4 out of 5 stars solid return to form, great summer CD!.......2007-06-12

I had just about given up on HRC (despite being very good friends with Casey Prestwood, and having shot the cover to the band's third album)...but having been released from the suffocating grip of Vagrant, they have put out a CD that capitalizes on the promise of their first two efforts.

Andy proves himself an excellent producer, and together with a new label, the band finally tries something different (not a possibility with Vagrant). The results are refreshing, especially for Casey, one of the great guitarists playing today. (Name an emo band that hasn't stolen his riffs!) From the violin on Vampire, to the pop sensibilities of US Royalty, to Casey's slide guitar on the bonus track, this is not your whining little emo sister's HRC, and that's a good thing. In fact, with the exception of a few tracks, emo is hardly an appropriate tag. (A GREAT thing!)

This is a great rock album, with a number of tunes that will stand the test of time. (Ventricle is one of the band's best songs ever.)

To put it simply: there's a new Wilco album...I played it twice, then popped THE UNDERGROUND IS A DYING BREED (nice ode to the Archers, guys!) right back into my Jeep's player.

This is MY summer '07 CD!

Welcome back guys!

4 out of 5 stars excellent cd.......2007-05-07

now i have to admit right off that my only experience with HRC prior to this cd was seeing them live before i knew any of their music and then later on listening to "if its cool with you...". and when i saw them live i thought they were pretty generic and boring...

having said that... i've decided to check out this cd and i think its great! i can't stop listening to it. the songs seem to flow well together. i feel like its not that often anymore that you can get this kind of music without the whole kid appeal of trying to fit some kind of image. this cd is definately better than "if its cool with you.."

the cd starts out stong right away with "stateside" and ends with an awesome country-ish sing-song thats bound to get stuck in your head.

i highly recommend this cd.

4 out of 5 stars 9th+Phonte+Big Pooh=Real Hip Hop!.......2007-07-07

After listening to "The Listening" I didnt think they could get any better, so when i bought this mixtape i was expecting the samething. It came to my surprise that these guys can and did improve on greatness! Between Phonte and Pooh, Phonte Stills the show with his witty, and "make you think" bars. That statement maybe true but like Pooh's album people tend to sleep on him. He made me believe him in the album opener "War" and crushed Joe Scudda in the second track "
Third Party" . All together the lyrics are excellent! 9th wonder comes through and shines as he always does on the production, which always compliments Pooh's and Phonte's flow! Great album and should be in your collection of hip hop.

I passed this cd up so many times. Thinkin it was just another mix tape. But I was surprised. Its formated like an album. Pooh steped his game UP. More than the listening. Hell, he's better on this than the minstrel show. And phonte........ this solitified his place in hip hops top lyrical artist. Nicolay and 9th wonder do their thang. After hearing ther nicolay remix I went back and bought foreign exchange. The connected album. I dunno what else to say about it except its greatness

5 out of 5 stars little brother.......2007-02-21

If you are a true hip-hop fan who's craving for some underground style, then The Chittlin Circuit is for you. Liked most of the songs, no water- downed cookie cutter commercialized music here. Hip hop at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Known Unknown.......2006-08-17

Hip Hop ain't fun no more...

In an era where "Laffy Taffy" is a number one rap song (what the f*ck), and riding on regular sized rims and tires is damn near obsolete, North Carolina's own Little Brother comes back to toss in their bid as one of hip hop's best kept secrets.

