Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

Dark.......2007-03-17

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

Music From Other Lifetimes.......2007-07-28

I have been listening to Louis Hardin since 1974 when I was simultaneously introduced to MOONDOG and ALL GOOD MEN by Beaver & Krause - I think I must have used up all of my musical luck because nothing (including The Beatles, who are right up there next to God) has since resonated in me the way these two albums have. Hardin's unabashed musical honesty can be found but in two places, children and geniuses, and I think there must be a lot of both in Hardin. Each composition takes you on a different journey, if the listener has the courage to jump aboard; I always close my eyes, to be closer to the way the music was composed. I am particularly fond of his first album MOONDOG for a lot of reasons, but mostly I think because it was my introduction to a composer who has yet to meet his match, even within himself. As times change (and they inevitably will), other of his works will come to the fore and take their rightful place among the few that will always rise above all the rest.

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

A recording of the band's finest hour...........................2006-08-15

With the long-awaited return of Dino Valente to the band as singer and songwriter, Quicksilver Messenger Service marked perhaps its finest hour during the recording of this particular album. Unfortunately, Mr. Valente had been absent during the recording of the band's previous two studio albums, "Quicksilver Messenger Service" and "Shady Grove", and during the band's live concert recording, namely, the album, "Happy Trails." Problems with the law and a failed attempt to make it happen musically in New York City alone and also with QMS colleague, guitarist Gary Duncan, drew him away from the band for an extended period of time. The added absence of Gary Duncan prompted the rest of the band to ask Nicky Hopkins to join them during the recording of their second studio album. Nicky Hopkins was one of rock history's preeminent pianists, having had contributed his talent to many memorable albums by top artists, ranging from the Rolling Stones to the Who. There is no exception here, with Quicksilver Messenger Service, as evident on this particular album, and on the previous studio album, especially on the song entitled, "Edward, the Mad Shirt Grinder."

The band at this stage of its history also included a gifted guitarist by the name of John Cipollina whose style was quite unique--John Cipollina oftentimes used the tremolo bar on his solid-body Gibson while playing solos and also while playing as a counterpoint to the guitar work of fellow band member, Gary Duncan. A wonderful aspect of the band at this particular point in time was the fact that two of its members were capable of playing "true" lead guitar at any one time. Unfortunately, shortly after the recording of this album, John Cipollina left the band. He eventually formed the band, Copperhead.

Quicksilver Just for Love.......2006-02-24

I grew up in the Bay Area in the late sixties so I became very familiar with the "San Francisco" bands of that time and I seemed to enjoy many of the bands that never had "tremendous success". Quicksilver falls into that category and I have to admit they were among many of the groups of that area and time that had to be experienced live to know what they were really like and to see them at their best. That's not to say that I don't like their studio material because I do. This album was a new direction for Quicksilver with Dino Valenti returning after doing some time for a drug bust. While this may not be their strongest album I would have to say it's worth buying for the song "Fresh Air" which became a sort of an anthem of that time. This album and the one that followed "What About Me" are essential to any Quicksilver fan that is serious about what this band was about and wants to experience the magic of the music of that time and place. Some other bands worth looking into to get the flavor of that era: Moby Grape, Cold Blood, It's a Beautiful Day, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Malo, Hot Tuna, Tower of Power, The Youngbloods, Blue Cheer, The Blues Image, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and Country Joe and the Fish. They just don't make 'em like that anymore sorry to say.

Lost Gems.......2004-12-15

Certainly QMS represented the best of "Jam Rock" with their style of 2 guitar, point and counterpoint method of playing.Whether intentional or not they touched the very essence of classical music structure and connotation,which resulted in a musical conversation rather than merely a song.They gave a great effort on this album and it was well engineered

Best of the original Albums by QMS.......2004-09-06

I think this was the best QMS Albumb that was ever released. This Album had profound influnce upon my life when it was originally released and it is still one of my favorite Cd's to play. The guitar playing was profoundly original and creative for it's time, and so was the piano. Nicky Hopkins went on to play with the Rolling Stones.. I would say it has with stood the test of time too, still sounding unique, and undated... Quicksliver had some later Albums that had some pretty good suff on them, but none of the later work seemed to hold unity as well as this album did. There were a lot of bands putting out concept albums, at that time, where it wasn't just a culmanation of songs, but the whole Album was to be listened to at one sitting...That's what this Album is and was, I don't see that idea playing out as well in any other Quicksilver Album. May the memory of these great artists, who lived like there was no tomorrow live on...

