DJ DB, the founder of Breakbeat Science (the first all-jungle record store in America) is a big proponent of accessible jungle. On this mix CD for his own F1-11 label, you can hear DB's attempt to push jungle up from the underground. Straying from the more popular and purist hard-edged "tech step" styles, DB mixes in tracks with vocals, some jump-up (definitely considered not cool by junglists), and even--gasp--melody. Don't think this means there's a lot of fluff. From the dark, moody opener, Exocet's "Demon Seed," to the tough beats of Krust's dynamite hit "Warhead" from 1998, this is jungle at its best--with all genres sharing center stage and mixed with flawless precision. --Tricia Romano

IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY, CHECK THIS CD OUT!.......2004-05-05
I borrowed it from a friend at work.
First, let me say most of my DnB experience was with AK1200, Dara, and Dieselboy. Those 3 rock, and I will always have mad respect for them. But a couple of years ago, I heard some of a DJ DB mix, and have been really stoked about any chance to hear his mixes ever since. There was something a bit different about his style, and it hit hard.
So, I listened to this cd now (in the year 2004, the cd was released in 1999) and was very impressed. The first song, Demon Seed, has more depth and emotion for me, than I think I've ever heard in Drum and Bass music. I love it. The cd them mixes well into various groovy and hard hitting tracks, many of which I have heard before in some form, and all of which are sweet to listen to. Then, the last track came on, The Process mix of Rob and Goldie's "The Shadow". This track is so sick I almost puked on myself like 8 times just listening to it. I mean Black Plague sick. We're talking so sick, it makes AIDS look like the common cold.
Anyway, I debated on giving the cd 4 or 5 stars. Since for the most part I didn't find the style completely original, and b/c I had heard several of the songs before, I thought about giving the cd 4 stars. However, seeing as how this cd came out 5 years ago, before I even listened to DnB, I think it's fair to say this cd must have been ahead of its time. And the last track... there's no denying the force of that track. 5 stars. spoken.
