A FIRMLY PLANTED GANJA PLANT.......2004-01-16

Of all the non-jamaican reggae artists I've heard, 10ft. may very well be the most impressive. The tracks have an old-school feel to them while still sounding fresh and new. There's a few members of John Brown's Body involved in this project but I think that the Plant sounds even more authentic. If you like roots, then please pick this up!

A MUST HAVE !!!!!.......2001-10-16

If you're a fan of John Brown's Body, you simply must find a place for this CD in your collection. A collaboration between Craig Welsh and various musicians including members of JBB, these tracks will round out your reggae collection with an alternative but rootsy feel and sound. Great lyrics by Welsh and The Plant. The riffs are really phat in places. The keyboarding is simply AWESOME - traditional but fresh. In fact, for me, the keyboarding, combined with some serious, infectious and psychodelic dub, provides some of the most memorable highlights. And although I'm not sure if it's my system or not, but my recording features some very welcome feedback on the phatter base line.
Key Tracks: "Born Free" (not sure who's on vocals but his voice sounds like Floyd Lloyd - a Jamaican ska favorite), "Long Time Ago" (unsure of lead vocals, fantastic background vocals almost sounding like the Gladiators or Israel Vibration), "Time I Know" (a rootsy phsychodelic ode to Jah with Kevin Kinsella on lead vocals), "Soul Love" (rootsy track with an R&B feel and some nice harp) "Pure Sugar" (very JBB-like sound featuring Kevin Kinsella and Elliot Martin on vocals). "Jah Will Go On", "Two Bulls" and "Hillside Airstrip" provide some trippy dub. Turn the lights out, the volume up and the bass all the way to the right - THIS IS PHAT!
If you ever get a chance to see John Brown's Body live - do it. I've seen them twice at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA and thoroughly enjoyed myself. One of the few bands that have mastered the fine art of live dub without producing waves of electronic dribble. There is word of a forthcoming album, but unfortunately I also here their label, Shanachie, recently dropped them. No worries, another will surely pick them up soon. Enjoy.

The best American roots/dub you've ever heard............2001-03-15

This album knocked me down---Spawning from members of the incredible Northeast rootical band John Brown's Body (JBB), this studio dub can be compared to the greatest. From top to bottom I was continually blown away--if you didn't know any better you'd think it was layed down at Tubby's in '79. Even the beautiful cover artwork (as well as the theme) represents JA. Take special note of track 2--as the title implies it's PURE SUGAR! This tune utilizes the vocals of JBB members Kevin and Elliot, and shows the world how talented they truly are. TIME I KNOW, WALKEY WALK TALL, and the psychedelic TWO BULLS stand out as phenomenal, but there is not one weak track--I have already purchased 2 of these discs!!!--WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION IS DUE.--Big up to Craig Welsch for his IMMENSE skills, to JBB and associated members, and to Ithaca/Boston for keepin' it real. Album Description

Taking Chances combines a mixture of crafty originals and timeless standards. The release kicks off with a fiery intro by Dana Hall on Stafford's A Nick Off The Mark. This Afro-Cuban delight showcases Stafford's extraordinary range and control of the trumpet. Tim Warfield on soprano saxophone and pianist Bruce Barth also contribute engaging solos on this tune. Pegasus, written by Barth, is a bebop-oriented tune that displays the artistic range of the group. The pace slows for a lovely rendition of the ballad Taking A Chance On Love by Duke, Fetter and LaTouche. Warfield on soprano, Stafford on flugelhorn, Barth and Hodge all play exquisite solos. The group has a fresh take on the traditional Jesus Loves Me. The rhythm section vamps while Warfield and Stafford exchange phrases. This culminates when the melody is played in unison with great force. The group finds its groove with Blues For J.T., a funky original by Stafford, which he dedicates to his father. The ballad Old Folks by Hill and Robison showcases Stafford's fluid and lush playing on this standard. Paper Trail by Dana Hall bounces with great energy. Warfield displays why he is one of the great tenor players today. Stafford and Hall build off each other throughout the song with their hard bop phrasing. The evening comes to a close with a bang on Warfield's hip composition Shake It For Me.