timeless classic!.......2004-08-03

Quicksilver Messenger-one of THE best West-Coast bands ,of all time,No doubt!!!This -"Just for Love", made at a time when Dino Valenti's influence was great,as lead singer-/songwriter, is one of my personal favourites!!I just love this album-even more so on c.d.!They were one hot band -great drummer,great bass,GREAT lead guitarist(s),too!!Either love or hate Dino Valenti's voice/lyrics-i adored his fabulous voice,totally unique(his solo album STILL amazes me 35 years on)......So here we have Q.M.S. AT A PEAK IN THEIR RECORDED OUTPUT,NO DOUBT!!A Hippy/Hard-rock/soft-rock masterpiece great production/ ..a timeless classic,folks--get it-NOW!!!!!

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes four arias from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice recorded live in Holland, which show why Euridice was one of her signature roles. Two beautifully sung Handel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie) are greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier's voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent's grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. Este disco realiza un repaso bastante acertado a la carrera de la mitica contralto Kathleen Ferrier, una de esas voces que hicieron historia y que pasaron a la historia, y con razon.
Junto a unos duetos de Purcell y Mendelshon, y otras canciones, asi como unas arias de Haendel, en las que Ferrier ya va mostrando su gran talento, lo mejor de este disco esta indudablemente en la seleccion del 'Orfeo ed Euridice' de Gluck, tomada de unas funciones en directo a principios de los 50. La Ferrier sienta catedra en la interpretacion del personaje: lo lleva dentro, y lo canta de una forma admirable. Sin duda esta es una de las mejores encarnaciones de 'Orfeo' jamas escuchadas.
El otro pilar del disco son los 'Kindertotenlieder' de Mahler, otra de las maximas especialidades de Ferrier, de los que realiza una version antologica, por voz, diccion y expresion, magistralmente dirigida por Bruno Walter. Un lujazo, vamos.
El disco se consigue actualmente a precio medio, y las remasterizaciones son de calidades variadas (puesto que las grabaciones son de años diferentes) pero el nivel general de las mismas es bastante bueno.
Indudablemente este es un disco que hay que poseer, ya que quizas se trate de uno de los mejores documentos existentes para apreciar el tremendo talento de la gran Kathleen Ferrier.

The incredible Kathleen Ferrier recordings!.......2003-05-20

Voice fans, rejoice -- EMI has finally remastered these recordings and released them as one CD at budget price!
While Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" would be the chief reason for purchasing this CD right away, it also contains several morsels, equally fascinating. Purcell and Mendelsohn's duets, Handel's arias, Greene's spirituals, and 3 live arias from Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". In general, particularly Mahler, the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. BUT why could not these engineers do the same for "Orfeo" selections? There's a lot of noise on these. On all the selection Ferrier's exceptionally dark mezzo (or contralto with a huge upper register) shines brilliantly. Of course, Mahler's songs bemoaning the death of children are not an easy listen by any means. But the melodies are amazingly harmonious and Bruno Walter's superb orchestra provides ideal background for them, with Ferrier's voice blending gorgeously with strings. Only Mussorgsky could take a subject such as this and make it so breathtakingly captivating. It's actually frightening in by itself. Gerald Moore (well-known for his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanies expertly on Purcell and Mendelsohn's selections.
It would be a treat to hear Ferrier in more alto repertoire; I am just not sure how many were commercially available at the time. Right now, Vivica Genaux is the leading artist in this area, but it would be fascinating to compare these two.
For the sheer vocal marvel experience, do not delay in getting this CD.

A Terrible Beauty.......2002-11-14

Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the music industry.

Mahler's wife Alma bitterly opposed his setting of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder to music and considering the death of their daughter soon after, it's doubtful if she ever forgave him for it. But the finished work has an indescribable beauty that Kathleen Ferrier and Mahler's protégé Bruno Walter give full expression to in away that no other interpreter's have even approached. More than 50 years on this is both a lasting tribute to the artists involved and an indictment of the decline in standards since.

