Soundtracks are a mixed bag at best. Some are little more than an assortment of pieces, but others hang together effectively on their own, like this one. The idea of Chinese music--both popular and operatic--juxtaposed with the sounds of Nat King Cole performing Latin music might seem bizarre, but it works beautifully, sustaining a lush, romantic mood created both by the strings and the '40s Chinese music, itself a tinkling Hollywood pastiche. But as atmospheric as all this is, one track stands out above the others: "Blue," actually a version of the classic "St. James' Infirmary," takes on another dimension in Chinese hands. While familiar but completely alien at the same time, the slithering Asian sonorities mesh perfectly with the African-American form to create something evocative but with a sadness that goes beyond blues. The movie is of a time and place; the soundtrack is of a mood and yearning. Listen at night, with someone you love close by. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awsome Instrumental Music.......2007-03-09

The soundtrack is really good; I didn't like some of the songs (the Chinese ones) but there are only 3 in the whole CD. The instrumental music is awesome making the soundtrack an average good.

4 out of 5 stars The Bing Crosby songs are very good but...........2006-07-17

In my opinion it`s the Bing Crosby-songs that makes this album worth buying, but these songs can be bought on compilations. The rest of the music is for people with special interest for backgroundmusic in films.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! Hauntingly beautiful..........2006-05-09

So beautiful and emotional, it makes you want to cry! The score for the film and the collection of music together is absolutely breathtaking....

5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack for a lover of WKW films.......2006-03-22

I loved the film, so I love the soundtrack, which brings back memories of the film. WKW uses period music to evoke the emotions and feel of the time period of the film.

5 out of 5 stars as gorgeous as the film!.......2006-02-11

Film soundtracks are often disappointing---there are songs from the movie that are not on the CD, songs on the CD that were not in the film, different versions of songs on the CD than in the film, etc.

Happily, this soundtrack is absolutely faithful to the film, and it is masterfully interwoven with dialogue excerpts from the film which complement and build on the music instead of being obtrusive. I don't understand a word of Chinese but still enjoyed listening to the actors' voices, and also liked the bits of traditional Chinese music as well. There are some tracks that I don't remember from the film but they are not throw-away filler in any way, just beautiful extras in the same vein.

3 out of 5 stars Good , club-stomp Laibach.......2007-04-27

Laibach has always produced varied work (from stomping dance tunes to overblown soundtrack melodrama), but this album is definitely for the fans who prefer the EBM-style Laibach. It's a solid album with not much filler.
My one complaint: there are some very good tracks on here that feature very silly choruses of female singers. As soon as the chorus comes in, it sounds like Laibach is just making a joke of the song. What were they thinking?

5 out of 5 stars Best EBM cd of that year, AT LEAST........2005-11-28

[...]
The comparisons to stuff like Nitzer's 'That Total Age' I can see, except this is a much more interesting, stronger album. TTA wears thin after repeated run-throughs, it really shows its age. WAT manages to be both minimalistic yet modern, stripped down, but evolving. This is Laibach's strongest cd since Kapital, and a cd that buries the type of crap currently masquerading as electronic body music. Laibach has been marching to its own drum for decades now, since the guys in Rammstein were in summer camp. WAT is no different, except now Laibach is schooling all their contemporaries in the "scene" in obvious piss-takes...'Tanz mit Laibach' comes to mind. This cd is %90 golden good times, you'll either love it or hate it.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another in a Phenomenal Series of Glorious Musical Triumphs by Laibach.......2005-08-16

This is one of the very finest albums I have ever been privileged enough to hear, let alone Laibach's single best effort to date (I've been a fan since 1989, when an eccentric skinhead with a genius-level IQ and a nearly 4.0 GPA, attending a party I went to during college, insisted on playing "MacBeth," and I approached him in order to find out who we were listening to, for some context on that remark i.e., I'm not a recent fan who just loves their newest album).

The positively glorious first track, "B Mashina," which is worth the price of the album alone, is in constant conflict with "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" (the quintessential bluegrass instrumental) for the position of my favorite popular music piece of the post-Second World War era. There is a truly excellent tune (I'm unsure of the title or track number; it appears near the middle of the album, in any event) in which Laibach vigorously and courageously ignores contemporary tabus in order to savagely dissect the suicidal insanity which calls itself "multiculturalism," with particular emphasis on the present trend towards mass immigration from the Islamic Middle East into Europa. Its the kind of song that could get them banned in a country like Canada, and I salute them for releasing it anyway.