From their lyrics on Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor II", to the Okayplayer compilation, and most recently on The Minstrel Show" and "Seperate but Equal" with DJ Drama, LB has been putting in work. The Chittlin Circuit 1.5 is definitely a must have for anyone considers themselves a fan of good hip hop music. I am an LB fan to the dirt, but I did what a lot of true fans did, I bought the albums out of sequence. Fortunately with this group, it doesn't really matter, as all the material is sick. To me, the standout track on this album is "The Beginning". Yeah, the legend Big Daddy Kane is on the album, "Welcome to Durham" but I didnt cop the album to hear him on it. Illmind kills the sample and the drums on this joint, Pooh and Tay high step on the joint, and songstress Yazarah peppers the track with her soulful vocals. Perfect mix of samples, rhymes, and vocals. Young Guru switches his engineer hat for an excellent fitting producer brim on "Ladies Jam". Another excellent use of a warped voice sample in the background as Phontigga and Rapper Pooh parallel park on the track as only the greatest can do. This is actually the last LB offering I purchased (except for Seperate But Equal), but it is definitely a must have. 9th Wonder and Khrysis are musical marvels, placing their head-nodding rythms ever so gracfully under Pooh and Tay's vocals. Perfect marriage of Beats and Rhymes.

****As a sidenote, go get "Seperate But Equal", "The Minstrel Show", "Connected" (Phonte and Dutch producer Nicolay) "Triple Play" (Pooh, and Justus League Members L.E.G.A.C.Y and The Away Team) and for you futhermuckers that think you can rhyme, get the 9th Wonder instrumental tape series.****

4 out of 5 stars Great way to prime the pallet for The Minstrel Show (4.5 stars).......2006-08-07

LB seems to be here for the long haul with their pre-sophmore effort "The Chittlin Circuit 1.5". As always Phonte delivers slick metaphors and wordplay. Rapper Big pooh seems to bring more to the table lyrically this time around and and as always 9th Wonder's production is a breath of fresh air. This album follows the formula presented by Phonte "Dope beats, dope rhymes". The Chittlin Circuit showcases other talent within the Justus League to include Krhysis, Nicolay (Producer of the Foreign Exchange)and many others. The album consists of several new tracks and 3 remixes from LB's 1st album. Any fan of LB should definitely add this to their LB collection.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars what happened?.......2004-04-14

I bought this cd when it first came out as a huge HRC fan. Vagrant records also has a quality track record judging from their band roster and their ability to somehow summon up the best of a band. I thought HRC would benefit from much higher production quality as well as the influence of oustanding acts such the Alkaline Trio and Saves the Day surrounding them.. However, owning for the cd for nearly two years with many listens has made realize that the band used to create captiving, listenable hardcore is gone. Nothing about this cd particularly interesting or grabbed me even on the first listen. The disc loses its appeal early as nameless, medtempo pop crowds the speakers. The vocals are more clear, however; the trade off is less compelling melodies and a lack of creativity. Tracks like "the Pharmacist" identify a theme of short, competent, but boring songs. I haven't heard anything more form HRC released this album and I don't think i would shell out 15 bucks again for something I would hear on the radio.

4 out of 5 stars not bad, not bad.......2003-11-15

when i talked to the drummer (Mike) shortly before the release he told me they stripped down to a more rock sound. This release is a tad too poppy for my taste, but they don't stray too far from where they started. Guitar work isn't as unique as in previous releases, so if you're a fan of more harder emotional songs, id recommend one of their Triple Crown releases.

4 out of 5 stars unique for this genre........2003-10-14

i acquired this cd last summer when i mistakenly borrowed it from a friend. i put it in my discman anyway, and wow -- am i ever glad i did! too meaty and technical to be labeled 'emo', and not quite commercial or superficial enough to be called 'pop', this record builds some bridges between the two without alienating either.

some of the hooks are infectious beyond belief, and some of the content is far more deep than you would expect a vagrant artist to ever record. this is a great disc, and certainly one of the most pleasant surprises of 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Africans, keep your culture!.......2000-05-04

I love Oumou Sangare. In her voice there is all the deep charm, the fresh sensuality, the strong soul of african women.

This is the second beautiful Oumou's CD. Like other, it's pure African music, using the Wassoulou's penta-tonal scale, hypnotical, polirithmical. The texts reflect African culture. Saa Magni, for example, speaks about death. Death is very close to life, and this track sings like a love song. The Nick Gold's production is simpy superb. Africans can be proud of their culture.