What is to say - It's Ferrier..........2002-03-31

I bought the CD for the Kindertotenlieder and that's what I am going to write about (though the rest of the program is equally impressive). Ferrier's Mahler interpretations are always in the 5+ star area. When Walter is accompanying her the results are even better (unlike the case of Klemperer). The first song - Nun Will Die Sonn'... the darkness of the music is so prominent, it's breathtaking. All the rest Kindertotenlieder come in the same fashion. If interested in a release with better sound but not these Olympian contritutors, Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have made some very good discs

How can you go wrong?.......2001-10-22

I said it before, in my review of the Ferrier/Walter performance of Das Lied von der Erde, recently rereleased by Decca; Ferrier is the authoritative interpreter of Mahler songs--and I have never heard anything to equal this performance of Kindertotenlieder.

"The King of Breaks" does it again.......2006-03-05

First of all, if you are not an avid Icey fan, you might not like this. When I first listened to this CD, there was only a couple of tracks that I liked, so that's why I say what I did to start with. But after hearing a few of these tracks when I saw Icey live for the 2nd time, and went back and listened to it again, and definately like it a lot more. If you're looking for your average FL breaks, or for that matter, just average breaks, I wouldn't recommend this cd, or (once again) for that matter, latter Icey period. But if you're ready for something over the edge and different that only Icey can provide, definately buy this. Also, check out his newest CD only available at hot topic stores and on the hot topic website rite now, "Twisted."

A new direction for Icey?.......2005-10-23

Track 6 seems to stick out me in the mere fact that Icey seems to be talking to the listener. "Don't drop to this, take a crack at this, not agebra or calculus, you'll try to 'dis, take a crack at this, not algebra or calculus." Like he knows that this release would not be well received by his core listeners. It isn't FL breaks, nor is it really breakbeats either.

This is not the Icey you are used to hearing in the clubs, but never-the-less, this is Icey in his "Big Beat" mode. Perhaps this is the direction he wants to take commercially, to fuse different sounds into "Florida Breaks". A crossover album per se. In this respect he does the job flawlessly. If you just want Florida Breaks, than you should look elsewhere.

It is interesting to note that a lot of reviewers equate DJ Icey to breakbeats. I guess people assume because he has breaks as a staple of his style, his style is break beats. This album is "Big Beats". I guess those who haven't seen his direction live and on CD over the years won't get this album.

Buy it if you are just getting into breakbeats, FL breaks, or want to hear something that fuses FL breaks/beats with crossover tunes. Do not buy this if you want break beats, FL breaks, or if you can't listen to a "cross-over" album objectively.

This is one album that I really didnt understand.The so called "king of breaks" can really come up with some strange stuff,thats a sho nuff.Let me recommend his "Essential Mix"to any dance fan,and unless you are a die hard Icey fan,I wouldnt buy this

DJ Icey was one of the first DJs to get me into any techno. I own all of his CDs. I got a chance to see him live in Minneapolis about a month ago. He definetly tore it up and got the crowd going. This would be a good CD if you are a long time Icey fan, the funky Florida break elements are still found on this CD. Highlights would include the remix of Shakedown's "At Night" and Two Lone Swordsmen's "Neuflex". I have been a fan of Two Lone Swordsmen for years now and was kind of sad to find in the liner notes that Icey had just found out about them as of late. But back to the point, if you are a first time listener pick up his "Essential Mix" album. If you already have that pick up his "Essential Elements" album. If you are at that point and dig those albums you will dig on this album as well.

I've seen Icey rip it up live twice, great performance both times, had the crowd jumpin', but I've heard better than this from Icey. Pass this one up and grab one of his older releases. One Love, Peace.