I don't think there's a track on this album I don't derive a disproportionate level of enjoyment from. It is truly a magnificent, brave, and unique piece of auditory art. Purchase it now!

4 out of 5 stars fails to do anything innovative, just like I'd hoped .......2005-01-25

WAT arrived in my music collection over a year ago and has enjoyed more or less constant CD changer time ever since.

Picture a dancier Opus Dei, or perhaps a more ominous Let it Be, and you'll have some idea what's going on here. It's as if the whole alpine aesthetic that was discarded for Kapital, NATO, and Jesus Christ Superstars (their creative nadir, I think most fans would agree, and an obvious attempt to cash in on the whole mid-90's industrial metal thing, the ONLY time they've ever done anything involving trends other than setting them)has returned, mutated to incorporate the techno aesthetic of their mid-period stuff, as well as the omnipresent foreshadowing of doom of their most recent work. Not that I don't agree with their assessment.

B-Maschina is the only cover, and since I don't know the original and doubt anyone else will either, it barely counts as such, and is, like every other cover they've ever done, distinctly Laibach. It's easily my favorite song on the album. Just try to get the chorus out of your head.

The rest of the album is also excellent. Tanz Mit Laibach is an obvious appeal to the goth/industrial DJs of the world (with its DAF-pastiche stomp), as is much of the album. Overall, it's not quite as good as some of the classic material from the late 80's, but compare it to the recent work of the roughly contemporary Front Line Assembly, and its easy to see who still has some artistic integrity. WAT stacks up nicely against anything in its genre being done today, including the utterly brilliant new offerings from fellow industrial dinos Skinny Puppy, Front 242, and Klinik. This really is a great time to be an electronic music fan; even Kraftwerk have had a reasonably credible new offering.

If you are a fan, you already own this, if not, you can feel comfortable about purchasing it if you're curious about the band and want to know what they're about. It's a great bridge to the somewhat more inscrutable (but ultimately more rewarding) early to mid period stuff like Opus Dei and Let it Be, and almost accessible enough to be given to Rammstein fans...

2 out of 5 stars Since when..........2004-03-30

...did Laibach feel that they had to resort to ripping off Rammstein or Nitzer Ebb circa "That Total Age"?? Truth be told, groups like Rammstein ripped off Laibach. But what happened here??

Ok, so the cold-war may have long since ended, the wall came down and the impact of lp's (yes, lp's) like "Laibach," "Rekapitualacija," "Occupied Europe Tour," "Nova Akropola," or "Ljubljana-Sagreb-Beograd" has subsided. But still, I am old enough to remember wondering, "what the h*ll happened" when "Let it Be" was first issued. So, if you understand that, perhaps you can understand my opinion of this cd (even though I realize I'm probably in the minority).

Anyway, yes, this cd is very uncharacteristically Laibach. To some newcomers, perhaps that's a welcomed thing. But I long for the days of Laibach as it was...as I watched and listened wide-eyed in my BUNDESWHER fatigues memorizing drills of the LUFTWAFFER and Fallschirmjager.

Get this for what its worth should you feel so inclined. Otherwise, save your dough and go get anything Laibach released in the mid to late 80's, anything by COIL, anything (old) by SPK, or, should you feel like dancing to your so-called "industrial," anything by DAF. Oh, and, shame on me, let's not forget anything by Einsturzende Neubauten (yes, even their newer stuff...forgive me, but they're still EN).

Enjoy kiddies. Erstellt euch!

5 out of 5 stars Nemeth is Big Time!.......2007-01-04

John is big time, BIG TIME. Come and Get Its song list is a well picked mix of standard and Nemeth's own tunes.

With Junior Watson at his side, John's powerful voice and harp playing, swing, bop, and jump work to make this disc great fun. He has a classic old style sound and although Mr Nemeth is still a young man his years on stage in bars in Idaho and Califronia have helped hone is talent. If you are a fan of the blues, you will not go wrong buying this disc.
