Product Description
Why Unclassics? That's easy: they ain’t the usual disco suspects! Morgan Geist, one half of the acclaimed production duo Metro Area and owner of the innovative Environ label, has lovingly assembled this debut DJ mix featuring a selection of his favorite obscure electronic funk and disco tracks from 1978-1985. Unclassics will thrill dusty-fingered disco connoisseurs, hip lifestylers and electro neophytes alike. It’s a perfectly-mixed fix of rare Italodisco (Alexander Robotnick-produced "Go On Do It" by Victor or Plastic Mode’s "Baja Imperial"), hot European boogie (Geist’s own remix of Dance Reaction’s "Disco Train"), and even Soviet cosmic funk (Zoviet’s "Pacific") blended together seamlessly and incorporating Geist’s studio mastery. Such spaced-out rarities (most available for the first time on CD) have turned heads and opened minds when played in sets from innovative DJs like Metro Area, disco don Daniel Wang, cult hero DJ Harvey and DJ I-F.

Despite the newest of these tracks approaching 20 years old, the playful experimentation and raw grooves sound fresher than most of the music being played in clubs today. This collection is guaranteed to stay ahead of the DJ mix CD curve with its innovative selection, painstaking remastering and eye-catching design by Julian Morey (Factory Records, The Haçienda, VOGUE).

its one of the best unknown secrets.

5 out of 5 stars Morgan Geist Is the Man.......2007-02-15

This is an outstanding compilation, featuring 24 bit remasters, lovingly mixed by Morgan Geist. The tracks are mostly weird, electronic disco and italo, with a touch of what I guess would have to be called hip hop. Geist has discussed how there is a disco canon, consisting of all the big disco-era hits, and then there's an "underground canon" of sorts, but no one anywhere plays or references these songs (at least, not until more recently). His motivation, then, was just to shed some light on these forgotten tracks where, according to him, "there's something wrong with each of them." And that's true to an extent, as they are all a bit off kilter, but they're all great nonetheless, and they're generally quite melodic and memorable too. A great dance mix. Seek out I-F's Mixed Up In the Hague too (which isn't currently available in the US, but is in Europe).

5 out of 5 stars A must for fans of 80s Electro-Funk/Disco and Metro Area.......2005-01-29

As half of Metro Area, Morgan Geist delivered one of my favourite albums of all time, Metro Area's self-titled 2002 album.

Here he serves up a slice of "obscure" 80s tracks, ranging from Electro-Funk, Disco, Italo and sprinklings of 80s Hip-Hop/Rap (Victor's 'Go On Do It').

As a fan of this kind of music (Italo/80s Disco) having Morgan Geist mix up a slice of it is heaven - This is must have compilation for any Metro Area fans, you'll really see where their style of minimalistic 'Electronic Disco-House' comes from, some of the tracks here could have sat happily on their album and very few people would have been none-the-wiser (Purple Flash's 'We Can Make It' springs to mind).

In short, this is a must have, get it now and love it forever - And for anyone who doesn't have Metro Area's album, get that too, it's the perfect companion to this!