As fans of musical theater, we're used to offbeat projects, but this long-forgotten show takes the cake--and it's completely entrancing. The opening number alone makes nasty fun of the then-popular beatniks and is immediately followed by "New York," a list song enumerating all the awful things about the city. Rarely has so much bile been spilled on the New York stage--but perhaps that's because the show originated in St. Louis. Tommy Wolf's finger-snapping score and Fran Landesman's biting lyrics are very compelling, especially because it's hard to tell when they're serious and when they're drily sarcastic. The energetic cast, which includes Larry Hagman (best known as JR in Dallas), is backed by a jazz quartet, and the result often sounds strangely contemporary. And then you have some numbers, such as "Night People," that are almost Sondheimian. What a strange, wonderful little show this is. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The songs in this musical are simply wonderful! Canny, passionate, "beat," and sardonic. The story, its characters, and the lyrics are classic Greenwich Village of the late 1950's. This CD features talented singers and actors (including a very young Larry Hagman),a great lyricist, lush and complex music. To reiterate, it's just WONDERFUL! I ruined my LP long ago, and am THRILLED to find this CD replacement.

A fun recording to have on CD. Very beatnik oriented musical from 1959 with such interesting names in the cast as Tom Aldredge (Into the Woods, Passion) and Larry Hagman!? The song "New York" is a lot of fun. The best of the rest the score include "The Ballad of the Sad Young Man" sung by Tan Seitz and "Laugh, I Thought I'd Die" sung by Richard Hayes. Larry Hagman has one song, "Travel the Road of Love" and although he doesn't embarrass himself, thank God "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Dallas" were still be come. He definitely did not inherit his mother's singing ability. In fact, I think his mother was performing in "The Sound of Music" during the short run of this show.

Whoever coined the saying about old dogs and new tricks never anticipated this powerhouse two-disc song cycle. Fueled with an apocalyptic, post-9/11 urgency and driven by far more musical muscle than one expects from this veteran folk troubadour, the collection could stand as a companion piece to Bob Dylan's "Love and Theft". (Andersen acknowledges Dylan's inspiration by dedicating the album to him.) The opening "Ain't No Time to Bleed" sets the tone with a wailing duet vocal by Phoebe Snow and slashing guitar from Eric Bazilian, while "Song of You and Me," "Great Pyramid," and the relentless "Rains Are Gonna Come" sustain the hard-driving dynamic. For fans of Andersen's balladry, "Shape of a Broken Heart" and "Under the Shadows" (with vocals from daughter Sari) evoke the open-hearted spirit of his 1972 classic Blue River. Yet nothing in a career that stretches almost 40 years anticipates the 26-minute title track, an atmospheric, phantasmagoric meditation on the day President Kennedy was killed. Half-spoken, half-sung, it sounds like a cross between Lou Reed and Robbie Robertson while recalling an era when freeform FM radio rewarded such experimentation. With the project taking the sort of risks that one doesn't expect from an artist turning 60, this is easily the most ambitious music that Andersen has ever made, and some of the best as well. --Don McLeese

"Stranded in the wilderness, high inside my hand, for every act of wickedness, another grain of sand," Eric sings on the opener "Ain't No Time to Bleed" with Phoebe Snow's vocals soaring behind Eric's burning lyrics. When Eric sings "Jesus pawned his cross," it's evident we're in a for a bumpy ride as Eric dedicates this to Bob Dylan who he describes as, "true poet, hard worker, man of constant wonder, good friend, teacher, the master." If Dylan's the master, Andersen's an apt pupil as he changes gears for the midtempo "Before Everything Changed." Eric hits his softer side on "Shape of a Broken Heart," with Joyce Andersen's aching violin giving the bare-bones melody a dream-like quality. Eric rocks again on the haunting "Great Pyramid," "I'm looking for the holy man banished on the cross; I'm looking for the eyes of God, I'm looking for the loss." On "Rains Are Gonna Come" Eric again rocks full throttle. Garth Hudson's piano pounds on the rocker "Stupid Love." Lucy Kaplansky does background vocals on the soft lovely melody "Still Looking for You." "It's time to let the river just flow" Eric sings seeking peace on "Feel Like Comin' Home." On the second disc, the 26 minute "Beat Avenue" is a homage to the beat poets referencing memories of John Kennedy's assassination. Eric's voice talk-sings like a sober Tom Waits alienated and apart from a world that seems out of control. Eric concludes with a slow blues groove and snarls through the 10-minute "Blue Rockin' Chair," "Trying to be a beggar but you don't know how."

