis Costello, XTC, Talking Heads and Pavement were all very much spiritual descendants of Steely Dan, in many ways), but Steely Dan weren't exactly any of those things. But they scrupulously maintained a rather erudite ability to draw selectively from most or all of those things. Music geeks (of the best sort)...that's the expression I'm hunting for.

Becker and Fagen also weren't afraid to really get close to the edge with their sense of irony, or satire: there are any number of songs ("Kid Charlemagne" and "Everything You Did" both spring quickly to mind) aimed at a sort of character who might well be listening to a well-worn copy of 'Royal Scam' whilst the deal goes down, and they also didn't exclude themselves from the critiques, the debaucheries, or the damnations. To be able to do this and actually get away with it is a real indication of brilliance, either as songwriters, or perhaps as social commentators.

In any case, this is great and adventurous music through and through - the textured spaciousness of "Your Gold Teeth I," the cacophonous jazz riffs of "Parker's Band," the keyboard pyrotechnics of "Your Gold Teeth II" (apparently, 2 incomplete snipets of songs rearranged into one complete one), or "Deacon Blues" - a perfect creation, blending a Sinatra-worthy melody with production touches that would rival Pink Floyd (or Radiohead).

Socio-critical sonic architecture at its' finest.

-David Alston

4 out of 5 stars Steely Dan's decade(1970-80)........2006-08-04

This longbox contains their 1st 7 albums & you won't find rarities or early live stuff(see the Skynyrd's box for instance).
However,it remains an exceptional document of the band's musical intelligence.
With the possible exception of Lou Reed, rarely such songwriting ability has been so perfect, some of the songs the duo penned could be printed as novels,it's a brilliant job indeed...
Add the superior musicianship to those songwriting skills & you get STEELY DAN,the most subtle band the USA produced.

All the stuff here deserves a good 5 stars,i gave only 4 because some unedited or unofficial live stuff would have been greatly appreciated!

5 out of 5 stars an incredible collection.......2006-06-07

I have appreciated the music of Steely Dan for many years but unfortunately never owned any of their music. I received Citizen last March as a gift.I was blown away by this material. It is incredible. The selections cross many musical genres and every one is represented first class. Anyone who appreciates quality music needs to have this 4 CD set in their collection. 3 out of 5 stars No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31

Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.

As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.

5 out of 5 stars I would call some of these pieces "newage"..........2006-08-02

Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!

5 out of 5 stars Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13

Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.

This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.

If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.

5 out of 5 stars ENNIO MORRICONE - FILM MUSIC, VOL. 1 .......2005-08-16

HAVING HEARD EXERPTS OF THE MUSIC BEFORE, IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I
WANTED.

5 out of 5 stars A collection of Morricone's most popular and entertaining.......2005-07-31

Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.

5 out of 5 stars Citizen: Army of Me.......2007-06-05

I first saw this band perform in Toronto when they opend for Blue October and I was so impressed with their music I bought the earlier "Rise" CD at the concert.

This CD is a continuation of the songs on "Rise" and a perfection of them. "Perfect" leads off the album and so far is my favorite song, but truthfully there is not a bad song on the CD. Eminently listen-able!
BUY IT!!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, thoughtful rock.......2007-05-11

Vince Scheuerman's thoughtful, insightful lyrics, bold, honest voice (reminiscent of John Lennon's), and engaging melodies shine front and center in the varied tracks of "Citizen." Combined with Brad Tursi's brilliance and eclecticism on lead guitar, Dennis Manuel's snappy, energetic drumming that gives full play to the lyrical possibilities of cymbals, celestial vocal harmonies, and the lush warm bass carpet under all (currently provided by Conrado Bokoles who is not on this album), the net result is a magical uplifting beauty.

One might hear a variety of possible influences, but at the end of the day what comes through is a strong original confident collective voice that might get through to you more than you thought it would at first, as happened to me. Did not expect to become emotionally attached to Citizen but I have! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Its good to listen to an entire album before you review it.......2007-03-25

Great album if your a fan of either or both of these bands. More original material than on most splits. I think the Citizen Fish side of the disk may be a bit better but that could be my Subhumans bias kicking in haha. In short tho great album. O and really don't listen to the person who reviewed this before me they admitted themselves they haven't even listened to the Citizen Fish half of the album. I mean if you just wanted the LOC songs why wouldn't you just download them, I mean Stza ENCOURAGES that.

3 out of 5 stars The worst I've seen from LoC.......2007-03-07

I don't really know what went wrong. F*ck World Trade was a great album, but honestly. How can they go from that, to this? FWT was different from Mediocre Generica, but you could still tell that it was the good Leftover Crack. But here, only a little bit of Baby Punchers, and Life Causes Cancer(which btw, sounds like a Choking Victim song gone bad) remind me that I am listening to Leftover Crack. Stza's and even Ezra's voices sound different than last time around. Change isn't always bad, but I was just not a fan of this change.
8.LoC Intro
This was pretty funny.
9.Baby Punchers
4/5 The original version was better, mainly since this version is greatly raped by the bridge.
10.Genocidal Tendancies
4/5 Sounds nothing like a Leftover Crack song, but it's still pretty good.
11....And Out Comes the N-Bomb!
4/5 This is pretty good. One of the higher points of the album actually.
12.Life Causes Cancer
1/5 Ugh....I just don't wanna talk about it. CV song gone bad, like I said before.
13.World War 4
4.5/5 I really want to give this a 5, but it is completely RAPED by the chorus. Everything else is absolute perfection, but the chorus is just terrible.
14.Supermarket Song
2/5 I think this is a Citizen Fish cover, or a Subhumans cover. Well, I haveen't heard the original, but this stands out in about, no way.
15.Reason For Existance
3.5/5 This is the other CF or SH cover, I think. It's better than the last song, but still aint that great. There are some great parts, but for the most part, it is a "meh" song. No real melody or anything.

Okay, people have been totally whining to me about how this review is "garbage" because I couldn't listen to the Citizen Fish side of the split. Well, to stop these idiots from causing me more trouble, I did listen to the Citizen Fish side of the split. I'll just say that it was alot better than Leftover Crack's disappointment.
There, happy now?! Leave me alone now please.

This is probably going to be the final Leftover Crack album. Well, I just wish the went out with a bang, but I guess not all bands can do that.

I love Sakamoto's voice and David Sylvian is so tremendously talented. I highly recommend this cd. It's wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Single; Better CD.......2004-08-11

I'm going to go so far as to say that "Chasm" is Ryuichi Sakamoto's best solo album to date - and one of the best techno (for lack of a better word)albums in 20 years. It's classic Sakamoto, gorgeous, brilliantly constructed - song after song after song. And there are 16 songs here - no filler. I had heard rumors that Ryuichi would not make another 'popular' CD such as this - that he would focus only on soundtrack music and the sort of BTTB and Morelenbaum instrumentals, which is all good. But this is something else - wonderful, amazing, etc etc etc.

5 out of 5 stars Slaine's Back!.......2007-07-25

Slaine didn't really make a name for himself untill this year. I only know a few people out in my area who knew who he was untill La Coka Nostra blew up. So if you don't know who Slaine is, check this cd out, he's awesome. If anything I'd say he sounds like a cross between Jedi Mind Tricks and Esoteric. He has that sick underground hate style, mixed with good lyrics and wordplay. This CD has a couple songs I would skip but everything else is stuff I'd bump before a robbery. That's a good thing. Check this cd out, "White Man Is The Devil Vol. 1" is even better than this. He is deffinently worth checking out. Also his group "Special Teamz" is something worth peeping.
