5 out of 5 stars I like it Spooky!.......2007-07-22

this soundtrack is just as awesome as the movie. i especially love "make love til we die". if you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars BRAAAAIIIIINS!!!!!!.......2007-07-03

Oh my lord, I watch this movie once a week. It's so bad!!!!! I am so in love though. I love the cheese factor, it is by far my favorite 80's horror movie. The make-up is so weak, but there's 3 awesome looking zombies in it. You'll laugh a lot, I promise. The acting is just as horrible as the zombie make-up. The special effects will make your bladder bust from laughing so hard. Yay, I think I'll go watch it now.

4 out of 5 stars Classic funny scary movie.......2007-06-27

You can nearly anticipate everything happening in this movie, but its still a good one to see. The makeup and effects are no where near as good as they are today, but still this is one worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-17

This is definitely among the best five horror films made in the 80's. It isn't really the best at anything: there are certainly movies with more gore, more scares, more comedy, even more nudity. But this film pulls everything together very well, has ample gore, scares, etc., and most importantly produces a very good atmosphere for everything to happen in. From beginning to end, the atmosphere and sets of this movie are great for the horror genre, and the tension keeps building throughout the movie. (though Tarman--played by Allan Trautman--was certainly a very high point in the middle).

I never really bought Matthews and Randolph (Freddy and Tina) as people that would hang out with punk-loving... well... punks. But apart from that small issue, the characters are great. Gulager, Calfa, and Karen, (Burt, Ernie, Frank) all give mature, straight performances, which provides a great foundation for the horror elements to be built on. The other actors also fill their rules well--not that there are deep character explorations here, but the characters are certainly good for a horror flick. Quigley and Venturini (Trash and Suicide) in particular come across well, though I think the whole cast holds it own well enough. Maybe two exceptions would be Terry (the Colonel) and his wife, whose performances I thought were lacking, though they were both very short.

This film had a lot of memorable lines, and a lot of memorable gags, as well. The split dog, the pickaxe to the back of the head, the captured female zombie, the request for more paramedics... lots of stuff here that is not just good, but also memorable. O'Bannon also enjoyed cramming scenes with all sorts of stuff in the background, to make the scenes at once more believable and more interesting. Some of the jokes in the film are also sort of comical, like having two friends named Burt and Ernie in a horror film (and one is a mortician).

Definitely a movie that any horror fan should see. And even if you don't really like horror films, you still might want to give it a shot.

4 out of 5 stars DVD transfer isn't that accurate.......2007-06-15

Now the movie itself deserves 5 stars and maybe more. But the dvd transfer is disappointing for those who know this movie like the back of their hand. I saw this movie at least 300 times in my life. And as soon as I watched this on dvd I noticed some differences in the soundtrack. Some songs were cut short or they played late. And a couple of the voices for the zombies were straight up changed. Now its impossible to list the changes without blowing the movie experiance for those who never seen this. So I won't touch it. If you never seen this before, then you won't notice anything and this could either be the best zombie movie you ever seen, or the worst.

Now for the review of the movie itself. This takes place in the 80's and you'll notice it quick. A company accidently got a shipment of containers consisiting of dead bodies and chemicals. Two workers accidently break one of the canisters and all he11 breaks loose. A small little graveyard party for a few teenagers turns into a nightmare when they find themselves running from the living dead. The movie has some gory parts, but it can be so damn funny at the sametime.

This is my favorite zombie movie. It combines comedy, edge of the seat thrills, very intense spots and a good soundtrack. If you never seen this before, I highly recommend buying this. For those who have seen it. Even though a couple of voices and songs are altered. I still enjoy this movie and I just take it with a grain of salt. Hopefully a true remastered version gets put out.

I haven't heard much underground stuff lately because I'm in the military but growing up with Snapper as we called him back then I know he has a lot of talent. Big props to a homey from Bogalusa,LA. Snapper keep holding it down. No matter what you and Bucky are still cool with me. LOL. My sister who lives out in Irving,TX keeps me up on music and she says you are holding it down out there. No doubt, represent.

"Swing Out Sister" does it again, with the right balance of Jazz, Pop and Soul. Just put it in your CD and forget about it! Four stars!

2 out of 5 stars A Not-So-Beautiful Letdown.......2006-10-20

My sentiments reflect many others here. I'll never forget the first time I heard "Breakout". I was on a flight from Toronto to London on Canadian Airlines, and this was the one song I could not wait to come around again in one of their audio programmes. Having then developed into a huge Sister fan, I remember how excited I was when I bought this CD. When repeated listening failed to produce the usual rewards that come with patience and familiarity, I went from "puzzled" to "disappointed". It's not that it's too slow and not upbeat enough: the music is just not of the same calibre of any of the first 3 memorable albums. Not a single song stands out. As a result, I've not checked out any of the other subsequent CDs either. That maybe folly on my part, as even batters are allowed 3 strikes. But even if SOS did not produce another CD that comes close to matching the brilliance of "Kaleidoscope World", or another song that matches the poignancy of a song like "Incomplete Without You" or "Forever Blue", I would be eternally grateful for the immeasureable joy they've brought into my world. I will on occasion go back to listening to this, but so far I've not come away with much more. You may soon find this on eBay courtesy of moi.