I find this one of the best albums ever produced. It is a shame to not have it in stock.

I liked the majority of music in the movie but I bought the soundtrack because I specifically wanted the music from the scene of the final white party towards the end of the movie (the part where Hector is with Bobby and many people at the party are overdosing). Does anyone know where I can find that?

4 out of 5 stars If you liked the music in the movie...here you go........2005-04-29

This isn't one of those soundtracks that you swear they picked a bunch of random songs and slapped them together thinking you wouldn't notice. If you're a fan of the movie and/or just the music in the movie, you won't be disappointed.

There's something here for just about anybody, and this has kept me entertained during a lot of trips to and from work. I recommend it both as worthy individual tracks and as a collection that's worth owning. "High" is my favorite track. It does not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD but Oddly not Mixed!.......2004-02-29

This is a great CD, the songs are fun and danceable...but the damn thing isn't a continuous mix! Given its genesis from the movie, Circuit, this is somewhat beyond bizarre. Fortunately its relatively easy to rip it, remix it and burn it yourself...so I guess its also a course in becoming a DJ...

When I went to see the Circuit movie, I was blown away by the music I heard and immediately went searching for the soundtrack. The new Taylor Dayne song "How Many" is fantastic with a great dance vibe. I also thought the remake of "White Rabbit" was a standout track. There is so much on this CD that needs to be recognized, but the best thing would be to pick one up and see for yourself.

On the full-length follow-up to his critically acclaimed "The Baby And The Satellite" EP, Hinson offers a substantiated account of misery and triumph, evoking translucent memories and physical struggle. During an ironically twisted period of heavy medication and pain brought on by recent back surgery, this release is the product of rallying above physical torment, facing proverbial closeted skeletons, and discovering eventual resolution through the power of euphoric connection. A veritable reminder that progress through pain can be intimate, heartfelt, and epically necessary. For fans of Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Silver Jews, Smog.

This album is great. An excellent range of music that truly showcases his talent as a musician and his songwriting abilities.

      5 out of 5 stars a real treasure.......2007-04-23

I first heard of Hinson when the local college radio station played a couple songs from the Opera Circuit. I haven't been so impressed in a long time. I picked the album up a couple days ago and am absolutly in love with it. Great lyrics and use of instruments that are seldom combined in one style. So few people use the underrated sound of the banjo and Hinson uses it to great effect along with cello, violins and horns. Hinson's voice is another great standout, sort of a softer version of Tom Waits. If you're looking to get drunk and pine over lost loves, this is the album you want to be listening to. I highly recommend picking up this album before Hinson becomes another name brand. Hopefully he won't.

5 out of 5 stars An Ablolute Gem From An Amazing Songwriter!.......2006-10-21

I originally saw Micah when he opened for David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) a few months ago, and he was amazing. In fact, I saw him do the sound check before the show started, and talked to him a bit about music and everything (really great guy). From there on, I've been a fan of his, he just keeps getting a whole lot better with every record (you should get his other records, too). "...and the Opera Circut" is an absolutely amazing record. The added arangments suit his songs and voice perfectly, they don't overwhelm and/or distract. My favorite songs from the record are is the beatutiful granduar of "Jackeyed", the lush, lively "Diggin A Grave" and the intimate "Drift Off To Sleep". This record is an absolute gem, just do yourself a favor and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Best new Bluegrass Band in 30 years.......2007-04-10

What a great debut album from another Charlie Waller spinoff group. Charlie would be proud of these new country gentlemen. Good quality musicians, great arrangements and excellent vocals. Good writing as well. The complete package. These guys should do well for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Great bluegrass album.......2007-03-31