Eric Andersen is incredible in so many ways. He is first and foremost an artist striving for quality. His lyrics are some of the most intricate and literate; so it's a shame that they are not printed here. [My apology in advance if I've incorrectly heard the lyrics I quoted.] Eric is also incredible because he is a survivor with a 40-year career in which he is still expanding horizons. continuing greatness.......2003-03-05

Eric Andersen has been putting out wonderful records for almost 40 years now. From his earliest work he has always been one of the giants of the singer songwriter field, and yet somehow his stature has never received the achnowledgement it has so clearly merited. Has the New York Times devoted an extensive review to any of his albums over the last 15 years (since "Ghosts Upon the Road)? I don't think so. And yet Andersen's work over that time has been among his strongest ever...remarkable work quite simply beyond the reach of anyone other than Dylan. Dylan, of course, has had a great 90's too, but he has also gotten plenty of recognition for it. Will this superb record change that? Probably not, but it should. Musically and lyrically it is a triumph for Andersen. The music is full of energy and variety. The band plays wonderfully behind him. And the lyrics...one song after the next...are astonishingly rich. Beat Avenue is a master at the very top of his game. It is inconceivable to me that a record better than this will come out this year.

Career Defining at the Age of 60.......2003-02-27

Eric Andersen is one of those vanguard pioneers who came out of the Northern snowfields in the 60's and set about blurring the lines as to what songwriting was supposed to be about. As original and creative as his comtemporaries, some of whom inspired him, some of whom he challenged, much as fellow Canadian Neil Young would a few years later, Andersen seemed to trawl the darker waters of the soul, without falling under the sweep of the tide. Nothing's changed. It's only improved with age.
His career hit a watershed moment with "Blue River", and as the "Lost Tapes" confirmed, he was very much the musical counterpoint to Thomas Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow." The BIG buisness of recording eventually ignored him, so he took himself back to the woodshed of his origins and began a long, fruitful and philosophically intense sojourn in Norway. All of the CDs from this epoch in his life are worth seeking out, in particular his collaborations with Jonas Fjeld, and later with Rick Danko.
But even with all of these extraordinary achievements, I have to admit I was completely blown away by the power of this CD. As the official reviewer states, this somewhat harkens back to a time when radio was less market researched and would give you a shot at stringing together something bold, creative, innovative. Andersen was all that in spades all along. It has reached its zenith here.
The opening disc, supported by a superb cadre of musicians and singers, including his daughter, has all the trademarks of Eric Andersen at the top of his game. The second disc is a meditation on what went wrong with the world when America slew its leader. As McLeese notes, this is the kind of epic that perhaps only Robbie Robertson or Dylan could pull off with the same cogency, drama, power. It's not like you suddenly become brain dead at 60, but when you consider how safe most people try to play their lives by that point, to summon the courage and integrity to push songwriting and philosophical beliefs at this point in his life is positively Heideggerian in its daunting bravery. Plus it's sheer genius. Andersen went right to the cliff and lept off. His flight into the heavens is a thing of wonder, and he has a lot of very important observations to make that we ought to listen to, if we're not going to kill ourselves off for sure. Essentially, his is a soul that wants to come home. He has sought that home in lovers, family, music, Norway, North America. He looks for it still and will not release his soul or his heart or his mind until he finds it. Quite a statement from an artist who has always made quite a statement. Get this. You owe it to yourself.

I thought this was a good CD, I tend to like music form all over the world. I found a few songs to be great. Some songs on it I wasn't too impressed with. Over all it was a good CD I listen to it to relax and even to get me in the mood.

This is a very wonderful cd...the cover art is lovely and the music is relaxing... I know it is music for the Kama Sutra, but I slip this cd in on my way to work, and I have a good day every time! So, it is not only for intimate moments!
I only gave it 4.5 stars cause it does get a tad bit repetitive towards the end, and I don't care for the last 4 songs as much as the first 3. Yes, there are only 7 songs on this cd, however, they are all pretty long. There is a lot of native instruments of India used on this cd, and there is some beautiful singing and vocalizing on all tracks.It does take you away from the everyday, and can be used as a relaxing tool for meditation...or anything else you want to use it for...
Try it, you'll love it!
