INCredible Sound of Drum'n'Bass

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
While Goldie is not the best DJ in the world, he is a decent "selecta," as the Jamaicans might say. For INCredible Sound of Drum & Bass the notorious head of the Metalheadz label reaches back into jungle's catalog, pulling out the classics--ironically, only four or five years old--and combining them with newer tunes. Tracks such as Doc Scott's "Here Come the Drums" and "Warning" by Codename John (a.k.a. Grooverider) are essential for any jungle aficionado, and both appear here. Careful not to neglect the new stuff, the man with the mouth full of gold teeth does not pick the trendy big-blazers, but rather more sophisticated, fine-tuned, streamlined records that work well with the airy atmospherics of the older singles. Johnny L's techno-stabber "See Red" mixes with Doc Scott's "Unofficial Ghost," while producers like Matrix and Fresh and Vegas make appearances, side by side with Source Direct and Shy FX. This is not a mind-blowing affair, but it is--as the U.K. jocks say--proper. --Tricia Romano

3 out of 5 stars Caution: American Release NOT complete........2006-07-26

The UK version of this double CD set not only has more tracks on it (Including "Digital" with KRS-One which for some odd reason was left out of this version, along with some other choice cuts) but also comes with a booklet. I was looking to buy a replacement; unfortunately, the one for sale here is NOT the same as the import version.

5 out of 5 stars favorite by far.......2006-04-10

My fav Goldie cut, here come the drums is just awesome and then how it mixes into the next track is superb, the second cd is great too, Honestly the first and second cds are equal in my book, this is foundation for the rest of his music to come, very good, very good.....

5 out of 5 stars Classics.......2006-03-23

These are some of the pivotal, classic pieces of early drum and bass from late 1992 - 1993!

Plus a bunch of other classics from the mid to late '90s.

The people who rate drum & bass but rate this 1 star really need to get to know the genre properly.

Oh yeah, some of the tracks sound different to what is getting played now. once you appreciate the fact some of the production is relatively lo-fi (a combination of the music being so, so underground and home-made back then, and the fact dance music production, especially with regards to sampling, is so much moree advanced and easy-to-use now), you will see that the ideas, the programming (especially in the beats and rhythms) and the raw vibe is original D&B at the fullest and most advanced. It's like 90% Irish Poteen, compared with a 4% Coors Light of today's scene. Weaker junglist stomachs may fold under pressure.

(Actually, I played 'Here Comes The Drumz' and 'Terminator' to an American girl at my uni in 1998 - alledgedly a d&b fan - telling her this was the roots of the sound and she flat out denied that they were d&b tracks at all! Also played her a JJ Frost mix from early '93 which got the same response. I gave up in the end, such was the force of her 'considered opinion'. Just goes to show, ha ha ha.)

5 out of 5 stars A trend setter.......2006-03-11

The people who are rating this album as being 1 star are rating it years and years after it was released. I bought this album when it first came out - it's what made me get into drum'n'bass music, and having done that it significantly changed my musical tastes for the rest of my life.

It's old school drum'n'bass, not the fancier faster new tracks that you might be used to. Having said that, it's classic, classic dark drum'n'bass for those who want to see what d'n'b was like when it was on the verge of its surge in popularity.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst mixes I've ever heard.......2006-01-16

This never should've been pressed. They should've taken the mix and thrown it out. DO NOT BUY!!!

4 out of 5 stars A very Solid 2-Cd Collection from The "INCredible" label...........2004-02-14

Amongst Garage's most respected Dj's/Producers, compile a mix album for the "INCredible" label.....having been considered among the best producers of garage music, their track selection is just magnificent.....the sublime "Sorry (I Didn't Know) " by 'Monsta Boy / Denzie', rubs shoulders with tracks such as 'Destiny Child's', "Say My Name", and well as Recognised chart successes such as `Artful Dodger's`, "Woman Trouble" & `Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman", but the piece de resistance, undoubtedly has to be `Davis, Roy Jr's' genre-bending "Gabriel", that is as far more than a limited Garage music Comparison....with the delicate soul sung chorus, lifting the song to unimaginable heights. This mix isn't just limited to generic 2-step either, there are several remixed versions from other genres of music, such as `Leviticus' ` D'n'b / breakbeat classic "The burial" & soul Diva `Angie Stone's' "No More Rain (In This Cloud)", reworked to add a touch of diversification is this fantastic effort from The Dreem Team.

2 out of 5 stars So SO SO.......2000-10-05

INCredible take on the Dreem Teem group to do a compilation. The problem with INCredible comps are they are never mixed, and this is no exception.

Side One, the boys give u all the newest 2 step commercial hits. Everythin from Wookie to Craig David ... with tones of Dreem teem and Artful Dodgers mixs to go around. However, there are just too many songs that sound the same, after awhile you just get tired of that constant R&B vocal and crave for a change. The beats are what attract me to the 2 step, however i found that the vocals on this compilation often over power the beat. There also lacks enough MCing and dark tracks to make this a tru album for the selectas!

Side Two. A blast from the past! Mikee, Timmie, and DJ Spoony pick their favorite influential garage tracks from the past. I , personally , think tha the album is strong because of the different types of songs found on this side. You got the Gap Band, Crystal Waters, Jodeci, Roy Davis Jr. Also you find some early jungle and house tracks, such as a early Jeff Mills tune done under "True Faith".

Based on the strength of the second disc, i gave this album a 3 out of 5. If you want a good 2 step album then try "Twice As Nice IN Ayia Nap" mixed by DJ Spoony, the album has everything for everyone and is probably the best 2 step mix album i came across. As for this album, i am probably gonna just listen to the second disc and throw the other disc in a pile of cds that i dont listen to.

I have to say that if you like excellent darkness of Drum 'N' Bass mixed with Tech-step than you are tuning to the right track. Goldie savagely tears 1200s a part in very creative way.