Awesome Hard Bop.......2007-06-14

If you like hard bop Art Blakey style but with a modern twist then you will love this CD. All the playing is top-notch but of special note is Tim Warfield who blows as good as he ever has. The sound quality is fantastic for a live recording, it makes you feel like you're right there in the middle of all the action. When you look over the track list don't be fooled by the cut Jesus Loves Me. Yes this is the same tune that many of us learned as a little child in our Sunday school class. And it starts out with that same melody but then it transforms in to a hard bop work out as Tim Warfield takes the melody tears it to shreds then puts it back together again. This will easily be one of the top CDs of the year. And one of Terrell Staffords best CDs ever.

Bass Chalice, is 10 Ft. Ganja Plants third release on ROIR. Their first, entitled Hillside Airstrip, and second, Midnight Landing, were both uniformly hailed by the music press (see next page). This time around, things are a bit different. First off, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant will be touring! Before this, the only chance anyone had to see them live was at an impromptu show, usually in the Boston area. There have only been a handful of these gigs and their frenzied, sweaty nature has left audiences clamoring for more. In early 2006, they will get it10 Ft. Ganja Plants first ever tour! Beyond this, Bass Chalice sees 10 Ft. stripping away a bit of the mystery surrounding the bands lineup and actually letting us disclose a very special guest appearance by the legendary 70s Jamaican vocal reggae group The Meditations! Their first two albums, Message from the Meditations and Wake Up are downright, stone-cold reggae classics that must be heard. On Bass Chalice they grace To Each with a spellbinding vocal performance! The Meditations are a fitting addition to the album because Bass Chalice, at its heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts at Motown and Stax) where a song was typically written, learned, and recorded live in a single session, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation and you begin to get the picture. This is good news for a genre that seems to be gathering steam in recent months. Apart from big releases on ROIR by Dub Trio, Bush Chemists & Dr. Israel, other bands have been making their mark on stages around the country: Matisyahu, Future Pigeon, Dub Nomads, Dub Gabriel, Dub As A Weapon, Jah Division, and (on a different level) Damian Junior Gong Marley. Dub & roots reggae is more popular than ever and the 10 Ft. Ganja Plant army is poised to make a big, smoky impression.

Another Solid Album.......2006-04-07

Bass Chalice is yet another really solid album from a group that I think deserves more attention. If you like their first two albums then you definitely need to pick this one up. Bass Chalice, for the most part, holds true to form to their 70's roots style with modern touches that make this group so great to listen to. That being said, I feel that this album is more modern sounding than the other two. They have added some horns into the mix (ie. "Suits and Ski Masks") that add a jazzier feel as well as losing a bit of that really rootsy studio sound that they have captured so well in the past. The first track "Blood Money" has stood out as the best track for me and creates an almost impossible standard for the rest of the disk to live up to. I agree with the last review that not every track is strong although still a must-have if you are a fan. I can't wait until they go on tour.

Bass Chalice is, in my opinon, 10ft ganja plants best album I was disappointed in Midnight landing, very pleased with hillside airstrip, but bas chalice has to top them with out a doubt. Like its title bass chalice as some very original and enjoyable bass lines. "blood money" is a great song with a very cool bass line and doesnt go on for to long the same goes for "bass chalice" which has an uplifteing beat and finishes the cd perfecttly. the reason it doesnt get a 5 is because not every song is all that great. Overall If you are a roots fan and treasure well written bass lines bass chalice should be in your roots reggae collection

HIS BEST ONE YET.......2001-03-20

James Harman in the studio is one the best singer/harmonica players in the business. He knows the difference between playing live and making an album. His cd's have themes or concepts like a motel "Do Not Disturb" and barbecue "Extra Napkins". "Taking Chances" about gambling is his best one yet. It has great sound quality and variety with solid backing musicians. "Crapshoot" a driving/dancing song is the highlight of many with that tough harp that's all James. The packaging which has pictures of everything from dice to lucky dogs adds to the mixture. Thank You.baby!