2 out of 5 stars music lover.......2005-08-02

This CD was just too slow, not enough of that great, breezy feel to the music that one expects from this group. I found it very disappointing after some of the other wonderful CD's they released. Unless you are into slow, dull music, don't get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing".......2004-06-12

at first glance at the reviews of LIVING RETURN i read all the ones that hated this one first, or the ones assuming the position that somehow this offering is horrible.LETS GET ON THING STRAIGHT , THIS IS A FLUID CRAFTED PIECE. A STANDOUT RECORDING.
THE LIVING RETURN IS A FANTASTIC DEPARTURE FROM THE PREVIOUS 3 ALBUMS IN CONTENT ARRANGEMENT AND FLOW. it has teeth, grit and a vulnerable quality that combine all that swing out sister bring to their musical table.
SOUL IS WHAT THE THEME IS HERE. A CHANCE TO SHINE WHEN EVERYONE EXPECTS THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. sometimes this album connects so immensely to you . one falls in and catches what andy and corinne are really about and has made their sound more captivating. if that is possible. i mean it just changed alot of peoples perception of the duo instantly.
taking from many r&b, soul and jazz giants and melding them with swing out sister charm and wit. you cannot go wrong with this choice. i do however recommend the first three recordings, "IT'S BETTER TO TRAVEL,KALIEDOSCOPE WORLD AND GET IN TOUCH WITH YOURSELF FIRST BEFORE VENTURING HERE. ONLY BECAUSE IF YOU WANT TO HEAR GROWTH IN THIS DUO YOU NEED TO HEAR EVERYTHING BEFORE THIS GORGEOUS OFFERING. AND remember if you gotta ask who what swing out sister are, you will never get THE LIVING RETURN.YOU GOTTA GO BACK BEFORE YOU SWING FORWARD.

4 out of 5 stars Swingout Sister strike again!!.......2004-02-20

this CD is not my favourite Swingout Sister Album..

However it is a very SOLID and light hearted List of Songs ..that will please everyone who apreciates cleverly arranged catchy melodies ...

In this album Swingout Sisters were in a " Funky" mood ..which might be a refreshing change from the Bacharachian tickles in most of there releases.

All in all a MUST HAVE for all SOS - FANS ...

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb collection.......2006-03-07

If you love or are just curious about the music of Vienna's Strauss family, this is the box set for you. You need look no further. Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic set the standards for the performance of these sublime waltzes, polkas and marches. The sound is fine, too, even though the recordings are not new. This is, quite simply, a magnificent set. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12

A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of "An der schönen blauen Donau" has been omitted.

No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.

The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.

5 out of 5 stars Strauss's Lover Must Own!!!!!.......2001-10-09

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of Khachaturian suites.......2004-12-27

Khachaturian (1903-1978) was an Armenian composer who came under scrutiny during the reign of Stalin for adhering more to "antipopular" musical styles. His style is similar to Prokofiev's and Shostakovich's; sometimes, his music seems like a blend of the two composers' styles. More modern comparisons to Khachaturian include Basil Poledouris ('Robocop,' 'Hunt for Red October,' 'Conan the Barbarian') and Danny Elfman ('Beetlejuice,' 'Edward Scissorhands'). The Finale of 'Prisoner No.217,' at times, harmonically resembles 'Conan the Barbarian.' I do not recommend this CD as an introduction to Khachaturian's music, rather try a recording of his ballet 'Spartacus.'

The Overture to 'Pepo,' the first track on the album, is perhaps the most beautiful of all the tracks.

'Undying Flame' is a suite of eight small pieces -- the longest, the Finale, being only three and a half minutes in length. 'The battle and Christ' is quite exciting with high woodwind flurries and charging snares and timpani. The Finale begins like an organ chorale with thumping bass and homophonic texture. It builds to a climax of sorts but it isn't very exciting. The final chord features the high woodwinds with horn and string bass. The harp plucks an augmented fourth above the tonic, leaving the final chord very dissonant but still beautiful.

'Secret Mission' is six pieces also of short length. Percussion shines through again, especially in "Surrender." Triplet figures in the trumpets and woodblock provide a galloping-horse effect; nevermind that 'Secret Mission' was a WWII flick. "The pilot" is a wonderful march with syncopation, piccolo and xylophone melody, and a cute brass riff. This suite also has another exciting Finale.

The Overture in 'Admiral Ushakov' contains an interesting pastorale-like melody for clarinet and oboe. "The Battle" is interesting with continuous sixteenth-note licks in the horns. Tubas get a moment to shine here, but percussion and trumpets slightly drown them out. "Funeral" contains beautiful, sombre chord progressions supporting a very 'Russian' melody in the strings. "Russian sailors" contains a march very Mahler-esque in style with timpani playing the tonic and dominant and the horns playing a heroic tune with accents from the trumpets. The Finale is the first on the CD that actually leaves you feeling like the suite has come to its full fruition.

Conversely, the Overture of 'Prisoner No.217' is the first to sound like a true overture with better developed melodies and sections of contrasting mood. "Murder" contains a creepy passage with bass clarinet melody, shivering strings, and a dancing-bone xylophone. "In the prison" continues the dark mood with the shivering strings even higher and an evil downward three-note figure in the lower strings. Percussion begs to burst forth, but that doesn't occur until "Work." The Finale, although not the best Finale on this recording, contains many beautiful moments, especially one passage following a connecting solo cello line.

As a whole, this is a nice collection of Khachaturian's suites, 'Secret Mission' being the most spectacular. Armenians must be proud of their Philharmonic Orchestra, especially its percussion section. The package has great liner notes. The fade in the concert hall can be heard at the end of some tracks, which is a good thing. It makes it seem more like a performance instead of a recording.

      Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
