5 out of 5 stars So good it could stop time.......2007-03-10

Why must you French musicians torture me with your haunting, dark experimental, genius music? This is a genuine start to finish album. Take it from the top. Sometimes so simple other times a weird, deranged, water damaged, symphonic road trip. If you want to be put in a mood, what one, you decide, there are a lot to chose from here, then get this. I've got to stop listening to music it's too much sometimes

4 out of 5 stars todo un postre.......2004-03-23

Genial

5 out of 5 stars la sonida de tristesa.......2004-01-27

This album is so delicate and subtle. Really beautiful stuff. At first, I was a bit disappointed, waiting for some sort of climax (there is almost no percussion), but such a good listen! I read another review once... they said that his music is less about music as it is emotion and I believe that's why the production value is so minimal. It is still quite captivating despite this, and is so much more personal.

The music gives me images of these great stories being told that I can only speculate. In "Une vie de papa" there are some calling whistles that remind me of the kind my father used to do. They sound very lonely though, especially once they take over the somber melody backed by a strange breathy voice. "Grec" is a simple and short acoustic ballad with light airy birds and a quiet brook. I can just picture him sitting next to that brook playing it to a girl. Very cinematic.

Other pieces that he actually sings on are written skillfully. I don't hear any tired out chord progressions or structures. "Universe" is a forlorn piece that he sings through a watery psychedelic filter. Very desolate. I saw him perform this on his website with a thereminist and it was so quiet you could hear everyone coughing and breathing. "Black Douleur" is my favorite piece, probably the most "peppy" (if you can say that about him) and instrumentally diverse song on the album. The background girl-vocals and french horns horn arrangements bring the album to a beautiful close, although it leaves me wishing for more.

All in all, I gave this a 5 because lonely music is usually only conveyed in aggression and violence (such as metal), but he can do it so delicately on "L'Incroyable Verite".

NOTE: The sticker on the cover described the music as Gothic psychedelia, and I suppose one could categorize. But don't buy this album thinking that it's going to be over-the-top tripped out effects and beats (like Manitoba, Boards of Canada, or even Air). He has a much more subtle sensibility.

5 out of 5 stars One of 2001's best releases. We want more!!!.......2002-07-11

Mellow, cinematic, dark, nostalgic, beautiful. As he says on his website: "You should listen to my album alone and by candlelight." Sebastien Tellier has given us something very special and unique. I just wish he'd come out with another album soon! His first song was discovered on Source Records "Source Material" album. That incredible song "Fantino" is also here. Air discovered him from "Source Material" as Nicolas Godin fell in love with "Fantino". I'm not sure what the Philadelphia reviewer saw when they saw him live, but when I saw him it was a surreal experience. He plays with Pamelia Kurstin, who Bob Moog himself has called "The best theremin player in the world." I had the good fortune of being able to interview him in Dallas while on tour and he is not at all the dark and scary man his picture and music would have you believe. He was extremely nice, funny, and my girlfriend at the time thought he was hot. Haha, ok, the last few sentences weren't really necessary. In anycase, this was easily one of the best releases of 2001. As I write this he is about to tour Europe, but I can't help but hope something new comes out soon and he makes it back over to the states. C'mon Sebastien, GIVE US MORE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Dramatic Pause.......2001-11-15

Highly noirish and cinematic, Sebastian Tellier's debut is simply marvellous. At once a vivid understanding of a beating heart and in another moment the very state of regret and remembrance. Touting simplicity that lulls a sigh deep from within your gut.