Hedge your bets on Harman and Company.......2000-01-05

I would like to begin by saying that if you have not seen James Harman perform live you are missing a true artist who is committed to his trade. That said, "Takin' Chances," like all good blues is an easy listen. Harman and his band are practitioners of the "less is more" school of music. If you are looking for flashy, mechanical playing this record is not for you. If you are a fan of music made with soul "Taking Chances" is a sure bet (pun intended). Harman and friends (Kid Ramos, Bob Margolin, and Robby Eason, among others)have a sound that ranges from Lightin' Hopkins to T-Bone Walker, to Early Howlin' Wolf with Pat Hare. Moreover, Harman is a brilliant song writer who's songs unfold like stories shared among close friends. One listen to Harman's haunting "Old Man Eyes" is proof positive of his lyrical prowess. This talented man is committed to a sound, something that is lost in much of the music being played today. Go on James!

This record is not a surprise to all of James's and all blues fans!! Will all know that James is one of the best doing what he does. This record brings out what James does in his live show. Kid Ramos does his thing on "Read My Mind". The record sound is awsome.. The engineering so well done. Jerry Hall Always does his job. Forever in love.......2006-04-05

One of the more underated bands in electronica is Sylver, a Belgian trance/dance duo that turns out relentlessly pretty music. And their debut album "Chances" was a surprisingly polished debut, with lots of silky Europop electronica with some R&B and balladic flourishes.

It opens with "Turn the Tide," a shimmering trancey song that has enough of a beat to get you bouncing in your chair. It has some typical pop lyrics, but Silvy De Bie's pretty voice keeps them interesting. "I can't believe/I still receive/so much affection/from your side..." Add a couple more little "my love for you is dyin'" songs.

Then with "Forgiven," we get De Bie singing "I want to be forgiven/I want to hold you in my arms again." From there on, it's softer-edged love songs, some with pretty synth in songs like "In Your Eyes," but opting for a dancier sound in the shimmying "Edge of Life." There's even a horn-trance song.

Unfortunately, Sylver is currently the sort of band you might hear good things about, but pretty much never see in music stores. Yeah, it's synthy dancepop, which is usually cheesy and cold. But Sylver manages to add a dash of warmth and romantic longing to their music.

Wout Van Dessel does an excellent job with the trancey beats, and he crafts some catchy melodies that don't quite get repetitive. In some of the more electronic songs, they start to get repetitive, only to have Van Dessel throw in a twist or an ultrafast series of beats. And did I mention that I love the R&B-style horns in "Angel on My Shoulder"?

De Bie's voice also makes this above average. It has pretty typical pop lyrics, full of love betrayed, lost or gained, usually with the title words repeated many times ("In your eyes/I could drown and still survive/in your eyes/I could see how to live my life"), but De Bie's voice is sweet, bright and even angelic when she's getting really emotional.

Sylver's debut album has a few problems, but the energy and vibrance of "Chances" overwhelms that. A charming, fun trance album.

A bit short.......2004-02-04

I personally like their 2nd album (Little Things) more but this one was listenable. Forever in Love and Mystery of Tomorrow were my favorites. Angel on My Shoulder starts out different with a jazzy sounding instrument, In Your Eyes and Secrets are ballads while Edge of Life is an R&B tempoed song. Bonus Videos of the Hit singles Turn the Tide: The video has a guy in a hospital and his heart stops but they get it to beat again. At the end of the video she trips over the cord that was keeping him alive. Last, Forever in Love: A video filmed in warm weather where Silvy is riding a bike down the street near a beach and Wout van Dessel is walking down the side of the road. They are supposed to have a 3rd album out by summer 2004 so I give this album 3 stars.

For thoes of you who are club kids, then this is the perferect cd for you. It's great for parties, wedding receptions, even dances. So, if you're a clubber then this is deffinatly for you.

If I only new..........2003-11-15

I wasted my money. This album is sooooooooooo cheesy!!! Lead vocal is too high and base is far from being inventive or moving. If you want to listen to some quality lady vocal put on a quality techno base, try DJ Encore and Engelina (Intuition).

mesh of great basslines.......2003-09-15

If you take the vocal talents of engelina, jan johnston, sarah mclachlin, and dee dee, compress all that great talent...you get silvy. One of the most angelic voices known to dance club floors. It's almost impossible to skip tracks, due to the great basslines, and unique fill-ins. This cd is a must have for all music fans. You don't have to be a techno fan to love tracks like "TURN THE TIDE", "IN YOUR EYES", and "SECRETS". I have many friends who are fans of evanescence, and other commercial industrial/goth bands, and they love this mesh of hot rhythm beats, soulfoul brass back ups, and traditional trance vibes.
