Old School Vs. New School

Editorial Reviews

Everyone and his cousin has done, or been the subject of, a remix record at this point, so it takes something special for one to stand out from the crowd. Old School Vs. New School qualifies--emphatically. A celebration of some of the Jive and Silvertone labels' best singles, it pits killer tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Kool Moe Dee, Boogie Down Productions, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Whodini, and the Stone Roses against the talents of Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim), Doc Martin, Rabbit in the Moon, Aphrodite, and other well-known--and talented--remixers. With the exception of Hollis Monroe's take on R. Kelly's "Sex Me"--easily the weakest track on the album, both in its original and remixed form--all of the songs are somehow treated with respect and given a fresh life. Cook's take on A Tribe Called Quest's "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" gives the track a tropical feel, the Bassbin Twins give their take on BDP's catalog in a tribute medley, and the two takes of the Stone Roses' classic "Fools Gold"--from Grooverider and Rabbit in the Moon--bring out two different sides of a deserving song. You'll want to dig out the originals again and listen to them side by side with the remixes. --Randy Silver

2 out of 5 stars Dearly dissappointed..........2000-07-03

After hearing a few tracks from the second volume I thought the first one would be even better... Yet I was extremely dissappointed when I heard the album... If you like old 80's hip-hop with boring, weak techno beats then this is the album you have been waiting for...

4 out of 5 stars A Great Remix Compilation.......2000-03-19

I was looking for a breakbeat compilation and found this. A few tracks have some sweet breakbeats, but there's so much more funk that can't be contained by just one musical subgenre. These new school remixes have taken these already great tracks and transformed them. There are a couple tracks on the CD that don't quite slide with me, but the majority are awesome. Whodini vs The Freestylers, A Tribe Called Quest vs Aphrodite, and A Tribe Called Quest vs Norman Cook especially are otherwordly and deserve to be cranked up on everyone's stereo system.

5 out of 5 stars Studder scratch, studder scratch filling up the beats.......1999-05-13

Yummy scratch tracks laying down fat fast pistol oomph. If you funk the vibe, ya know that the skunk is tribe. A burning blend of aboriginal harmonies in accordance with section 12 of the Funk Nation Treaty. Fat Boy Slim brings pounds of carpet to the already cantonese tribe tune.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive mixes.......1999-04-24

Even though I'm getting sick of techno compilations, this one didn't disapoint. The remixes are fresh and original. All the Tribe remixes are incredible, especially the Aphrodite and Fat Boy Slim mixes. A great mix of house, break beat and trance versions of some classic music. But R Kelly? Why?

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS DOPE!!!! BUY IT!!!!.......1999-03-17

This is on of the best CD compilations to come out in a while. This brings back to the limelight two of my all time favorite groups, ATCQ and the Stone Roses. The first time I heard the mix of "Can I Kick It" it got me so movin I brought the house down, serious. BUY THIS CD!!!

4 out of 5 stars !!! DAMN GOOD !!!.......2005-06-03

THIS CD BLAZES! I BOUGHT IT FOR 2 BUCKS BRAND NEW, AND DAMN, ITS HOT! THE FU SHNICKENS REMIX'S ARE AMAZING! EVERY SONG IS PUT TO A RIPPIN BEAT, THAT GIVES THE SONG A WHOLE NEW FEEL. THE ARTISTS INCLUDED ARE GREAT, INCLUDING TRIBE, FU, KRS ONE, AND EVEN THE KID ROCK SONG ROCKS. IF YOU INTO JUNGLE OR DRUM AND BASS, PICK DIS ONE UP IMMEDIATELY!

5 out of 5 stars this album is fantastic.......2000-06-21

This album combines the great beats of new school rap with the great lyrics and soul of old school. this album is entirely worth listening to if you enjoy a great beat and some fast lyrics. this album should be listened to by everyone!

3 out of 5 stars Better than before but...........2000-06-21

not yet perfected, Vol2 is slightly better than its predeccesor due to what sounds like extra studio time and effort but unfortunately compilations like these reinforce the idea that oldschool techniques blend poorly with newschool beats and rhythms, especially of the electronic nature. Noteworthy tracks include Tribe vs Propellerheads' Electric Relaxation (but the original is sooooo much more relaxing)...Fu-schnickens vs Pimp Juice's Ring the Alarm (dope, very)...and Groove Armada's coolass remix of Tribe's Description of a Fool (although you can find other coolcoolass remixes of this song everywhere if you look hard enough). If you do like the marriage of quasi-electronic+hiphop, Timbaland seems to be doing nice work (eg Aalliyah's "try again" is pure digital), Dre is on top as demonstarted by both he and Slim's new joints, and surprisingly Juvenille. Again, it is difficult to impossible to effectively blend these two genres without compromising the strength of one for the other. If you're looking for Tribe remixes there's always the UK import "Revised Quest for the Seasoned Traveller", tons of import singles, the extra cd on The Love Movement, and finally the previous New School vs Old which I thought actually had better Tribe tracks than this one.

    2 out of 5 stars A comparison...but why?.......2001-07-05

Old school dub and new school dub are two indisputably different things; however, this sampler not only juxtaposes the two but mixes them to a certain extent as well. New school dub lovers will enjoy the subtle 'new school' overhauls of esp. Black Uhuru's or Burning Spear's tracks on the album's first half whereas they may be somewhat disappointed by the album's second half, which is characterized by spun-out, more or less uneventful new school artists' dubs. The producers would have done well to include some more divergent modern dub bands; apart from the inevitable Mad Professor and the vintage 'rastafari' by Alpha&Omega, the new school half is just a bit too monotonous. Most dub fans will either like the first or the second part; nevertheless this album is a nice, albeit superfluous attempt at comparing two eras of dub. For a clearer picture you'd be better off buying yourself two separate CD's with some classic dubs both from the 70s and from the 90s.

I actually got this album for free when I subscribed to the local (LA) npr station, and although it's something I would never have found on my own, it's one of my favorite albums. There are a few weak points (the Stone Roses remixes don't belong at all), but the middle of the album and the Tribe Called Qwest songs more than make up for it. Having the electronic remixes really adds to the momentum of the songs. I always thought KRS-One was great, but the remix on this album really elevates the music to be on par with his rapping. A good mix of party rap and social commentary keeps the album unpredictable and fun.