One of the finest bluegrass albums of the last few years. Featuring several former members of the late, great Country Gentlemen, this top-flight quintet ably carries the torch for the "progressive" bluegrass camp. They sing melodic songs with heart and feeling, and beautiful, understated harmonies. Nice picking, too, but it doesn't take over the whole show, or make this feel like yet another hotshot superpicker album. I really liked this album!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, contemporary bluegrass w/ calibrated vocals & intelligent instrumental interaction.......2007-02-20

Playing Time - 45:00 -- The Circuit Riders' "Let the Ride Begin" is a strong debut album that earns accolades for a smooth, contemporary approach to bluegrass. Presumably adopting a band name to reflect the lifestyle of a working band, the quintet from North Carolina can impart an exhilarating gallop to Neil Young's "Powderfinger" or a slow cantor to yet another contribution from the prolific songwriting team of Dixie and Tom T. Hall, "Mama What Does Heaven Look Like There?" About a traveling musician, "Colder and Colder" is a beautiful song but seems to slightly challenge singer Greg Luck's low vocal range on the verses. Overall, the band's vocals are burnished and calibrated, and their instrumental interaction provides a model of competence and intelligence.

As a band, The Circuit Riders evolved from former members of the last version of The Country Gentlemen with Charlie Waller prior to his passing. While Randy Waller has reorganized The Country Gentlemen, former members Greg Corbett (banjo), Darin Aldridge (mandolin), and Billy Gee (bass) formed The Circuit Riders with Greg Luck (guitar) and Jaret Carter (resophonic guitar). Luck wrote "Lonesome Wind" and "The Fall" for this album. Aldridge penned "Seeds of Doubt" and "Ten Years." Lead vocalists are mainly sung by Luck or Aldridge, but Carter delivers them on "Take Me Back to Old Kentucky." Carter's "Pickett's Charge" is a smoldering instrumental inspired by a famous Civil War battle. Another classic instrumental, "Foggy Mountain Special," clearly shows that Corbett has cut his teeth on the picking of Earl Scruggs, and he also shows that he has mastered the technique for rolling triplets too.

Greg Luck has played with such groups as Redwing, Lost & Found, Bass Mountain Boys, Lynn Morris Band, Bluegrass Cardinals, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and IIIrd Tyme Out. Not just a solid guitarist, he contributes some elegant fiddling on two cuts on this project, "Mama What Does Heaven Look Like There?" and "Pickett's Charge." After playing with his family band and New Vintage, North Carolinian Greg Corbett spent 13 years as a Country Gentleman. In 1996, he took home the SPBGMA Banjo Player of the Year award. Darin Aldridge has experience playing music in various genres (country, jazz, folk, rock) and was with The Country Gentlemen for seven years. Listen to how he embellishes Luck's "The Fall" with bouzouki and mandola. Darin has also released a solo album, "Call It A Day" on the Pinecastle label. Jaret Carter also has experience playing country-rock, jazz and blues, and he gives about 50 private music lessons each week. Billy Gee was born and raised in La Plata, Md. but currently lives in North Carolina where he operates a guitar repair business. On this album, Wes Powers plays percussion on two cuts. "Let the Ride Begin" is a very convincing entree from The Circuit Riders. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars I've Said it Once, I'll Say It Again...........2001-10-16

...this is what they are really playing in those little blues joints and roadhouse party spots here in the Good ol' USA.

It looks as if Rhino has another good idea for several volumed compilation, ie, like the In Yo Face funk compilation. Let's hope this ain't the last of this houseblues soul music.

I could say that this misses good ol' blues shack standards like
Aretha Franklin's "Dr. Feelgood", Denise Lasalle's/ZZ Hill's "Down Home Blues" and the flip side of the Clarence Carter cut that IS included here--"Love Me With A Feeling" and Bobby Blue Bland's "Stormy Monday", but with what's included here, I can't complain. Bobby's "Member's Only", Marvin Sease's "Stuck in the Middle","Walking the Backstreets and Cryin'", "Woman to Woman" and Latimore's "Let's Straighten it Out" and more...a perfect blues rocking CD. Thanks, Rhino.
